    Item practice

    Equipment check

    When you access any speaking or listening items for the first time, a screen for equipment check will appear. For speaking items, you will see a microphone check screen. For listening items, you will see a headset check screen.

    Follow the instructions on screen to check your microphone and headset.

    How to do the item practice

    Follow these steps to do the item practice:

    1 To start the item practice, click on on the main menu.

    Then choose a practice set and click on the practice set button, for example, .

    2 To respond to the practice items, follow the instructions on screen. When you have completed your response to an item, click on to go to the next item. Your response will be saved automatically for future review.

    If you want to review and change any of the items you have completed or missed, click on to go to the previous item.

    You can also use the shortcut key to move through the screens by pressing Ctrl and the letter N or P on your keyboard at the same time.

    3 For listening and speaking items, you will be given a short time to prepare. The length of time is indicated in the audio status box and/or the recording status box.

    For the item types listed below, the audio recording will play automatically after the countdown time.

    Speaking items: Repeat sentence, Re-tell lecture and Answer short question Listening items: Summarize spoken text, Multiple-choice, choose multiple answers, Fill in

    the blanks, Highlight correct summary, Multiple-choice, choose single answer, Select missing word, Highlight incorrect words and Write from dictation

    To adjust the volume of the recording, move the slider left to decrease and right to increase. You can adjust the volume at any time while the recording is playing.

    For the item types listed below, the microphone will open after the countdown time. When the microphone opens, you should start speaking and give your response.

    Speaking items: Read aloud, Repeat sentence, Describe image, Re-tell lecture and Answer short question

    If you do not give your response and go to another item after the microphone opens, you cannot go back to record your response at a later time. You will have to exit and restart the practice.

    4 To submit your responses, click on on the last item in each practice set. If you have not completed all the items, a question box will appear on screen, reminding you of the items that you have not completed, and asking Do you want to continue the practice or access the Answer key for the set?

    Click on Continue to go to the first item that you did not complete.

    Click on Access the Answer key to go to the Answer key for the practice set.

    5 If you want to exit the practice before completing the set, click on or the icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. The program will save your responses to the items that you have completed, and you will return to the Item practice menu. You can then choose to do another practice set or resume the practice at a later time.

    6 To resume the item practice, click on the practice set button that you want to continue. A question box will appear on screen, Do you want to restart or continue this set?

    Click on Restart to go to the fi rst item in the practice set. Your responses from your last attempt will be deleted.

    Click on Continue to go to the fi rst item that you did not complete. Your responses from your last attempt will be saved.

    7 To exit and close the program, click on on the main menu or the icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. A question box will appear on screen, Do you really want to quit?

    Click on YES to close the program.

    Click on NO to continue using the program.

    Timer

    Only three item types are individually timed:

    Writing items: Summarize written text (10 minutes) and Write essay (20 minutes) Listening items: Summarize spoken text (10 minutes)

    A countdown timer in the lower right-hand corner of the screen will show the time for each of the item types.

    You can continue working on the item if you have not completed your response after the countdown time is over. This will help you assess your performance under timed conditions.

    Answer key

    The Answer key is available once you have submitted your responses to the items in a practice set. You can also access the Answer key from the main menu.

    To access the Answer key for a practice set, click on the practice set button, for example, .

    You will be able to view all items in the practice set in the same order. There are one or two sets of buttons at the bottom of each item screen, depending on the item type.

    Prompt

    Prompt buttons allow you to access the audio recording of an item and its transcript.

    Audio recordingTo play the audio recording of an item, click on .

    To stop the recording, click on the button again.

    TranscriptTo read the transcript of an audio recording, click on .

    Response

    Response buttons allow you to access your own response to an item, the sample response and its transcript, and explanations where available.

    Your responseTo access your own response to an item, click on .

    If it is a written response, a text box will appear. If it is a spoken response, an audio recording will start playing. To stop the recording, click on the button again.

    Explanation To read the explanation about why each response option is correct or incorrect, or why the sample essay is a good response, click on .

    User interface tips

    The following features are included to help you navigate through the screens on the CD-ROM.

    To go to the home page, click on the icon. To minimize the window, click on the icon. To close the window, click on the icon. All text windows in the Answer key are movable.

    You can open several text boxes at the same time and move them around to compare different texts. For example, you can compare your own response with the transcripts of the audio recording of an item and the sample response to the item. You can also read the transcript of an audio recording while listening to the recording.

    Response boxes become scrollable whenever the length of the displayed text is larger than the size of the response box. Hold the left botton of the mouse down on the scroll bar button and slide it up and down the scroll bar to browse through the text.
