    LETTER FROM THE FOUNDERS

What is UNDO? This is a question with no definite answer. UNDO-Ordinary is a lifestyle: a fitness pop-up, a training platform, a mash-up of culture, and sweat. We are the exclamation point behind strength, power, and substance. We are street athletes embracing fashion through our physique. But what does this all really mean?

Picture a pendulum swinging for eternity. Each sway of the frictionless pivot builds momentum for the next move. Inspired by this structure, we asked ourselves:

What can we become if we stop interrupting ourselves?

Truth was written for UNDO-Ordinarys co-founder Nai Vasha while on a six-mile run across the Williamsburg Bridge three years ago.It was Vashas first long run, her first attempt at un-locking full potential through the gift of sweat. It was a challenge, and like every other obstacle attempting to obstruct her path - she demolished it. She refused the interruption and let her pendulum swing. The ordinary motion would have been to stop, find her phone, take a selfie, and post as if she reached a new milestone to suffice the social germ-pool. The ordinary thing would have been to say I will do this tomorrow, which used to be a broken record of habitual procrastination. The ordinary thing to do was to continue the downward spiral of bad decision imposed by her own ignorance and irresponsibility.

While vacationing for her first marathon in Hawaii, Vasha teamed up with former corporate lawyer and ultra-marathoner Robin Arzon to create a new platform for street athletes. Arzon left a position as a social media writer and producer for Nike Women to launch a fitness apparel line, continue a sports journalism career, teach indoor cycling, and coach runners.

Collectively WE put a stop to the never ending pendulum of bullshit and started a new motion towards fitness, nutrition, and sustainability.

There was no other option, thus, we had to UNDO-Ordinary.

This magazine is a visual representation of our culture, our community. This is every bead of creativity, tact, and sweat bottled up and served to you.

    Youre welcome.

Its no secret that music is my life. As a DJ, TV host, artist, and many more hats that you probably dont see, everything I do involves music. Whether its touring internationally, curating music for brands or producing a new album, music surrounds all I do.

Before music became the precedent, I was an athlete. A junior tennis star. I began playing tennis at age 9 in Northeast Philadelphia and continued to train and compete until age 17 - the year I choose to quit tennis and pursue music. I would train 4-5 times a week, then compete on the weekends. That was my life for many years. At age 12, I was ranked #1 in the Tri-State.

The marriage between athleticism, discipline, and drive with music is something I can speak on. Here are a few of my tips on music and how it can influence you no matter if you are an artist or athlete!

fAr left 2001. Age 14. The Middle School First Singles began.rigHt toP 1996. Age 9. When I first started playing tennis in Northeast Philadelphia.rigHt bottom 1997. Age 10. JAzz MUsIC Is GREAT FOR

CONCENTRATIONRemember in high school when we learned how

listening to classical music helps when doing math? Well most of us arent sitting around doing math. We are on our computers all day designing, directing, emailing and multitasking. Being a DJ, I cant listen to music with lyrics while concentrating on business. I get too distracted and my ear automatically zones in on the song. However, Ive found jazz music to be the perfect background music as I am still able to focus.

    1

    CONFIDENCE Is kEY FOR CREATIVITY

Whether youre an artist looking for new song material, or an athlete trying to re-strategize their game, you have to own your confidence to think creatively. You cant have any fear; you cant be afraid of mistakes. Creativity is all about pushing yourself into the unknown, breaking past all you know to discover something greater. Allow yourself to be confident in your new thoughts.

lONGEVITYAs artists / musicians, we tend to obsess over our

craft for long hours, maybe without eating, sleeping, or traveling all the time. Its not to say that musicians in the past havent created amazing material while neglecting their bodies. Its also fact that most of them passed away before the age of 35. Burning out is real. No matter what, neglecting your body at a young age will not end well. Balance in your art, health, relationships and life will ensure longevity. It may not be easy, but if youd like to live a long healthy life, its necessary.

Celebrity trainer Kira Stokes knows a thing or two about sweat. A leader in the fitness industry, and creator of the Stoked Method, UNDO sits down with Kira to talk pushing boundaries, smashing limits, and how she got those abs!

U: You created the STOKED METHOD. What does it mean to GET STOKED, both as a fitness methodology and lifestyle brand? KS: As a fitness methodology, getting STOKED means getting completely fired up through working out. It means pushing yourself beyond your limits. Striving to be your best. Immersing yourself in your workout and working your body to full exhaustion. Breaking through barriers. Finding new levels of fitness and ultimately being the best YOU that you can be. When an athlete gets STOKED they are not told what to do, but they are taught and educated on proper form and technique so they can take the knowledge they gain during a sweat session and be proactive with it.

As a lifestyle brand, getting STOKED is about living life to the fullest through a commitment to fitness. It is about making fitness the focal point of your life and creating a lifestyle that revolves around it. There is no finish line....just an unwavering commitment to strive to be a better version of you every day. The sense of community that has naturally evolved from the bond forged in sweat is truly life changing for STOKED Athletes.

U: Take us through an average day for you, from teaching classes to eating to getting in your own workout.KS: My typical day begins around 4:45am. The first hour or so of my day is my Princess Time. I love the peace and quiet in the early morning hours. I use this time to prepare for my day, plan my strategy for each client or class I am going to teach, answer my email, begin my social media posts for the day, and I might even get some on-line shopping done!

I usually leave home around 5:50. If it is a city day, I jump on the train and head in.

