EDITORIAL LETTER

Keep On TruckingGreetings and welcome to the all-new Uptime, Volvo trucks malaysia’s Customer magazine. We hope this new exciting take on the publication continuously serves not only as an entertaining, insightful and brilliant read but also serves as a form of communication for all of us in this industry especially as we move into the halfway point of 2013.

it’s been an exciting and eventful start to the new year for us here at Volvo malaysia. We said goodbye to mr. mansoor Ahmed, who served as our managing Director since 2011. mansoor was indeed an integral part of our success last year. Under his guidance, the company has further strengthened its solid foundation in this region, and, as a consequence, has achieved tremendous growth, which we all intend to build on in the coming years and beyond.

personally, i am proud, honoured and humbled to take over this very important market here in malaysia and am very excited to be in this great part of the world. i am in a listening mode and my intention is to make my learning curve as short as possible through the inputs and dialogue with the extended Volvo malaysia team, including our staff, our business partners and, most importantly, our customers.

in our type of business, there will always be issues and the important thing is that there is a constructive dialogue and that we act fast and decisively when issues occur. i truly want us to be second to none as a business partner and in performance. i look very much forward to meeting many of our customers at different sites and events, to be able to interact, and, perhaps to have a game of golf in connection with our championship later in the year.

Golf aside, we have planned a number of exciting new engaging programs for our valued customers, fleet owners and drivers. We have embarked on a Social media initiative with our very own Facebook page and we are also actively expanding with our Globe truckers Club with a membership drive. i invite all of you to join us on these two exciting programs if you haven’t already.

Last but not least, i am very pleased to announce the return of the Volvo Fuelwatch Challenge this year. the event, which is into its fourth year, has undoubtedly served as one of the signature events of the truck industry both on the global front as well as locally owing to its call to promote fuel efficient driving. i personally hope many of you take the opportunity to take part in this exciting and successful global fuel efficiency competition. Do look out for news and updates from us regarding the Volvo Fuelwatch Challenge in the next few months.

Until next time, keep on trucking!

THE CUSTOMER

mr. Yew Choo Kein, the managing Director of Jasa Selamat Sdn. Bhd. talks to us about the business of transport and how he grew his business.

Cemented in successS

tarting out as a transport company in 1975 with one truck, one driver outfit moving groceries and small items in Chemor, Ipoh, Jasa Selamat Sdn. Bhd. is now one of the biggest cement

haulers in the Northern region with 150 trucks of various brands and models. Uptime catches up with Mr. Yew Choo Kein, the Managing Director of the company to find out more about the challenges he faced and the secret to the company’s success.

Mr. Yew started his business in 1975 right after leaving school at age 17. When other teenagers were out having fun in the fields and taking camping holidays, this enterprising young man looked at a business opportunity. His older brother had a small one-tonne lorry and was delivering wholesale groceries in the Ipoh area. The business soon flourished and so the young Yew decided to get himself a license and a small three-tonne truck and join his brother right after leaving school.

As the years moved on, the enterprising businessman established his own new clients and soon he was running his own transport business with two trucks and a hired driver. Business grew and the need to expand came quick and

so Jasa Selamat Sdn. Bhd. was established. As the years progressed, the need to expand his fleet of trucks meant buying brands that not only offered good value, but more importantly reliability, fuel efficiency and low maintenance. All the qualities needed to increase profitability.

Throughout establishing and growing his business, Mr. Yew has bought and run a lot of different truck brands and over the years he has been impressed with Volvo trucks and he will continue to use Volvo trucks. In fact, he has just placed a rather large order with Volvo Malaysia to renew his older fleet of prime movers.

Tell us about your business – what sort of goods do you carry and the routes you operate? Our biggest client is the cement industry. Almost 99% of our business is the movement of cement. Nearly all of our tankers are for cement and a few others for cargo movement when the need arises. What trucks have you previously operated before buying the Volvo? When I first started moving cement I used Japa-nese made trucks. I started with Volvo trucks about eight-years ago. Now I operate in total 150

trucks of which 95% are prime movers and the rest are tippers and cargo trucks.

