As we reach the end of this year 2009. A person must have a silent moment alone with him/her self in order

to set things straight for the next year and put some plans for the year of 2010. Revise your mistakes and what led to your failure. Try to remember those you’ve hurt! Dive deep down your consciousness and look at what you have done!!! Now, the past has passsed but the future is ahead of you..

Dear uniQue reader,

life is beautiful as it is. Don’t complicate it but color it with love, hope, health, wealth, friendship, kindness, compassion & passion. May this year end with a huge smile drawn upon your faces.

The sixthDubai international Film FestivalTHE SIXTH Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) was launched

on December 9, with a star-studded screening of Rob Marshall’s musical feature Nine. The festival began in full fervour despite the present debt crisis. The festival, claimed as the largest in the region, opened amidst a severe financial crisis looming over the city.

New releases from established directors and actors including Spain’s Pedro Almodovar, Jim Sheridan, Annette Bening, Samuel Jackson, Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis, Geoffrey Rush, comedian Chris Rock and musician Jack White make their Dubai debuts. Films exploring the history of European cinema, childhood melancholy, social dilemmas and an aviation adventure set in the Sahara Desert are among the eclectic mix of French films on show in the ‘In Focus’ segment.

Indian legend Amitabh Bachchan and singer and actress Mandy Moore have received lifetime achievement awards. Arab stars including Khaled Taja and Nelly Kareem enthralled the red carpet. Ranbir’s kapoor ‘Rocket Singh salesman of the year’ made its world premiere at the festival.

Messi namedFIFA Player of YearLionel Messi added FIFA’s World Player of the Year award to his

growing list of accolades Monday, completing a nearly perfect campaign in which his club won an unprecedented trio of Spanish and European titles.

Messi received the award at a gala ceremony in Zurich, easily outdistancing the last two winners -- Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka

-- along with his Barcelona teammates Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta in voting among national team captains and coaches.

Messi also received the Ballon D’Or as the best player in Europe after FC Barcelona won the Spanish league and cup and the Champions League. He sealed the team’s first Club World Cup on Saturday with an extra-time goal to beat Estudiantes 2-1.

All that’s missing from the 22-year-old Argentine’s resume is a World Cup title.

“It is beautiful to achieve a year that cannot possibly be improved,” Messi said through a translator, calling the FIFA award “the icing on the cake.”

Messi, who was runner-up the last two years, received 1,047 points in voting. Ronaldo was second with 352 points, followed by Xavi with 196 points.

The women’s award went to Marta for the fourth year in a row. The 23-year-old Brazilian playmaker won out over teammate Cristiane, Kelly Smith of England, and German stars Birgit Prinz and Inka Grings.

“I’m really surprised,” Marta said.

Nobody was surprised that Messi won the award, after scoring 38 goals in 51 matches in all competitions during 2008-09 season. He has 15 goals in 22 games already as Barcelona has surged to the top of La Liga and back to the Champions League knockout phase.

His form with Argentina has been less spectacular.

The South American team stumbled into the World Cup after late winners in the final qualifying matches against Peru and Uruguay, with Messi in particular appearing confused and uninspired since Diego Maradona took over as coach last year.

Maradona has labeled Messi his “successor” on the field, and Messi has already surpassed the former great in terms of successes at the club level. But his only international triumph was an Olympic gold medal in 2006, and he will have to play better to lead Argentina to a third World Cup and its first since Maradona inspired victory in 1986.

Asked about his play with Argentina, Messi said he didn’t know why he’s been unable to recapture his club form with his country.

“Argentina had a hard time in the qualifying round,” he said, “but the World Cup is something different. I just hope the team and I can play better.”

The late England player and manager Bobby Robson received FIFA’s fair play award, while the presidential award for contributions to soccer and society went to Jordan’s Queen Rania.

The world governing body also announced its first World XI men’s team, which included six players from the Spanish league and five from the Premier League.

Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas was goalkeeper, with Manchester United’s Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra joining Chelsea’s John Terry and Barcelona’s Dani Alves on defense. Xavi, Iniesta and Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard were picked as midfielders, with Messi, Ronaldo and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres in attack.

The short list of candidates for Player of the Year highlighted the shift in soccer power over the past year to Spain, whose national side is the reigning European champion and whose club sides Barcelona and Real Madrid shared all five finalists for the award.

Ronaldo was the runaway winner in 2008 after a season during which he scored 42 goals and won the European championship with Manchester United. The English side was beaten in this year’s final by Barcelona, and the 24-year-old Portuguese winger moved to Real Madrid in the offseason to join Kaka, the 2007 winner of the FIFA award who transferred from AC Milan.

Ronaldo was honored at the gala for scoring the best goal of the year, a 40-yard shot against Porto in last season’s Champions League. Ronaldo hailed Messi for having played “very well” but credited his rival’s success to Barcelona’s fluid play among teammates.

“Xavi and Iniesta also deserve the award,” Ronaldo said. “If I had to choose, I would say all three of them.”

Xavi and Iniesta have formed the backbone of the world’s best midfield, their silky passing, penetrating runs and sublime distribution of the ball perfectly complimenting Barcelona’s three-pronged attack of Messi, Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

It is a combination that has also been at the heart of Spain’s rise to No. 1 in the world, and has the potential to lead Spain to its first World Cup title in South Africa.

“We have great hopes,” Xavi said. “Let’s see if this is the moment for Spain.”

The FrenchPassion!

Jassem Al-Marzouk

When I was in the 5th grade, I remember that one day my mother bought me a small book which had a beautiful

cover of the Eiffel Tower, called (How to speak French in just seven days!). For unknown reasons, I was happy that I was given this book . So I started to learn how to say the French greetings (like, bonjour, bonsoir, salut ...), and wrote them down on a paper in order to remember them whenever I wanted, whether it was at home or at the school.

I don’t know why I’ve had this passion and why it has captivated me, but I do recall something funny that may cause all that admiration. My mother used to call my younger brother (the American) because he had a white skin and a blond hair (but not anymore! Our Kuwaiti genes and our great, shiny sun have turned his color to something else! ) when he was a kid. So of course I got jealous from that and I demanded her to abandon him or give him to a shelter! I was really crazy jealous from him since the day he was born.

One night, while I was crying alone in my room, holding tightly my big brown tidy bear, and watching some cartons on T.V (Actually, I was watching an episode of the sad story of Sally because I found its atmosphere was very similar to the tough situation I was living ! I’m really missing the old cartoons, don’t you?) My mother came in and gently asked me if I was fine and if something was annoying me, so I hugged her and said (You and my Dad love Abod more than me! Am I right? He’s always with you two in everywhere, even so you let him sleeps in your bedroom and you’re calling him

Page 31: uniQue Magazine - issue 30

the American! Why don’t you just give him back to the store that you bought him from! (What? I was so, so naive? But could you blame me? This little thing was taking over all the attention in the house ! ) I hate him!) .

After I finished talking about my only, big problem (during that , the tears were dropping a lot, exactly just like the first time when my hair was cut by an old Indian hair dresser whose salon was a few meters away from the house . I was crying, kicking strongly the chair I was sitting on and at the end I vomited! That was really a painful experience! ), she kissed me on my right cheek and on my forehead and said by looking directly to my eyes (My French little man ! I love you all equally, but you (Jojo) have a special place in my heart ! You know why? Because you’re my 1st child, my 1st hero, my 1st joy in life! You, look at me French little man, tell me now, are you still angry and sad ?) . It was the 1st time she called me this way and since that day I’ve been curious about this beautiful language which has been attracting me ever since.

So I guess that this nick name , my jealousy from my younger brother , Sally (the cartoon) and that little conversation with

my mother have been all the basic reasons for my French passion . Beside that there are some interesting points about this culture which might make you know a little bit more in this area :

- This language has been considered to be as one of the most beautiful and charming spoken languages in the world . You know that there’s something in common between the Arabic language and the French one which is that every noun has a gender. I mean every single noun has to be a feminine or a masculine one (as you know the nouns have no gender at all in English), and of course you can imagine how this point has a huge effect in the grammar!

- In spite of the obvious separation between the religion and the laws of the republic, there’s one of the biggest Muslim population in Europe . There are more than four millions Muslims in France, who are separated in two groups:

1- French people who convert willingly to Islam.

2- The Muslim immigrants to France (specially from Algeria Morocco , Tunis ... ) .

The Muslims are (like any other non Muslim people) treated respectfully and have the right to express themselves in a way or another inside the French society.

- Because of its special , wonderful places and spots (such as , the Eiffel Tower , the Louvre , the famous French brands , the Champs-Elyse’s which is which is categorized as one of the most charming and beautiful avenues in the whole world , the Rivera ...) France has been always chosen by millions of people from different cultures and races as an ideal place for spending their vacation whether it would be in autumn , spring , summer or winter .

- The size of the French Republic is twice the size of the United Kingdom.

- For a long time ago the French Capital Paris has been known as an international main center of art and the industry of the beauty. The most fancy and famous events and activities which are related to this magical field (art galleries, fashion shows , the releasing of a new books , the theatres , the carnivals ...) are almost held consistently around 365 days .

- France was a main founder of the United Nations and the European Union .

Finally , I just want to say as a conclusion that anyone of us must have a passion about something in life and once you find what that thing that makes you feel happy and fills every part of your soul with joy , stick with it and never let it goes or slips away from your hands ! w

The blue circleof life

Of course you may be wondering what the blue circle of life

is, well the answer to your entrapped misery is coming right

up! I’ll start this article by narrating a short story which is filled with

meanings and fascinations.

Once upon a time there was a large eagle that was proud and

confident, this eagle hovered the skies for hours and hours at a

time and with his huge wings he shot up and down to the luscious

green hills that when seen from the ground had an endless stretch,

which made the place a natural paradise. One evening our eagle felt

the quench of thirst and straight away flew to the nearest well and

perched upon its walls and started drinking away his yearning thirst.

Hastily slurping away the water the eagle couldn>t avoid hearing a

croaking sound coming from the bottom of the well, filled with eager

curiosity the eagle quickly called out, «speak up whoever is down

there.» The eagle waited and waited but there was no reply. So he

decided to pick up a stone and throw it down the well to break this

silence once and for all. After several tries, the frog finally spoke up

and said, «it is me frog I have been living here all my life…you have

awaken me so I tried to scare you away.» Of course the eagle was

confused, how can anyone stay hidden all his life in a dark, damp well

when life on the outside is so joyful and alluring.

