PASSIVE SENTENCES

The queen ate a jam sandwich

Can you tell me what is the subject in this sentence?

The queen ate a jam sandwich.

The queen is the subject of this sentence.

This is an active sentence. The subject-the queen ate a sandwich yesterday! The most important thing in this sentence is who ate the sandwich

People buy books in this wonderful shopMy mother painted her room last monthHe will wash the car one day I took the pictures with my camera

But we could change the sentence around.

The queen ate a jam sandwichWe could change the sense of the sentence by saying...

The jam sandwich was eaten by the queen.

Which is the subject in this sentence?

The jam sandwich was being eaten by the queen.

This is a passive sentence. The subject-the jam sandwich- is ‘suffering’ with the action of the verb. It is not who makes the action . It is being eaten!

• Perhaps this seems complicated!– But it is not, you hear passive sentences all the time

– Mark was eating an apple – The picture was painted by Tom

Are these sentences active or passive?

That’s right! This sentence is active. Mark is actively eating the apple.The subject of the sentence is the

picture. The picture is having something done to it.

Active Voice

Active voice is used to show that the subject of the sentence is performing or causing the action.

Example:Lebron threw the basketball before the buzzer. Lebron shot the basketball from the free throw line.Lebron scored three points.

Summing up

Passive Voice

Passive voice is used when the subject is the recipient of the action.

Example:The ball was thrown by Lebron.The basket was shot by Lebron.The score was made by Lebron.

Form of Passive Voice Verbs

The passive voice requires a "double verb" and will always consist of a form of the verb "to be" and the past participle (usually the "en/ed/t" form) of another verb.

Example:Active: John baked the bread.Passive: The bread was baked by John. (Was is a form of the verb “be”.)
