1. First steps

Besides the preparations, well known from the README-file that popped up after extracting the DarkOne package, there are some other steps to do to complete the appearance of DarkOne.

1.1 Disabling frame styles

It may happen that some of the integrated panels doesn't “remembers” to start with disabled frame styles.

If this happens to you too, please set their frame styles to None as followed:

Album list panel

MENU → File → Preferences → Media Library → Album list panel → Advanced tab → Window frame style

Filter

MENU → File → Preferences → Columns UI → Filter tab → Edge style

Item Details Panel

1.) Right-click on the Trackinfo-Panel (centre on the left) → Options → Panel edge style

2.) Right-click on the buttons on the lower right side → Splitter Settings → PanelList tab → select DET → hit Configure button → Panel edge style

Item Properties

Right-click on the buttons on the lower right side → Splitter Settings → PanelList tab→ select INF → hit Configure button → Panel edge style

NG Playlist

Preferences → Columns UI → Playlist view → General tab→ Playlist edge style

1.2 Background picture

An image can be displayed in the background of the default Playlist view (ELPlaylist and also the MiniPlaylist, see chapters 2.8 and 2.10).

By default DarkOne v2.1 is set up to display an image that is called artist.* (* means: “Wildcard”, not necessary to specify the file extension) and is present in the musics folder.

If you want to change the path you have to do this manually.

Please click once with the right mouse button on one of these three buttons rightmost above the Playlist view:

Select Splitter Settings → Script → PerTrack and change the blue framed Script part illustrated below to your desired Path and Naming format:

Title Formatting skills may be necessary. Wildcards for file extensions or file names, e. g. artist*.* instead of artist_01.jpg, are possible.

1.3 Image for the Quck Search Toolbar

Unfortunately the new Quick Search Toolbar v1.0+ doesn't recognizes relative paths. So it is necessary to tell the Quick Search Toolbar the path to the “Search symbol” manually.

Please click once on the current search symbol of the black search bar (left besides the volume wheel) and select Options → enable Custom bitmap. Change to the folder ...foobar2000\DarkOne21\Images and select the file QS.bmp.

2. Usage

2.1 Control buttons

These buttons should be self-explanatory.

It may be mentioned that the buttons position will be rearranged depending on your display resolution (upper illustration shows the view on displays smaller than 1280*x, in the middle smaller than 1600*x and at the bottom higher than 1600*x) and that there will appear an additional button on resolutions higher than 1600*x.

The LAST.FM button as seen on the screenshot only appears if the optional Plugin foo_lastfm_radio.dll is present in your foobar2000\components folder.

Otherwise there's a CLEAR LIST button on resolutions smaller than 1600*x and an ADD LOC. button (to add an URL to the Playlist) on higher resolutions.

2.2 Rating-Panel

According to the chosen mode the stars in the rating panel will display Ratings (white), Playcounts (green) or an automatic rating (blue) generated by informations from the now playing track.

The needed function is selectable through a context menu by right-clicking the stars:

The illustration on the left shows the context menu that is exclusively available during playback of a file that is present in the Media Library, because the options only take effect on these files.

In STOP-state the “normal” context menu of the panel (Properties and Configure only) is displayed instead.

For tracks outside the Media Library there is only a basic menu available during playback, that allows the user to delete existing manual ratings (Delete rating) and allows access to the panels Properties and its script (Configure).

4

Page 5: UserGuide v2.1

2.2.1 Functions of the Rating PanelDelete ratingDeletes existing rating informations (only active if rating information is present in the file).

Show/enable ratingDisplays rating informations in white stars and enables the functionality to rate the now playing song by clicking on the desired amount of stars.By moving the mouse over the stars the Tooltip shows in ascending order the following hints:“Bad", “Average", “Good", “Very Good" and “Excellent".

Show auto-ratingDisplays the automatic rating in blue stars. This rating generates itself by the amount of play counts and the days a file has been left in the media library since it was first played. It doesn't change the files or their database entries itself, but is only and exclusively generated by DarkOne for this rating display. The exact formula is (comparable): (Play counts/2) – (Days in media library/(365/5))That means that a file needs at least 2 play counts to get one star. However, a song looses 5 stars per year - or exactly 1 star per 73 days - presence in the media library.By moving the mouse over the stars the Tooltip shows the generated value with one decimal place. The manual rating functionality is disabled in this mode.