As puzzled as the eagle seemed he couldn>t help but ask the frog

why he chose to stay, however the frog confidently replied, that the

world is his well and the sky, the eagle is talking about is limited

to the edges of the well, calling it «the blue circle». «How can you

explain to me hovering the skies around and around then?», the eagle

hastily replied. There was a moment of silence and the frog quickly

retaliated by stating that he would never take the eagles word for

anything and he would stick to his narrow view of the world. With a

slight grin drawn on his face the eagle gracefully spread his wings and

flew away and until this day the eagle sympathized the solace of the

old, stubborn grim frog and prayed for him to see the light.

What do you think, intriguing isn>t it! Well this story slowly reveals a

lavish amount of significant symbolization that is linked to the world

we live in. For centuries people have written plays, novels, stories,

and even directed movies, based on the thought of interpreting

human behavior and actions into a visual sight through the help of

speaking animals. We have all seen this and mostly in the stories that

have descended in cultures generation after generation. it seems

that people find it easier to view their flaws through a reenactment

with animals than with humans involved, I don>t know why but it

looks like that people take it more as an insult if humans were to

portray their flaws. Anyhow, the focal point in the story that I have

presented is the vast amount of people in this world that have a

narrow perspective of the world they live in, it comes to my attention

that these people seem to be the ones that fail to excel in life and

find themselves stuck in a hole neglecting any helping hand to get

out of that hole. Much like our «frog» these people are stubborn and

being overwhelmed with so much pride they find it hard to accept

that the life they are leading is nothing but a lie, a false misguided

way of living. Undoubtedly, there are people who are completely the

opposite and it is quite obvious who these people are, why you may

walk around in a shopping mall for instance and you can hand pick

these people from a crowd of mislead sheep seeking attention in any

way possible.

As a statement for a closure, I would like to encourage everyone

reading this article to thrive at becoming the person they want to

be not what society claims they should be, and try to get out of this

hole, widening their perspective and enhancing the view of the world

around them. As there is nothing as bitter as living a life of duplicity,

saying the opposite of what you want to say and smiling at what

brings you misery. Finally, I would like to quote what the Scottish

innovator Alexander Graham Bell said that, when one door closes

another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully

upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for

us!ww

I mean, like, totally—these words comprise of the average lexicon of today’s adolescent. Maybe I am exaggerating, but I am doing so to

emphasize an important point: the drastic reduction of vocabularies. I am not addressing the issue of using simple words as opposed to flashy Latin derivatives in order to convey meaning. Instead, a reduction in vocabularies refers to the usage of words whose signification is radically loose—so loose in fact that the word can be used in a variety of sentences without distinction. For example, you might hear someone describe a new car, job, baby brother, and a trip abroad as “cute,” but what does that really mean?

Page 35: uniQue Magazine - issue 30

Ideologues might attribute the problem to the adolescents’ immersion in sound-bite tools. For them, the “problem” often appears to be the rapid growth in technology and its simplification of nomenclature and conceptions. For instance, they blame chat programs, social networking platforms and popular culture for conveying recycled notions in simple words. Rather than delineating its causes, I intend to investigate the risk of this diminution and the approach to repair it.

What does it matter how many synonyms one can think of for a certain word? Teenagers consider the abundant reservoir a form of showing off, a type of verbal exhibition. Anything can be “hot,” “cool,” or “cute.” If they understand each other, why should it be anyone else’s business? Adults, on the other hand, deem it a reflection of one’s professionalism. The more words you know, the more sophisticated you can sound. It means you can reflect your intention during a business meeting, relay the proper message in a classroom, or compose a complex strategy during a quiz, a game, or even a war. What I would like to argue is that the issue is of a more crucial caliber. Our understanding of language should not only be linked to contemporary usage (what’s grammatical and what’s not). It should extend to the etymology of the word. Otherwise, if we forget that words have histories, not only our language will be flattened, but so too will our own histories—for how could we participate in the shaping of our history if our thoughts were constituents of our own oppression?

It is important to remind my readers that language is a compound. This means that language is the result of human experience, of historical progress (or regression), of borrowing residues and influences from other languages and lending to others. Because people construct language over time (the words themselves as well as their interpretative value), it means that language can be used to exert, suppress, control or modify power relations.

One need only remember the shift in the days of the week to remember that our understanding of linguistic concepts is alterable even if they fall under “incontestable categories,” such as science, common sense or even religion. Although Kuwait is a “Muslim” country, and although the “Muslim” week begins on a Saturday and ends on a Friday, our current conception of “our still Muslim” week is different as it begins on a Sunday and ends on a Saturday. This change should assist our comprehension of language: the system of words and their meanings is formed by humans according to a particular time, location, and situation.

Hence, expanding one’s vocabulary is essential not simply to reflect one’s inner thoughts or convey meaning but also to raise historical awareness. In other words, you should not only study various nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and so on, but you should also understand why and how particular words (or their definitions and usages) came into the discourse and both question the reason and method of the erasure of others. By forgetting, or avoiding to learn these histories, you become complicit in the crossing out of the past. This generation that witnessed the alteration of the days of week are conscious of the dubious intention behind the change. This change was the result of financial optimization by accommodating banks, not religion. The question is whether later generations will remember this reason or suffer the consequences of oblivion.

Maybe you assume that the example of the days of the week isn’t so drastic. Would you rather I presented a more profound illustration? Wordweb dictionary defines the term “Civilization” in a number of ways: a) A society in an advanced state of social development, b) The social process whereby societies achieve an advanced stage of development and organization, c) A particular society at a particular time and place, and finally, d) The quality of excellence in thought and manners and taste. That is what “civilization” means today. However, from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries, European powers spread over the world subjugating indigenous people and exploiting their resources in the name of “Civilization.” Under the guise of enhancing the thoughts and manners of non-Europeans, Europeans destroyed the thoughts and manners of native populations. The Online Etymology Dictionary explains that the word itself emerged in the eighteenth century as the antithesis of “barbarism”—although its physical procession was the concretization of barbarism itself.

Civilization is not the only word whose history and usage contradicts the textual definition in dictionaries. Some, like “Humanism,” “Peace,” and “Capitalism,” conspicuously lead to global transformations, while others (as seen in the alteration of Saturday’s denotative definition) are more obscure. The problem occurs if we forget or deny this diachronic baggage because then we would lack historical material. Without a multitude of words and their histories, the next time an American representative comes to the Middle East hoping to “bring peace and civilization,” we might just nod our heads and say, “That’s cool.”

The speaker talks as I walk from one end to another. Anger and rage I fight under the levels of flesh and bone. A fire that rises to charge

with its swords and spears to cause scars and never healing wounds. And still I lock it in order to keep another away.

The new marks across my body I do not mind. There had been lots and more will come. Even though my skin had thickened the claws still reach my flesh, and the wounds still reach to uncover my bone. As if those claws were never meant to protect me.

The thoughts of how my fist can harm that filthy body run from one swift move to a harder and painful one. My hand aches to fist and slam. My fingers ache to claw. My fangs ache to grow and dig deep to have an unforgettable taste of the black blood.

The walls, they think they separate me from them. They do, but

they also grow what they know naught of the hate they hate most. Never anger a cub. It will always grow to return a cub no more. Cubs no more forget naught. They are beasts as much as you, only they consider you no beasts like them. You are to be hunted after causing the hunt. They know your trickery and from so know the ways to trick you. Don’t smile just yet for shelter will mean naught.

The thorns you throw to bleed the half cub, half cub no more has made the beast wickeder and wiser. Must it pass the road you’ve grown the thorns across? If it was a must, well, it remembers the spots where the thorns died and will kill more.

The sword you wave every time will once be waved under your own neck. The beast is no angel. And angel holds such a sword never. The more you slam your blade against the darken claws, the sharpen they become. Beware. In a soon time those very claws will have you within the reach. The close reach.

You try to fight a war you have drowned. When the last have been so? Since when were happens arranged? You send your little helpers. They return to you with such wide smiles of glory. Oh, happy you are. I certainly doubt. The glory you wish to reach; to dig your claws and fangs deep in a flesh. A flesh you have chosen to be under your mercy. Something you are wanting to prove its existence.

The pity you show is only the wonder you think of yet another plan for the next to come. The road you wish for happens to go through. But you do not wish, do you? You simply demand and command and it is done with wide smiles of the nature of pleasing the mighty. The crowned mighty.

The tales you tell thoroughly and the statements you speak with such rhythm are like a song to you. A pinch of words which are specifically enjoyed with the deeds they cause. Of they are the deeds you love almost as you love your precious self. Even though you tell that you are a least perfect, that is what you never believe.

The tears I have fought, they wish to escape my weakened eyes no more. I have soothed the fire regardless of the rage myself rightly owns. The beast is seated yet not quite rested. It had turned showing the fake expressions while hiding the true ones to another more worthy day. The day when the memories are no more strong, nor the care. When beasts’ lord gives the very permission and the hand is lifted. The hand the beast always looked for.

The speaker’s voice is fading lower and weaker and yet myself is not satisfied with the panther’s pacing. Patience, the speaker will not voice, walls do not stand and chains do not remain forever. Patience self, patience.

This is not happening!I put on a smile, but I’m crying inside! All of the sudden, I want to go home

Now, I need a long cryNo, No big girls don’t cry

But, for some reason this doesn’t match with meMy eyes seem to be an ongoing tear machine

He said that, cry!She said that, cry!

Oh my, will a day come, when I will cry in front of my Romeo?Pause! Time for “Imagine that”!

Something happens what so ever! Then, my eyes begin to water

Down come the tearsHis sparkling eyes, grow wide open!

Feeling guiltyReaches for my cheeks, brushes my tears away

Oh, Oh I could swear my heart is poundingBut, I’m still feeling selfish!

I want more, more!He then reaches, for my hand

Strokes it slowlyYeh! I’ve got goose bumps!

His lips move, saying something?Yes, he is!

But, my ears no longer work!My body, my head, my brain

CadillacCTS Coupe

Design

CTS Coupe emerged as a proposal inside Cadillac’s design studio, where designers have developed and evolved the brand’s Art and Science design philosophy.

The coupe has the same wheelbase as the CTS, but an overall height that is approximately two inches (51 mm) lower and an overall length that is two inches (51 mm) shorter.

