IMPACTFUL IMAGES

SOUTH SIDE – TRAMPOLINE MAN BY JON LOWENSTEIN

Topic: Photojournalism Shot Type: Mid-shot Event: The image features a young man jumping on a trampoline face first at a block party, with his friends watching him amused. Why Chosen: I chose this because it in some ways relates to me. Whenever on a trampoline the jumper tends to be in a good mood, or at least I am. I can visibly see that being so high up and the expression on his friends face that they are enjoying themselves. Also this image was part of a series that won the photographer Jon Lowenstein $10,000 Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize for his powerful, in-depth look at life in Chicago’s much-maligned South Side.

REMAINS OF MALAYSIAN AIRLINES PLANE MH17

Photographer: Jerome Sessini Topic: Photojournalism Shot Type: Long-shot Event: 4 soldiers are looking hopelessly at the remains of the crashed Malaysian Airliner. Why Chosen: Because it makes a real statement on mans capability and feelings towards events. The expression on the men’s face cannot be seen but due to their individual stances, you can almost paint a picture as to what they would be looking like. It shows how hopeless man can feel in a crisis.

THE FALLING MAN Photographer: Richard Drew Topic: Photojournalism Shot Type: Long-shot/ Portrait Event: A victim of the September 11th attacks falling out of the WTC building. Why Chosen: I’ve seen this image before and am always captivated by its simplicity and meaning. There’s no blood, guts or explosions, just a man falling. Yet it really paints the picture of the horror of that day. The man featured represents the everyman and the fact that anything horrific can happen to you, no matter how normal you are.

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SUICIDE

Photographer: Robert WilesTopic: Photojournalism Shot Type: Mid-shot Event: The image features a dead woman lying strangely positioned on a crushed limousine after committing suicide. Why Chosen: Because it shows a woman who had no other choice but to end her life, and how she in some way retained dignity by strangely landing in such perfect form. If you put her body on a sofa for example you wouldn’t think twice to say she was simply relaxing.

BLOODY BUTCHER

Photographer: Unknown Topic: Sport Shot Type: Close-up Event: The image features England international Terry Butcher viciously bleeding from the head, discolouring his shirt almost completely. Why Chosen: Because it shows the complete determination and fearless nature of a sportsman driven by success and not his injuries. If anybody says football is played by cowards and weak men, show them the Terry Butcher photograph.
