The recent us. Olympic Team Trials-Gymnastics proved to be a great event. A fantastic crowd in

the historic city of Philadelphia and the memorable performances from all of the athletes highlighted a spectacular weekend of gymnastics. CongratulationE to all of the athletes and coaches-your hard work ' and preparation certainly was apparent on the competition floor. Team USA showed they will be a force to reckon with at the Olympic Games in Beijing

I am very proud to recognize those athletes who will represent the United States at the Olympic Games. The US. Men's Olympic Gymnastics Team includes Joey Hagerty, Morgan Hamm, Paul Hamm, Jonathan Horton, Justin Spring and Kevin Tan. The replacement athletes are Alexander Artemev, Raj Bhavsar, and David Durante. Our trampoline Olympians are Erin Blanchard and Chris Estrada. The replacement athletes for trampoline are Alain Hebert and Logan Dooley. At the time this issue went to print, Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin have been nominated to the women's team, and we eagerly await the final selection camp in Houston (July 16-20) where the rest of the women's team will be named.

As our Olympians are preparing for the Olympic Games, our Junior Olympic athletes are preparing for their upcoming seasons as well by attending summer, camps held across the country. In addition, our clubs are preparing for their National Gymnastics Day celebrations on September 13 and their Tyson Fitness Challenge events. The Tyson Fitness Challenge is once again the driving force of our fund-raising effort for the Children's Miracle Network, and we hope you can help us meet our goal of raising $1,000,000 by the NBC Broadcast Schedule end of 2008. We encourage all club owners to take advantage of the increased focus on our sport during the Games by planning something special for National Gymnastics Day.

The 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Gymnastics The U.S. Men were nominated to the U.S. Olympic Team pending usoe approval atthe U.S. Olympic Trials. The members include: Joseph Hagerty, Paul and Morgan Hamm, Jonathan Horton, Justin Spring and Kevin Tan and three alternates, Alexander Artemev, Raj Bhavsar and David Durante.

By Luan Peszek - Photography by John Cheng

Por selection of the men's Olympic Team, the men's program committee weighted the two days of Visa Championships competition as 20% each and the two days of U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Gymnastics as 30%

each to determine the final results. Team Chevron's Jonathan Horton, who is from Houston, finished first in the weighted, combined all-around rankings from the Visa Championships and U.s. Olympic Team Trials - Gymnastics, using the formula mentioned above. Joseph Hagerty finished second in the overall rankings followed by Raj Bhavsar in third and David Durante in fourth.

Horton also had the highest all-around score during day two of Olympic Trials competition with a 91.650, followed by Durante with a 90.95 and Bhavsar with a 90.20. Alexander Artemev had the highest all-around score during day one of Olympic Trials with a 90.650, followed by Horton with a 90.55 and Bhavsar with a 90.500.

The five-man men's selection committee named both Horton

and Paul Hamm to the Olympic Team after no athlete met the minimum requirements for automatic qualification, as outlined in the selection procedures. To be automatically named to the team, an athlete needed to finish in the top two in the combined, weighted all-around rankings from the two selection events, as well as place in the top three of six events using the combined results.

'Tve worked my whole life for this, to make the Olympic Team," said Horton, who competes for Team Chevron. "All of these athletes have pushed me to where I'm at today. I was just having fun out there today. I'm more confident with my gymnastics then I've ever been before."

2004 Olympic all-around champion Hamm broke the fourth metacarpal in his right hand on the first day of competition at the 2008 Visa Championships, May 22-24 in Houston, and filed a petition to the Olympic Team, which was accepted. "I have a lot of work to do to get healthy and show the committee I'm ready," said Hamm, who competes for Team Chevron.

David Sender won the Visa Championships all-around title but was injured during training prior to the Olympic Trials and was not able to compete at the Trials.

Looking at the individual events from the weighted, combined rankings of both the Visa Championships and the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Hagerty was the top gymnast on floor exercise, followed by Horton and Sean Golden. On pommel horse, Artemev was first, followed by Yewki Tomita and Guillermo Alvarez. The top three on rings were Kevin Tan, Horton and Bhavsar. On vault, Golden was first followed by Justin Spring and Bhavsar. Spring was the top score on parallel bars with Bhavsar in second and Durante in third. Hagerty had the highest score on high bar with Morgan Hamm second and Spring in third.

The men's Olympic Team was nominated on June 22, just prior to the women's team. Members include: Hagerty, Morgan and Paul Harnm, Horton, Spring and Tan. The three alternates include: Artemev, Bhavsar and Durante.

"The competition at the Trials this week has been incredible, and the USA has fielded a very strong team for Beijing," said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. "The U.S. men are medal contenders. The men's selection committee was very thorough in its deliberations to determine the best combination of men to represent us in the Games. We also want to express our thanks • to the gymnasts who have spent years pursuing their dreams and for what they have contributed to our success." ta

CHAMPIONS OF TODAY AND TOMORROW PROVE THEIR PLACE By Jessica Howard - Photos by Todd Bissonette

The 2008 Visa Championships was a dramatic

demonstration of the depth and talent that resides across the spectrum of rhythmic gymnastics in the United States.

Nineteen year old Lisa Wang of Buffalo Grove, III., won her third straight all-around national title with a score of 131.950. After convincingly winning every event gold medal during preliminary competition, she called on her experience and consistency during finals to lock in the all-around gold. Wang, who will enroll full time at Yale University this year, said "I loved being out there .... It was great doing the sport I love. It's an amazing part of my life." After 13 U.s. Senior titles, winning the Pan American Games gold, and representing the United States at three World Championships, Wang announced her retirement upon

the conclusion of the competition.

Rachel Marmer of Los Angeles, Calif., earned the silver medal and confirmed her matchless ability to manipulate apparatus and perform the riskiest routines. Ava Gehringer of Evanston, III., shook up the rankings by taking the bronze. She elegantly fought for every element and demonstrated her determination throughout each event. Julie Zetlin of Bethesda, Md., came in fourth after drops overshadowed her beautiful execution and

emotional presence on the floor. Rebecca Wallenstein of Jacksonville, Fla., performed intricate routines with extreme flexibility, securing a fifth place finish . Sofya Roytbu rg, Sarah Kudishevitz, and Joanna Arnold ranked 6-8 respectively in a very tightly contested fight to make the National Team.

Anastasia Torba, with her physical strength and apparatus technique, and Victoria Syatkina with her infectious expression, came in fourth and fifth respectively. Coming in at number six was Michelle Milstein, who was arguably the most artistically mesmerizing athlete of the entire compet it ion. Rounding out the National Team was the long and lithe Katherine Scarnechia coming in seventh, and securing the eighth and f inal spot was eleven year old powe~ house Polina Kozitsky-. i2