How would you compare your trucking needs then and now? We have been in the transport business since 1975. I started driving a truck at age of 17 using a three tonne truck and soon thereaf-ter my business grew to what it is today. My business has evolved fast as I have embraced technology in the trucks that I use. What are the qualities you look for when buying a truck? We look first at technology, the power to

pull heavy loads, a good engine and fuel economy of course. All trucks before being purchased are tested and looked at by me personally. How important is after sales service from the brand owner for you as a com-mercial user? After sales is very important for us as fleet owners as every downtime on a truck is cost to us. If there’s anything you’d like to wish for to add to your truck now, what would it be and why? I want a telematics system with a satellite link back to my office which relays engine information such as fuel levels, battery con-dition, engine oil level, driver speed and so on, when the truck is out on the road. Looking forward, what’s in store for your business in the future, and how would your trucking needs evolve from here?We currently have 61 Volvo trucks of vari-ous models and ages, 20 units of this are brand new Volvo trucks. If the price is favourable, my replacement trucks will all be Volvo trucks in the future.

Although barely 30-years-old, mr. ilangkathiravan or better known as en. Kadir has already made his mark in the field of logistics.

In for the long haul

For a relatively young company, PCI Gas Trading has already carved a niche for itself in the transport industry. Starting out just five years ago with a one tonne lorry, owner En. Kadir saw an

opportunity in the business and eventually made plans for a rapid expansion. Today, PCI Gas Trading’s operations encompass over 20 units of one tonne and three tonne lorries as well as five prime movers and there are no signs of this business reducing anytime soon.

En. Kadir started his transport business behind the wheel himself. A lorry driver from the day he collected his driving license, Kadir was behind the wheel himself for years moving LPG tanks for restaurants and small grocery shops. He soon realised a possible business opportunity and expanded his business by selling his services to more users. Instead of concentrating on individual business deliveries, Kadir looked at the wholesale aspect of the business. His services meant having a stockyard and moving LPG tanks when necessary 24-7. His business grew quickly and today he operates a fleet of trucks and small lorries moving LPG tanks all around the state of Selangor.

Why did you purchase this Volvo FM440, 6x2RAS I-Shift truck?I started looking to expand my fleet a few months ago and did some shopping for prime movers. My business was growing fast and I needed to get a new prime mover quickly. Maybe it was fate when Volvo Trucks came to see me a few days later and they could deliver immediately. I looked at the price, features and after sales program and made a decision. The Volvo truck was delivered to me in just a week and I could immediately start moving large qualities of LPG tanks from the depot in Melaka to Shah Alam. Our client also wanted us to use

the latest trailer (as shown in photograph) which has ABS and traction control systems built into it for added safety on the road. This high technology trailer needs the latest technology prime mover to work with it and my new Volvo FM440, 6x2RAS I-Shift fits it perfectly. My client is happy and I can move more LPG tanks now in a single trip. My Volvo FM440 is saving me money on every trip we make. Can you share with us a quick introduction of your business?PCI Gas Trading does LPG distribution exclu-sively and only for the state of Selangor. What is the philosophy that drives your company? There isn’t one really, the company is 100% my own and I built it up from ground up.

How big is your fleet? How many truck and drivers do you have?At the moment we have five prime movers and 20 trucks in the fleet along with 26 truck drivers. I also have a license to drive a truck, which is useful at times.

“Volvo had a lot of service induced packages that made the whole buying process a lot better. It was a good time to also try and new brand to see what difference it would make to my business”

What sort of goods do you carry and what are the routes that you service? Just LPG tanks of two sizes— 12 kg and 14kg. What sort of feedback have you received from your drivers with regards to the trucks you use?Lately there’s a lot of positive feedback on the Volvo truck that we use, which is the FM440, 6x2RAS I-Shift. This truck is automatic driven, has better power, driver cabin comfort and bet-ter fuel economy over the previous truck.

