Q:  If a 5 year old student is in preschool, which meal patterns does the school follow for that student?

Preschool FAQs

A: The meal pattern applies to the grade, not the age of individual students. So, when a 5 year old is in a preschool, the school follows the preschool meal pattern requirements. Similarly, if a 4 year old is in kindergarten, the school follows the K‐5 meal pattern.

A: Yes!  Although the intent of the preschool meal pattern is to limit the amount of juice that preschoolers receive, FNS acknowledges that it would be logistically challenging to coordinate juice service between two separate programs.

Q:  Does the flavored milk flexibility outlined in SP 32‐2017 “School Meal Flexibilities for School Year 2017‐2018” extend to the preschool meal patterns?

A: No, this does not extend to the preschool meal pattern because preschoolers are not allowed to have flavored milk under the updated meal pattern.  The milk options for preschoolers are either unflavored low‐fat or unflavored fat‐free milk.
