e've decided to switch gears on the format of the editorial in USA Gym nastics maga

zine. The editorial will discuss what's in this issue and what's planned for future issues.

I want to emphasize that this magazine is for you! We want you to have input into our publication. We would love to hear from you and find out what you like, don't like, want more of, want less of, etc. Athletes, coaches, parents, judges, subscribers, please drop us a line and let us know your thoughts. (USA Gymnastics, Pan American Plaza, 201 S. Capitol Ave., Ste. 300, Indianapolis, IN 46225.)

As for this issue, the cover shows our , 994 World Championships Team. The team will travel to Dortmund, Germany, November 11-20 for the Team World Championships. This is the first Team World Championships since 1991. It should be interesting to see how the USA stacks up with the former Soviet Union competing as individual republics.

The Rhythmic World Championships took place October 6-9 in Paris, France. The focus of the World Championships was on the group competition. The USA group trained together for only three-and-a-half months prior to the competition, not very long considering many of the top teams have trained together for years. The USA group came in 17th, a good start for the new focused involve-

ment in rhythmic group. Jessica Davis competed as an individual for the USA and finished 25th overall. Davis received her first 9.0 and above scores in international competition, a personal best. It was my first rhythmic international event and itwas very exciting to watch the athleticism and talent of all the gymnasts.

Holidays are the happiest time of the year for most people. Getting together with friends and family creates special memories to cherish for a lifetime. In the articles "Happy Holidays" and "What 1'm Thankful For," we've asked some of our national team athletes, coaches and clubs what they're planning to do for the holiday season and what they're thankful for. We've also included some poems we received from some of you.

This issue features two up-and-coming athletes Kristy Powell and Mike Dutka. Powell earned the all-around silver medal in the Golden Sands event while Dutka earned five gold medals in the Junior Pan American Games.

And finally, this issue's Reebok Coaching Corner discusses conditioning tips for the cast handstand on bars. If you would like to submit a conditioning tip please send it to USA Gymnastics magazine.

Hope you enioy this issue. Next issue look for results from the , 994 World Championships, features on the athletes who did well in the event, When I Grow Up ••• Becoming a Sports Medicine Therapist, and much, much more!

By Luan Peszek

Mike Dutka just returned from the Jr. Pan American Cup in Monterrey, Mexico where he won five gold medals and finished second all·around to USA teammate Mike Morgan, now he's starting a new chapter in his life.

Dutka is one of the up·and·coming stars of the future in men's gymnastics. According to his coach Joe Stallone, "Mike's strength is that he's pretty fearless. He goes after things and doesn't hold back. He has a very positive approach to the sport. It's a game to him and the skills come very easy."

The only problem is that Dutka travel's 72 miles each way to practice five days a weekand the family has two dying cars to prove it! With parents who both occasionally work 12 hour shifts it makes getting to practice very difficult. On average Dutka trains 12·15 hours per week-not enough time in the gym to achieve the results in which he is capable. That's why Dutka moved October 1 to the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. to start a new chapter in his life. He knows that if he dedicates his time and attention to gymnastics he could increase his abilities in the gym. How does coach Joe Stallone feel about the move? Well, it was Stallone's suggestion becouse he thought it would help Dutka to focus and train on a consistent basis and achieve his goals.

"Mike's accomplishments have been fairly significant considering the time he puts in the gym," said Stallone. "With the Olympics coming up real soon he has to buckle down and get focused . I think he has a shot for the 1996 Olympic Games."

Dutka started gymnastics in 1984 in a tumbling program because his sisters were also involved in the sport.

"We had no idea when he started that it would lead us to where he is at now." said Peggy Dutka, Mike's mom. "Mike watched the Olympics in 1984 on TV and went to the Spectrum to watch the Olympians when they were in town for a tour."

Mike agrees with his mom, "I never dreamed gymnastics would take me this far." "Since he started gymnastics everyone has always told him that making the Olympic Team

is an unrealistic goal," said Mrs. Dutka. "College has always been the main goal. But, now people are talking to him about going to the Olympics."