Although it draws from its sport sedan sister, the CTS Coupe shares only the instrument panel, console, headlamps, front fenders and grille. Key design features include:

- Classic hardtop styling, with no conventional B-pillar- Touch-pad operation for the doors removes the need for conventional door handles, creating a technical, clean profile

- A windshield laid at a faster angle (62.3 degrees) and a long, nearly horizontal backglass area combine to create a sleek, aerodynamic lookw

Cadillac today unveiled the 2011 CTS Coupe, the latest and most dramatic of the brand’s series of new designs

to reach production. Slated to arrive in Cadillac showrooms in the spring of 2010, the CTS Coupe is a new luxury sports coupe designed to become the centerpiece of the brand’s revised lineup.

Page 63: uniQue Magazine - issue 30

- Sculpted lower front fascia with unique brake-cooling vents- Diamond cut-style rear fascia with mesh lower grilles- Center-outlet exhaust with twin dihedral-shaped tips that pass through the rear fascia

- Signature vertical lighting, highlighted with LED light pipes- Rear spoiler integrated into the center high-mounted stop lamp- Sculpted roof-mounted antenna for OnStar and XM Satellite Radio.

At first glance, the shape of CTS Coupe is refreshingly simple, yet amplified with intricately carved details. Distinctive and original Cadillac signature cues combine with hand-sculpted forms, artfully articulating the confidence of the chassis. For example, the rear fenders were purposefully developed by hand in Cadillac design studios to visually acknowledge the RWD powertrain. The gestured profile, coupled with Cadillac’s vertical taillamps and pronounced rear centerline, aim to achieve the most visually confident coupe in the segment.

Performance

The CTS Coupe extends Cadillac’s emerging performance credentials. The CTS Coupe’s standard powertrain consists of a direct injected 3.6L V-6 and six-speed manual transmission. Direct injection technology delivers fuel more precisely to increase the efficiency of combustion, enabling more power while maintaining fuel economy and lowering emissions – including a 25-percent drop in cold-start hydrocarbon emissions.

The 3.6L DI engine is rated at 304 horsepower (227 kW) and offers EPA-estimated fuel economy of 27 mpg on the highway. It also runs on less expensive regular unleaded gasoline.

The powertrain’s performance is channeled through a chassis that delivers sports car performance without punishment. The hardware includes an independent short/long arm ( SLA) front suspension system, with hydraulic control arm front bushings; and a multi-link rear suspension mounted on a fully isolated subframe. Also included are four-wheel disc performance brakes, premium steering and limited-slip differential.

Two suspension-tuning levels are available: a Performance Package with 18-inch wheels and all-season tires (available in both RWD and AWD,) and the Summer Tire Performance Package, with 19-inch tires and wheels and a higher level of road holding capability. StabiliTrak, the advanced electronic chassis control system, is standard.

The 304-horsepower (227 kW) 3.6L V-6 Direct Injection engine will be standard, equipped with a six-speed manual, featuring a revised clutch and dual-mass flywheel that offers better clutch pedal feel and improved engine isolation. A 6-speed automatic transmission with Driver Shift Control (and available steering wheel mounted shift buttons) is optional.

Technology

CTS Coupe blends handcrafted luxury with a contemporary, driver-focused interior that supports the car’s high-performance capabilities. The interior includes hand-sewn accents covering the door, center storage console and instrument panel trim. 14-Way adjustable Recaro

sport seats, previously exclusively offered on Cadillac’s V-Series model, will be offered on all CTS Coupe models as an option.

The car offers a host of advanced technologies, including:

- Integrated iPod/MP3 capability- 40-gig hard drive, including the ability to store music and pause-and-replay live radio

- Pop-up navigation system- Adaptive forward lighting system- Bluetooth connectivity- Standard Keyless Access and Smart Remote Start- Rear Camera system- Bose 5.1 Cabin Surround™ audio system

As with other Cadillac models, the CTS Coupe comes standard with OnStar with Turn-by-Turn Navigation, the first factory-installed, fully integrated GPS navigation system from OnStar. w

AndyRoddick

Roddick was born in Omaha, Nebraska to Jerry and Blanche Roddick. Roddick’s father was a businessman and his mother

was a school teacher. She now directs the Andy Roddick Foundation. Roddick lived in Austin, Texas, from age 4 until he was 11, then moved to Boca Raton, Florida in the interest of his brother John’s tennis career, where he lived, first attending Boca Prep International School which Mardy Fish and later Jesse Levine also attended, until graduating from Highlands Christian Academy in 2000. Roddick played varsity basketball in high school alongside Davis Cup teammate Mardy Fish, who trained and lived with Roddick in 1999. During that time period, he sometimes trained with Venus and Serena Williams; he later moved back to Austin.

Roddick began dating singer Mandy Moore in 2002. Moore, after reading a magazine article about him, thought he was “really cute,” so she sent her mother, who was attending a tournament in Toronto, to invite him to her set on a movie she was shooting nearby, How to Deal. Roddick accepted and they began dating. Roddick ended the relationship in March 2004. While flipping through the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, Roddick spotted Brooklyn Decker, a fashion model. He had his agent contact her. The two dated since at least the 2007 Davis Cup. On March 31, 2008, Roddick announced on his website that he and Decker had become engaged and they were then married in Austin on April 17, 2009.

Roddick seriously considered quitting competitive tennis at the age of 17, when he had a losing streak in the juniors. His coach, Tarik w

Benhabiles, talked him into giving tennis four more months of undivided attention. Roddick finished as the # 6 junior in the U.S. in 1999-2000, and as the # 1 junior in the world in 2000. He won six world junior singles and seven doubles titles, and won the US Open and Australian Open junior singles titles in 2000. In March in Miami, in the first round Roddick had his first major victory as he beat world # 41 Fernando Vicente of Spain, 6-4, 6-0. In August in Washington, DC, he beat world # 30 Fabrice Santoro of France, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Roddick played the Banana Bowl in the city of São Paulo and won, beating Joachim Johansson in the final match. Roddick also won the Australian Junior Open, defeating Mario Ancic in the final. In 2001, Roddick defeated Michael Chang in 5 sets in the second round of the French Open. During Wimbledon, he further showed potential by taking a set from eventual winner Goran Ivanišević. He also defeated 7-time Wimbledon champion, world # 4, and fellow American Pete Sampras, at the age of 19, at the Miami Masters, 7-6 (2), 6-3 in March, and world # 1 Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2 in August.

Roddick’s breakthrough year was in 2003, in which he defeated Younes El Aynaoui in the quarterfinals of 2003 Australian Open. Roddick and the Moroccan battled for five hours, with the fifth set (21-19 in favor of Roddick) being the longest fifth set in a Grand Slam tournament during the open era, at 2 hours 23 minutes. Despite a lackluster French Open, Roddick enjoyed success in the United Kingdom by winning Queen’s Club (beating world # 2 Agassi 6-1, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (6) along the way) and reaching the Wimbledon semifinals, where he lost to eventual champion Federer in straight sets. He avenged that loss in August, beating world #3 Federer in Montreal, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (3).

Roddick’s hardcourt record in 2003 included his first Masters Series titles – coming at Canada and Cincinnati – and his first Grand Slam title. At the U.S. Open, Roddick rallied from two sets down and a match point against him in the semifinals to beat David Nalbandian 6-7 (4), 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-1, 6-3. He then defeated world # 3 Juan Carlos Ferrero in the final, 6–3, 7–6, 6–3. At the Tennis Masters Cup in Houston he defeated world # 7 Carlos Moya of Spain, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, and world # 4 Guillermo Coria of Argentina, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3, before losing to Federer in the semifinals. By the end of the year, at age 21, he was ranked # 1, the first American to finish a year at # 1 since Andre Agassi in 1999. He also became the youngest American to hold this rank since computer rankings were started in 1973. Roddick’s reign at #1 ended the following February, when Roger Federer ascended to the top position after winning his first Australian Open. In April Roddick again beat world # 6 Moya, this time 5-7, 6-2, 7-5. In June, Roddick advanced to his first Wimbledon final, and after taking the first set from defending champion Federer, lost in four sets. Roddick was knocked out during the 2004 U.S. Open in a five-set quarterfinal against another big server, Joachim Johansson. Later in September in Bangkok he beat world # 9 Marat Safin of Russia, 7-6 (1), 6-7 (7), 7-6 (2). At the 2004 Summer Olympics, Roddick lost to Chilean Fernando González, the eventual bronze medal winner, in the third round. In November he beat world # 7 Tim Henman of Great Britain 7-5, 7-6 (6), world # 4 Safin, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (4), and world # 6 Coria 7-6 (4), 6-3. Later that year, Roddick teamed up with Mardy Fish and Bob and Mike Bryan on the U.S. Davis Cup team that lost to Spain in the final in Seville. Roddick lost his singles match against Rafael Nadal, who would in the following year win the French Open. Towards the end of 2004, Roddick fired his coach of 18 months, Brad Gilbert, and hired assistant Davis Cup coach Dean Goldfine. Roddick finished 2004 ranked as the world # 2, the U.S.’s # 1, and the player with the most aces (1,017). In 2004 Roddick saved fellow tennis player Sjeng Schalken and other guests (including close friends Ben Campezi and Dean Monroe)

from a hotel fire. Roddick’s first 2005 tournament victory was the SAP Open in San Jose, California, where he became the first to win the event in consecutive years since Mark Philippoussis in 1999 and 2000. The top-seeded Roddick defeated Cyril Saulnier 6–0, 6–4 in 50 minutes, the event’s first championship shutout set since Arthur Ashe beat Guillermo Vilas in 1975. In March he defeated World No. 7 Carlos Moya 6–7 (4), 6–4, 6–1. In April, Roddick won the U.S. Men’s Claycourt Championships, reclaiming the title he won in 2001 and 2002. (He lost in 2003 to Agassi, and in 2004 to Tommy Haas.) In May, Roddick had match point against Spain’s Fernando Verdasco. Verdasco was attempting to save the match point on his second serve, when the linesman erroneously called the serve out. If this call had held, Roddick would have won the match. Roddick motioned to the umpire, pointing to the clear ball mark on the clay indicating the ball was in, and the call was consequently changed. Verdasco went on to win the match. At the French Open, Roddick lost to the unseeded Argentine José Acasuso in the second round, and at Wimbledon, Roddick lost to Federer in the final for the second consecutive year. In August, he defeated World No. 3 Lleyton Hewitt, 6–4, 7–6 (4) at the Masters Series tournament in Cincinnati. At the US Open, Roddick was defeated by World No. 70 Gilles Müller in the first round. Roddick’s last US Open first round loss had been in 2000. At the Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon, Roddick defeated Gaël Monfils to wrap up a tournament without losing a set or getting his serve broken.