Show playcountsDisplays the play counts of the now playing track in green stars.By moving the mouse over the stars the Tooltip shows the play counts as numeric value. The manual rating functionality is disabled in this mode.

Rate to the databaseIf Show/enable rating is selected, ratings will be stored to the database. You may recognise the enabled database rating mode on the yellow “mousehover” stars.

Rate to the file tagsIf Show/enable rating is selected, ratings will be stored to the file tags. You may recognise the enabled tag rating mode on the white outlined “mousehover” stars.

Playcount limitIf Show playcounts is selected, you can set up the amount of play counts a song has to be left before displaying all stars.

PropertiesCalls the Properties-Window of the panel. If you – for whatever reason I can't imagine... - don't want to use the context menu, you can change the Display Mode (0 for Show/enable rating, 1 for Show auto-rating or 2 for Show playcounts), the Rating Mode (0 for Rate to database or 1 for Rate to file tags) and the Playcounter limit (as number from 0-x) here.In addition you can change the background colour independently from the global colour scheme. Read more about this in chapter 3.

ConfigureShows the script of the panel. It is strongly dis-recommended to change anything in this script without any knowledge about the script language!

Note:To avoid a confusing mixed-rating-display the rating panel is set up to prefer tag rating if the file is double rated in the database AND the tags with different values!Under this circumstances it may happen that database rating will be ignored!

2.3 Trackinfo Panel

The area where informations about the now playing track are displayed is a Columns UI Item details panel.

You can change the informations that are displayed in the panel with Options, available with right-clicking on it (Title Formatting skills are necessary for this purpose).

You can also change the behaviour of the panel with a right mouse button click. By default it is set up to display informations about the now playing track.

But in Displayed track you can also choose to display information of a selected track or select an automatic mode instead.

2.4 Display

The progress bar is also a seekbar in which you can drag with the left mouse button or the mouse wheel to every point in the playing file.

The “seek time” will be displayed in the display below.

Since there is no seeking possible in Streams the seekbar function is deactivated by listening to them.

There are further informations displayed in the display – as long as they are available. LOSSY/LOSSLESS – shows if the playing file is encoded lossy or lossless. AUDIO MD5 – lights up when the playing file has a MD5 checksum. REPLAYGAIN – light up when the playing file has Replaygain info.

The Elapsed-/Remain-Time and Bitrate will be replaced by the volume value on volume changes for about three seconds.

There's a Peakmeter below the information unit, which appearance can be fit to your needs.

To do so right-click on it and choose Preferences.

To change its appearance may be necessary when you change the global colour scheme of DarkOne (see chapter 3) since the Peakmeters background colour doesn't adopts the settings made in Columns UI automatically.

The according settings are db Range (in the upper left corner of the Preferences window) and the Colors button (downright of the window).

If you have changed its settings and you're not satisfied with the result you can go back to configurations default setting by choosing the PEAKdefault.pmf from the DarkOne21\Others\Settings folder with the Import Settings option in its context menu.

Page 7: UserGuide v2.1

2.5 Cover Panel

2.5.1 “Album Art” (foobar2000 Artreader)If available through the foobar2000 artreader album arts from the now playing file will be displayed in the Cover Panel on the down left side of the configuration.

If there's no image available through the foobar2000 artreader a DarkOne default “NoCover” image will be displayed instead.

Album art embedded to the file tags will be recognized automatically by the foobar2000 artreader.

To display external artwork too you have to add/change paths and naming schemes, when yours are different than preconfigured.

Please click on the MENU button (on the left above the Playlist views) and choose File → Preferences → Display.

Here is the place to add your naming schemes and/or paths for up to four images (Front cover, Back cover, Artist (for an artist picture) and Disc) you may want to display in the cover panel and – at least the Front cover and the Artist – in the Playlist views.

Title-Formatting and Wildcards are possible.

