A wide selection of Master's degrees to pair with the MBA

Thirteen University departments have committed to linking their Master's degrees with the MBA as part of the 1+1 MBA so far, with more degrees being added to the list each year.

Tackling world-scale issues

Throughout your time in Oxford, you will be given many opportunities to attend thought-provoking events and to participate in debates at the Oxford Union which relate to the diverse themes explored in your chosen Master and your MBA. Oxford Saïd alone hosts on average over 300 events every year.

The Oxford Saïd MBA is built around three cross-cutting themes that relate to the world-scale challenges shaping today’s business environment: Global Rules of the Game, Entrepreneurship and Responsible Business. You will focus on these themes in three taught integrative modules, but you will also see how they resonate within other parts of the programme, and indeed with guest speakers, non-programme events and student-run conferences and competitions.

Joining a unique institution

The Oxford 1+1 MBA is a once in a lifetime experience. Students spend two years within the University of Oxford, the oldest University in the English-speaking world. As a collegiate university, its departments and colleges each have different roles to play in student life. Your membership to one of its 44 colleges and halls may become the heart of your Oxford experience. Focused on student welfare, they provide the opportunity to meet students with different backgrounds studying other subjects and to be part of clubs and associations outside the department administering your degrees. You will spend two years interacting with a large, internationally renowned and interdisciplinary community, and upon completion of your course, you will be part of a Global Alumni Network.

An interdisciplinary approach

The University curricula draw upon cutting edge research and knowledge from various disciplines. The Oxford 1+1 MBA programme naturally promotes an interdisciplinary approach by enabling students to combine the depth of their chosen Master’s degree with the breadth of the MBA.

Students will also find a diversity of subjects within each programme. During the MBA in your second year, we introduce approaches to thinking about the human condition, leadership and the broader business environment from a range of perspectives, drawing from philosophy, literature, politics, law, sociology, computer science and more.

Global Opportunities and Threats Oxford (GOTO) is also an inherently interdisciplinary endeavour, providing its audience with expert perspectives on world-scale challenges such as big data, demographic change and water scarcity.

A world-class education

University departments define the content of the courses, organise lectures and events and provide facilities and services needed for the student education. All students also have access to the Bodleian Libraries, the largest university library system in the United Kingdom which includes the Sainsbury Library – Oxford Saïd's own dedicated resource.

Oxford 1+1 MBA students are uniquely placed to reap the benefits of belonging to two different departments. Faculty known as world experts in their fields will not only teach you but also collaborate with you. Their first-hand experience and knowledge creates a dynamic learning environment, notably in the MBA classroom, often spilling over into lively debates and discussions outside of class. The exchange of ideas and knowledge make the experience at Oxford truly transformative.

A transformative experienceOne of the most striking things about the world today is how interconnected it is. Business, politics, technological change and society do not exist in isolation but are perpetually influencing each other. We have sought to reflect this in the Oxford 1+1 MBA by integrating a range of different skills, ideas and approaches, and by inviting students to explore different subjects.

We think that the power of studying business inside a university as amazing as Oxford will produce tremendous results. Not only will we become better business people, but also collectively we can help change the world.”

Year 2

Broaden your skills with the Oxford Saïd MBA

Year 1

Deepen your knowledge with an Oxford Master’s degree

Oxford Master’s degrees typically require students to undertake one year of study. The exact composition of the degree will vary according to the course but will often comprise a range of core and optional modules, supported by teaching in the form of lectures and seminars. Assessment is by a combination of course assignments

(in many cases including a dissertation of around 10,000–15,000 words) and written examinations.

Your first year schedule will vary according to the Master’s degree you will have chosen. Please refer to the relevant University department for further information.

9www.sbs.oxford.edu/1plus1 8 university of oxford 1+1 MbA 2017–19

The Oxford Saïd MBA is a top-ranked one-year programme mixing stimulating lectures, energetic seminars, intensive small group work and team project work. A key aim of the programme is to develop your ability to think logically, laterally and independently. Please refer to the schedule below for an overview of the programme and to the next pages for further content details.

