2. My Country

  • The world is mostly made up of water and seven large land areas known as continents.My country is called the United States of America. It is located on the continent of North America.

3. My Nation: North America

  • North America is made up of countries. One of these is the United States. Above the United States is a country called Canada. Below the United States is a country called Mexico.

4. One Nation: The 50 States

  • The United States is made up of 50 states. Most of the states border each other. There are two states that do not touch the rest of the states. These are Alaska and Hawaii.

5. Our Capital: Washington, D.C.

  • The capital of the United States is Washington, D.C. It is named after George Washington, who was the first President of the United States, and Christopher Columbus, a famous explorer.

6. Our Government:The Constitution.

  • Over 200 years ago, our Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution. The Constitution is a basic design for how our government should work. The Constitution divides the government into three branches. They are thelegislative, executive, and judicial branches.

7. Symbols of U.S. Government: The Flag

  • The United States flag has 13 stripes. Seven are red and 6 are white. It also has 50 white stars on a blue background. The stripes represent the 13 original colonies. The 50 stars represent the 50 states in the U.S. Its name isSTARS AND STRIPES.

8. The Bald Eagle

  • The bald eagleis a large, powerful, brown bird with a white head and tail. The Founding Fathers chose the bald eagle to be the national bird of the United States in 1782. This majestic bird can only be found in North America.

9. Independence Hall

  • Independence Hallis located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At this building, colonial leaders met to plan the future of the new nation.
  • Many of the most important documents in U.S. history were written at Independence Hall. Independence Hall was also the home of theLiberty Bellfor over 200 years.

10. The Liberty Bell

  • The Liberty Bellhas become the symbol of freedom in the United States. It rang when the Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence.
  • Today, the Liberty Bell hangs in Philadelphia for all to see.

11. The Statue of Liberty

  • The Statue of Libertyis located in New York. The Statue of Liberty symbolizes freedom throughout the world. The Statue was actually a gift from the people of France.

12. The White House

  • The White Houseis the home of the President of the United States. It is located in Washington, D.C. Every President except George Washington has lived there.
  • The Presidents office is called the Oval Office. Here the President does the business of the country.

13. Uncle Sam Uncle Samis a national personification of the United States and sometimes more specifically of the American government 14. The Great Seal

  • TheGreat Seal of the United Statesis the main seal of the nation and symbolizes its authority and with which official documents are stamped.
