lighting This is a photograph I took of a dried up lake I found in a national park, as you can see the sunlight itʼs the surface of the lake but does not reach through the cracks, creating a very contrasting and eye drawing photograph. To increase this effect I made the image black and white and also adjusted the contrast levels.

focus In this photograph you can see that parts of the image (the foreground) is out of focus. This was due to the shutter speed not being fast enough to capture a sharp image, instead giving the photo a blurred look. I like this image as the lack of focus gives it a faced paced, racy feel, which I believe which compliments the brief of gaining pictures for a travel site.

composition Photograph 1.

In this photograph I am making use of leading lines, that is, the composition of the shot uses a mouth of a river at the bottom of the image as a starting point, for the river to lead people into the photo and observe the rest of the image. The small curves in the river lead the eye first from the children playing , down towards a ʻtuk tukʼ in the water and washing being laid out to dry in the sun.

I am also making use of a high up view point, which I was able to achieve by passing by the scene on a train. This vantage point enables us to view the scene in full, you are not immersed in it, simply observing.

Photograph 2.

In this photograph I made particular use of viewpoints. In this image I am using a

ʻworms eye viewʼTo capture a bat in full flight. This man on

the ground viewpoint was taken out of necessity however I feel it gives the image a sense of fear, as if the viewer were prey.

Page 18: Unit 16 - Photography

Process

For this photo one of the things I was raise the brightness in order to bring out all the lights.

AO3 - BEFORE Kids

Page 21: Unit 16 - Photography

Process

I cropped the image a fair amount to provide a more equal image with the children in the centre. I also raised the brightness and the contrast.

AO4 - Strengths & WeaknessesSTRENGTHS- Looks very vibrant and alive, a good representation of this part of Sri Lanka at night.- The reflection of the lights in the water looks really nice, it also seems to bleed out of the photograph as you are unable to distinguish the border.- I like that along side the lights of the beach strip, the light of the moon has also been captured through the clouds, which I think is a contrast that makes this an interesting photograph.

WEAKNESSES - I fear that the final photo may have been edited too much, in some areas you can see that the photo looks noisy and has started to break up.- Some of the lights in the photo are too bright, making the photo look messy.

Page 29: Unit 16 - Photography

AO4 - Strengths & WeaknessesSTRENGTHS- Rule of thirds is in place, created a compelling image.- I like this one as I have managed to capture these children in different stances and stages of motion, this along with the almost symmetrically of the image creates and interesting photo.- The lighter, blanker field of grass is contrast to the five children and helps them stand out as subjects.

WEAKNESSES- the bottom third of the image is very boring, perhaps I could have cropped the original even more.- The bottom third seems uncomfortably bright and is distracting.

Page 30: Unit 16 - Photography

AO4 - Strengths & WeaknessesSTRENGTHS- Has depth, there is something to focus on in the foreground and background, creating an interesting image.- Nice contrasts of the dark and light, the dense forest and the cloud.- Lingering cloud makes the trees and greens look jurassic and exotic.

WEAKNESSES- There is too much plain white in the image, which I feel makes the photo lose its ‘grand’ look.- Photo could have more depth- White is too dominant, makes the image boring.

Page 31: Unit 16 - Photography

AO4 - Strengths & Weaknesses

STRENGTHS- Image is vibrant due to the combination of interesting components (running water, moving people, colour, objects is strange places)- use of leading lines draws the viewers eye into the image, compelling.

WEAKNESS- A lot of similar green bush in the image- repetitive and boring.

- Could have been cropped further diagonally to increase focus.

AO4 Professional Comparison

All these photos that I have taken from the Lonely Planet website on their Sri Lanka page. What is instantly apparent is that the focus directly on certain sites and locations of note, whereas my photos focus, in general on the natural beauty of Sri Lanka.

“Tea Plants” by Fabien Fivaz which can be found on the Lonely Planet website also captures the tea plantations. His photo is very bright and sunny, trying to portray the ideal scenic view for tourists. Whereas my photo seems much more dark and more brooding due to the thick cloud looming in, compared to Fivaz clear blue sky. Both our pictures are still fit for purpose as albeit mine is somewhat less ‘sunny’ it still a shot of an astonishing view that tourists will come to see.
