Drowned in sound: how listening to music hinders learning

I recently came across this article published in the Guardian Australia (14/3/18), in which the author explored research into the effects of listening to music while studying. With the proliferation of Smartphones and the ease of downloading music, young people certainly seem to spend a great deal of time with earphones in their ears. It strikes me that many more students nowadays study and/or complete homework listening to music, often citing to the adults in their lives that “it helps me study”.

Given that our students are not permitted to use their phones in class, students at Bethlehem are not given the opportunity to do so during lessons. I imagine that many parents are unsure of whether in fact music does facilitate better learning for their child’s study habits in light of the research.

“There are some benefits to listening to music while performing certain tasks. It can be quite motivating and it can improve mood (listening to your favourite song tends to make people

smile, for example). But it does not help people learn new or complex material.”

A study conducted by researchers from Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2014 found that the previous research which had found that listening to music was conducive to learning was based on a “misconception” called the “Mozart effect”, where people performed better on a series of cognitive tasks after listening to 10 minutes of Mozart. Participants in these studies appeared to perform better in tests.

The author of the Guardian article, Bradley Busch, found that further research has since revealed this is not the case. While listening to music before a task can improve mood, listening to it while trying to learn something new tends not to help. This is because music – especially tunes with lyrics – can take up processing space. This conflicts with the material to be learned, effectively creating an obstruction in one’s memory.

The Cardiff University study found that students they tested rated the quiet environment (as opposed to the sample who listened to music) as less distracting and better for them. Yet, why do so many students continue to listen to music while working on school related tasks? Busch argues “perhaps they’re doing so out of habit, or they confuse what improves their mood with what leads to good revision, or it allev iates boredom. Perhaps it’s simply because everyone else is doing it.”

With the upcoming examinations and assessments in Term 4 for all year groups, it might be timely to think about downing the technology and trying to study in under the same conditions in which students complete an examination ie silence!

Vale Ms Ellen McGovern DLS Ashfield Assistant Principal

As many of you aware, we join with the DLSA Community and Sydney Catholic Schools in mourning the recent passing of Ms Ellen McGovern former Assistant Principal. Ms McGovern leaves behind her husband and four children whom she was very proud of and completely devoted to.

Ms McGovern had a deservedly proud and distinguished career in Catholic Education, holding many positions of responsibility and leadership roles in the school communities in which she served, including Casimir Catholic College and De La Salle Kingsgrove. She also worked in the SCS Southern Region Office as an Adviser. Ms McGovern was an exemplary teacher, a highly respected colleague, an outstanding educator, a woman of incredible intellect and an inspiration to everyone with whom she worked. She was also a very dear friend to me.

May eternal rest grant to her O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon her.

May she rest in peace, Amen.

From the Assistant Principal Cont... Dear Parents / Carers Re: Student Leave The College has become aware of entries being made by parents indicating that their daughter is going on Leave on their daughter's Compass attendance portal under Notes/Approvals. Parents are advised that it is College Policy when requesting Leave (whether it is for Travel, Special Event or other), that parents must apply for Leave in writing at least 2 weeks prior to the leave dates via a Letter of Leave Request to the Principal, Mrs Paula Bounds, stating your reason/s for Leave, the Leave dates and any other pertinent information. Entering the dates into Compass without sending a letter does not constitute a Leave Request. When parents enter absences on to Compass, these entries are for retrospective absences ie ones which have already taken place, not planned absences. Parents will be aware that the SCS Attendance Policy on Holiday/Travel Leave states that "parents should use the school holidays for travel and holidays" and avoid removing their child from school during term time where possible due to its impact in disrupting their child's learning. If the Leave request is 10+ days, your daughter will be given a formal Application for Leave form for you to complete and return to the College. This Form will be approved and processed by the Principal, Curriculum Coordinator, the relevant Year Coordinator and the Business Manager.

Re: Panadol Medication - Authority to Administer From Term 4, Bethlehem College will have a form available for Parents/Carers to complete to enable their daughter to be administered Panadol if she presents to Sick Bay, with symptoms such as a headache. The form requests, amongst other things, the dosage you are approving to be administered to your daughter, ie 1 or 2 tablets/capsules. The College requires written permission to administer Panadol so we have included a copy of this form with this Newsletter. It will also be available on the College website under Information for Parents / Notes & Forms. http://bethlehemcollege.nsw.edu.au/panadol-medication-authority-to-administer/ Please complete and return the form to the College Office if you consent to giving your daughter Panadol medication by the College Office as per the dosage specified by yourself. Should you have any questions, please contact the College Office.