GET STOKEDwRITER robin ArZonPHOTOGRAPHER rAcHel neville

During the train ride, I continue my social media posts and messages, answer emails ,and generally just chill a bit because the minute I hit the city, I am running full speed.

On Mondays, I get into the city around 7am and either train a client or grab a quick hour of cardio. I then teach classes all morning before heading to Central Park for my STOKED Fit Camp at Bethesda Fountain. Bethesda Fountain is one of my favorite places in the entire city. We are usually the biggest tourist attraction going. People are taking pictures, screaming things at us like, holy shit, never seen so many ripped women in my life! or they just stop and stare. It is a trip. I love it.

After Central Park, I head back to the West Side to train two of my celebrity clients at their home gyms. Its always nice to have an entire gym to train a client in private. It keeps my client focused on working his/her butt off! No distractions, no excuses... just pure work.

I then head back to Reebok and get a solid workout in. Usually my workout involves a mix of intense cardio, often in the form of a run followed by STOKED Circuits (jump rope, plyos, etc.) and weights/functional training. However, no two workouts I do are the same. I am a cross-training machine, always challenging my body in different ways. I also love my personal workout time because it allows me to create new moves for my classes. I am my own test athlete!

I then finish up the day with three more classes at Reebok. My last class ends at 7:30pm. I race to Grand Central to catch the 8:10pm train home (if I am lucky). Long, long day but - oh so exhilarating!

I eat when I get a free moment, more often than not on my way to and from a destination.I pack STOKED Snacks the night before so I am never left empty handed. My meals are more like snacks than actual meals. Ranging from 150-200 calories at a time. But, I pretty much have something to eat every 90-minutes or so. You must feed your metabolism to keep it running at an optimal level. I need quite a bit of quality fuel to keep going at my max.

Some examples of STOKED Snacks: 1. Quinoa with mixed vegetables (often first thing in the morning)2. Grilled chicken breast 3. Hard-boiled eggs with hummus (take

most the yolk out, its like a healthy deviled egg)4. Oatmeal with almonds or walnuts5. Egg white omelette with spinach and avocado6. Kale salad7. Protein smoothie. Im obsessed with Vega Sport Performance Protein Powder. Both vanilla and chocolate. I use 1/2 unsweetened vanilla almond milk, 1/2 water as a base, a couple strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, chia seeds, and macca powder. I have a protein smoothie religiously within 30-minutes of every one of my personal workouts.

U: Your abs are next level. Whats the number one thing people can do to tone their core?KS: People need to cross-train their core performing dynamic movements for what I consider the powerhouse of the body. Crunches alone will not get you results. I teach clients to always mind your muscle. Put your brainpower into the muscle groups you are focusing on. This very much applies to the core as often times people just go through the motions of abdominal work rather than truly allowing their body and mind to connect. Planks (and variations of planks) are an essential at strengthening the core, as are c-curves static holds. Our core is involved in every single movement we perform, even standing still. So, draw the navel towards the spine all the time!

U: Whats the most common mistake you see people make in spin or STOKED Series classes, and whats the best thing you see people doing? KS: In general, I notice people taking breaks not necessarily when they need them, but when workouts get super challenging, often times out of habit. Those are bench mark moments in a STOKED Series class. When you think you have nothing left to give; thats the good stuff. Thats what changes your body and wakes up your spirit. Embrace the challenge and get uncomfortable with your workout. Another general mistake, as I mentioned above, people just going through the motions rather than really engaging.

One of the best things I see people doing is showing up! When I see athletes really watching their bodies as they workout and making the form adjustments I always give during class. I often say, take the cues I give and apply them to your body, rather than just hearing them.

U: What do you do for your own fitness

needs? KS: I really and truly love to workout. Although I know I should, I really never take a day off from getting my sweat on. I feel extremely lucky that Ive been able to turn what has been a passion of mine, since I was a little girl, into a successful career. My work is my passion. Every day my schedule is different as I split my time between Westchester and the City. Although I would love to be able to crush my personal workouts first thing in the morning, that is prime time for clients and classes. I have learned to enjoy working out at all hours of the day. 2pm may not be the time of day when your body necessarily wants to workout, but its all mental. I consider it another challenge of the workout to make it happen and give 110% effort. As a fitness professional, if you cant motivate yourself, you have no business motivating others. I also feel changing the time of day when you conquer a workout is another way to keep the body guessing and shock it into stellar shape.

My last meal on earth would be pizza or pasta...carb up.

People would be surprised to know that I was a rockstar clarinetist from 4th grade on; once I hit Boston College I sadly put that talent to bed. However, I put as much time and effort into developing my skill as a musician as I did being an athlete growing up. One more fun fact, I grew up with an obstacle course in my backyard. My father literally turned nature into a playground/gym in the woods behind our home. He built balance beams that ran from tree to tree, some parallel to the ground, some ascending/descending. Shipping rope connected trees and a real trapeze allowed me to set my sights high and reach for the stars! My love of bodyweight training (now STOKED Primal) was born in my backyard.

Number one track on my iTunes playlist is:This is a tough one as there are many I use to pump myself up for a workout. Sirius by Feenixpawl vs. The Alan Project, is one that folks may not know about that gets me fired up. My forever favorite, I Will Wait by Bloombox and Sam Feldt remix, takes me somewhere amazing on a run. Pumpin Blood by NONONO, is no doubt perfect for a workout, Hangin On by Sigma Remix, helps me nail sprints.

    TOgETHER, wE aRE a MOvEMENT.

