The annual Middle School market has now been running for 10 years. It’s a great way for the Middle School students to mix and provide for the primary students – and they love it. This year, for the first time, we invited parents to come and have a look as well. Thank you to the JP parents that came in to explore the market with their children.

This year our year 7s made all the craft

items, the year 8s cooked all the yummy goodies, whilst the year 9s organised and ran the games.

Keeping with tradition, students were given tokens to play the games and buy the food. This kept costs to the families at a minimum.

Well done to the middle school team – teachers and students – on another great school event.

Term 4 has started well with students quickly settling into their final period of formal school learning for 2015. Students have reflected on their academic achievements, have set some goals in terms of their learning and are working their way towards achieving them. This term is like all others in that it is jammed packed with learning opportunities – both within and extra to the curriculum: exams, transition activities, swimming lessons, camps and End of Year Assemblies are just a few of those and the term promises to be a positive one!

The year 12s are coming to the end of their year with the completion of major Art Works, practice exams, final major assignments and the general stress of finishing a milestone in one’s life. The importance of good study skills and time management, healthy sleep and nutrition and limiting social events and paid work w ill be necessary over the next few weeks to ensure students achieve their best. Thank you to all teachers who dedicated time over the holidays to support students at this crucial time.

At the end of Term 3 we asked parents to participate in a survey to help us in our quest for continuous improvement. Thank you to the parents who have returned their surveys. In order for the survey to be valid we need another 30 families to respond. We have kept the survey open for an extra 2 weeks in the hope that surveys can be returned to school by tomorrow (Friday 16th October) for inclusion in the collation. (We are hoping that the paper surveys given out at interviews are sitting on kitchen benches waiting to come back but if not; please drop into the front office so that we can print off another). Your views are extremely important to us and we thank you for helping us in this way.

It is important to focus on the good things that are happening so that we can keep doing these things and expand on them. A summary, but by no means an exhaustive list of the good things that happened in Term 3 and the recent holiday break are the following:

• A substantial decrease in behaviour incidents • An extremely successful Tournament of Minds

team – a competition designed to stretch

Working Bee One way to make consistent improvements to our school facilities and environment is for us to host an annual working bee. This year the Governing Council has elected Sunday the 18th of October – we hope many people will be able to be involved.

students to think well and work as a team • 8 Middle School students attended Youth

Workshops at Flinders University • Science week activities that extended all

learners in Years 3-9 • Choir performance in Adelaide • Hospitality Market evening • Outdoor Ed camps • Tour to Japan with 17 students and 4 adults

as chaperones • Japanese Homestay • Year 3/4 Camp • A hugely successful Reading Evening at the

Library • An expanded Market Day to include parents,

where students excelled • Year 9 $20 Boss program that required

students to set up their own business • Early Years excursion to the Zoo • Aboriginal Cultural Day in the park • An increase in the number of students

participating and excelling in National Competitions

I am incredibly proud of what our students achieve and hope that you are too!

I am also proud of all staff at Moonta Area School who go above and beyond each and every day. This year, 5 of our teachers were acknowledged by the parent community and were nominated for the SA Public Teaching Awards. Congratulations go to:

• Caroline Hutchins • Fiona Ryan • Anneleise Couch • Mailyn Thomas • Sally Hackett

It is wonderful to be a part of such a vibrant Educational Community!

All the best for the last educational stretch of 2015!

On Thursday 17th September, Riley Williams and I travelled to Government House in Adelaide to attend a Youth Leaders Reception hosted by the Governor of South Australia, His Excellency Mr Hieu Van Lay.

As Senior School captains, Riley and I were fortunate to attend this special function.

His Excellency Mr Hieu Van Lay, Mrs Lay, Minister of Education and Child Development Mrs Susan Close and government advisors greeted and then joined the leaders of each school for refreshments in the main hall of Government House. At the beginning of the ceremony, his Excellency addressed the audience and inspired us with a motivation speech. He told us to find opportunity in times of hardship, and never to be discouraged by our age. He also reminisced of the hardship he had been through as a young boy, and how he had overcome each and every one of them to be where he is today. The Governors speech was very motivational and engaged each student to think about their future and the hardships they would face.

After receiving advice from The Governor himself, The Minister of Education, Mrs Close, spoke about her life and her journey to success. Mrs Close highlighted the importance of hard work in achieving your goals. Riley and I were then taken on a guided tour The Government House and were told about the history of the House and about past and present Governors.

Riley and I were honoured to attend the reception on behalf of Moonta Area School as it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. We learnt many valuable lessons about life and how to overcome difficulties that we may face. We would like to thank the school for this opportunity and also Wendy Williams for taking time out of her day to drive us down to the reception.

The Year 8/9 teams travelled to Jamestown to play 5-a-side Indoor Soccer on Wednesday the 16th of September. We were up against seasoned players from Balaklava and Jamestown.

Our girl’s team pulled off an amazing effort to go down 3-4 in the last 30 seconds. Nickala Smith was a star in defence and in goals while Jess Bones also saved at least 5 attempts on goals in the second half. Caitlan Young, Bethany Legg, Ruby Markham, Brooke Keywood and Ellen Paterson switched it up to make sure the midfield and front lines held plenty of opportunities. Over the game the girls became a formidable team!

Our boy’s team had 2 games – both against teams who had been playing together for many years. William van Riet, Tom van Riet and Ryan Mulholland all had a turn in goals – all made some specky saves! Reggie Clarke used his superior ball skills to steal, weave and score on many occasions. Kane Drewett, Cameron Turner and Tyler Moore used speed and agility to pass, steal and defend. The boys played well, however went down to both teams 7-8 and 5-9.

A great day had by all. A special thanks to Adam Moore who helped manage teams and transport us all there!