Before embarking on your MBA you can prepare by logging into the private, pre-arrival area of our website. This contains an introduction to the School, reading lists, workbooks and study suggestions. There are also self-evaluation questionnaires to help you assess your current level in some of the technical subjects; when term begins you may opt for a support course or advanced level study in some areas.

Core knowledge and integrative modulesMBA programme outline

Core modulesEight core modules in fundamental business areas will provide you with a secure foundation and the knowledge to be able to approach any business situation with confidence and understanding.

• Business Finance• Analytics• Accounting• Strategy• Firms and Markets• Leadership Fundamentals• Technology and Operations Management• Marketing

We are increasingly using common case studies across our core courses. Most business situations and decisions entail some elements of trading-off between the interests of different parts of the organisation, so taking an interdisciplinary approach to case analysis will become particularly useful in situations you are likely to experience after graduation.

Case learning on the Oxford Saïd MBA is enhanced by class-based participation assessment, which gives students an opportunity to work closely with faculty to hone the ability to effectively communicate and influence debates and decision making situations.

Support coursesSupport courses are run during Michaelmas and Hilary terms to provide extra assistance, if you need it, in Business Finance, Firms and Markets, Accounting and Analytics. They are led either by the lecturer or by a post-doctoral fellow.

Global Opportunities and Threats, Oxford (GOTO)You will join Oxford academics, Executive MBA students and alumni in this action-oriented community focused on developing solutions to major global problems. GOTO’s central feature is a dynamic multimedia platform hosting videos from experts and practitioners, infographics, images, and curated content relating to two major topics each year. Working in groups, and guided by your tutor, you will be expected to generate, critique, and defend ideas and action plans.

Integrative modulesThe Oxford Saïd MBA’s major cross-cutting themes are explored explicitly in three integrative modules during the University terms.

Global Rules of the Game This theme is about the unwritten rules, the norms and the laws that shape the global economy. You will examine international institutions and agreements as well as differences and disputes between countries that can influence business opportunities.

You will focus on topics such as trade and tax laws, intellectual property laws, anti-corruption agreements and national laws, and trade agreements. Through exploring this theme, you will gain insights into institutions that are essential for the development of entrepreneurial ventures and for creating solutions to world-scale challenges such as those considered in GOTO.

Entrepreneurship Entrepreneurship is not just about launching a start-up business; it has a role as a distinctive business approach. Broadly speaking, entrepreneurs find and put together resources (ideas, people, things) in new ways to solve complex problems and to create new opportunities. This means that you can have entrepreneurs within organisations as well as those who create organisations. Entrepreneurship is by its nature collaborative and depends on being able to make unusual and innovative connections.

Responsible Business The Responsible Business module will look at two broad areas: the design and purpose of the corporation itself, and the ethical decision-making of business leaders.

Students will be required to think critically about the role of the corporation in society, including its relationships with stakeholders and its responsibilities towards them and to society at large. The discussion will build on topics that students are exploring in other parts of the programme (in GOTO, and the Accounting and Strategy courses, for example) such as the implications of the current challenges of modern capitalism, corporate responsibility and the motivations of social entrepreneurs. You will explore the issues through a variety of mechanisms such as participating in simulations and discovering the impacts of different decisions, through making and discussing presentations, and through developing a business plan or feasibility study.

The module also focuses on the individual, on the nature of ethical dilemmas and decision-making, and on how business leaders can recognise and respond to issues with a moral dimension. This builds on the leadership skills that students develop throughout the programme, particularly in the Leadership Fundamentals course and potentially during the executive coaching component of the programme.