Some of the biggest issues that come up in relationships, regardless of the genders involved, are: trust, commitment, communication, and vulnerability. These are some of the hardest challenges to overcome because the give and take is so intangible. Once you get into the habit of second guessing your partner, it is almost impossible to break it. Not only because you are trying to figure out your own issues, but it is also nearly impossible to know what is going on with the other person. Even when trying couples therapy, it can lead to the same cyclic conversations and, therefore, lead nowhere. Words can ignite emotions making it difficult to hear what is being said.

Acroyoga is a type of yoga that mixes Thai massage, traditional yoga, and acrobatics; it is often referred to as partner yoga. Working with a partner is a good idea for yoga or any physical activity for that matter. What makes Acroyoga unique is that you are aligning a mind and body connection, not only to calm and center yourself, but also to achieve synchronicity with your partner. As you progress towards each position, you must be aware of your own movements and constantly maintain contact with your significant other. The two roles are the flyer, person being supporting and elevated, and the base, person supporting the flyer. Do you recall doing trust falls? You may have played this game during summer camp as a team building exercise? This is like that, but with yoga.

    wRITER mAceo PAisleYIllUsTRATOR soPHiA cHAng

    undo. ART OF lIVING. FITNEss

The movements range in difficulty and they each require different skill sets. Some positions require the base participant to be flexible, and others positions would need them to be strong. Conversely, the flyer might have to balance themselves or rely on the base to keep them in the air. Suitable for all ages and body types, these series of movements can either be routine or improvised. What are constant in successful pairings are the characteristics between the two participants.

  • 2121

COMMITMENT The first move before getting into any position is for both participants to agree upon the same destination. The goal is to get from one place to the next, all the while getting there as safely as possible. You must commit to bringing your best self to the pairing so that you may ensure that you are both in a comfortable place.

TRUST Once that initial commitment is made, you must trust that your partner has your best interests at heart. The beauty in Acroyoga is that the poses and transitions increase in difficulty as with progression. You cant just skip to an advanced state without establishing a solid foundation first. You must perform at a pace comfortable for both the flyer and base, such that all movement is uniform between both parties. This is how the two participants develop trust in one another. Your ability to perform as a pair will increase exponentially, and your trust as partners will grow.

COMMUNICaTION If the flyer feels like they are going to fall, then it is their responsibility to say, I feel like I am falling. The flyer needs to communicate their need for support to their base partner. Like the flyer, the base needs to let the flyer know My hand is slipping. You have to be honest about what is going on. You learn to be open to accepting the other persons truth. If the flyer is not very flexible, there are certain positions that may be uncomfortable, and others that are just downright painful. Similarly, if the base is not strong enough to support the flyer in a position, the couple is not ready to be in that state. The two can only perform at a level where BOTH participants are comfortable.

vULNERaBILITY Fear is invariably going to come into play, not only for the flyer, but also for the person that has to support them. You are forced to confront your own insecurities and fears with another person there to witness it. If the base tenses up and grips the flyers body because they are afraid, it can cause an injury. If the flyer reacts too quickly then someone could easily be hurt by an accidental punch or kick that was, simply, a reflex. We must be open to the possibility of being hurt; all the while doing everything we can to ensure the other person is taken care of. The selflessness, is at times, the glue that holds the stick.

What happens as a result of these connections is that the flyer will receive the thrill of accomplishment. The base will vicariously revel in that joy as a supporting part of another persons growth. When everything lines up, it is possible for both people to click, and find a harmony that may last an instant or an hour. It is that harmony that we are really searching for in our relationships, and in intercourse.

Zen, a meditative moment achieved from practicing traditional yoga, can be shared between two people. Male or female, straight or gay, it is symbolic of the possibility within all of us to connect. In Acroyoga you have a tangible means to communicate these principles and see results. You can also see the truth of two peoples incompatibility. Acroyoga is the physical mirror that reflects your position shifts as mental changes. The same laws of gravity apply to keep us from falling. We need support. When you fall in love, there should be someone to catch you.

ON some realness, meditation is the truth. Ive always been much more turned up than zen, but meditation has changed me like on a cellular level.Ultramarathons have taught me the art of visualization and mindfulness. Sports psychologists and spiritual leaders alike know the power of the mind. Meditation can not only change your brain matter, but it can also alleviate stress, anxiety, and the pervasive mind chatter we all battle on a daily basis.

Trust me. Im no zen master. I still curse like a trucker, lose my cool, and have irrationally negative thoughts. Meditation is called a practice for a reason.

10 Newbie Meditation Tips:Do YOU and experimentTheres no wrong way to meditate. Its about establishing a regularity and a rhythm. There are so many different types of teachers, methods, and online communities to help your journey. Music? Religious talk? Mantras? Walking meditation? Candle meditation? TM? Vedic? Dabble in some research and see what works. There are as many styles of meditation as there are meditators.

Guided Meditation I love Gabrielle Bernsteins guided meditations. They are only 5-6 minutes. This helped me get started on the practice because I didnt feel like I was devoting too much time.

Apps like Simply Being are also recommended for some guided focus. You can select 5 to 20 minutes, from a selection of natures sounds, music, or a spoken guide.

Commit to 21 daysStudies show that doing something consistently for 21-days reinforces habit. Mindfulness is a practice and getting into the habit of waking up and meditating is helpful. If you fall off, theres always tomorrow.

Dont stress about itIve had many stops and starts with meditation. My inner monologue was often asking Am I doing this right? What am I having for lunch? What do I need to do today?

For me, meditation is not about nothingness, its about acknowledging what comes up and clearing my internal channel. Ive really found this to be a powerful tool in manifesting my passions and desires.

