BostonMassacre

TodaywasMarch5th,mybirthday.Theyearwas1770,aperfectlyfinenormalyear.JustwhenIthoughtnothingspecialwouldhappen,Isaw3oftheColonistsgettingshotandkilledbythemightysoldiersfromBritish.Thisallstartedwithalittlekid.OneofthelittlekidsstartedtotauntandinsultoneoftheBritishsoldiers.Thesoldiergotangryandhitthelittleboymakinghimcry.Asapeacefulcarpenter,Idonotbelieveinviolencehowever,theannoyingkiddiddeservesomebeatingfortheunnecessaryinsults.Thekidwenthomeandbroughtbackhisfriendsandtheirparentswhowereallcolonists.

Irecognizedoneofthemasmycustomers.Thefatherofthelittlekidhadonceboughtsomecarpetsfrommystore.AlthoughIwantedtoofferhelp,IamaloyalistandcannothelpacolonistwhowantedrebellionandfreedomfromthemightyBritishEmpire.Anyway,theriotstartedtogetbiggerandbiggerandthenumberofpeoplebegantoincreasewhichwasapparentlyquitethreateningtotheredcoats.Thesoldierswerestartingtogetimpatientwiththewildcrowdwhoseemedtohavenothingininterestbutdisturbance.Finallyaftersomeshoutsandstonethrowsthatcaughtthesoldiersoffguard,thesoldiersdecidedtoattackandshotthreecolonists.Itdidnottakelongfortheothercoloniststorunawaytosafety.Oneofthemevenwantedtocomeintomyshoptohidefromthebullets.IpolitelyrefusedandsaidIdonotsupportthecolonists,whichmadetheguyrunawaytoanotherstoreaskingforhelp.Iclosedmyshopworryingmorecolonistswouldcomehereforsafetyandmakemepartoftheirrebellion.Ilockedthedoorofmyshopandlookedoutthewindowofmyshoptoseewhatisgoingonoutside.Threemenwerelyingonthegroundpaintingitred.Itwasironictoseethattheredcoatsmakingthegroundred.Asaloyalistandproudcarpenter,Johnhill,IwenttotheBritishsoldiersandtoldthemaboutthecolonistslocationwhichtheysimplyignoredandwentbacktotheirbusiness.Later,afterfewdayspassed,themassacrewasinthenewspapers,whichcontainedangrythoughtsabouttheBritishsoldiersandhowthekillingwasunnecessary.Thiswasridiculousbecausethecolonistsweretheonewhostartedthefightandcausedariot.AnywayIshouldbegoingbacktotheloyalistmeetingthatisopeningtodayatthe

ThedatewasDecember16th,1773anditwasapeacefuldaylikeeveryotherdayinBoston.IwaswalkingdownthestreetneartheharborwhenIsawIndiansdumpingteaovertheship.Iwasoutragedandwasabouttogostopthemwhenoneofthemenstandinginfrontofmegrabbedmeandsaid,”Theyarecolonistsindisguise,andtheyareoneofus,patriots”.Irepliedsaying,”IamaloyalistanddumpingBritishteaisquiteunnecessary.”ThenIranuptotheharborandshouted,”whatareyoupeopledoing!Thisisinsane”.ThecolonistsintheircleverIndiandisguiseignoredmeandcontinuedthrowingteaoverboard.AlthoughIknewthatthecolonistsdidnotwishtopurchaseteabecauseitwasquiteexpensive,thiswasanoutrage.ThiswillmaketheBritishangryandcanpossiblyleadtowar.IgotafeelingthattheBritishwillmakeharshnewlaws.Afteraboutsixmonthspassed,theBritishparliamentmadetheintolerableactaspunishmentfortheTeapartythathappenedalmostayearago.InJune1,1774,theBritishwereangryabouttheteapartyandcametoBostonwiththeirwarships.TheywereheretoclosetheBostonharborfromothertrades.About4000soldierscameoutofthewarshipsandwentmarchingaroundthetown.Manycolonialworkershatedthesoldiersandglaredatthem.IdidnotfearthesoldierssinceIwasaloyalistwhodidnotparticipateintheteapartythathappenedlastyearinDecember16th.Iwenttooneoftheofficerstoexplainhowtheloyalistswerenotpartoftheteapartyandshouldnotreceivethepunishment.Theofficersaidinacoldvoice,“Itdoesnotmatterwhetheryouwerepartoftheteapartyornot,theparliamentwantsjusticeandyouwillgetit”.Theyreturnedthenextdayandthecolonistswereoutragedaboutit.Joe,amanwithbiginfluencethatleadthecolonistssuggestedboycottingtheBritishgoods.Thenextday,peoplestoppedpurchasinganysortofBritishgoods,whichIfeltbadforthepeoplesellingthem.Irealizedwithshockthatmanyofthecolonistshavebecomepatriots.