In addition you can set up paths to Stub images for each tab to display when there's no match in the Search pattern and you're not satisfied with the default DarkOne stub images. These stub images will be displayed in the Playlist views too (see chapters 2.8 – 2.10).

At least it is recommended to set up a stub image for the Front cover when you have activated album art display in NG Playlist (see chapter 2.9) since this Playlist view can't be preconfigured to use the DarkOne default images.

If you want to use the DarkOne default NoCover-Image, that is already used by the configuration except by the NG Playlist, you'll find it in the ...\foobar2000\DarkOne21\Images folder.

7

Page 8: UserGuide v2.1

2.5.2 “Custom Pictures”In addition to the images provided by the foobar2000 artreader you can also display custom images in the cover Panel.

Please click with the right mouse button on the cover Panel and choose Properties.

Double-click on one of the lines in the blue framed area as illustrated on the left and type in your path and naming scheme of the desired picture. Wildcards, relative paths and Title-Formatting are possible. So you can display up to five different custom images in the cover Panel.

If there is more than one image that fits this pattern you can force a priori-

ty for preferred file extensions as illustrated in the red framed box.

Like preconfigured you need to separate the file extensions with a |.

Click OK to apply your action.

2.5.3 Mouse actions

Only active during playback!

Left mouse buttonSwitches only between existing images in Album Art or Custom Pictures mode. If you have set up Stub images in the foobar2000 artreader they will be switched too!

WARNING:Don't change Script parts without Jscript Skills!

2.6 Spectral Analyzer

In the middle of the configuration is a visualisation called Channel Spectrum Panel.

This panel is preconfigured to its maximum capacity and may increase CPU consumption!

To fit the channel spectrum to your needs, right-click on it and choose Configure.

If you have changed its settings and you're not satisfied with the result you can go back to configurations default setting by choosing the CSPdefault.csp from the DarkOne21\Others\Settings folder with the Import button.

Page 10: UserGuide v2.1

2.7 Buttonbar above the playlist

There's a thin bar with additional buttons above the Playlist views, that allows fast and easy access to their functions.

The MENU button opens the foobar2000 Menu.

The Music note jumps to the file that is now playing, useful for instance if you were busy in another Playlist and want to return to the now playing file immediately.

Right besides it there is the Stop-after-current button that stops playback after the now playing file.

Right besides the Stop-After-Current button is the button to change the Playback Order. When clicking on it a menu opens, that allows you to choose the desired playback order as followed: Default – plays files in the order they are in the Playlist

Repeat (playlist) – repeats the active Playlist

Repeat (track) – repeats the now playing file

Random – chooses tracks randomly from the active Playlist, where tracks may be played more than once

Shuffle (tracks) – chooses tracks randomly from the active Playlist, where tracks are only played once

Shuffle (albums) – chooses albums randomly from the active Playlist

Shuffle (folders) – chooses folder content randomly from the active Playlist

To indicate the chosen playback order the button image changes itself according to your choice.

The three buttons on the right are switching between the different Playlist views. The button on the left activates the default Playlist view (ELPlaylist, see chapter 2.8).The middle button activates the NG Playlist (see chapter 2.9).The button the right activates the MiniPlaylist view (see chapter 2.10) on the left down side of the configuration. The Cover panel “moves” to the usual place of the Playlist instead and turns to the Big Cover View.

10

Page 11: UserGuide v2.1

2.8 Default Playlist view (ELPlaylist)

The ELPlaylist is the default Playlist view of the configuration.

I've tried to make the usage and end-users modification of the ELPlaylist as easy as possible, but Title-Formatting skills are still necessary!

2.8.1 Grouping and sorting

The Playlist view is set up to group by Artist, Album and – if there is more than one disc and the files are correctly tagged – disc number by default. If none of the above tags is present in the files, they are grouped by the name of the folder they are stored in.

The sorting in the Playlist complies with the order the files are stored in their folders. That for it is recommended that the file names are beginning with their track numbers.

If you want to change these default settings please right-click in the Playlist and choose Settings → Grouping tab.

In the red framed text box in the illustration above please type-in your desired grouping scheme.