What does your company see as the most important qualities in a truck?Personally, buying a truck for a company like ours, I do place importance with the sales team, after sales servicing and high efficiency as well as price.

Of all trucks available in the market, why Volvo? Have you operated or considered other brands? For one, the suspension, brakes and service package were far better than the previous truck brands that I have had. Also, Volvo had a lot of service induced packages that made the whole buying process a lot better. It was a good time to also try and new brand, Volvo to see what difference it would make to my business.

What would be your company’s direction looking forward and how would your fleet grow along with it?In a span of five years I have expanded my fleet from just one truck to the fleet I have to-day. Looking ahead I can see the possibilities of my business doubling and certainly having more Volvo trucks in my fleet.

Old faithful

en. Zulfifly is a big fan of Volvo trucks and he’s even got his own Facebook page to prove it. in fact, you can visit his Facebook page and communicate with him as he is often online chatting with other drivers and even offering advice where possible. He keeps up-to-date with all the latest Volvo trucks news and developments and posts relevant information on his Facebook page. He hopes that one day he will be able to visit the Volvo truck factory in Sweden and have his very own brand spanking new Volvo truck to haul cargo. Zul started his driving career as a bus driver for an express bus company but moved to trucks after two years. Since then he has not looked back and enjoys every trip he makes until today. He works for a haulage company that uses a variety of truck brands, but the 1995 Volvo FL 10 (pictured here) is his steed of choice and he will not give her up so easily. Zul will also be taking part in the coming Volvo Fuelwatch challenge which is a yearly event held to show the fuel efficiency of Volvo trucks and at the same time train drivers on the best way to drive their trucks. Zul aims to win the 1st prize at this year’s competition.

Why did you setup a Volvo truck Facebook page?i have admired Volvo trucks since i first started driving. When i first started driving, the internet wasn’t readily available. A few years ago when i learnt how to set up a Facebook account i realised that this will be a good avenue for me to interact with other Volvo truck drivers and enthusiasts from around the world and share information. it also allowed me to learn more about the trucks and meet like minded drivers in malaysia and around the world.

it is unusual to meet a truck enthusiast who is also a driver operator in malaysia. We meet with en. Zulfifly who is a career truck driver, now working for Nakhoda Logistics and an avid Volvo truck fan.

Tell us about your Volvo truck and how it has helped your business? For a truck…any truck, Volvo is for life. my truck, which is a 1995 FL 10 320 hp local assembled model is now already 18 years old and it is my faithful ride as it has never failed me on the road. We are the third owner of this truck and it has been a good companion to me for the past one year.

What are the qualities that you look for in a truck?Compared to other models, Volvo makes trucks to suit any condition as long as you follow the conditions of the truck which is servicing and original parts. it is dependable, reliable and Volvo trucks last longer than other brands.

How important is after sales service?Very important! Sometimes people choose not to go to Volvo because of its pricing but it pays off in the long run. there are many imitation parts in the market and so it’s best to go back to Volvo for maintenance or to buy parts. Do you occasionally get under the hood of your truck yourself?Yes i do, the other day the air pressure hose gave away while i was on a road trip. i could hear the hissing sound and this made my gear shifts difficult. i pulled the edge of the hose out, crimped it a little and pushed it back in and it continued to work flawlessly. i eventually got my company mechanic to change it with a brand new hose.

Page 23: Uptime issue #1,2013

Uptime #1 / 2013 23

How many kilometres do you travel in a month?in a day, i travel between 180km to 200km. i drive six days a week.

What is your dream truck?the Volvo FH 12 440 or 420 is my dream truck. Best of all would be the latest 2013 FH truck because it comes with a new suspension driver’s seat for best in class comfort, climate control and the latest Volvo sound system. if i am tired and need to sleep at a rest area, the climate control

system will run without the engine needing to be switched on and therefore less fuel wastage and more importantly, better sleep.