As a 1+1 student, I have full access to the business school infrastructure, its resources and

the community. [...] Walking around the business school, I have never

felt like an outsider. [...] I take this as a successful marker of the 1+1 programme, where students

are seamlessly integrated into the business school community

from the very first year. With my MSc coming to a close soon, I am excited to start my ‘second’ MBA

in September."

and co-curricular activitiesElectives, projects MBA programme outline

ElectivesYou will take a total of seven to nine electives in Hilary, Trinity and summer terms, choosing from a menu of typically 30 to 40 courses on a range of topics. These are often taught by academics and practitioners in partnership, so that you can see how research is applied effectively in the workplace. Increasingly we are introducing electives that have been developed jointly with other University departments. Please check our website for the most recent list of elective courses.

Entrepreneurship ProjectThe Entrepreneurship Project is taught and assessed in conjunction with the integrative module on entrepreneurship. Working in a group you will develop a full business plan and “pitch” it to a panel of invited venture capitalists and other practitioners. The Entrepreneurship Project is supported by a range of activities run by the Entrepreneurship Centre and the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship.

Summer ProjectIn the summer term, you can opt to undertake a team Strategic Consulting Project, working for six weeks with a corporate sponsor and faculty supervisor. These projects take place all over the world and for all kinds of organisations, including companies, charities, non-profits and start-ups. Another option is for students who have demonstrated advanced work on their entrepreneurship projects to develop a specific project proposal to further these initiatives.

You may also take up an internship during the summer. You’ll then be expected to produce a report reflecting on your internship experience and presenting a strategic view of how your sponsoring organisation could transform the way it works.

Selected co-curricular activitiesThe Oxford Saïd Finance Lab The Oxford Saïd Finance Lab is a unique offering for Oxford Saïd MBA, MSc Financial Economics and MSc Law and Finance students wishing to pursue a career in financial services. It is a collaboration between our expert finance faculty, Private Equity Institute and the Career Development Centre that helps students put into practice the financial modelling and valuation skills required for entry and success in investment roles. It is designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

Finance Lab is designed for those interested in M&A, Leverage Finance, Project & Infrastructure Finance, Distress & Restructuring, Valuation, Equity Research, Capital Markets, Asset Management, Private Equity (Growth Capital, LBO, Distress, Infrastructure).

The Oxford Saïd Finance Lab comprises approximately 100 hours of intensive training with three essential components:

• Teaching (modelling)• Case Studies and networking with banks and funds• Challenges with a minimum of one of the following:

Bridgepoint (Private Equity), Centreview (M&A), Hermes GPE (Investment Management) and Rothschild (Financial Advisory).

Venture Idea Exploration Workshop (VIEW) VIEW is a new start-up workshop run by the Entrepreneurship Centre at the School. The workshop has been developed and is run by a team of start-up experts and University professors. The objective of the programme is to provide hands-on learning, allow students to explore their entrepreneurial ideas, and accelerate the start-up process. The programme consists of five sessions where participants are given instructions, tools, guidance, and are expected to set and reach milestones. Each venture team is part of a small cohort of fellow teams that are led by a coaching team. In addition, each team is paired with a mentor to help guide and accelerate the progress of their start-up.

The Oxford Saïd Consulting Careers Programme The Oxford Saïd Consulting Careers Programme, in its inaugural year in 2016/17, is designed to provide students with skills and insight relevant to the Consulting industry and is based around the hiring processes of consulting employers globally. It connects theory with practice through a series of practical workshops, employer-led case studies and access to online resources and tools. The programme links to consulting recruiter events and networking sessions that provide opportunities to connect with practising consultants from a variety of firms.

The programme starts with summer pre-arrival preparation, and continues with regular weekly workshops run in-house, with external speakers, and employer events, through Michaelmas Term until the middle of Hilary Term.

At Oxford, you are interacting everyday with people who move and shake the world. When you are with them, you are in that category also… once you realise that, you realise that any idea you have, and any approach you take, can be utilised to create social change that is real and impactful.”