When asked about the 1996 Olympic Games, Dutka said, "I don't know how realistic of a goal it is. The Olympics seem so close. I'm working toward it I guess."

The unrealistic goal may become a reality for Mike Dutka, only time will tell!

Send your questions to: USA Gymnastics, Ask Mory lou, Pan Ameri,an Pla.a, 201 S. Capitol Avenue, Suite 300, Indianapolis, IN 46225.

Dear Mary Lou, I'm a 12-year-old Level 9 gymnast. I'm a little concerned about my weight. What kind ollood do you suggest I eat to stay healthy and thin?

Lindsay Misslin Roseburg, Oregon

Dear Lindsay, First 01 all, at 12 years old you should not be concerned about your weight. You still have a whole lot 01 growing to do. But eating healthy, low lat loads is a super habit to start now. Eat lots 01 chicken, turkey, lish, some very lean cuts 01 beef, Iruits, vegetables, pasta, and breads. Stay away Irom high lat and Iried loads, as well as butter, heavy oils, and cream sauces. I recently lilmed a nutrition video with Dr. Dan Benardot. You may want to order a copy. It talks a lot about what an athlete should and should not eat. (See page liar details on the USA Gymnastics Nutrition Video)

Dear Mary Lou, I' m 14 years old and a LevelS gymnast. I'm S'4". I'm wondering ill'm too tall to continue doing gymnastics. I'm also lrustra ted with doing kips on bars. I make kips lor a couple weeks then I lose them. What should I do to make them all the time?

Lindsay Daves Everett, Washington

Dear Lindsay, No. You are nottoo tall. There is no hei ht

limit in gymnastics. You can be tall or short as long as you continue to maneuver your body well. With your kips, it sounds to me like you might not be concentrating enough. II you can do kips lor weeks at a time, there is no reason why you can't do them ALL THE TIME. Stay locused!

Dear Mary Lou, I'm 10 and a Level 6 gymnast. I go to gymnastics right alterschoollrom 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. It's hard to get my homework done because I get home so late and don't have any time belore gymnastics either. How did you get your homework done when you were doing gymnastics?

Kim Karfonta Edmond, Oklahoma

Dear Kim, Don't let your schoolwork suller because 01 mnastics. Your education should be

the number one priority in your lile right now. When I was training, we got out 01 school and went straight to the gym (5:00-9:00).1 would just stay up alter workout until my homework was linished. You'll need to be very disciplined with your time. Make lull use 01 your study halls or get up a little earlier in the morning to get your homework done. /I you're still having trouble keeping up, you may need to consider cutting your workout schedule down. Good luck.

Dear Mary Lou, I'm having trouble holding my handstand on 1l00LI'm supposed to hold it lor at least 30 seconds but I can't get past 10 seconds. Do you have any advice to help me improve my handstand?

Jenealle Donohue Wrightstown, Pennsylvania

Solution! ~

These Made in the U.S.A. Gymnastic shoes just keep on going, and going and going ...

Also available: * Pegasus Gemini Beamshoes * Wrist Bands * Pegasus Beginner Shoes * Beginner Grips

Dear Jeneane, It always helped me to practice my handstands on beam. Holding a handstand on beam is much easier because you can grip the sides. Once you've mastered the skill on beam lor 45 seconds to a minute, take it back down to the Iloor. Remember, keep your stomach tight and your head straight.

Dear Mary Lou, I'm 11 yea rs old. Do you enjoy getting letters lrom all different gymnasts with different problems? Are some 01 the questions hard to answer?

Lori Mastropierro Phoenix, Arizona

Dear Lori, Yes, I sure do enjoy receiving letters Irom other gymnasts. Most 01 the questions are pretty easy to answer because I have personally been through many 01 the same situotions. Hopelully, my answers will help young gymnasts conlront some 01 their problems.

Dear Mary Lou, What are you and your lamily planning to do lor the holidays?