Start small with a few minutesMaybe youll be able to dive right into hour long meditations. Maybe you cant. I didnt. Even taking 3-minutes to walk and breathe is a start.

BreatheI have mini meditations all the time. Breathe in for 5-counts, hold it for 5 counts, and release for 5-counts. I literally do this whenever I see myself getting impatient, stressed, or negative. Its a practice used by the military to steady soldiers before battle. Powerful shit!

Let it goSome days will be better than others. Dont focus on daily practice! Just do the best you can every day, and then let it go.

Start the day off with intention first thingMeditating first thing in the morning helped me establish a practice. It also helped for me to do it before grabbing for my phone to check emails, tweets, instagram, etc. Silence the noise. We cant be turned up every second of the day.

Fake it til you make itYou might feel silly at first. I did. I found that going through the motions actually allowed me to believe in the breathing and mantras.

Dwell in possibilityYou can only have in your life what you believe is possible. For real!

During the cold, make sure you are drinking approximately 1/2 of your weight in ounces of water per day. This will help flush toxins through your system more readily. (e.g.: 150-lb person should drink 75-oz. of water.)

Schedule an appointment for a colonic hydrotherapy treatment! Gravity-based colon hydrotherapy is a gentle process that assists the body in recuperating from illness

    or other adverse conditions.

What is a natural remedy for sinus congestion and allergies?

Native Remedies InstaClear Sinus Relief: their nasal spray consists of all natural ingredients, the main one being horseradish!

DIY Natural Sinus Spray: Use a nasal spray bottle and add: pinch of sea salt, .05 ml of hydrogen peroxide (or 7 drops), and a pinch of baking soda, fill the rest with bottled water and shake to mix up ingredients.

Spray in nose when congestion occurs.

Use a Neti Pot. (A colonic for the nose! It washes out impurities from the sinuses.)

Use a Salt Inhaler. (Breathing in salt air cleanses the respiratory system.)

Aromatherapy Bath: Add eucalyptus oil and or a small amount of peppermint oil to a hot bath and soak for 20 min. Make an effort to do deep breathing while soaking.

Tabletop Aromatherapy: Boil a pot of water, sit at table with towel over your head and add 3-4 drops of eucalyptus oil to the pot of water. Breathe in the vapors, keeping your eyes closed so the diffused oils dont irritate them.

DIY Steam Room: Fill a spray bottle with water and eucalyptus oil (about 25 drops). Place a towel along the base of your bathroom door to seal the air in, and then turn on the shower to the hottest water possible. No need to go into shower. Just sit undressed in the bathroom, which is now your home sauna. Spray eucalyptus mixture into the air once steam has activated. Practice slow

ALL ABOUTPOWER PREVENTIONDid you know that gut health and your fitness potential are not mutually exclusive? Bottom Line: You have a say in your own well-being and you can independently create the health you dream of. Check out my natural remedy suggestions and get ready to experience a sparkling interior one that will result in a radiant and strong exterior for the rest of your life!

What are some of your suggestions for dealing with common colds?

Abstain from as much dairy, animal-based, and processed food as possible. These foods congest the system and slow down healing.

Drink 16-oz. warm water with lemon in the morning to alkalinize your system.

Drink fresh pressed vegetable juices (always while on an empty stomach) to assist in the replenishing of your alkaline pool and the strengthening of your immune system.

Get a massage or a preferred bodywork session! Shiatsu, Lymphatic Drainage, Swedish, Cranio Sacral, Thai Yoga Bodywork, etc. These all promote detoxification.

If you have a mini-trampoline jump on it for at least 7-minutes in the morning and at night. This activity increases the flow of lymphatic fluid and assists in cleansing the blood. You can reverse a sore throat in a day with lymphatic exercise.

deep breathing for about 5-min, or as long as you can tolerate. Sweating is also great for purging out toxins.

I am an avid runner. Do you have a natural remedy for muscle tension relief or general slow recovery after workouts?

Soak in a hot bath for 20-minutes using:

Epsom Salts (2 cups) or Table salt (whole container approx 26-oz.) with hydrogen peroxide (32-oz. bottle). *Do not mix the Epsom salt with the hydrogen peroxide, as it is believed that they cancel each other out. (Always rinse your body off after soaking.)

Essential Oils: doTERRA: Aromatouch Essential Oil Blend or Basil: A few drops applied with coconut oil directly to the areas of muscle tension.

How do I deal with indigestion such as gas, bloating, or reflux?

Buy a good quality plant-sourced digestive enzyme that you can take with your meals.

Rainbow Light Advanced Enzyme System. Sip any of the following herbal teas: Ginger, Peppermint, Fennel, Anise, Slippery Elm Bark (also available in lozenges and tablets.)

    Another Option:

Squeeze 1/4 or 1/2 fresh lemon in warm water and sip.

Stir a 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in warm water and sip.

Swallow a tablespoon of unprocessed aloe juice (Herbal Aloe Force or scoop out the gelatinous inside of a real aloe leaf if accessible and swallow or mix in blender with water.)

Essential Oil: doTERRA DigestZen Digestive Blend. A few drops can be added to drinking water.

How can I improve my running time and stamina in my work-outs?

Drinking fresh pressed vegetable juice on a regular basis helps to flush impurities from the cells thus allowing them to receive oxygen at a more efficient rate.

Less dairy means less cellular inflammation. Reduce your intake of cheese and heavy cream sauces, dairy beverages, etc. Use nut, seed, or rice milks instead.