Kettlebell(The most effective mean of strength development)

A kettlebell or girya as it is called in Russian is a traditional Russian cast iron weight that looks like a cannonball with a handle. The

ultimate tool for extreme all-round fitness.

The kettlebell goes way back. First, it appeared in a Russian dictionary in 1704 (Cherkikh, 1994). So popular were kettlebells in Tsarist Russia that any strongman or weightlifter was referred to as a girevik, or ‘a kettlebell man’.

Kettlebell delivers extreme all-round fitness. And no single other tool does it better. Here is a short list of hardware the Russian kettlebell replaces: barbells, dumbbells, belts for weighted pull-ups and dips, thick bars, lever bars, medicine balls, grip devices, and cardio equipment.

Kettlebells melt fat without the dishonor of dieting or aerobics. If you are overweight, you will lean out. If you are skinny, you will get built up. According to Voropayev (1997) who studied top Russian gireviks, 21.2% increased their bodyweight since taking up kettlebelling and 21.2%, mostly heavyweights, decreased it. The Russian kettlebell is a powerful tool for fixing your body comp, whichever way it needs fixing.

The Russian Special Forces personnel owe much of their wiry strength, explosive agility, and never-quitting stamina to kettlebells. The official Soviet armed forces strength training manual pronounced kettlebell drills to be “one of the most effective means of strength development” representing “a new era in the development of human strength-potential”.

The elite of the US military and law enforcement instantly recognized the power of the Russian kettlebell, ruggedly simple and deadly effective as an AK-47.

Once the Russian kettlebell became a hit among those whose life depends on their strength and conditioning, it took off among hard people from all walks of life: martial artists and athletes.

Kettlebell training is extreme but not elitist. At the 1995 Russian Championship the youngest contestant was 16, the oldest 53! And we are talking elite competition here; the range is even wider if you are training for yourself rather than for the gold. Dr. Krayevskiy, the father of the kettlebell sport, took up training at the age of forty-one and twenty years later he was said to look fresher and healthier than at forty.

Kettlebells come in ‘poods’. A pood is an old Russian measure of weight, which equals 16kg, or roughly 35 lbs. An average man should start with a 35-pounder. It does not sound like a lot but believe it; it feels a lot heavier than it should! Most men will eventually progress to a 53-pounder, the standard issue size in the Russian military.

An average woman should start with an 18-pounder. A strong woman can go for a 26-pounder. Some women will advance to a 35-pounder. A few hard women will go beyond.

“Kettlebells are like weightlifting times ten,” stated Olympic Silver Medalist in Greco-Roman Wrestling Dennis Koslowski.

3-DMoviesIn film, the term 3-D is used to describe any visual presentation

system that attempts to maintain or recreate moving images of the

third dimension, the illusion of depth as seen by the viewer.

The technique usually involves filming two images simultaneously,

with two cameras positioned side by side, generally facing each

other and filming at a 90 degree angle via mirrors, in perfect

synchronization and with identical technical characteristics.

When viewed in such a way that each eye sees its photographed

counterpart, the viewer’s visual cortex will interpret the pair of images

as a single three-dimensional image. Modern computer technology

also allows for the production of pseudo-3D films using CGI and

without the need for dual cameras. The term “3-D computer gaming”

refers to an altogether different technology and effect.

Stereoscopic motion pictures can be produced through a variety of

different methods. Over the years the popularity of various systems

being widely employed in movie theaters have waxed and waned.

During the early “Golden Era” of 3-D cinematography of the 1950s

the anaglyph system was the most popular in American theaters. In

the 21st century, polarization 3-D systems have begun to supersede

the older anaglyph 3-D system, both inside of, and outside of the

US. Following are some of the technical details and methodologies

employed in some of the more notable 3-D movie systems that have

been developed:

Anaglyph images were, until recently, the most popular method of

presenting 3-D and the one 3-D method most commonly associated

with stereoscopy by the public at large. They were made popular both

because of the ease of their production, and also due to the fact that

this technology was the first 3-D technology widely adopted by the

Hollywood film industry.

In an anaglyph, the two images are either superimposed in an

additive light setting through two filters, one red and one cyan. In

a subtractive light setting, the two images are printed in the same

complementary colors on white paper. Glasses with colored filters in

either eye separate the appropriate images by canceling the filter color

out and rendering the complementary color black.

Anaglyph images are much easier to view than either parallel sighting

or crossed eye stereograms, although the latter types offer bright

and accurate color rendering, particularly in the red component,

which is muted, or desaturated with even the best color anaglyphs.

A compensating technique, commonly known as Anachrome, uses a

slightly more transparent cyan filter in the patented glasses associated

with the technique. Process reconfigures the typical anaglyph image

to have less parallax.

With the eclipse method, a mechanical shutter blocks light from

each appropriate eye when the converse eye’s image is projected

on the screen. The projector alternates between left and right

images, and opens and closes the shutters in the glasses or viewer in

synchronization with the images on the screen.

A variation on the eclipse method is used in LCD shutter glasses.

Glasses containing liquid crystal that will let light through in

synchronization with the images on the computer display, using the

concept of alternate-frame sequencing.ww

My nextbirthday

I’ll turn to 22 and I think, Twenty one years of perfumes and the usual girly stuff are enough .. I remember, Birthday gifts were something I was interestingly waiting for. Precisely, it was something I was “dying for”… the way I say it. But I’m not anymore. Despite the fact that I didn’t celebrate all my 21 birthdays, I had my good time and my nice presents, and I’m greatly appreciating them until now. But I don’t know why I want something different and big this time! ... Unluckily, Gifts are not what I’m going to talk about next, And nah I’m not going to write down my wish list or the very recommended gifts for my coming birthday now. I was just wondering about what does becoming ONE more year older mean.. And if being 22 is something good? I wondered if I’m acting in a way that reflects my age ?, Have you ever thought about it ?

Is there something I missed to do, Or I may miss doing it after being 22?? Am I still a young girl? Or it’s more proper to start calling myself a WOMAN? And do I have to stop wearing my casual wear, my modest jeans and my messy make up ? Most important, do I have to wear like those girls I see in college and malls!? Oh how much I hate it! [no offense! ]. Perhaps I have to wear brands now

Maybe I shall act in a more classy way , a lady like once. But I still feel too young for those stuff ! Well, I know deep inside, I’ve always wanted to be a real lady but it had always been delayed .. For no due time. It have been always “ too early” , I never thought I have to grow up, I didn’t think I will be 22 one day. I thought I will stay a 15 or 16 years old girl forever.

But obviously , “forever “ is a word to be used only in fictions!ww

BollywoodIndustry

Bollywood is the informal term popularly used for the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai, India. The term is often

used to refer to the whole of Indian cinema. Bollywood is the largest film producer in India and one of the largest in the world. Bollywood is generally referred to as Hindi cinema, though frequent use of poetic Urdu words is fairly common. There has been a growing presence of Indian English in dialogue and songs as well. It is not uncommon to see films that feature dialogue with English words and phrases, or even whole sentences.

Raja Harishchandra (1913), was the first silent feature film made in India. By the 1930s, the industry was producing over 200 films per annum. The first Indian sound film, Ardeshir Irani’s Alam Ara (1931), was a major commercial success. There was clearly a huge market for talkies and musicals; Bollywood and all the regional film industries quickly switched to sound filming.

The 1930s and 1940s were tumultuous times: India was buffeted by the Great Depression, World War II, the Indian independence movement, and the violence of the Partition. Most Bollywood films were unabashedly escapist, but there were also a number of filmmakers who tackled tough social issues, or used the struggle for Indian independence as a backdrop for their plots. Following India’s independence, the period from the late 1940s to the 1960s are regarded by film historians as the “Golden Age” of Hindi cinema. Some of the most critically-acclaimed Hindi films of all time were produced during this period. These films expressed social themes mainly dealing with working-class urban life in India.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, romance movies and action films starred actors like Rajesh Khanna and Dharmendra, and actresses like Sharmila Tagore, Mumtaz, Leena Chandavarkar and Helen. In the mid-1970s, romantic confections made way for violent films about gangsters and bandits. Amitabh Bachchan, the star known for his “angry young man” roles, rode the crest of this trend with actors like Mithun Chakraborty and Anil Kapoor, which lasted into the early 1990s. Actresses from this era included Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan and Rekha.

The 2000s saw a growth in Bollywood’s popularity in the world. This led the nation’s filmmaking to new heights in terms of quality, cinematography and innovative story lines as well as technical advances in areas such as special effects, animation, etc. Some of the largest production houses, among them Yash Raj Films and Dharma Productions were the producers of new modern films. The opening up of the overseas market, more Bollywood releases abroad and the explosion of multiplexes in big cities, led to wider box office successes in India and abroad, including Lagaan (2001), Devdas (2002), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Veer-Zaara (2004), Rang De Basanti (2006), Krrish (2006), Dhoom 2 (2006), Taare Zameen Par (2007), and Ghajini (2008), delivering a new generation of popular actors Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan and actresses Aishwarya Rai, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji, and keeping the popularity of actors of the previous decade. Among the mainstream films, Lagaan won the Audience Award at the Locarno International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards.

In the 2000s, Bollywood began influencing musical films in the Western world, and played a particularly instrumental role in the revival of the American musical film genre. Baz Luhrmann stated that his musical film Moulin Rouge! (2001) was directly inspired by Bollywood musicals. The film incorporated an Indian-themed play based on the ancient Sanskrit drama The Little Clay Cart and a Bollywood-style dance sequence with a song from the film China Gate. The critical and financial success of Moulin Rouge! renewed interest in the then-moribund Western musical genre.

Bollywood films are mostly musicals, and are expected to contain catchy music in the form of song-and-dance numbers woven into the script. A film’s success often depends on the quality of such musical numbers. Indeed, a film’s music is often released before the movie itself and helps increase the audience.