Carly Ramsey Indian"polis, Indiana

Dear Carly, I love the holidays. My husband Shannon and I are driving up to West Virginia to spend Thanksgiving with my parents and lamily. Then, we will probably stay in Houston and spend Christmas with my husband's lamily. I can't wait.

H Oliday meals don't have to mean extra holiday fat grams. Many traditional holiday dishes and holiday baked goods can be made to cater to your low fat needs as an athlete in training. Both of these dishes fit that bill. The Sage Dressing, with 14% of its calories coming from fat, as well as the Holiday Spice Cake, with 16% of its calories coming from fat, both fall within the recommended 20% fat eating plan for a training athlete.

So have fun with these recipes and enjoy some tasty low fat dishes during your holidays!

The judges q ite yet. When at the · ro J door

We heard a sof chatter We thought to ou selves

What can be the matter. And ther in the/lobby

Stood a efYlittle girl In a shiny red leotard With her ponytail curled.

Not a gymnast, I thought Too tiny and meek

But she proved me-all wrong At the start of the meet.

She soared like an eagle And tumbled like a weed

I forgot what I was doing And watched her indeed.

Her moves on the floor Were ever so dean

Only to be bettered By her great beam routine. Her eyes had a sparkle

When she looked my direction Her bar routine finished

To almost perfection. One event left to cover

She's too small for the vault But she flew with such height

With no second thought. We all wondered in amazement

What gave her the stuff To make her, so great

And ever so tough. Was it her coaches, her parents,

Or just something she did That made us all wish

She was U our kid." The medals were hung From her neck to her knee

When we asked her, her secret She smiled with ease.

"It's not my coaches or my parents That make me do good

But they've taught me the basics And the things that they should."

"It's not in your head But what's in your heart

That makes you a winner And sets you apart."

If you would like to ask Kim Zmeskal a question, write to USA Gymnastics, Chalk Talk, Pan American Plaza, 201 S. Capitol Ave., Suite 300, Indianapolis, IN 46225.

Dear Kim, What are you doing for the holidays this year? My fami ly and I are going to visit my grandma in Chicago. I can't wait for Christmas.

Missy Wa lke II/dimwpolis, Indial/a

Dear Missy, The past two Christmas holidays I have gone to Chicago to visit Betty Okino. This year I won't be able to do the same since I need to stay in Houston to train. On Christmas day, however, my whole family is going to my grandma's house just like you. I can't wait either. I love the winter holiday season.

Dear Kim, I' m lO yearsold and a Level5gymnast. I'm 4'1" and everyone at school is a foot or so taller than me. They make fun of me. I've tried ignoring them but it doesn't work. What should I do?

Sarah Christopher HOlIstOIl, Texas

Dear Sarah, I've always been one of the shortest, or THE shortest person, in my classes. Just this month, I finally made it to 4'9". When people make comments about my height, I don't take it as an insult. Being vertically

challenged makes you special because you are different from most of your classmates. In the gym, being 4' 1" could be to your advantage. Remember that!

Dear Kim, I'm trying to move into Level 7 and our whole team is having problems with our casts on bars. Are there any types of conditioning drills or tips that you can give me to help?

Lallra Ade St. LOllis, Missollri

Dear Laura, Casts on bars may very well be the most important skill there is to master on this event. Without good handstands, the next elements in progression become

The

much more difficult. Some conditioning exercises that I do daily are assisted by my coach. Have your coach spot you doing series of casts that come down to support position in between each cast. Also, a hint for casting is to lean your shoulders forward and wait longer before casting.

Dear Kin1, I was so glad to hear that you were making a comeback for '96. I'm a big fan of yours and wou ld love to see you compete again. What was the hardest thing for you to learn when you started training in gymnastics?

JeIIl/ ifer Pm·kil/son EI Cajol/ , Califomia

Dear Jennifer, Thanks for your support in my return to

Kim Zmeskal won three consecutive U.S. Championships titles, the World Championships title and contributed to the u.s.' s bronze medal in the team competition at the 1992 Olympic Games.

competitive gymnastics. The skill that I remember taking me a while to learn when I was younger was a glide kip on bars. It was so frustrating for me, but with time it came to be no problem.