Maintain a regular intake of vegetables rich in iron since this is the mineral that helps to transport oxygen to our blood cells. Some iron-rich foods are: sun dried apricots, dried figs, mulberries, spinach, raisins, Swiss chard, beets, leeks, and kale. A good supplement is Floradix Iron and Herbs.

How can I improve my immune system and circulation?

If you are an avid runner and suffer from cold limbs, you may find this next suggestion is not only helpful but also invigorating!

Lymphatic Dry Brushing is quick and easy and its also one of my own daily health regimen practices. This therapeutic skin brushing technique is performed with a natural bristle brush to stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid (also called the lymph) throughout the lymphatic system. The lymph carries waste from the tissue and then it returns to the bloodstream. The lymph transports the waste to the lymph nodes for proper flushing where debris, abnormal cells, and pathogens are cleaned out of the fluid. Since the dry brushing technique stimulates the flow of the lymph, which essentially is carrying waste out of the body, its easy to see how our immune system is the benefactor of this practice. The lymphatic system also helps to transport fatty acids from the intestines to the circulatory system.

The whole process can take 30- 60 seconds to complete and can be done daily and should be done before the skin is wet. Do not brush your skin when wet, as this tends to stretch it.

Dry Brushing Technique: I suggest using your lymphatic dry brush, (Yerba Prima is a great brand) while standing in the shower before you turn the water on. Starting at the soles of the feet, simply brush up your limbs and down your torso, using two brisk brush strokes, always brushing towards your heart. After brushing your legs, you can brush your arms starting at your fingertips. Brush down your back and also address your neck and gut. Avoid your face. You may see a powdery substance coming off your skin. This is cellular waste or more commonly known as mucous. You may feel a great rush of heat and energy in your body. Notice how awake you feel by adding dry brushing to your morning routine.

Take warm baths at night with essential oils of bergamot, black pepper, and/or ginger (or ginger powder).

    undo. ART OF lIVING. NUTRITION

Stephen Cheuk, founder of S10 training adds science to your workout. Your output in the gym only goes as far as how you fuel. The multi-vitamin is the most diverse vitamin one can add to their diet. These supplements provide all the basic micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) that the body needs. Over 50 essential nutrients have been recommended for daily intake to help eradicate deficiency and disease. In the past decade, science and healthcare have been paying closer attention to the important roles of supplements for daily balance.

Here are Stephens Top Five Supplements for Athletes:1 .BCAAs (Branch Chain Amino Acids)

Made up of 3 essential amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine. They make up 35% of all muscle tissue. The more found in muscles, the more it slows down the breakdown of muscles and prevents muscle loss.

Enhances protein synthesisSupports hormone balance during intense trainingReduces sorenessPrevents muscle loss

    2. Probiotic

These aid in digestion and absorption of nutrients in the gut. The healthy bacteria improves gastrointestinal health, prevents allergies, liver disease and decreases inflammation. Most neurotransmitters are found in your gut, these are the chemicals involved in brain function and mood healthy gut equals healthy mind.

    3. Magnesium

Americans are chronically deficent in this mineral. It is one of the most improtant nutrients needed by the human body. Used around 300 essential biochemical reactions like protein synthesis, calcium absortion, testosterone production, insulin sensitivity and the regulation of the sympathetic nervous system. Its also a great muscle relaxant and aids in sleep.

    4. Fish Oil

A little about cell membrane health: EPA and DHA ensure that cell membranes remain healthy. This means that the membranes are flexible and contain larger numbers of insulin receptors that are more receptive and responsive to circulating insulin. This results in a decrease in a cells fat storage ability.

Fish oils diminish C-reactive proteins, a newly identified risk factor associated with various inflammatory diseases, including atherosclerosis, angina, coronary heart disease, heart attack, stroke, congestive heart failure, and diabetes. The DHA fraction of the fish oil seems to be the most responsible for that protective effect. DHA also has the best ability to reduce blood pressure.

EPA regulates blood supply to the brain, which is essential in maintaining focus in weight training sessions. DHA is important in brain membranes, memory, and cognitive function.

Fish oils increase serotonin levels (the happy neurotransmitter). Therefore, fish oils will decrease incidence of depression, anxiety, panic attack, and reduce carbohydrate cravings.

Fish oils will improve your cardiovascular risk profile by lowering VLDL, triglycerides, homocysteine, fibrinogen, and increasing HDL levels. Combining fish oils with plant sterols will improve lipid levels even more than either alone.

  • 29

Fish oils can also decrease blood pressure by several mechanisms. These include increases in the vasodilatory compound, and nitric oxide, to reducing vascular inflammation, blocking the constrictive elements in the vascular wall such as the calcium channels reducing blood viscosity, and inhibiting a blood vessel constrictor (thromboxane). Lipoprotein (a) is another CVD predictor that can be lowered by fish oils (a 19% reduction was seen with natural, stable fish oils and just 4% with a highly purified fish oil).

Fish oils are a great stress fighter. Supplementation with n-3 fatty acids inhibits the adrenal activation of steroids, aldosterone, epinephrine, and norepinephrine (catecholamines) elicited by a mental stress, apparently through effects exerted at the level of the central nervous system. Therefore, for the same amount of stress, one will produce fewer stress hormones if consuming fish oils on a regular basis.

