Welcome to the 2011–12 TUC Education programme for union professionals, bringing quality, accreditededucation to union officers through the very best of our partnership with further education.

The training and development of union professionalsremains a priority for the TUC and this is our eighth year of delivery since the closure of the NationalEducation Centre in 2005. The programme has grown exponentially since then, with around one in three trade union professionals taking part in the training offer each year. In 2010, 908 unionprofessionals from 35 unions participated in a course, half of them women.

Much of the training takes place in London, as inprevious years, but regional programmes are running in Scotland, the Midlands, South West, Yorkshire andthe Humber and the North West, making the prospect of an expanded, regional offer – which can be accessedclose to home – a reality.

The courses are complemented by online support forunion professionals through an interactive websitewww.unionprofessionals.org.uk. This site is anessential tool for busy union officials and we welcomesuggestions for improvements.

This year we are again offering our online courses for union professionals with options for diplomacourses in Employment Law and Contemporary TradeUnionism, together with a shorter course, Introductionto Contemporary Trade Unionism.

TUC Education is committed to providing the bestpossible service for union officials. Please make full useof this booklet and its contents and let us know whatyou think.

Yours sincerely

Brendan Barber TUC General Secretary

Course outlinesEach course has an outline that covers who the course is for, how long it is, and what key elements of knowledge and skills are covered. If there is a cost – usually the courses are free – this is also stated.

Dates and locationsCourse dates are shown for each region, by date, on pages 17–20.

‘On request’ coursesThe programme also lists ‘on request’ courses. Thesecourses are not scheduled within the programme butmay be run where a union has a requirement for thecourse and enough participants to make it viable. To make a request contact the national or regionalTUC Education office – contact details are on page 22.

Course tutors and materialsThe professional development programme brings high quality, accredited education and training to union officers locally, through the best of the TUC’spartnership with further education.

The programme is delivered by TUC trained tutors who are experienced trade unionists and professionallyqualified. TUC Education develops and providesmaterials for all courses and materials are regularlyreviewed and revised with input from tutors, policyexperts and unions.

AccreditationWe have been working hard for some years to get the learning achievements of union staff appropriatelyrecognised. Three years ago, TUC Education andNOCN took part in testing and trialling the TUCEducation programme within the Qualifications andCredit Framework (QCF). The QCF is a new way ofrecognising achievement through the award of creditfor units and qualifications. It provides flexible routes to gaining full qualifications, and enablesqualifications to be achieved in small steps.

The TUC programme is now located within the QCF with new arrangements for qualifications. All learnersregistered on TUC Education programmes will be eligible to work towards qualifications.

This means that all credits achieved on courses willbuild towards awards, certificates and diplomas, issued through our awarding body, NOCN. Tutors will advise how to build credits into a recognised trade union qualification.

CostsThe majority of courses offered here are free of charge to unions. Where it has been necessary to passon costs (as with the Union Women Professionals’Summer School, or the Lights, Camera, Action course, for example) this is clearly indicated in the coursedescriptions. More information on charges for bespokeprogrammes can be obtained through the relevant TUCRegional Education Officer or from Martin Hegarty [email protected].

Your feedbackThis union professional development programme has been designed with the assistance of many unionofficers. We welcome your views on the programme tohelp us continue to ensure it is relevant and practical. If there is something missing from the programme, please tell Liz Rees at [email protected].