In1775,April20,IwasstayingataguesthouseinaLexingtonforafewdaystoattendanimportantmeetingwhenIsawamanridingahorsetowardsmeshouting,“Theredcoatsarecoming!”IrecognizedhimasPaulRevere,asilversmithwhowasfamousforhiswork.HewasshoutingsohardthatIstillheardhimforquitesometimeafterhelefttheguesthouse.Aftersometime,hugenumberofBritishsoldierscamemarchingtothetownwithmuskets.RememberingtheBostonmassacrethathappenedinMarch6th,Ifeltsomethingviolentwasgoingtohappenandwentupstairstomyroomandlockedthedoor.Ilookedoutsidethewindowtoseehundreds,maybethousandsofBritishsoldiers.Oneofthesoldiers,whoappearedtobeahighofficer,orderedhistrooptostop.Iknewthattheminutemen,aforceofprivatecolonistswhoweretrainedtofightwashidingandreadytoambushthesoldiers.Iwentdownstairsandshouted,“It'satrap!Theminutemenarehidingbesidetheroad!”.Theywereeasilyspottedbytheminutemenandwereambushed.TheBritishsoldiers,whodidnotexpecttheambushfoughttheirbestbutretreated,knowingthattheirlossofsoldierswasbiggerthanthoseofcolonists.

DeclarationofIndependence

ItwasaboutayearafterthebattleofLexingtonandConcordhappenedwhenthecontinentalcongressdecidedtodraftthedeclarationofindependence.Newswentthroughthewholetown.ThePatriotswereexcitedthinkingachievingindependencewasnotfaraway.IthoughthiswasaverystupidideasincetheBritishhadthecoloniesforareasons.ThecoloniesweresupportingthemwithresourcessuchasmoneyandfoodandtheBritishwouldnotgiveupthemeasily.WhycannotpeoplejustaccepttherulesoftheBritishandlivepeacefullywassomethingIwasnotabletounderstand.IdecidedtogotellthecontinentalcongressthatwritingthedeclarationofIndependencewasastupidthingtodo.ThedeclarationofIndependencewouldprobablystartoffanotherbattle,whichwouldbringgreatlosstoBoston.IreadthecopyofthedeclarationofIndependencethatIgotfromafriend.Itsaidallmenarecreatedequallyandtheyhavenaturalrights,whichcannotbetakenawayfromthem,tolife,liberty,andthepursuitofhappiness.AlthoughIunderstoodthelogicithad,IknewthattheBritishwouldrejectthis.Ihopedthatthecitizenswouldbesmartenoughtorealizehowstupidthisideawas.Afterfewmonthsquicklypassed,IwaspassingbyafurnitureshopwentIheardmentalkinginsuchajoyfulmannerthatIhadtoaskwhattheirtalkingabout.Itturnsouttheyweretalkingabouthowthedeclarationofindependencegotapprovedbythesecondcontinentalcongressandhowtoday,July2,1776,asa