In the blue framed text box in the illustration above please type-in your desired sorting scheme.

There is the possibility to set up additional sorting schemes in the ELPlaylist. You'll find this possibility under Settings → Misc tab → Additional sort format for context menu.

Please give your new sorting scheme an expressive name under Display name and type-in your desired sorting string in Sort format.

Click add after doing it and your new sorting scheme is added to the list.

To access this sorting scheme from your Playlist view you have to enhance your context menu with the entry Sort. To do it, please go to the Behaviour tab.

At the bottom of this tab you'll find the entry Context menu. Choose Sort from the drop-down menu and enable Show.

After hit OK your changes are stored and you can use them.

11

Page 12: UserGuide v2.1

2.8.2 Transparency for the Popup-WindowIf you move the mouse over a track/album in the default Playlist view, a popup-window with informations about the Playlist entry the mouse points to will open.

You can display an image besides this informations (see the following chapter 2.8.3 Field definition).

Since transparency of the popup-window depends on your Windows Visual Style it may be necessary to tell the popup-window the “transparency colour”.

Otherwise it may happen that the popup-window will get an ugly white border that doesn't fits to the appearance of the configuration.

To tell the popup-window the correct transparency colour, right-click in the Playlist view and choose Settings → Misc tab.

Click on the colour... button and choose the transparent colour (as seen in the illustration on the left).

Confirm your action with OK to return to the Misc tab.

You can change the degree of transparency of the popup-window with Popup opacity.

The default value is 224.

The lower the value the higher the transparency effect.

After hit OK your changes are applied to your Playlist view.

Note:You must do these changes for the Mini-Playlist (the right button above the playlist) separately, because it has a popup-window too.

12

Page 13: UserGuide v2.1

2.8.3 Field definitionTo fit the ELPlaylists behaviour to your needs please right-click in it and choose Settings → Field definition tab.

To change an entry double-click on it and overwrite the content of the Definition text box with your desired string/value.

2.8.3.1 Global Settings

2.8.3.3 Rating-Display

RATE.DISPLAYHere you can decide what to display in the rating area of the playlist, where following entries can be done in the Definition text box:0 = display ratings (white)1 = display an automatic rating (blue) (see chapter 2.2.1 for details).2 = displays play counts (green)

By default the rating area will display the rating („0“).

RATE.BAR.MODEHere you can choose if the rating area should be displayed as stars or a bar, where following entries can be done in the Definition text box:0 = Stars1 = Bar

By default the rating area will be displayed as stars („0“).

PLAYCOUNT.LIMITIndependent from the rating panel you can set up the amount of play counts a song has to be left before displaying all stars/the whole bar.

Please enter a positive value for Definition!

By default all stars/the whole bar will be displayed when 50 play counts are reached.

Note:If you enter a wrong value in one of the three options above the default behaviour will be executed!

15

2.9 NG Playlist

The NG Playlist is the second Playlist view in the DarkOne configuration (the middle of the three buttons rightmost above the Playlist views).

2.9.1 Album art

It is possible to display album art in this Playlist view too.

If you want it, please hit the MENU button on the left hand above the Playlist views and navigate to File → Preferences → Columns UI → Playlist view → General tab.

At the bottom in the Artwork (NG Playlist only) area please activate Display artwork in groups.

To choose which images have to be displayed navigate to Columns UI → Artwork tab.

If you want to use the foobar2000 artreader for displaying album art in the NG playlist enable Embedded and external artwork below Built-in foobar2000 artwork reader mode.

To display an alternative image when no album art can be found via foobar2000 artreader, please navigate to MENU → File → Preferences → Display and set a path to a stub image for the Front cover (see also chapter 2.5).

It may be necessary to restart foobar2000 to take effect.

2.9.2 Grouping

To synchronize the grouping in NG Playlist and the ELPlaylists (Main Playlist view and MiniPlaylist) you'll find a NG Playlist Grouping.txt in the folder ...\foobar2000\DarkOne21\Others\Settings that contains a suitable Title-Formatting string.