Additional Benefits for Fish Oil:Turn on the lipolytic genes (fat burning genes)Turn off the lipogenic genes (fat storage genes)Increases utilization of fat stores from the adipocytesPreferential utilization for energy production once stored in the adipocytesReduces inflammation from physical trainingPain management from the reduced inflammation

    5.Alpha lipoic acid

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) has many functions, but its one of the most effective free radical scavengers, and the only one known to easily get into your brain. It also has the ability to regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamins C, E, and glutathione. Therefore when your body has used up these antioxidants, if theres ALA around, it helps regenerate them. You may not know this, but glutathione (also know as mother of all anti oxidents or master detoxifier) is another very important antioxidant. You can get it from supplements, but the only form that works effectively is the reduced form, which is difficult to absorb when taken orally. It is much more cost effective to supplement with precursors or items like alpha lipoic acid that regenerates glutathione.Alpha lipoic acid also recycles coenzyme Q10 and NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide).

But, if that wasnt enough, this powerful antioxidant is also: A great modifier of gene expression to reduce inflammationA very potent heavy metal chelatorAn enhancer of insulin sensitivity

The fact of the matter is, Nina Anakar is busy. Tasked with community marketing at sweetgreen, only the best and newest local restaurant, Ninas out making real relationships with real people. sweetgreen starts with salads but ends in community. Step foot into one of their locations, then experience, (yes it is an experience), their locally sourced food, then find out there is a whole world to get involved in, just from picking up lunch.

The seven-year-old company has made it their mission to get involved in whats going on. Teaming up with New York City trainers, running crews, plus schools and organizations, theyre looking out for your best interest, not just theirs. sweetgreen isnt taking over cities, theyre just helping bring the best out of them and then connecting the dots.

U What is sweetgreens mission and how did it get its start?NA Our mission at sweetgreen is to create a place for the community to enjoy delicious and healthy, organic salads, with ingredients sourced from local farmers and purveyors. sweetgreen was founded

in Washington, D.C., in 2007 by Georgetown graduates Nicolas Jammet, Jonathan Neman, and Nathaniel Ru who believed it was possible to create food that fits your values, your budget, your tastes, your imagination, and your community.

U How is it different from any other salad spot or restaurant? Especially in a time where health and fitness seem to be trending. Not a bad trend by any means!NA sweetgreen isnt just your typical grab and go salad bar; were really involved in each community that we open up in, from the local sourcing of ingredients to collaborating with fitness studios in the area for sweetgreen passport to teaching kids about healthy eating through sweetgreen in schools.

U What void does sweetgreen fill in the market? Or is it just doing it better?NA What I love about sweetgreen is that the food is not only healthy, but its also filling and comforting. Eating a sweetgreen salad isnt something you have to do to be healthy, its something you want to do, and can feel good about doing.

U Whats it like when you step into a store? Whats the feeling and food you experience?NA The in-store experience is something we really take pride

in; we hire passionate people with great smiles, and the music is always fun. Its a positive environment--people arent just taking their salads to go--they like to hang out at sweetgreen, especially back in the bleachers at our Nomad location.

U What is your job? Whats your favorite part of your job? NA I do the community marketing for sweetgreen in New York. My favorite part of the job, besides getting to eat delicious fresh food every day, is the people that I meet. Im making genuine connections with people every day, be it through classes at sweetgreen passport or by simply getting to know our regular customers.

U How did you come up with sweetgreen passport? How did instructors and studios respond when you approached them about this? Whats the criteria? How often do classes occur?NA sweetgreen passport started in January 2013 by our community marketing team in DC as an initiative to give our customers easy access to fitness classes in their community. I started it in NYC last January. Its a way for us to connect with fitness studios, individuals, and a way for our customers to connect with each other of healthy living. Our customers have really become a community through passport. We usually host about four classes a month; anything from sunset yoga and meditation, a run club

with UNDO-Ordinary, a FlyWheel class, to brew kamp with our friends at Kombucha Brooklyn. And we usually head over to the nearest sweetgreen for a salad after class!

U What is the 5-year goal with sweetgreen? 10-year?NA I personally want us to have a store on every block in NYC! But for now, Im focusing on continuing to build out the passport community and getting people excited about our opening in Williamsburg this Fall.

everything is a mixtape. The conversations and creations of our time are a remix of things that precede us. Im talking about real OGs like Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates. Were having an

existential moment that has come before, and will come again, where inspiration abounds, mindfulness is a common dinner topic, and sweat equals happiness. Given the luxury of understanding the value of time, were constantly thinking of how best to spend it, record it, capture it, and what those snapshots say about us to the world.

From the bards traveling from town to town retelling Homers Odyssey to linear prose during the rise of the Enlightenment, storytelling holds no truer, or more fragmented, space than now. The omnipresent idea of nowness through

the stream of visual conversations on social media put the magnifying glass to our own stories. The social construction of reality from Platos cave analogy, where the protagonists soul was a veritable prisoner fast bound within his body... and that instead of investigating reality by itself and in itself it is compelled to peer through the bars of its prison is indeed, social. FOMO and YOLO are colloquial references to NOW. Our prison is the voice inside that says no, wont, cant.

At a certain point as sentient beings, we begin to tell ourselves stories, to define what we are. Most of us live under the dominion of how the world defines us - what our jobs say, our histories say. Those statements not only precede us, but silently lead us into unconscious shackles of other peoples standards.

UNDO, part fitness collective, part training platform, and part lived aesthetic. It is about taking back YOUR story. The genesis of UNDO was a group run with a handful of badass chicks. And then it became a living mashup of culture, sport, fashion, and storytelling. From partnerships with Without Walls, late nights at Hotel Chantelle, to smashing finish lines, we are holding space for you and a conversation through movement.

