UIC SPRING PROGRAMME The seminar yesterday about Climate Simulation which has been changed dramatically by the

computers was presented very well by Associate Professor Matthias Heymann Who could explain

many details about the sophisticated computer models developed over the years that now secure

reliable data on a long range also Providing the long term projections of climate which can make us

commoners worry about the future Much information really would have required the data Matthias

Heymann presented But some sort of misunderstanding has led to the situation where I cannot refer

any the data ndash and as I must admit I took no notes relying the materials would be there to extract

from What can be said is that many comments was brought up as well as questions in a thorough

pleasant atmosphere I hope I can share more with you later for now Thank you so much for

IAS ldquoGETTING STARTEDrdquo IS FRIDAY 6 FEBRUARY FROM 845 AM ndash SIGN UP Getting Started in Denmark is an event organized by International Academic Staff Services (IAS) that offers orientation and registration for newly arrived internationals This is an event for newly arrived PhD students researchers and their spouses The event is held the first and

UIC SEMINAR WEDNESDAY 18 FEBRUARY FROM 10 AM TO 12 NOON DOES DEVELOPMENT AID GIVE DEVELOPMENT BY PROFESSOR MARTIN

PALDAM AU BSS All are invited to this lecture which will focus on the aims and results of development aid - and whether these are the are the right ones Development aid started in the 1960s and today it amounts to app $ 150000 mil This is about 03 of the GDP of the rich donor countries but it is about 7 of the GDP of the poor recipient countries The stated purpose from the beginning was that it should help poor countries develop but it is remarkably difficult to show that it actually does Therefore a large discussion regarding the usefulness of development aid has taken place and the goals of the aid have also widened And here Denmark proves to be an illustrative example This country gives aid to improve the climate of poor countries and it has also given about a billion DKK to promote democracy in the Arab world However most economists still think that the original purpose is the key one More than 200 papers have tried to show that aid does promote development Professor Martin Paldam from the Department of Economics and Business at Aarhus University has surveyed the literature and will talk about his findings at this UIC event Location Room 1 1650 DTM Building AU Campus Hoslashegh-Guldbergs Gade 4 8000 Aarhus C (take entrance to Dalersquos Cafeacute ndash inside the building walk to the right and downstairs)

AFFECTING TRAIN SCHEDULE ESPECIALLY OVER EASTER

AND DURING THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS The Danish Railway Company DSB plans a huge overhaul of the Danish track system Mainly during Easter and the Summer vacation extensive cut backs have to be dealt with On the distances involved the DSB is preparing to substitute with ldquotrain-busesrdquo and thereby hopefully avoid major delays and

other inconveniencies When it comes to Easter first part of the track project starts 1 April 10 pm and ends 6 April 10 am Expect longer travel time and limited room for prams and wheelchairs Book seats ahead of time And train buses take no bikes reservations become a necessity and it is suggested if possible to travel before and after the holidays These trains are before and after Easter are offered at as low rates as ddk99 one way when crossing the Big Belt Storebaeliglt These dates extra cheap tickets are 30 31 March and 7 April

VALENTINES DAY IS 14 FEBRUARY Saint Valentines Day commonly just Valentines Day is an annual commemoration held 14 February celebrating love and affection between intimate companions The day is named after one or more early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine and was introduced by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD It was deleted from the General Roman Calendar of saints in 1969 by Pope Paul VI - Traditionally a day for lovers to express their love for each other by presenting flowers offering confectionery andor by sending greeting cards (known as valentines) The day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages when the tradition of courtly love flourished Today Valentines Day symbols include the heart-shaped outline doves and the figure of the winged Cupid Since the 19th century handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards Valentinersquos Day is not an old Danish tradition has been introduced here during the last one to two decades Still a majority of Danes consider it a day mainly of interest to business to increase their turnover ndash But now it is here why not make the most of it Not necessarily involving a lot of money That can be too cheap But spend some good time together Not least if you happen to be a person who rarely gets around to show affection or appreciation then take it as a convenient day to do something The ads with special buys are not easy to overlook so here is your chance to follow the suggestions of how to say thank you Click the underlined passages and more information in English is available

Winter Holiday Week 7 is a wonderful time ndash children are out of school museums but also shopping malls and the like burst with great activities to entertain families not least ndash For those who are not travelling away from Aarhus take advantage of some of the fun It should be said that the week of Winter Holiday is not religious but when mentioning falls on Shrovetide it surely is a religious time marked to announce the beginning of the 40 days eventually

leading to Easter the big Christian Church Holy Week which this year falls in week 13 It starts with Palm Sunday 24 March and ends with 2nd Easter Day 1 April ndash It is a bit confusing to understand the mix of celebrations for we are midway through winter worth to celebrate The Danish society also from back in time celebrated very much indeed the beginning of shrovetide Fastelavn by making parties fancy-dress parties All to take place before the quiet time up to Easter had to be observed ndash You will find different parties organized and offered for free at so different places as from gas stations ndash to community houses ndash to parties taking place at churches right after church services At the churches you are also invited to come dressed up and ready for the ldquokick the cat off the barrelrdquo ndash some in the Calendar below This is quite interesting and now left for you to choose among

But let it also be mentioned that Ash Wednesday special services are offered in the Danish Folkekirke the State Church like at Our Ladyrsquos Church Vor Frue Kirke Vestergade 8000 Aarhus C Ash Wednesday 11 February at 430 pm a small service takes place during which the altar will be closed and remain so until Easter Starts the scrovetime Fastetiden

This kind of event also takes place in the cathedral Besides you can actually find a copy of the altar at the far end where you can have a hands-on try of closing and opening the altar on your own Besides seeing the events Shrovetide Fastelavn Today only a few in Denmark practice it Heard of some not drinking or not watching TV during the forty days to have more time to reflect It sharpens onersquos eye on our timersquos excess of foods things and the like some claim

DANISH SPRING SEMESTER IS FULL OF HOLIDAYS A list of the coming spring holidays vacations - and a little about how Danes plan them - When it comes to holidays and vacations in general Denmark is a quite good place to work Compared to many other countries we have not been giving up on any of the holidays since the Reform in 1770 even though it is discussed from time to time A great many of them are religious which does not appeal to most Danes But the idea of having fewer days off is what makes most people insist on the holidays as they are - In the beginning it might be a bit puzzling for a newcomer to prepare oneself for the different occasions and also to understand the underlying reason(s) for a particular long weekend If you read this newsletter regularly the intention for years have been to give you a least some understanding of that part of the Danish culture This leads to the fact that winter vacation week 7 was explained in February and now we will soon be in for the next How do Danes handle these chances of lsquobreaksrsquo from the daily routines ndash and how does business deal with all these interruptions in their production programmes ndash Well Danes plan it well Employees act in due time to make their holiday and vacation plans amp wishes be heard so that most possible of ldquotheir dreamsrdquo can come true It means when a holiday falls on a Thursday it can by taking Friday off be turned into an extended weekend Or like around Easter the three days leading up to Maunday Thursday (2 April) could this year end up giving you a vacation in total of 10 days off from work A time which allows you to do some travelling in DK or abroad for example Some of the Holiday rules Danes with a fulltime job have the right to 25 days of vacation during a year whereof three weeks have to be held between May and September If you choose to take three weeks during the public school summer vacation there will still be 10 days to play around with In some contracts the right to at 6th week of vacation is agreed upon but this depends solely on onersquos individual contract Also employees at AU are now entitled to 2 paid childcare days per year up to and including the calendar year in which the child turns 7 years of age (ie in the childrsquos first 8 years of life