Indian audiences expect full value for their money, with a good entertainer generally referred to as paisa vasool. Songs and dances, love triangles, comedy and dare-devil thrills are all mixed up in a three-hour-long extravaganza with an intermission. Such movies are called masala films, after the Hindi word for a spice mixture. Like masalas, these movies are a mixture of many things such as action, comedy, romance etc. Most films have heroes who are able to fight off villains all by themselves. Bollywood plots have tended to be melodramatic. They frequently employ formulaic ingredients such as star-crossed lovers and angry parents, love triangles, family ties, sacrifice, corrupt politicians, kidnappers, conniving villains, long-lost relatives and siblings separated by fate, dramatic reversals of fortune, and convenient coincidences.

There have always been Indian films with more artistic aims and more sophisticated stories, both inside and outside the Bollywood tradition. They often lost out at the box office to movies with more mass appeal. Bollywood conventions are changing, however. A large Indian Diaspora in English speaking countries, and increased Western influence at home, have nudged Bollywood films closer to Hollywood models.

TaylorSwift

Swift was born in the borough of Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. She is the

daughter of Scott Swift, a stock broker, and his wife Andrea, a homemaker. She has a younger brother, Austin. When she was in fourth grade, Swift won a national poetry contest with a three-page poem entitled “Monster In My Closet”.

hour marathon in 1996. In Summer 2008, Swift released Beautiful

Eyes, an EP sold exclusively at Wal-Mart. In its first week of release,

the album sold 45,000 copies, debuting at #1 on Billboard’s Top

Country Albums chart and #9 on the Billboard 200. With her self-

titled debut album at #2 the same week, Swift became the first artist

to hold the Top 2 positions of the Top Country Albums chart since

LeAnn Rimes did so in 1997.

Swift’s lyrics are highly autobiographical; she has said that “If you

listen to my albums, it’s like reading my diary.” For instance the song

“Forever & Always” was inspired by her relationship with Joe Jonas,

while the song “Hey Stephen” was written about a guy who opened

some shows for her. It has been said that her lyrics “can be tinged

with acid: the quiet loner girl getting one over on the cheerleaders, or

a caustic payback for the boy who dumped her.” She’s also indicated

that she tries to write so her fans can relate to the lyrics, saying “My

goal is to never write songs that my fans can’t relate to.” The intently

personal nature of the songs have drawn her the most attention.

Swift once said, “I thought people might find them hard to relate to,

but it turned out that the more personal my songs were, the more

closely people could relate to them.” The fact that her songs are so

clearly autobiographical has led to her fans researching them. Swift

once said, “Every single one of the guys that I’ve written songs about

has been tracked down on MySpace by my fans.” ww

She was a member of a local SNL-inspired kid’s sketch comedy group, TheatreKids Live!, where she was a natural comedic talent. After seeing her karaoke performance at one of the cast parties, group founder Kirk Cremer’s mother suggested that Swift seemed better poised to pursue a career in country music than theatrical performing. Cremer soon leased space at a local mall and began to showcase his young protégée in weeknight performances of country songs with karaoke backing tracks. Emboldened by her performances and growing audiences, she began to perform in other local open mike and karaoke nights. Her first major show was a well-received performance at the Bloomsburg Fair, arranged by local performer Pat Garrett. Swift began learning to play guitar from a computer repairman who showed her how to play three chords. After learning those three chords, she wrote her first song, “Lucky You”. She began writing songs regularly and used it as an outlet to help her with her pain from not fitting in at school. Other kids would react badly to her so she wrote songs about them.

Swift’s greatest musical influence is Shania Twain. Her other influences include LeAnn Rimes, Tina Turner, Dolly Parton, and Swift’s grandmother. Although her grandmother was a professional opera singer, Taylor’s tastes always ran more toward country and she developed a love for Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton at an early age. She also credits the Dixie Chicks and Shania Twain for demonstrating how much impact can be made by “stretching boundaries”. At age 11, Swift made her first trip to Nashville, hoping to obtain a record deal by distributing a demo tape of her singing with karaoke songs. She gave a copy to every label in town.[20] Swift was rejected by record labels and her peers.

Swift released her debut single, “Tim McGraw”, in mid-2006, reaching number 6 on Billboard magazine’s Hot Country Songs chart. Her self-titled debut album was later released on October 24, 2006. Swift wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album, which debuted at number 19 on the Billboard 200 and sold 39,000 copies during its first week. It later peaked at number one at Billboard Top Country Albums and number five on the Billboard 200. On November 7, 2007, Swift won the 2007 CMA Horizon Award and also performed

“Our Song,” the third single from her album, which would go on to become her first #1 song the week of December 22, 2007, where it leaped up from the #6 spot. This was the biggest jump to Number One since January 1998, when Tim McGraw’s “Just to See You Smile”, also jumped from #6 to #1.”Our Song” spent six weeks at #1 on the Country charts and also peaked at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #24 on the Billboard Pop 100. Swift also recorded a holiday album, Sounds of the Season: The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection, which was released October 16, 2007, exclusively available at Target stores.

Big Machine Records announced the release of “Should’ve Said No” on Monday, May 19. The song is the fifth and final single from Swift’s debut album. She performed it on the 43rd Annual Academy of Country Music Awards. The performance started off with her dressed in a hooded sweatshirt and jeans, but soon after a short black halter dress was revealed. In the last minute of the song, she went backstage to perform the final verse under a cascading waterfall. Swift had wanted to do that performance on stage with the water and the change of clothes since she was ten years old. “Should’ve Said No” became her second Number One single for the chart dated August 23, 2008. In June 2008, at the CMA Music Festival held in Nashville, Swift signed autographs for nearly eight straight hours. It was the longest autograph-signing session since Garth Brooks’ 23-

His mother, Lateef Fatima, was the adopted daughter of Major General Shah Nawaz Khan of the Janjua Rajput clan, who served as a General in the Indian National Army of Subash Chandra Bose. Khan's father came to New Delhi from Qissa Khawani Bazaar in Peshawar before the partition of India, while his mother's family came from Rawalpindi, British India. Upon moving from New Delhi to Mumbai in 1991, Khan made his Bollywood movie debut in Deewana (1992). The movie became a box office hit, and launched his career in Bollywood. His performance won him a Filmfare Best Male Debut Award. He went on to star in Maya Memsaab, which generated some controversy because of his appearance in an “explicit” sex scene in the movie. In 1993, Khan won acclaim for his performances in villainous roles as an obsessive lover and a murderer, respectively, in the box office hits, Darr and Baazigar. Darr marked his first collaboration with renowned film-maker Yash Chopra and his banner Yash Raj Films, the largest production company in Bollywood. Baazigar, which saw Khan portraying an ambiguous avenger who murders his girlfriend, shocked its Indian audience with an unexpected violation of the standard Bollywood formula. His performance won him his first Filmfare Best Actor Award. In that same year, Khan played the role of a young musician in Kundan Shah's Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, a performance that earned him a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance. Khan maintains that this is his all-time favourite among the movies he has acted in. In 1994, Khan once again played an obsessive lover/psycho's role in Anjaam, co-starring alongside Madhuri Dixit. Though the movie was not a box office success, Khan's performance earned him the Filmfare Best Villain Award. In 1998, Khan starred in Karan Johar's directorial debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which was the biggest hit of the year. His performance won him his fourth Best Actor award at the Filmfare.

Khan's success continued with Aditya Chopra's 2000 film, Mohabbatein, co-starring Amitabh Bachchan. It did well at the box office, and Khan's performance as a college teacher won him his second Critics Award for Best Performance. He also starred in Mansoor Khan's action film Josh. The film starred Khan as the leader of a Christian gang in Goa and Aishwarya Rai as his twin sister, and was also a box office success. In that same year, Khan set up his own production house, Dreamz Unlimited with Juhi Chawla (see below). Both Khan and Chawla starred in the first movie of their production house, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani. His work with Karan Johar continued as he collaborated on the family drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham which was the second biggest hit of the year. He also received favorable reviews for his performance as Emperor Asoka in the historical epic, Asoka, a partly fictionalised account of the life of Ashoka the Great (304 BC–232 BC). In 2002, Khan received acclaim for playing the title role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's award-winning period romance, Devdas. It was the third Hindi movie adaptation of Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay's well-known novel of the same name, and surfaced as one of the biggest hits of that year. Khan also starred opposite Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit in the family-drama Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, which did well at the box office. In 2003, Khan starred in the moderately successful romantic drama, Chalte Chalte. That same year, he starred in the tearjerker, Kal Ho Naa Ho, written by Karan Johar and directed by Nikhil Advani. Khan's performance in this movie as a man with a fatal heart disease was appreciated. The movie proved to be one of the year's biggest hits in India and Bollywood's biggest hit in the overseas markets. 2004 was a particularly good year for Khan, both commercially and critically. He starred in Farah Khan's directorial debut, the comedy Main Hoon Na. The movie did well at the box office. He then played the role of an Indian officer, Veer Pratap Singh in Yash Chopra's love saga Veer-Zaara, which was the biggest hit of 2004 in both India and overseas. The film relates the love story of Veer and Pakistani woman Zaara Haayat Khan, played by Preity Zinta. Khan's performance in the film won him awards at several award ceremonies. In that same year, he received critical acclaim for his performance in Ashutosh Gowariker's drama Swades. He was nominated for the Filmfare Best Actor Award for all three of his releases in 2004, winning it for Swades.

KatieHolmes

Holmes was born in Toledo, Ohio, the youngest in a family of five children (four daughters, one son) of Kathleen A. Holmes,

baptized a Roman Catholic, attended Christ the King Church and parochial schools in Toledo. Her high school was the all-female Notre Dame Academy, her mother’s alma mater, where Katie was a 4.0 student At St. John’s Jesuit, a nearby all-male high school, she appeared in school musicals, playing a waiter in Hello, Dolly! and Lola in Damn Yankees. She scored 1310 out of 1600 on her SAT and was accepted to Columbia University (and attended for a summer session); her father wanted her to be a doctor. Holmes loved reading:

“I never feel lonely in a bookstore”, she said. A British writer profiling her in 2003 said “The way Holmes approached her unusual education was as American as apple pie: she went to cheerleading practice, got straight A grades, and made a pledge that she would remain a virgin until marriage.” Holmes told her hometown paper The Blade that the three words best describing herself were “honest, determined, and imaginative.” At age fourteen she began classes at a modeling school in Toledo run by Margaret O’Brien, who took her to IMTA, the International Modeling and Talent Association Competition held in New York City in 1996. There she found an agent after performing a monologue from To Kill a Mockingbird. An audition tape was sent to the casting director for the 1997 film The Ice Storm, directed by Ang Lee. She was cast in the role of Libbets Casey, in the film which starred Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver. Ang Lee told The Blade,

“Katie was cast because she had the perfect amount of innocence and worldliness that we needed for Libbets. I was really taken by her wide open eyes. She really is a beautiful girl but there is also a lot of intelligence there and it shows.”

