Smart.Green.Connected.The University Circle Innovation Zone will be:

• A 10 square mile smart grid of sensors leveraging 2000 existing wireless access points and more than 30,000 fiber ports for research, innovation, and education.

• Supporting and expanding fiber to the premise to 1000 organizations and University Circle neighbors for direct delivery of healthcare and measurable increase in education engagement and attainment.

• Generate demand for 2Megawatts of Green Power in University Circle.

• Enable $100m in research and development in smartgrid technologies, startups, and research activities

• Partnering with healthcare and technology providers on new home healthcare delivery to increase timely diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and personalized health strategies for type 2 diabetes

• Create 200 new jobs across education, healthcare, IT, and community capacity building resources over the 24 months.

Value Proposition: Delivering Community Priorities

• Building on the largest and among the most successful community fiber optical networks in the country (OneCommunity) connecting nearly 1500 institutional premises and almost one million institutional users across 22 counties in Northeast Ohio;

• Leveraging the commitments of no fewer than four major health care research and clinical systems (Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, Metro, VA);

• Working with award-winning County and City Library systems;

• Commitment of Northeast Ohio’s major research university and partnerships with multiple sensor engineering ventures

University Circle Innovation Zone: Fiber to the Premise Expansion

• Today Case Western Reserve University and our partners, OneCommunity have more than 3000 miles of fiber optics deployed in Greater University Circle to more than 30,000 drops. This is one of largest of leverageable deployments of advanced optical infrastructure in the country,

• We are proposing extending the extension of our fiber to the premise (FttX) to 1000 additional university circle partner institutions and pilot activity with four neighborhoods immediately contiguous to the campus backbone.

• While there are numerous FttX project in greenfield and rural scenarios, we believe the University Circle Innovation Zone is the largest such effort among the mature cities in the United States.

Fiber to the Premise Program• The expansion of the University Circle

fiber to the premise plant to 1000 homes, multi-dwelling units, and non-profit organizations will focus on three core service lines:

– Community and neighborhood health care delivery program targeting Type Two Diabetes (early identification, education, intervention and reduction of incidence).

– High School success program targeting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math from school to community and home (engagement, time on task, self-reported learning, objective learning outcomes)

– Data, voice, video service options focused on new and emerging technologies and services connecting the community to Case Western Reserve University.

SmartGrid InitiativeMore than 3000 sensors across Greater University Circle supporting research along with smart and greener homes and offices, utility monitoring, environmental and habitat monitoring, healthcare monitoring of patients, weather monitoring and forecasting, public safety, tracking of goods and manufacturing processes, safety monitoring of physical structures and construction sites.

Green and Blue: Provisioning Fiber and Alternative Energy Together

• Drive demand for green power in partnership with Cleveland Public Power and First Energy. Target goal is 2 MegaWatts of new alternative energy consumption in the first 12 months.

• Organizations and households connected to the University Circle Fiber to the Premise infrastructure will be encouraged to subscribe to ‘green’ power through their utility bill.

• Each building and household in Greater Cleveland Circle will be connected to the smart-grid enabling monitoring.

• Goals for reducing institutional carbon footprint among institutional partners

• Incentives for home-based work and home-based company formation to support reduced carbon foot print.

• Possible tax credits for organizations and households investing in fiber and alternative energy.