Dear Kim, I hear that you are pulling the Karolyi's out of retirement and that you are going back into competitive gymnastics. Am I right? If I am, I think that's great. Who is training with you? Congratson graduating!

Katie Canllon Blakely, Georgia

Dear Katie, You are correct. The Karolyi's and I are preparing right now for next season. My teammates that I am training with are 00-miniqueMoceanu,Jennie Thompson, Svetlana Boguinskaia and April Burkholder.

Dear Kim, I'm 10 years old and a Level 7. Do you think I have enough time to go to the Olympics?

Jessica Stork SlIIlIIyvale, Califomia

Dear Jessica, You have plenty of time to reach the Olympics. For now, have fun competing at the level you are.

The Junior NationalTeam ~ ~ summer training camp was ~ c::;77 held August 3-16 at the ~ ~ U.s. Olympic TrainingCen- ~ ter in Colorado Springs, U U U Colo. The camp was at- ~ tended by 17 of the 24 Jun-ior National Team Members which is made up of the top eight 16-18 year old Junior Elite 1's, the top eight 14-15 year old Junior Elite II's and the top eight 12-13 year old Junior Elite Ill's. Unfortunately, the start of college and some minor injuries kept some athletes from participating in this year's camp.

The staff for the camp was made up of coaches Kelly Crumley, Arnold Kvetenadze, Gene Watson, Nancy Speilkamp of the dance staff, and USA Gymnastics staff members Dennis McIntyre and Mas Watanabe. In addition, there were eight personal coaches who attended and were very involved in the camp.

The camp had three main goals for the athletes. The first goal was to reinforce and emphasize the continued development and refinement of physical preparation. This is an area of great concern for the junior national coaching staff as it is still a point of relative weakness in the junior program. The second goal was to work on skill development and this was individualized as much as possible for each gymnast. The third goal was to share training information and to motivate the athletes.

For the coaches, there were also three main objectives: to increase their technical knowledge, to increase technical and program awareness through the interaction of all the coaches and athletes, and to provide opportunities for the exchange of information between USA GymnasticS staff members and the coaches so that positive and responsive programming can continue to evolve.

There was an amazing amount of energy at the camp from both the coaches and the athletes. The camp goals were definitely met if not exceeded. The staff and athletes should be commended for their contributions to the success of the !

"I can't work years and years for nothing," complained 1992 Olympic gold medalist Lavinia Milosovici.

Prime Minister Nicolae Vacaroiu intervened to end the strike, promising to pay the gymnasts, who are current European team champions, overdue government bonuses.

Coach Octavian Belu said, "The sport and youth ministry called me last night to say our prime minister swept away all the bureaucratic barriers which held up normal prize payments. It only took one phone call, and within two hours there was a positive solution after my girls waited five months with unhonored promises."

"I hope this time all the promises will be kept and the girls will not have to go on strike again," said Belu. He was confident the team would be World Championships in Nover~"..2::2

PREVIEW OF THE 1 994 TEAM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS By Luan Peszek

The 1991 World Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., was the last time that a team competition was held at the World Championships. During the competition, the USA

women earned the silver medal, the highest finish ever received by the U.s. women at a World Championships competition. The U.s. men took fifth .

The Team World Championships will take place this year in Dortmund, Germany, November 15-20. The format of the competition is team only. No all-around or individual event champion will be crowned from this event. Shannon Miller remains the reigning World Champion!

This will be the first World Championships or Olympic Games that the former Soviet Union will compete as individual republics. In addition, it will be the first world event that utilizes the new 7-6-5 rule. This rule states that seven gymnasts comprise one team, any six of the seven gymnasts compete on one event, and five scores count. Therefore, an alternate gymnast does not have to be designated prior to the start of the competition. The team with the most depth will win.

The USA selected the top seven male gymnasts from the 1994 Coca-Cola National Gymnastics Championships. They include:

Scott Keswick, Bill Roth, Steve McCain, John Roethlisberger, Mihai Bagiu, Casey Bryan, and Kip Simons.