Personally, what would you like to see new from Volvo Trucks Malaysia?i would like to suggest for Volvo trucks malaysia to conduct more driver training in accident avoidance. the younger drivers need more training. i would also like see designated truck or bus rest areas along the highway as space is becoming limited for drivers to park and rest. it would also nice to see an association set-up for truck drivers to assist drivers with problems.

iFS system to extreme forces in the shake rig. The signals that control the shaking have been collected in the form of data from a test vehicle at the Volvo trucks’ proving ground in hällered outside gothenburg.“at the proving ground, the test vehicle is sub-jected to a number of gruelling road tests. on the axle, there are a number of sensors that register forces and movements during the tests,” explains Bror Lundgren.

By transferring this data and then using it in the shake rig, the conditions at the proving ground can be re-created. The data that is used only simulate the parts of the proving ground where the test vehicle is subjected to the heavi-est loads. in this way, the tests are optimised in terms of time, as unnecessary driving and other kinds of downtime can be eliminated.“in the shake rig the number of loads on the structure is much larger than it would ever be in real life in order to make sure that the system is strong enough.” explains Bror Lundgren. The axle is tested hundreds of times in the shake rig during a test period lasting 10 weeks. Bror Lundgren looks up at the test axle in the rig and explains the importance of all the tests.“we have a responsibility to our customers and that is to test and keep testing until we are sure that the system is ready for production. as we are going to use this new technology in the future, it

DRIVER DEVELOPMENT

Creating a better driverWe talk to Ian Sinclair Product Director Asia Sales Volvo Group Trucks Sales & Marketing APAC to find out more about Volvo’s Driver Training Programme.

Can you give us an overview on the Volvo Driver Training Programme and what is it about?

The Volvo Driver Development Program is predominantly about ensuring our custom-ers and their employees operate their Volvo Trucks in the most efficient way. By following our program, the operator will be able to deliver the best value to the truck owner by operating the vehicle in the safest manner, with lowest fuel consumption whilst ensuring that the truck is maintained at the lowest cost and over a longer duration. Our targets are those individuals who are lucky enough to operate a Volvo truck to earn their living. From our local side, there are basically two programmes on offer right now– Driver training and Driver Trainer TTT (Train the Trainers).

The lessons taught in this programme, do they apply most specifically to just Volvo trucks, or are they valid for most brands of trucks on the market?

Both are true, part of every program contains basic generic practises that are valid for all brands and we also focus on how to get the best value out of your Volvo truck. Volvo trucks have

32 UPTIMe #1 / 2013

Page 33: Uptime issue #1,2013

many features not found on our competitors that assist the driver in being able to minimise fuel consumption and maximise safety and effi-ciency. We show the driver how to leverage these features and increase profit for the truck’s owner.

Most people are aware of the safety aspect with regards to driver training, but before we go into that, what are the primary cause of accidents involving buses and trucks?

If we look at the three factors that are involved in truck and bus accidents— roads, mechanical failure or human factors, by far the most prevalent is the human factor which has a major contribution in over 90% of accidents. We stress this in all our training and that the driver must always remain alert and aware of the traffic conditions. Locally, the first part of both programmes covers safety in line with Volvo core values.

In your experience, the drivers that attend your training, how lacking are they in terms of practicing safe driving techniques?

We are always surprised by either the lack of knowledge or the lack of application of that knowledge when it comes to safety. For instance

every driver knows that the most important safety feature on the truck is the seat belt, how-ever sad to say the percentage who wears the seat belt is still very low. More advanced concepts such as defensive driving and handling vehicles in emergency situations are unknown to the vast majority of drivers who attend our training. We aim to give the drivers good safety habits such as wearing seat belts, constantly checking mirrors and traffic conditions, anticipate braking distances and not having loose items in the cab. Once these basics are in place then we can move onto the more advanced concepts.