In January 1997, Holmes went to Los Angeles for pilot season, when producers cast and shoot new programs in the hopes of securing a spot on a network schedule. The Blade reported she was offered the lead in Buffy the Vampire Slayer but she turned it down. Columbia Tri-Star Television, producer of a new show created by screenwriter Kevin Williamson, asked her to come to Los Angeles to audition, but there was a conflict with her schedule. “I was doing my school play, Damn Yankees. And I was playing Lola. I even got to wear the feather boa. I thought, ‘There is no way I’m not playing Lola to go audition for some network. I couldn’t let my school down. We had already sold a lot of tickets. So I told Kevin and The WB, ‘I’m sorry. I just can’t meet with you this week. I’ve got other commitments.’” The producers permitted her to audition on videotape. Holmes read for the part of Joey Potter, the tomboy best friend of the title character Dawson, on a videotape shot in her basement, her mother reading Dawson’s lines. The Hollywood Reporter claimed the story of Holmes’s audition

“has become the stuff of legend” and “no one even thought that it was weird that one of the female leads would audition via Federal Express.” Holmes won the part. Paul Stupin, executive producer of the show, said his first reaction on seeing her audition tape was

“That’s Joey Potter!” Creator and executive producer Kevin Williamson said Holmes has a “unique combination of talent, beauty and skill that makes Hollywood come calling. But that’s just the beginning. To meet her is to instantly fall under her spell.” Williamson thought she had exactly the right look for Joey Potter. “She had those eyes, those eyes just stained with loneliness.”

In 2005, Holmes characterized her film career as being a string of “bombs.” “Usually I’m not even in the top ten”, she said, the highest grossing film of her career at that time being Phone Booth, in which she played a supporting role. She lamented “It’s not like I have a lot of stuff that’s great just waiting for me to sign on to.”

Her first leading role came in Disturbing Behavior (1998), a Scream-era Stepford Wives-goes-to-high school thriller, where she was a

about “what happens if our very own ‘good ole Katie’ morphs into ‘Katie Holmes, the former actress now better known as Tom Cruise’s third wife.’” Asked in an interview how she felt about reports that friends in Toledo are worried about her, Holmes replied, “People who say that aren’t my friends.” Following the engagement, the Chicago Tribune sent a reporter to Toledo who found the citizens felt the biggest star from their city was not Holmes, but Jamie Farr, who played Corporal Maxwell Klinger on M*A*S*H. “I think he’s bigger than Katie. He’s so humble and he’s so proud of his hometown—he name-drops it all the time. If it wasn’t for Jamie, I don’t think people would really know about Toledo”, said a Toledo waitress. Others quoted by the newspaper were puzzled by her interest in Scientology. Farr subsequently wrote a letter to the newspaper declaring “I admire Katie Holmes. She is a wonderful, beautiful actress” and “I do not feel that Katie and I are in any form of competition in the city of Toledo.” On November 18, 2006, Holmes and Cruise were married at the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy, in a Scientology ceremony attended by many Hollywood stars. The actors’ publicist said the couple had “officialized” their marriage in Los Angeles the day before the Italian ceremony.

On April 18, 2006, Holmes gave birth to a baby girl named Suri. A Vanity Fair article reported that Suri arrived exactly one year after Cruise and Holmes met, April 18, 2005. The Los Angeles Times summarized the written statement Cruise released on the birth, saying the name “is a word with origins in both Hebrew and Persian. In Hebrew, it means ‘princess’ and in Persian, ‘red rose,’ it was claimed in the release.” Although some Hebrew linguists had never seen the word for “princess” spelled this way and its meaning, others said it was a Yiddish, not Hebrew, derivation of “Sarah”

loner from the wrong side of the tracks. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times wrote her character, Rachel, “dresses in black and likes to strike poses on the beds of pickup trucks and is a bad girl who is in great danger of becoming a very good one.” The actress won a MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance for the role, though Holmes said the film was “just horrible.”

Holmes made her Broadway debut in the revival of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons in September 2008. She opened to mixed reviews. The New York Times’ Ben Brantley claimed “the neophyte Ms. Holmes” is a

“sad casualty” of director Simon McBurney’s “high concept approach” to the play. He adds that “Ms. Holmes delivers most of her lines with meaningful asperity, italicising every word”. Clive Barnes of the New York Post was similarly unimpressed by Holmes - and had few compliments for her co-stars. He wrote, “Lithgow starts in a sunny, benign fashion, but eventually finds himself screeching alongside Holmes, looking tough under a glossy wig.” However, The New York Daily News’ Joe Dziemianowicz was won over by the actress’ first stint on stage, writing, “Holmes, a TV and film vet, makes a fine Broadway debut. Her rather grand speech pattern takes getting used to, but she seems comfortable and adds a fitting glint of glamour.” In 2009, Holmes appeared in the National Memorial Day Concert on the Mall in Washington, D.C. in a dialogue with Dianne Wiest celebrating the life of an American veteran seriously wounded in Iraq, José Pequeño.

Weeks after her relationship with Chris Klein ended, Holmes began dating actor Tom Cruise. Their first public appearance together was on April 29, 2005, in Rome, Italy, at the David di Donatello Awards, the Italian equivalent of the Oscars.[87] Her family expressed support, with her father stating, “We’re very excited for Katie”, and saying his daughter was “a very mature young lady with a good head on her shoulders. From all we have read and heard about [Cruise], he’s a humanitarian and a real class act. From the perspective of a parent, we’re very excited for both of them”. Holmes’s sister Tamara said, “They’re both wonderful people.” On May 23, 2005, Cruise appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, jumping on Winfrey’s couch and vociferously declaring his love for Holmes. He went backstage and pulled the embarrassed actress onto the program.Cruise proposed to Holmes in the early morning of June 17, 2005, atop Paris’s Eiffel Tower; she accepted. At the press conference, attended by Holmes’s mother, Cruise announced the news, declaring, “Today is a magnificent day for me. I’m engaged to a magnificent woman.” Back in Toledo, the news was greeted with skepticism. Even before Holmes’s engagement, her hometown paper was already speculating

In 2004, she starred in the romantic comedy Little Black Book, and the critically acclaimed Sin City (2005). She starred in two Edward Burns films: Sidewalks of New York (2001) and The Groomsmen (2006). Film critic Roger Ebert acclaimed her acting talent, giving good reviews to several of her films and comparing her to Lucille Ball. In 2009, she was cast in the Lifetime TV movie, Tribute, as the main character, Cilla.

Murphy landed her first job in Hollywood when she was age 14, starring as Brenda Drexell in the series

Drexell’s Class. She then went on to play Molly Morgan in the short-lived The Torkelsons spinoff Almost Home. Murphy also guest-starred on several television series, including Parker Lewis Can’t Lose, Blossom and Frasier. She also had recurring roles on Sister, Sister; Party of Five and Boy Meets World. In 1997, she began voicing the character of Luanne Platter (as well as the younger version of Joseph Gribble) on the long-running animated series King of the Hill.

She was set to appear in the Sylvester Stallone film, The Expendables, which will be released in 2010. Murphy was also a voice actor. She voiced the character Luanne Platter on the FOX animated sitcom King of the Hill for the entirety of the show’s run. She also provided the voice for Gloria the penguin in the 2006 feature Happy Feet.[12] She was nominated for an Annie Award for voice acting in the King of the Hill episode

“Movin’ On Up.” Murphy shot her last film, the thriller/drama Abandoned, in June 2009. The film is scheduled for release in 2010.

She was in a band called Blessed Soul with fellow actor Eric Balfour in the early 1990s. On June 6, 2006, Murphy and Paul Oakenfold released the single “Faster Kill Pussycat,” from the album A Lively Mind. The song became a club hit, and hit number one on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart. It also hit number seven in the UK singles chart in June 2006. She dabbled in music again with the release of the film Happy Feet, in which she covered Queen’s “Somebody to Love” and Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Boogie Wonderland.” Murphy starred in Wheatus’ video “A Little Respect” alongside actor Shawn Hatosy. She also appeared in the music video for Luscious Jackson’s “Here” and Tears for Fears’ “Closest Thing to Heaven.”

In late 2002, Murphy began dating Ashton Kutcher, her co-star in Just Married. Once engaged to talent manager Jeff Kwatinetz, Murphy became engaged to Joe Macaluso in December 2005, a production assistant she met while working on the film Little Black Book. In August 2006, they ended their engagement. In May 2007, Murphy married British screenwriter Simon Monjack in a private Jewish ceremony in Los Angeles. For the last three and a half years of her life, Murphy, her mother and Monjack lived in the same house together.

At 8:00 a.m. on December 20, 2009, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to “a medical request” at the Los Angeles home Murphy and Monjack shared. She apparently collapsed in a bathroom. Firefighters attempted to resuscitate Murphy on the scene. She was subsequently transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead on arrival at 10:04 a.m. after going into cardiac arrest.[The official cause of death is yet to be determined, but Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter told the Associated Press: “It appears to be natural.” An autopsy was performed on December 21, 2009. Full results will not be available for several weeks; authorities are looking into her medical records and toxicology reports.Murphy was buried at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills on December 24, 2009.

Hollywood

Hollywood is a district in Los Angeles, situated west-northwest of Downtown Los Angeles. Due to its fame and cultural identity

as the historical center of movie studios and movie stars, the word “Hollywood” is often used as a metonymy of American cinema. The nickname Tinseltown refers to the glittering, superficial nature of Hollywood and the movie industry. Today, much of the movie industry has dispersed into surrounding areas such as the Westside neighborhood, but significant auxiliary industries, such as editing, effects, props, post-production and lighting companies, remain in Hollywood, as does the backlot of Paramount Pictures. Many historic Hollywood theaters are used as venues and concert stages to premiere major theatrical releases and host the Academy Awards. It is a popular destination for nightlife, tourism, and is home to the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Although it is not the typical practice of the city of Los Angeles to establish specific boundaries for districts or neighborhoods, Hollywood is a recent exception. On February 16, 2005, California Assembly Members Goldberg and Koretz introduced a bill to require California to keep specific records on Hollywood as though it were independent. For this to be done, the boundaries were defined. This bill was unanimously supported by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and the Los Angeles City Council. Assembly Bill 588 was approved by the Governor on August 28, 2006, and now the district of Hollywood has official borders. The border can be loosely described as the area east of Beverly Hills and West Hollywood, south of Mulholland Drive, Laurel Canyon, Cahuenga Boulevard, and Barham Boulevard, and the cities of Burbank and Glendale, north of Melrose Avenue and west of the Golden State Freeway and Hyperion Avenue. This includes all of Griffith Park and Los Feliz—two areas that were hitherto generally considered separate from Hollywood by most Angelenos. The population of the district, including Los Feliz, as of the 2000 census was 167,664 and the median household income was $33,409 in 1999.