According to USA Gymnastics Men's Program Director Ron Galimore the goal is to place in the final round of competition or top six.

Although only three of the members of the team have competed in World Championships competition, this group has a lot of talented gymnasts and has the potential of doing very well.

For the women, the top 16 age-eligible athletes from the 1994 Coca-Cola National Gymnastics Championships were invited to compete in the NationsBank World Gymnastics Team Trials in Richmond, Va., October 15-16.

From the trials event the following athletes qualified to the team: Dominique Dawes, Shannon Miller, Kerri Strug, Amanda Borden, Amy Chow, Jaycie Phelps, and Larissa Fontaine.

This is a strong women's team and the goal is to win a medal!

Good luck to all the athletes competing at the 1994 World Gymnastics Championships. Coverage will appear in the January/February issue of USA Gymnastics magazine.

POSITIVE OUTLOOK ON THE MEN'S TEAM

By Luan Pes:z:ek

Ron Galimore, a member of the 1980 Olympic Team, joined USA Gymnastics as the Men's Program Director in March 1994. USA Gymnastics recently caught up with Galimore to get his outlook on the men's scene.

USA Gymnastics: Ron, you've attended numerous events in the months that you have worked as the

men's program director, what have been your impressions thus far? Ron Galimore: I've noticed that we have a lot of talented athletes who should do really

well internationally, but we've had a number of distractions that have resulted in not performing up to potential at important events. I feel we need to concentrate on eliminating the distractions as much as possible and continue to improve the quality of our training. Going into an event with the focus only on winning a medal is one of the main distractions. Of course winning medals is important, but the concentration should first be on hitting routines. With the focus on performing consistently-winning medals will follow. Regardless of where they are competing, an athlete's thought should be, "How well can I hit my routines?" not "I hope I can hit my routines."

USA Gymnastics: What would you like to see done differently? Ron Galimore: I'd like the coaching and judging communities to work closer together

for the best interest of USA gymnasts. It's important that the interpretation and evaluation of skills the athletes perform in the USA are up to international standards. In this way, our gymnasts will work hard to improve weak areas and will know what is expected when competing internationally.

USA Gymnastics: What have been the weak events for USA men? Ron Galimore: Weak events typically have been vault and floor. In my opinion, vault

has not been treated with the same respect as the other events. Time needs to be devoted to training and preparation in order to develop high level vaults. Many gymnasts go through practice, do a couple of vaults and move on to another event-they don' t devote the time on vault that they do on the other events. We'd like to provide more information that will assist the coaches and gymnasts on both of these events. For example, Greg Scholars gave a presentation at the Congress in Nashville about developing speed and power that was great! Greg, a former Olympic class sprinter, presented running and lower body drills that can help strengthen our gymnasts, improve their vaulting and tumbling, and enable them to do more difficult dismounts on floor.

USA Gymnastics: What are the USA men's team goals for upcoming major events? Ron Galimore: Our goal for the 1994 World Championships is to make team finals (top

6). This isn't going to be easy as we compete in the first session of the competition and we have four gymnasts who have not yet competed in a World Championships competition. If the team performs consistently, however, Team USA has a good chance of reaching this goal. By starting a trend of consistent performance now, we will be prepared in 1995 and 1996 ... with the potential for a team medal in 1996! I believe that the new FIG team competition format (7-6-5) can work in our favor because of the depth of 1995 and 1996 teams. We expect that some of the new countries will only have three or four strong gymnasts, however, the depth of other teams won't really be known until after the 1994 World Championships.

USA Gymnastics: Bright stars to watch in the future? Ron Galimore: I'm excited about this! I expect that there are about 14 guys with a

realistic shot at making the 1996 Olympic Team. We have high hopes for many of our young talented gymnasts, and are also confident that our veterans of the sport will make an enormous contribution leading up to and including the Olympic Games. The whole base of the men's program is growing stronger and stronger.