Our proposition: using fear as fuel, together, lets ask questions, disrupt destructive paradigms of self loathing, and do the things that make us go damn when were 100.

Impermanence is real. How do we defy it? Cultivate moments of sweat, laughter, miles, swagger, friendship, and authenticity. At UNDO, we wanted to create a virtual home unshackled

by self doubt, where ordinary people can do extraordinary things. We redefine our stories by running, jumping, twerking, and working, in the way only endorphins can.

UNDOs mission - to redefine what it means to be an athlete and create unapologetic greatness along the way.

    undo. GIRls GOTTA RUN

Through collaborations with other running organizations and the integration of local Ethiopian communities, Girls Gotta Run has been able to provide their girls with the tools and moral support that they need to reach their full potential. Although GGR supplies their runners with the necessary gear, including shoes and training clothes, the empowerment that these girls feel doesnt just come from a pair of shoes. Kayla Nolan, the current Executive Director of Girls Gotta Run, gave us her perspective on what makes this foundation different and answered our most crucial questions: Why running? Why Ethiopia?

u The driving force of GGR is female empowerment. What do you think signifies empowerment?K I think empowerment is having the knowledge and autonomy to make decisions that affect your life. Empowerment is then visible when individuals have the capacity to manifest their decisions through action. In Ethiopia, women face incredible barriers to self-expression and decision-making. Publicly using your body as a powerful athletic tool is a new form of self-expression that many girls have previously been unable to explore in Ethiopia. I think the development of physical power as a catalyst for psychological, economic and social power continues to be a transformative result of the involvement of women in running from all backgrounds, ages and abilities.

its an anomaly in ethiopian culture for women to pass up marriage, dress in spandex shorts and run in groups of other women in the pursuit of olympic greatness.

u Why running?K We use running as a tool for empowerment because it is the most cost effective and culturally appropriate sport available. However, I think running is most effective internationally because it is available to every able-bodied individual. You dont need a hoop, a team, or expensive gear to run. Running belongs to everyone. I think there is something very powerful about being able to step into your physical strength, reach the goals you set for yourself and explore what it means to be a powerful human being.

In 2006, Girls Gotta Run Foundation was established to help impoverished Ethiopian girls

pursue their dreams of becoming professional runners. 8 years, 4 running teams, and nearly

50 runners later, Girls Gotta Run is going strong and pushing boundaries more than ever.

wRITER mAdeline turner PHOTOGRAPHER mArie clAire AndreA

    K

u Why Ethiopia?K GGR works specifically in Ethiopia because the country has an incredibly rich legacy of elite running. Running is one of the few realms in Ethiopian society where women are recognized as equal competitors to men and are respected for their contribution to the national identity through running. Its an anomaly in Ethiopian culture for women to pass up marriage, dress in spandex shorts and run in groups of other women in the pursuit of Olympic greatness. GGR leverages the cultural power of running in Ethiopia to create greater educational, economic and social opportunities for girls.

u What is GGRs ultimate goal?K GGR invests in girls who are using running and education to empower themselves and their communities. Our ultimate goal is to help girls avoid early marriage, stay in school, and find community and strength through running at a time in their lives when they are most vulnerable to harmful traditional practices. With this support, girls are then able to make decisions on their own behalf regarding their health, family, education, and finances into the future. GGR a girl revolution - one run at a time.

wearable technology is nothing new. I know you remember the Casio calculator watch from the from the 1980s. Recently though, things have gotten a bit more interesting or at least more trendy.

I am by no means a tech connoisseur, but I have been rocking this second-gen Nike+ Fuelband around for the last year or so. I remember my initial thoughts on the Fuelband before I got one. It went something like thats kind of cool but no way im dropping over $100 for a blinking band. Luckily, a friend overheard my cheap groaning and offered to give me the extra Fuelband that he inexplicably had lying around. I acted like I couldnt accept such a gift while grabbing it out of his hand. I was ecstatic. I couldnt wait to start using my new wearable tech and for the next few months I was never seen without it.

I raved about it to friends and family while quickly convincing myself that Nikes arbitrary Fuel Points system made so much sense. After using it for a week, I concluded Id definitely pay $150 for one of these. I guess you could say, I drank the Kool-Aid punch.

Initially, the Fuelband and I were like spinach and Pop-eye. I was working out harder and running more often. I wanted more and

My OddLy InTEnSE PSycHOLOgIcAL ExPERIEncE WITH WEARAbLE TEcH

more fuel points. Theres something about putting an objective number on a persons daily activity. It made me feel accountable for my own laziness in a new way. The Fuelband doesnt just tell you your fuel score for the day. It remembers your scores and, if you synch it to your computer or phone, it lays out all of your points on a graph in a weekly, monthly or yearly view. I quickly realized that this little band is actually a powerful data tool if used correctly. It is a little pseudo-science project on your wrist and as I would find out, it also has the potential to make you a little crazy. For a couple of months, the fuel band ruled but the excitement began to fade.

Soon, it stopped feeling like motivation on my wrist and started feeling like resentment. When I didnt have time for the gym or a run, the less than stellar fuel scores began to make me feel like I was lazy when I wasnt. 436 (Daily Activity) out of 5000 (Daily Goal) is not a great Fuel points percentage. I knew that it was only supposed to be an approximate measurement of daily movement but putting that objective number on my day, everyday, for months, is a dangerous proposition. It is especially dangerous when it comes from the Fuelband. That band was something I really liked and it tied closely into something I love exercise. In my mind, the Fuelband isnt just a gadget. Its Facebook page alone garners well over 200,000 likes. It is a living, breathing community of

thousands and thousands of people who you can interact with and whose stories can be viewed and followed. The Fuelband has developed a sort of mini-cultural movement. That movement carries with it some weight. I know this story may sound crazy but if you havent owned a fuel band yet, try it. You may not get into it like I did but the psychology of the whole thing just might surprise you.