Your programme syllabus states ‘eco-nomical driving’ as a subject covered. How much fuel can you really save just by alter-ing your driving technique alone?

This depends on the driver; we have seen results as high as 30% improvement. Results between 5-10% are common. Once again, it’s about teaching the driver good habits, smooth progressive shifting patterns, staying low in the rev range and anticipating braking and accelera-tion. Often drivers are using their ears to drive, over revving the engine, braking harshly and then needing to accelerate too quickly, these

habits give high fuel consumption and are com-mon in most drivers. What about wear and tear? Are there techniques that can be taught to drivers on how to significantly stretch the service life of your wear and tear parts?

The same style of driving that saves fuel will also decrease maintenance costs. Smooth accel-erating and braking lowers drive-line wear, op-erating low in the rev range increases engine life, proper use of the engine brake can more than double wheel brake life halving brake mainte-nance costs. It’s simple to see why our customers are so keen to have good quality driver training, good driving gives increased safety, lower fuel consumption and decreased maintenance cost as well as high employee satisfaction for the driver in the knowledge that they are doing a good job.

The programme also covers daily mainte-nance and inspection. What are they being taught to look out for in these inspections?

Volvo Trucks have a recommended daily inspection that must be carried out each day before the truck starts work. The reason for this is to ensure that the truck is in a safe and proper

UPTIMe #1 / 2013 33

Page 34: Uptime issue #1,2013

34 UPTIMe #1 / 2013

condition to operate. It is a visual inspection to check fluid levels, tyre pressure and condition and general condition of the truck. We train drivers to look at those areas that are most vul-nerable and can affect the safe and proper opera-tion of the truck. Just by taking a few minutes at the beginning of the day we can avoid expensive breakdowns or accidents by a thorough inspec-tion of the vehicle.

The maintenance aspect of the training - with this competence, how much can an owner save in overall maintenance costs in terms of reduced downtime and money?

Maintenance should always be carried out by a trained mechanic; however the driver can cer-tainly contribute in a major way by keeping main-tenance costs to a minimum. Firstly, by driving the truck in the recommended fashion, smoothly, low in the rev range avoiding harsh braking and over acceleration. Secondly, by doing daily checks looking for problems that may appear around the truck and drawing attention to these before they

become major issues. Lastly, by being aware of the truck and changes to its behaviour, will point to the type of maintenance being required. This can be as simple as keeping an eye on the kilometres travelled and making sure that the truck does not miss its next scheduled service. Noticing that the braking performance is deteriorating will also highlight brake maintenance is required.

How does this programme help participat-ing drivers in terms of career development?

We give the drivers the necessary tools they require to be an excellent driver. By following the training they can operate the vehicles in the safest and most fuel efficient manner which means they will be a highly valued employee. Such employees attract highly salaries, opportunities for promo-tion and are sought after by other transport companies. Highly skilled drivers can go on to becoming Driver Trainers, Dispatch Managers or Fleet Managers. Indeed, experience behind the wheel is highly valued in the logistics industry management.

For big fleet operators, is this programme useful as a team-building exercise?

Indeed we have seen some companies start competitions internally for safe driving, most fuel efficient driving and most improved driving. These types of competitions not only improve company moral and employee camaraderie but also have shown a financial benefit for the com-pany. A perfect example would be Volvo’s very own Fuelwatch Challenge, which hammers home the message of promoting fuel efficient driving. The ultimate winner of Volvo Truck’s Fuelwatch Challenge for the region receives an all-expense paid trip to Sweden/Australia to compete in the World/Asia Finals.

“We train drivers to look at those areas that are most vulnerable and can affect the safe and proper operation of the truck. Just by taking 10 minutes at the beginning of the day we can avoid expensive breakdowns or accidents by a thorough inspection of the vehicle”