Please copy this script preset to MENU → File → Preferences → Columns UI → Playlist view → Grouping tab by double-clicking on the existing preset and overwriting it with the copied content.

2.9.3 RatingSame as ELPlaylist and the rating Panel you can change the behaviour of the rating display in the NG Playlist.

Please navigate to MENU → File → Preferences → Columns UI → Playlist view → Columns tab and choose the columns Rating.

Now choose the Scripts → Display tab.

Rating ModeTo switch the mode go to $puts(rating.mode,0) and change the 0 (Rating) to 1 (displaying the calculated Auto-Rating as described in chapter 2.2) or 2 (displaying the Playcounts).

Playcounter-LimitTo set up the amount of play counts a song has to be left before displaying all stars in rating mode 2 go to $puts(count.limit,50) and change the 50 to the desired amount of play counts.

Please read the Columns UI Documentation for more details on how to the options of the NG Playlist.

16

Page 17: UserGuide v2.1

2.10 MiniPlaylist/Big Cover View

With the third button rightmost above the Playlist views the default Playlist view moves to the place of the cover Panel and the cover Panel moves to the place of the default Playlist view.

The default Playlist view will become a “MiniPlaylist” with limited functionality. It can be adjusted similar to the default Playlist view, since both are made with ELPlaylist. Only difference is the limitation of the options.

To its configuration please see chapters 2.8.1 to 2.8.3.2.

2.11 Volume-Wheel and additional buttons

The CONSOLE button opens the foobar2000 console, that offers valuable informations when ripping CD's or about occurred errors.

STATUSPANE and STATUSBAR opens/closes the associated bar.

With the volume wheel you can adjust the volume with the mouse wheel or the left mouse button.Volume changes are displayed with a lightened position indicator for about three seconds and as value in the display on the left side of the configuration.

You can select Volume Mute with right-click on the volume wheel. The position indicator will turn to red as long as the volume is muted.

For the functions of the Quick Search Toolbar please read their documentation.

2.12 Multipanel-Switcher

You can switch between preconfigured panels with the buttons on the right down side of the configuration.

2.12.1 Preconfigured Panels

2.12.1.1 PL – Playlist switcher (Columns UI)

With the PL button you'll show the Playlist switcher (Columns UI).

Its configuration can be done in MENU → File → Preferences → Columns UI → Playlist switcher. Its appearance can be changed in the Scriptbox by using Title-Formatting.

Please read more in its Documentation and its special Title-Formatting-Reference.

17

Page 18: UserGuide v2.1

2.12.1.2 AL – Album List Panel (Tree structure)

The AL button shows the Album List Panel that displays the content of the Media Library in an explorer-like user-defined or preconfigured tree-structure.

Its configuration can be done in MENU → File → Preferences → Media Library → Album List Panel. You'll need Title-Formatting skills to define new views.

2.12.1.3 FIL – Filters (Columns UI)

The FIL button shows the Columns UI Filters that “filters” the content of the Media Library after predefined criteria. Its configuration can be done in MENU → File → Preferences → Columns UI → Filter tab.

Read more about it in its Online-Documentation (still under construction, though...)

2.12.1.4 LYR – Lyrics Display

The LYR button shows the Lyrics Panel to display lyrics in Tags or external files (*.txt, *.lrc).

Synced lyrics (*.lrc) will be displayed without the time-stamps but won't be synchronized with them!

Note:

The Lyrics Show Panel used in previous DarkOne versions is now replaced with a WSH Panel mod with limited functionality. This strategy was necessary because the Lyrics Show Panel as well as its successor Lyrics Show Panel 2 is very unstable and caused foobar2000 to crash/freeze on many systems.

Since I don't want to bother the users of DarkOne v2.1 with heavy crashware I had no other choice, sorry...

If there's a stable Lyrics Display available in the near future I will replace the WSH Panel mod Lyrics Panel with it.

Mouse actions(only active during playback)

Left mouse buttonTo drag lyrics that are longer than the Panel height manually

Middle mouse buttonTo refresh the Panel display.

