◆ Explain to children that people who write stories use words to express their ideas and describe how characters feel.  Artist also have ways of creating artworks that express ideas and feeling.

 EXPLORE:

➔ Show students the Whistler and the Rivera.  ◆ Ask them to discuss how Whistler used a mostly black and white

palette, while Rivera used a wide range of colors. (W.K.2, SL.K.5)

➔ Display the works by Matisse and Picasso. Ask the students what color dominates each work.

◆ Ask the students why they think Picasso chose blue and Matisse chose red?

◆  Ask how the paintings are the same? (e.g., Both figures are preparing food and neither is looking at us).

◆ How they are different? (e.g. We can see outside in the Matisse, whereas Picasso‘s is a closeup).

CREATE  Students will create fish family with warm or cool colors and create a mood for their picture.

➔ Have the students divide their crayons up into warm and cool colors. ➔ Tell them to choose what group of crayons they would like to choose.

➔ Show the class how to draw a fish. ➔ Once complete have them draw two more for a total of three fish.  This will be their

warm/ cool color fish. ➔ Have the children color their fish with warm or cool colors. ➔ Finally have the kids color the background to create their underwater scene. ➔  Have them set the mood or feeling in their underwater world.   ➔ Have the kids outline the fish in black marker or crayon.