Filmmaking in the greater Los Angeles area preceded the establishment of filmmaking in Hollywood. The Biograph Company filmed the short film A Daring Hold-Up in Southern California in Los Angeles in 1906. The first studio in the Los Angeles area was established by the Selig Polyscope Company in Edendale, with construction beginning in August 1909. In early 1910, director D. W. Griffith was sent by the Biograph Company to the west coast with his troupe, consisting of actors Blanche Sweet, Lillian Gish, Mary Pickford, Lionel Barrymore and others. They started filming on a vacant lot in downtown Los Angeles. The company decided to explore new territories and traveled five miles (8 km) north to the little village of Hollywood, which was friendly and enjoyed the movie company filming there. Griffith then filmed the first film ever shot in Hollywood called In Old California, a one-reel melodrama set in Mexican colonial-era California in the 1800s. The movie company stayed there for months and made many, many films before returning to New York. The first studio in Hollywood was established by the New Jersey-based Centaur Co., which wanted to make westerns in California. They rented an unused roadhouse at 6121 Sunset Boulevard at the corner of Gower, and converted it into a movie studio in October 1911, calling it Nestor Studio after the name of the western branch of their company. The first feature film made specifically in a Hollywood studio, in 1914, was The Squaw Man, directed by Cecil B. DeMille and Oscar Apfel, and was filmed at the Lasky-DeMille Barn amongst other area locations.

In 1985, the Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment District was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places protecting important buildings and ensuring that the significance of Hollywood’s past would always be a part of its future. In June 1999, the long-awaited Hollywood extension of the Los Angeles County Metro Rail Red Line subway opened, running from Downtown Los Angeles to the Valley, with stops along Hollywood Boulevard at Western Avenue, Vine Street and Highland Avenue. The Kodak Theatre, which opened in 2001 on Hollywood Boulevard at Highland Avenue, where the historic Hollywood Hotel once stood, has become the new home of the Oscars. While motion picture production still occurs within the Hollywood district, most major studios are actually located elsewhere in the Los Angeles region. Paramount Pictures is the only major studio still physically located within Hollywood. Other studios in the district include the aforementioned Jim Henson (formerly Chaplin) Studios, Sunset Gower Studios, and Raleigh Studios.

In 2002, a number of Hollywood citizens began a campaign for the district to secede from Los Angeles and become, as it had been a century earlier, its own incorporated municipality. Secession supporters argued that the needs of their community were being ignored by the leaders of Los Angeles. In June of that year, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors placed secession referendums for both Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley on the ballots for a “citywide election.” To pass, they required the approval of a majority of voters in the proposed new municipality as well as a majority of voters in all of Los Angeles. In the November election, both referendums failed by wide margins in the citywide vote. Hollywood is served by several neighborhood councils, including the Hollywood United Neighborhood Council (HUNC) and the Hollywood Studio District Neighborhood Council. These two groups are part of the network of neighborhood councils certified by the City of Los Angeles Department of Neighborhood Empowerment, or DONE. Neighborhood Councils cast advisory votes on such issues as zoning, planning, and other community issues. The council members are voted in by stakeholders, generally defined as anyone living, working, owning property, or belonging to an organization within the boundaries of the council.w

Chapter One ofThe Legacy

With a blurry vision and a ramping headache, I silence my alarm clock and slither out of bed. It is four in the afternoon. Perfect

time for murder. I wobble to the hotel room’s bathroom and dab my face in tap water. Most major hotels have reopened since the invasion: The Kuwait International, Plaza, Carlton Towers, Sahara, Sheraton, Holiday Inn and the Meridian. I don’t understand why my Kuwaiti agent booked a room in the Meridian but I don’t complain. Any debate might expose my faulty papers. I cannot afford to be imprisoned. I am the last of the Paxtons; the owner of the family burden, the wielder of our legacy.

I slide blue denim trousers over my legs and enshroud my chest with a light cotton shirt, the color of blanched almond. I tuck it in, smooth the creases, and snap the collar. I head to my dresser and extract a first generation golden Glock. I smile maliciously and examine its magazine. It holds six bullets made of silver. A werewolf’s Kryptonite. A withered photograph lies next to the radiating pistol, a daguerreotype taken during the 1890s of a Persian man, broad, muscular, glaring back at me with thick black eyebrows. I slip the sepia into my shirt’s pocket. With the Glock securely held by my trousers’ elastic band, I don a grey suit jacket and leave my room.

Electric power returned to most parts of the city so the elevators work. My nerves are agitated though. Hoping that walking would yield equanimity, I skip the elevator for the stairs. I’ve never killed a man before. Or a werewolf for that matter. As I descend three levels of carpeted stairs, I remember my grandfather, Long Luis Paxton. He had been born in 1851 and took part in the Lincoln County War of New Mexico. A twenty-seven year old romantic, that’s what he was. Growing up through the Civil War softened him. It made him suspicious of all sorts of dogmas. So although he took part in the war, urged by his family and the prospects of their cattle ranch, he cared naught about its outcome. It was then that he met Arad Arsalan, a cub. Heir to chief Arsalan, the pack’s leader. And it was then that he

made the discovery that would shock me ninety-seven years later: werewolves are not a myth.

The lobby is loud, vociferous with English speaking individuals and ripe with jocundity. I walk towards them forming the question in my head: have you seen this man? Man, of course, not werewolf. No one would believe me otherwise. Not even my partner who endured years of trenchant research and investigating the whereabouts of

“this man.” Not even my Emily who waits for me back home. “Right,” she had said before I boarded, “I’m letting you go because I love you, but you have to promise me Jo, no more searching. I’m twenty-eight now, I might get a promotion soon so I’ll have to settle down. I want a house, a family, and a husband, Jo. A husband who’s not traveling all over the world looking for some Arab who’s killed his grandfather ninety years ago.” When she puts it like that it makes me sound deranged. Obsessive compulsive and driven by familial revenge. Well, it’s not like that. Not at all. Arad Arsalan had not only killed my grandfather, but he’s murdered my father as well: Albert ‘Gunnerslick’ Paxton. For years my dad sought revenge. He recognized Arad for a wretch, an abomination of nature. My dad disappeared in 1959 just as he was enlisting in Vietnam. I’ve learnt all this from his journals, the ones he’s left with his sister: Nana. Her dying wish was that I should never read them. That I should never follow in my father’s footsteps. That I should just forget the Arsalans and live with the Paxtons.

What can I say? I was fourteen, it was 1973 and I was smoking with a bunch of friends. I thought I saw a vision. My father, pale, translucent, frantic. He might have called me Hamlet. Avenge me! He’d cried among a string of slurry phrases. I was still oscitant when I invaded Nana’s storage and pulled out my father’s journals. I was alert, wide-eyed and lucid when I was done reading them. I promised to kill the fiend, not simply to avenge my father and his father, but to save others from the savage.

Nineteen years later, I discovered that he’s been living in Kuwait for decades. My aim is to finish him and absolve myself from my mission. To liberate myself from my family legacy. To go back home, wed Emily and build our two-story house with the picket fence.

“Paxton!” yells a round British man with a fleshy neck. “Wait don’t tell me. Something Paxton. Something that starts with a P? Peter? Paul?”

“Very close,” I say then smile. “Jordan.”

“Oh bugger! I could’ve sworn it started with a P.”

A woman, much past her prime with a lustrous smile says, “Arnold, it’s this lax mentality that’s frustrating your agent.”

“Puh!” Exclaims Arnold, and holds up a glass of lemonade filled to the brim with crushed ice. “My agent did not tell me that Kuwait was not building anything new, only reconstructing old buildings. This is not the construction heaven advertised in the press.”

“It’s not that bad,” says a thin man in a black business suit with a pencil moustache and long fingers.

The woman with the lustrous smile says, “It’s not that bad? Remind us Jacob, how many millions have you made already? And that in less than a week. I’m telling you, they should have indicated that Kuwait was only looking to refurbish and upgrade their oil refineries. But all that nonsense about needing specialized engineers and data analyst is hogwash.”

Jacob smiles and sips his lemonade. He doesn’t respond. He merely eyes the conference with amusement.

Arnold says, “Yes, oil oil and more oil. The Iraqis burned almost 750 oil installments and still the country’s swimming in it. Any old Joe who’s working in that business, be it clean up, drilling, reconstruction, w

import, export, specialized or not, is getting richer by the millisecond!” He suddenly looks at me and my heart palpitates. “I hear the import business is glowing. Paxton, what do you import again?”

“Refrigeration equipment.”

“And how is that going?”

I nod my head and slide my hands into my denim pockets. “Well.”

“Wonderful, wonderful, old chum. Here’s what I want you to do.”

I don’t speak. I’m afraid of tripping on my own toes because I don’t know anything about business. I’ve been an English teacher for a decade. My papers are forged. My agent doesn’t know it. No one knows it. So I stand, waiting for the proposition, hoping that I’ll be able to respond without raising anyone’s suspicions.

Arnold sits down on his fat knees in the middle of the crowd, snaps chubby palms together and cries, “Employ me!”

Everybody laughs. They don’t see it, but I exhale shakily.

“Fag?” says a short British man with cropped hair and elliptical glasses. He stands to offer me a cigarette. I thank him and refuse politely.

“Paxton? You don’t smoke?” says Arnold who has to push himself up wobbly. “Well, well, see here, this changes everything. We can’t work together now. Go on, don’t look at me with those green puppy eyes. Nopes. Nu uh. It won’t work. Tis’ over. Now be a lad, Matty and hand me one of those.” He pulls a cigarette from a red Marlborough pack, wraps an arm around the short British man and says, “How do you do, partner?”

