Midnight Jookin’ by Jerry Gant

AWILDA RIVERA HONORED

On December 2, City Lore, the nationally acclaimed not-for-profit organization devoted to preserving New York’s urbanculture, ushered in a handful of New York City’s most

beloved and enduring radio DJs, representing some of the mostfamiliar letters on the radio dial, into the People’s Hall of Fame.

Held in collaboration with the Museum of the City of New York, where the ceremony took place, the 12th People’s Hall of Fameawards ceremony and dance party, was a public acknowledg-ment of the important role played by these six New York DJs,including WBGO’s Awilda Rivera, host of Latin Jazz Cruise(Tuesdays 8–10pm) and Evening Jazz (Weeknights 8pm–1am)

“While we tend to think of radio as a national mediumº, from itsinception, broadcast radio has maintained a strong local compo-

nent, one anchored by local personalities who often promoted regional musicians and communityevents,” notes Ray Allen, from the Hitchcock Institute for American Music at Brooklyn College andhost for the award ceremony. “Even here in New York, the capital of commercial music, radio hasplayed a strong role in nourishing local music cultures.”

WBGO congratulates Awilda for this honor, and we are honored she is part of our team!

Most people have heard the question: if a tree falls in theforest, and no one is there, will it make a sound? Thatexpression is especially poignant for a community pub-

lic radio station that produces a jazz series for young people. While WBGO’s Kids Jazz Concert Series includes amazingly tal-ented performers, beautiful venues, informative question andanswer sessions and fun times, all at no cost, we wanted to know

how we could reach even more kids, so that our “trees” make as much sound as possible!Enter The Agnes Varis Trust, whose mission is supporting affordable access to the arts,

education and healthcare. Through the generous support of the WBGO Kids JazzConcert by the Varis Trust, plus PNC and the Coleman Family Charities and others,WBGO will be able to celebrate the 20th anniversary season of the Kids Jazz ConcertSeries with more young people than ever before. How? The grant dollars will support anewly launched program to provide transportation to youth organizations in EssexCounty to get young people to and from each of the five concerts this April and May.

WBGO kicks off the 20th Kids Jazz Concert Series on Saturday, April 6 at NewarkSymphony Hall. These free Saturday afternoon concerts will bring jazz culture and per-formance to five Essex County, New Jersey venues. The interactive, hour-long programsgive young people opportunities to learn about the distinct qualities of jazz, and why it isa reflection of our community, nation, and world. The performers produce special pro-grams tailor-made for young people.

All concerts begin at 12:30pm, and are free. Adults must be accompanied by a child.