historicaldayforthecolonists.Realizingthiswasnothappynewsfortheloyalistswhowerealsopartofthecolonists,Icorrectedhimsaying,“No,it'sahappydayforthepatriotsnotthecolonists”.Asthemenheardthewordloyalisttheystoppedtalkingandjuststaredforalongtime.Irealizedloyalistsarenotwelcomehereandstartedtowalkawaybeforesomethingbadhappens.IvisitedNewJerseyduringChristmastomeetwithmyfriendswhenIheardlotsofsoldiers,minutemenmarchingpastmewithWashingtonleadingthem.Iquicklyborrowedahorseanddecidedtofollowthem.TheywereridingtheirhorsesandmovingquicklyyetsoquietlythatIwassurprised.TheysneakedintotheBritishterritoryandattackedthesoldiers.Ihidbehindashedgettingoffmyhorse.IpeekedjustintimetoseeabulletgopastmeandhitaBritishsoldier.Britishsoldierswereastonishedandhadnoideawhatwasgoingon.Gunshotswereeverywhereandpeoplewerescreamingandshouting.IsawaBritishsoldieraiminghismusketatmeandquicklyranbehindtheshed.IquicklygotonmyhorseandrodebackthewayIcame.AssoonasIarrivedbacktomyfamilyItoldthemaboutthebattle,whichtheytoldeveryoneelse.Afteraboutanhourorso,oneoftheminutemencametoourtownandtoldusthattheBritishhavelostandthecolonistshavewonthiswar.Myfamilywashappyaboutthiswhichmademeangry.Iwasshockedtoseemyfather,whoconvincedmetobecomealoyalisthavebecomeapatriot.Myfather,MarkHill,wasafamouscarpenterwhousedtobealoyalist.HetoldmethattheBritishwerelosingandthatbeingaloyalisthadnomeaningnow.Hesaid,“Itsover,thecolonistsaregoingtogetwhattheywant”.

InFebruary6th,1778,theFrenchhaveformedanalliancewiththeUnitedStates.IheardthisfromJose,aFrenchsoldierwhoIhaveknownforyears.AccordingtoJose,theFrenchwasgoinghelptheUnitedStateswhentheyattacktheBritish.Iaskedhimwhenwasthiseventgoingtotakehim,whichherepliedsayinghecannottellmebecauseitissecretinformation.Heassuredmethattheattackwouldhappensoonwhichgotmeworriedthinkingaboutthelastwarthathappened,thebattleofCamden.WhenthebattleofCamdenhappened,althoughIwasloyaltotheBritish,IwasworriedthattheBritishwilltakecolonistsashostage.TheBritishwonthebattleofCamdeneventhoughtheywereoutnumbered.IvisitedKershawcountryinCamdentobuythelocalbreadinAugust16,1780,whenthewindowsoftheshopshatteredandbreadstartedtoflyeverywhere.IcrouchedandheardtheowneroftheBreadhouseshout,”stupidredcoats!”.Hethengrabbedabluecoat,whichwaswhatthecolonistsworeduringbattlesandwentoutside.Ifollowedhim,desperatetogotoasafeplaceorexplaintotheBritishthatIamaloyalist.Oneofthehorsesthatcamerunningknockedtheownerdownsettinghimunconscious.Ipulledbehindawalltopreventhimfromgettingkilledandgotonthehorse.IwasgoingsofastthatIhadtoholdstrongonthesaddleswhentworedcoatsoldiersstoppedme.TheywereaimingtheirgunssoIquicklysaid,“Iamaloyalist,pleasedonotshoot”.Theyasked,”Whereareyougoingto?”.IknewthatmostoftheloyalistswerelivingatFloridasoIsaid,“IamreturningtoFlorida,wheremyfamilywho

arealsoloyalists,arestayingat.Theygavemealookofdoubt,whichIexpectedsinceIhadagunonmyholsterandalsowaswearingabluecoat.Oneofthemsaid,“Youfollowme,thereisabattlegoingonandyoushouldfollowmeifyouwanttolive”.SoIfollowedhimthroughthenarrowandwidepathsofCamden.Fortunately,thesoldierknewhiswayandIwasabletoarriveinFloridawithoutanyharmdone.SincethehorsewastiredandIhadnofood,Idecidedtostayatsomeone’shousebyofferingthemthemoneyandweaponIhad.Thenextday,Iheardthatthepatriotshavelostthebattle. Afterallthebattlesandsuchviolence,theBritishhavefinallylefttheUSin1783.ThecolonistshaveofferedthemthetreatyofParis,whichtheBritishandtheUnitedStatesbothsigned.Icannotbelievethecolonists,thepatriotsmadetheBritishleavewhentheyhavegivenusprotectionandgoodlifestyle.TodaywasacoldDecember5th;peoplewerepreparingwoodandfoodtokeepintheirhouseduringwinter.
