WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO DO…

• You will need to research and create an assignment, showing understanding of this unit.

• You will need to include pictures, present your work neatly and to a high standard (preferably on computer).

• You are allowed to cut pictures from magazines and newspapers, or from posters.

• You need to identify where you gathered your information from, make reference to authors, web sites, books etc. remember to create a bibliography at the end of your assignment identifying these sources.

• Your assignment should have a front sheet, index, introduction, body, conclusion and bibliography.

• There are many different types of salons in the industry, who will employ a skilled workforce, can you identify these salons?

• Create a table, spidergram, or list salons you have

researched, include images.

Blow dry Shampooing and styling the hair, stylist uses a hand held hairdryer , tools and products to shape the hair.

Shampoo and set Shampooing the hair, using product to give the style some body and hold, placing rollers in the hair to form a curl, placing the client under a hooded dryer to set the hair into shape, dress the hair into

desired result.

Colour Varies from root application colour to full head of foils, product choice will very depending on the desired result.

Perm Shampooing the hair and placing perming rods in

the hair following a pattern, this process permanently changes the structure of the hair and the curl will have to grow out.

Hair up Styling the hair from dry into a dressed look , usually ornamentation will be added to enhance the style.

Gent’s cut Cutting gent’s hair into shape using clippers, scissors and thinning scissors, usually a dry cut.

Roles Description

Salon junior Cleaning, shampooing, removal of colour/ perm,

answering the telephone, making appointments,

dealing with payments, supporting a stylist, learning skills.

Hair stylist Dealing with clients, carrying out services the client

would like, after care advice, selling products.

Barber Cutting and styling gent’s hair, beards, shaving.

Beauty therapist Dealing with client’s, giving treatments and after care

advice, selling products.

Make-up artist Creating a finished look as required by the client,

advising client on product choice and application,

selling products.

Nail technician Manicure, pedicure, acrylic and gel nails, providing a

service and dealing with clients, offer after care advice

and sell products.

Salon manager A person who is appointed to oversee the running of the

salon on a daily basis.

Receptionist First contact clients have with the salon, first impressions,

needs to be polite, efficient and able to communicate

well with clients, a bilingual receptionist would be

preferred.

Roles Description

Salon owner Owns the salon may be a hairdresser or beauty therapist who works at the salon.

Colour technician Application of all colouring products and techniques.

Session stylist Expert in styling.

Product technician Orders and monitors stock control in the salon dealing with manufacturers.

Manufacturers sales rep Sales person for a company who visits establishments to promote products and services.

Spa therapist Therapist in a spa, offering alternative therapy.

Beauty consultant Gives expert advice on all beauty treatments.

Trainer / tutor Training and teaching in a salon or college environment.

Assessor Assessing stylist’s competency at fulfilling their role.

You will need to research in to the meaning of the

understand what the employer expects from an

employee in employment (research on your own)
