Women’s Liberation Movement

During the 1960s gains achieved by the Civil Rights movement spread to women

-Led to the emergence of the Women’s Liberation (Feminist) Movement

-wanted social and economic equality -objected to the traditional roles of women-wanted equal access to careers and equal pay to men

Woman’s Liberation Movement

Women’s movement is led by Betty Friedan who wrote Feminine Mystique (1963)

-She challenged the stereotype of middle-class suburban housewives and wanted them to compete for the same jobs as men

-She formed the National Organization of Women (NOW), which became the lead voice for the women’s movement

-more women into college attending and working-Equal Pay Act-required equal pay for men and

women doing the same job

Title IX (1972)--promoted gender equality in high school and college education, greatly expanded the numbers and opportunities for women

-End of Sexist language (Ms. Replaces Mrs./Miss)-Roe v Wade (1973)-- Supreme Court outlaws state

regulation of abortion, women have the right to privacy and the right to choose.