Best wishes

We began with a spiritual Smoking Ceremony, where all of us gathered around the fire and told Uncle what we would like to discover throughout the day. After the ceremony we parted off into groups and participated in a variety of fun and informative activities. We learned about the origin and meaning of Ochre, we painted and threw Boomerangs, and we were taught different dances throughout the day. Towards the end of the day we sat in a circle and described to one of the mentors, Stu, about how we felt about the day in one word, all of us responded positively. To finish off the day we performed the dance we learnt in front of all the CaSPA Mentors and School Teachers. We all enjoyed the amazing Cultural day, and cannot wait for Goodjarga 2019. SPORTS CORNER....

MCCS RESULTS

What a term of representative sport! Bethlehem had shown their high standard sporting abilities in Soccer and Basketball with teams making it to the Grand Final in both sports. I am immensely proud of the efforts of all girls in these teams and the constant high quality coaching of their coaches: Ms Beaumont (Senior Basketball), Peter Lee (Junior Basketball) and Daniel Elaro (Junior Soccer). Once again a huge thank you to Irene Marinos (Senior Soccer) and Yvonne Taouk (Intermediate Basketball) for a great season with the teams. Below are the results of the final series, a definite action packed blockbuster. MCCS Basketball: Semi Final: Junior Team vs. St Patricks Won 25-15 Intermediate Team vs. Marist Sisters Woolwich Loss 33-20 Senior Team vs. Trinity Win 50-28 Grand Final: Junior Team vs. Catherine McAuley Loss 12-17 Senior Team vs. St Patricks Loss 37-38 The grand final games in Basketball were very close and both teams are to be congratulated for their efforts and representing the College with great skill and teamwork. MCCS Soccer: Semi Final: Junior Team vs. Catherine McAuley Win 1-0 Grand Final: Junior Team vs. Marist Sisters Woolwich Win 1 (3)-1 (0) Shootout

MCCS JUNIOR SOCCER 2018 PREMIERS! Bethlehem Won 1-1 (3-0 penalties) I want to formally congratulate the team for a fantastic 2018, MCCS Soccer season. To be able to reach the grand final, and to win, is such an outstanding achievement! However, I am most proud of the sportsmanship and the respect the team displayed towards their teammates, the opposition, referees, and coaches, all whilst remaining great competitors. As their coach, this was truly humbling to witness and I personally believe that these excellent qualities far outweigh any accolades that can be won. Bethlehem came up against Minor Premiers, Marist Sisters College, Woolwich; a team who proved to be ultimate competitors, whilst also achieving a great milestone of not having conceded a goal all season. Bethlehem knew very well that it was not going to be an easy task. Despite these very intimidating achievements by the competition favourites, the team managed to obtain a great sense of belief within themselves and a very strong desire to win.

The match itself was of high quality as both teams displayed good attacking and defensive efforts. Bethlehem got on the board mid way through the first half with a good strike by our leading goal scorer, Marguerite Kavvalos. Holding on to a 1-nil lead for the majority of the match was impressive, however, it was a huge task, as Woolwich continued to apply an immense amount of pressure. With just a few minutes remaining on the clock, it took a phenomenal strike by the opposition attacker to finally break through Bethlehem’s strong defence. Soon after, the final whist le blew and the match ended in a 1-all draw, leading both teams to battle it out in a nail biting golden goal extra time period. Extra time commenced, concluded and with still, no result! The only way to have distinguished these two competitive teams was through a penalty shoot out. To our advantage; experience, confidence and precision was on our side, as Marguerite Kavvalos, Emilia Georgellis and Jessica Lampasona took charge and helped bring home the 2018, MCCS Junior Soccer Premiership trophy to Bethlehem College! All the players should be very proud of their achievements this season, as is the whole Bethlehem community. Enjoy the title of being 2018 PREMIERS! Well done to the following students: Marguerite Kavvalos, Shani Torres, Emilia Georgellis, Niamh McMahon, Jessica Lampasona, Danielle Ali, Madonna Ayoub, Sarah Park, Chiara Camporeale, Juliana Varon - Sanchez, Ella Nicholls, Olivia Ivanac, Sophia Trovato, Violet Powter, Georgia Alexakis, Jacinta Petracca. Regards, Mr Elaro & Miss Marinos