Just then, Arnold’s agent enters the lobby—a gregarious Kuwaiti man in national attire, wearing a white ankle-length, loose-fitting garment resembling a robe, and crossed on his head is a white head-cloth held in place by a double ring of black cord. “Shisalfa, what’s going on? Why do I hear your voice all the way from Fintas?” He comes up to the congregation smiling.

“I’m asking for alternative employment.”

“Arnold my friend, you are such a drama queen. I’ve found the best solution for our predicament. We’re subcontracting! Now put out that cigarette and follow me.”

Before pulling the gargantuan British man away, I approach the Kuwaiti agent.

“Excuse me!”

“Oh, hey, how do you do? I said put it out Arnold. Abdullah Al-Mullah quit smoking. We don’t want to stress him out when we’re looking to fleece him. Right, what can I do for you?”

I hand him the sepia and ask, “Do you happen to know where I might find this man?”

“Oh! That’s the Persian!” He clicked his fingers and knotted his eyebrows. “If I’m not mistaken, his family still lives in Khaitan.”

“His family?”

“Well, yes, he’s left ages ago.”

“Left?”

The Kuwaiti agent hands me my photo back and crosses his head-cloth again. “Yes. Arnold, for the love of Allah, put that lemonade down, it’s getting late.” Then he turns to me and says, “Look. I can drop you in Khaitan. Ask around, his neighbors will know more. Although they are Persians, they all took part in the resistance during the invasion, you know?”

No. I don’t know what he is mumbling about, but I accept the lift

with pleasure.

He drops me next to a grocery store and drives off. I crack a smile

at the faded image of a platinum blonde Madonna on the billboard. I

walk in with the daguerreotype in my hand.

“Hello?”

“Hello! Hello! You American?”

“Erm, yes. I wanted to ask whether…”

“Come in! Come in! What you want? Free! Take Anything!”

“Thanks, but I actually wanted to ask…”

“No! No! You must take! Water? Chocolate? Look! American chewing

gum! Eh? You want, eh?”

I show him the photo and say, “Man. This man, you know?”

“Free Kuwait! Eh? You soldier?”

“No. I businessman.” I bite my tongue. No matter, I think. If it gets the

job done, I’ll speak like him.

He’s a petit Indian, clean-shaven, with oily hair, a green checkered

shirt and brown cotton trousers. “I stay here during invasion. Bad.

Bad. Very bad Iraqis. They make horrible. Everything horrible.”

I nod. I point at the photograph again. “This man. Do you see?” I point

to my eyes. “You see him?”

Suddenly the strangest thing happened: a collision, like a gust of wind

almost breaks my ribcage. An internal hurricane. My vision swivels,

twists into a cyclone of images. My heart races, pounds, threatens

to burst out of my chest. I panic. I shut my eyes, part my lips and

inhale. What’s going on? When I next open my eyes, I see myself. I

see my back, bending, supporting myself on the merchant’s shoulder.

He’s trying to help me, the real me, to stand erect. I cannot hear him

speak. I’m looking at myself from the doorway instead of looking at

the floor, were the real me is facing.

Just as abruptly, my vision changes. Floor. Indian man. Back of the

store. I pivot. In the doorway, stands a striking woman. Young, maybe

in her twenties, wearing a white veil, forest green skirt that flows up

to her ankles, beige shirt with orotund, pink flowers embroidered over

her left sleeve. Her skin’s the colour of pale copper, her large brown

eyes blink, moist with dew. She leans on the door-handle, breathing

heavily. Her chest slowly rising and falling.

I take one unstable move in her direction…she bolts.

“Hey!” I yell and scramble after her.

“Stop! Come back!” I run, driven by foreign thoughts and emotions.

I’m faster. She’s struggling with her loose cloth—but I don’t reach her,

for I am impeded by a group of Kuwaiti teenagers who knock me to

the ground.

“Move, and die,” says one of them. ww

Abhaneri is a small town village, situated at a distance of 95 km from Jaipur, on Jaipur-Agra road. The place is popular

for the amazing ‘Baoris’ (step wells) and Harshat Mata Temple. The village of Abhaneri is believed to be established by the King Raja Chand. Originally Abhaneri was named as Abha Nagri, which means the city of brightness, but due to mispronunciation of the term, it is changed to the present name.

In the present day, this city of brightness is in ruins; still it attracts tourists from across the globe. Abhaneri is prominent for ‘Baoris’, which are the unique invention of the natives for harvesting rain water. Amongst the other step wells, Chand Baori is the most popular one. This colossal step well is located in front of the Harshat Mata Temple. Chand Baori is one of India’s deepest and largest step wells. The huge tank with delicate carvings is certainly delightful to the eyes.

Step wells are the unique concept of India. These big tanks were used as cool places of resort and water reservoir in parched days. It was a ritual to wash hands and feet before visiting the temple. Adjoining the Chand Baori, there is a temple, dedicated to Harshat Mata. This temple serves as the other tourist attraction of Abhaneri. Raised during the 10th century, the wrecks of the temple still boast of the architectural and sculptural styles of ancient India.

Harshat Mata is considered to be the goddess of joy and happiness. As per the beliefs, the goddess is always cheerful, who imparts her joy and happiness to the whole village. The temple is worth visiting for its amazing architecture and that too, which belongs to the medieval India. Abhaneri has a glorious past and this hoary magnetism of the place, attracts tourists to its threshold, from all over the world. Legends say that ghosts build it in one night and that it has so many steps to make it impossible for someone to retrieve a coin once it’s been dropped in the well.

I entered the Palms Beach Club and sat in the waiting lounge waiting for Manal and the other girls to finish the training so

we can sit and chat later on! At 7:45 a tiny little girl entered the waiting lounge wearing her Karate outfit, I knew it was her, so I went to introduce myself and she had that beautiful smile once she saw me ^_^

We went outside near the pool area to meet the other girls! I’ve met half of them while we were on the way and the other girls joined us later along with their instructor Senpai Ali Al-Manaseer. As we all sat around the table near the pool, I asked Manal to introduce herself and the other girls to me and they were: Manal Al Sharifi-28 yrs (Mashallah she looks younger) , Mona Al Sharifi-18 yrs, Abeer Al Sharifi-14 yrs , Gadeer Al Sharifi-10 yrs, Dana Al Tataan-12 yrs, Mariam Al-Ebaidly-25 yrs, Farah Al-Shammari-18 yrs, latifa Al-Shammari-14 yrs, Maram Al-Shammari-12 yrs.

As I began asking them the regular questions such as “Why did you chose Kyokushin Karate?”, Manal replied “Girls are not feeling safe these days and things have changed a lot, we need to know how to defend ourselves, since even the elders are not being respected anymore in the streets”. To tell

you the truth, she was right! We read such incidents in the newspapers every now and then! These days nobody is feeling safe and a girl has to make sure that she can go out with confidence that she has the power of defending herself!

“what else Manal? What did Kyokushin teach you?” I asked. “More than that, it made my life more disciplined, now I have control over the routine of my life! Made me more courageous and confident after I’ve been a very shy girl for a long time! I’m learning how to deal with every day situations with more confident” Manal explained.

I was straight forward with the girls regarding my questions. “Don’t you think Karate in genera; lessens from you femininity?”. “Not at all, it depends on the girl herself and how she has been raised! And how she can implement the karate attitude in her life” Manal said. “because you know, some girls look a little bit masculine” I wondered. “Yup, some are but after all, it’s the girl who does that to herself not karate” Manal explained further. All of the girls sitting around me were very feminine and cute at the same time.

I’ve always thought about their parents and what did they think about their daughters joining this kind of sport. “Not at all, we got our parents’ full support from the beginning. My dad used to be an athlete, so he encouraged us all” Manal said. “ what about the pain, is it really painful?” I asked Manal. “at first, yes but then you get used to it and your body becomes stronger everytime”

A Taekwondo girl called Abrar AlFahad-25 yrs, joined us later on. She has just joined Kyokushin karate. We were all talking about the karate girls in Kuwait and where do they stand! It was a very tense subject because somehow they feel neglected and nobody cares about them . . . But I guess that’s another issue that I can’t talk about now J

We finished talking about Kyokushin karate and went into talking about girly stuff, I don't think it is suitable for publishing J

I arrived at the Palms Beach Club to attend the training of the girls and also the test of 3 girls to gain the blue belt. And also to take some photos . . . it was very aggressive and strong training and fight . . . I will leave you with the photos to enjoy!

And she was not this killer’s only victim. The hunt for her murderer leads Alex and his girlfriend, Detective Brianna Stone, to a place where every fantasy is possible, if you have the credentials to get in. Alex and Bree are soon facing

down some very important, very protected, very dangerous people in levels of society where only one thing is certain--they will do anything to keep their secrets safe. As Alex closes in on the killer, he discovers evidence that points to the unimaginable-

-a revelation that could rock the entire world. With the unstoppable action, unforeseeable twists, and edge-of-your-seat suspense that only a James Patterson thriller delivers, I, Alex Cross is the master of suspense at his sharpest and best.

In Have a Little Faith, Mitch Albom offers a beautifully written story of a remarkable eight-

year journey between two worlds--two men, two faiths, two communities--that will inspire readers everywhere.

Albom’s first nonfiction book since Tuesdays with Morrie, Have a Little Faith begins with an unusual request: an eighty-two-year-old rabbi from Albom’s old hometown asks him to deliver his eulogy.

Feeling unworthy, Albom insists on understanding the man better, which throws him back into a world of faith he’d left years ago. Meanwhile, closer to his current home, Albom becomes involved with a Detroit pastor--a reformed drug dealer and convict--who preaches to the poor and homeless in a decaying church with a hole in its roof. Moving between their worlds, Christian and Jewish, African-American and white, impoverished and well-to-do, Albom observes how these very different

men employ faith similarly in fighting for survival: the older, suburban rabbi embracing it as death approaches; the younger, inner-city pastor relying on it to keep himself and his church afloat. As America struggles with hard times and people turn more to their beliefs, Albom and the two men of God explore issues that perplex modern man: how to endure when difficult things happen; what heaven is; intermarriage; forgiveness; doubting God; and the importance of faith in trying times. Although the texts, prayers, and histories are different, Albom begins to recognize a striking unity between the two worlds--and indeed, between beliefs everywhere. In the end, as the rabbi nears death and a harsh winter threatens the pastor’s wobbly church, Albom sadly fulfills the rabbi’s last request and writes the eulogy. And he finally understands what both men had been teaching all along: the profound comfort of believing in something bigger than yourself.