Right mouse buttonTo activate the context menu with the following entries: Refresh – same as left mouse button Auto-scroll – to scroll lyrics automatically over the panel height according to the playing files length Fading (only active with enabled Auto-scoll option) – turns on a fading effect Properties – opens the Panels Properties window to get optional settings Configure – opens the Panels script

Don't change Script parts without Jscript Skills!

Loading external lyrics filesTo load external lyrics files you have to tell the panel where to find them. Right-click on the panel and choose Properties.

Double-click on the entry Lyrics Path and type-in your path and naming scheme. Title-Formatting and Wildcards are allowed.

18

Page 19: UserGuide v2.1

It is possible to load lyrics from the internet with additional, optional components. Since these components are in alpha-state or also instable as the Lyrics Show Panel they're not included in DarkOne v2.1.

But the lyrics panel is preconfigured for working together with foo_lyricsgrabber and/or foo_lyricsdb that are both will store the found lyrics to the file tags.

Should one of these two components already exists in your foobar2000 components directory there will be automatically an additional entry called Lyrics Search Command in the panels Properties window with a suggestion for a suitable download command. Should both exist in your components folder the Lyricsgrabber will have priority over foo_lyricsdb.

You'll also have the additional command Online Search in the context menu.

If you download one of these two components after installing DarkOne v2.1 it may be necessary to go to the Properties window and hit Clear to make the panel recognizing the new component. But this will force you to enter your path and naming scheme to external lyrics files again.

PaddingThere are two further options available in the Properties window to add padding between the panel boarder and the lyrics. Change the values if needed with a double mouse click on the according entry.

Font StyleBy default the Lyrics Panel uses Common (list items) Font Style that is chosen by Columns UI Colours and Fonts Settings. You can change it to fit your needs if wanted.

Go to the Panel Properties and double-click on the entry UI Font: Override.

Now double-click on the entry UI Font: Style and change the Font Style as followed:Font, Size, Style, for instance: Segoe UI, 11, 1

Please note that the Font size has to be set in Pixels not Points! 4 Pixels corresponds to 3 Points. So Segoe UI 8pt are approx. 11 Pixel.

There are following options available for the Style:0 – regular1 – bold2 – italic3 – bolditalic4 – underline8 – strikeout

2.12.1.5 BIO – Biography View Panel

The BIO button shows the Biography View Panel that displays informations and images for the selected or now playing file.

These informations are loaded from last.fm . You can select your local last.fm server in MENU → File → Preferences → Tools → Biography Server → Last.fm → General tab.

The Panel offers extensive Properties and Settings, for instance if and where to download biographies and images on your local harddisc.

Unfortunately there is no reasonable English documentation for this component developed by a Japanese, so I advice you to play with its options ;).

19

Page 20: UserGuide v2.1

2.12.1.6 DET – Item Details Panel (Columns UI)

The DET button shows an Item Details Panel (Columns UI) which is preconfigured to display Performer and Comment Tags of the now playing file.

Since the home splitter (Panel Stack Splitter) hides the default context menu of the Item Details Panel you need to right-click in the panel → Splitter Settings → select DET in PanelList → disable Forced Layout → OK if you want to change its default configuration. Now you have access to the Item Details Panels default context menu.

To get the now hidden buttons back, right-click again in the panel → Splitter Settings → select DET in PanelList → enable Forced Layout → OK.

2.12.1.7 INF – Item Properties (Columns UI)

The INF button shows an Item Properties panel which contains editable metadata informations about the now playing or selected file as well as technical informations about it.

The reach its context menu you have to do it as similar as with the Item Details Panel (DET button) above. But you need to do this for INF instead ;).

Change the name of your covers to folder.*, cover.* or front.*

Add a new suitable naming scheme to Preferences → Display

The ELPlaylists Popup window doesn't shows the correct image!

You have chosen a wrong option (front, back, disc, icon, artist) for the foobar2000 artreader.

Change the POPUP.ART in the ELPlaylists field definitions as described in chapter 2.8.3.1

The auto-cycling doesn't work when “Faded Transition” is chosen!

You are using Windows XP/Vista and/or a Graphics card that isn't fully compatible with the panels “Faded Transition” functionality.