I quickly got over the wrist resentment and the mini freakout of feeling objectively lazy. Its about a year later, and I still use my Fuelband from time to time. Ill admit though that it often ends up serving only as a glorified wrist-watch. The fuel points system is a fun idea but not without holes. It performs best when measuring running which is all I really use it for these days. When I see a Fuelband around NYC, it often seems like a status-symbol in the same way an iPhone usually does and the hypebeasts tell me its cool for now. Despite the not so iron-clad point measurements and unexpected social implications, I would still pay full price for one of these. In fact I did, as a birthday gift for my dad. There is something about the Fuelband that is very similar to much of Nikes brand. It has a mysterious and yet universally recognized eerie of cool. From LES high fashion kids to midwestern housewives to my own grandparents, everyone seems to like the Fuelband and somehow knows that its cool. If

youre still on the fence and need another reason then here you go. The Fuelband just became a collectors item. Nike recently announced its departure from the hardware side of wearable tech and possibly the end of the Fuelband as we know it. There has been some speculation that much of Nikes wearable tech R&D will be transferred over to Apple and may eventually reveal itself to the public in the form of the aptly named iWatch program. An equally welcome and ridiculous addition to the Apple family if you ask me. So before were all getting texts on our watches while simultaneously tracking biometrics, enjoy simpler times. Check out a Fuelband. Bottom line, its an exciting piece of wearable tech and one that Id recommend. Just try to not get too sucked in. The fuel points goal should never be your goal.

Feel the Pull of Brasils First Run Crew: Briza Corre

The pulse of Brasil beats for more than ftbol. Fresh off the World Cup craze, UNDO nestled into the crevices of Rios running scene with Briza Corre, the countrys first independent, unsponsored run crew. Founded by skateboarder Charles Silva, also the creator of Coletiv Briza, a non-profit fixated on providing low income cariocas (Rios inhabitants) with access to sport and sweat. My typical workout is a based off my state of mind, Silva notes, Targets and rates are for top athletes. Im an urban corridor and I see much more than just a medal. Im a street athlete. A true carioca, suburban corridor.

Originally sponsored by Nike Brasil in 2011, Silvas NGO, Coletiv Briza, began as part of Rios Coisadaboa Project, encouraging amateur runners to enter races around Brasil. Without any prior running experience, Silva along with other skaters and surfers became novice runners, training with the Coisadaboa Nike team. When the Nike project

ended, the weekly bonds and training runs continued. Briza was born.

The global running crew movement known as Bridge the Gap spans from the New York City Bridgerunners to Londons Run Dem Crew. Silva sees Briza as both part of, and separate from, a movement sometimes fueled by Instagram streams of fresh gear and sneakers. The average standard of a Brazilian runner is quite difficult to maintain as a lifestyle that goes beyond sports equipment. Today we are genuinely one of Crew STREET, a truly independent crew, race, blood, and sweat! He explains, Everything that happens in the movement Bridge the Gap is around U.S., Europe and Asia, recently. We welcome runners with open arms. But our reality is very different.

In a country where running shoes cost more than the average monthly wage, the democratization of sport is a revolution mile-by-mile for Briza. Drawn to sports as a tool for social transformation,

Silva gravitates towards low cost and membership-free movement in street culture: the run, the ride, the roll, the surf.

Lack of resources does not trump resounding interest in running as a sport. A 2013 study by the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) cites 25 million Brasilians run over 50 days or more a year, as compared to 4 million in the United States. Six percent of the Brasilian population, or 19 million, runners log 100 or more yearly miles, making running the third most popular sport after futbol (30.4M or 16% of the population) and skateboarding (4M).

Today the country is poor in resources to the sport, this reflects in society today that there is an epidemic of physical inactivity in Brasil, costs or lack of access to sports are big culprits, adds Silva. Briza aims to spread the movement throughout the country. Celebrating its third birthday this year, Briza now has sister crews in the four states in the Southeast.

Briza is in charge of Rio de Janeiro, The RUNderground-So Paulo, and Minas Gerais-BHZRC - unifying to mobilize others to race the streets.

Also a teacher, Silva brings his students to run, skate, and use the street as their playground. Open to all levels of conditioning, the weekly training follows 3 tracks: elite (passionate sub-40 minute 10K runners who have logged over 1000KM); trainer runners (adore the struggle and focus on speed); casual runners (Little time for training, playing responsibly, never quitting). Silva delineates, My workouts are not a spreadsheet. I see the race as a mood, a need in my body, and will to His [Gods] will, he exclaims, start to move by walking to get energy all over the body, and then the sweat comes, and the mind gets balance, and the heart speeds up. Thats being Briza Corre!

Feel the Pull, Silvas mantra, is rooted in the pull and momentum of his daily beloved skateboard commute. With skate and surf in its DNA and social change fueling the fire, we see Briza Corre making waves. Its not about the sneaker drop, its about the run, the love, the sweat. Pick up what Brizas putting down. Its spreading.

My workouts are not a spreadsheet. I see the race as a mood, a need in my body, and will to His [Gods] will,
