7.1 EXPONENTS• Sometimes it is necessary to multiply a number by itself one

or more times. For example, a math problem may require multiplying 3 x 3 or 5 x 5 x 5 x 5. In these situations, instead of writing 3 x 3, you can write 3², or instead of writing 5 x 5 x 5 x 5, 5⁴ means the same thing. The first number is the base. The small, raised number is called the exponent or power. The exponent tells how many times the base should be multiplied by itself.
