Coaching Youth Players

Your role as a coach Teacher, leader, counselor, role model, etc. As a coach, you will be many things to your players. Here are a few important tips to be a good coach:

Always be positive Keep teaching points simple. Be organized. Encourage participation without pressure. Use creativity and make it fun! Listen to your players. Get parents involved. Set goals to challenge your players.

Meet the Parents A pre-season meeting with the parents will provide information to parents about their child’s team at the start of the season. The meeting will also provide an opportunity for people to meet and get to know one another as well as open the lines of communication to discuss what is expected of everyone

Safety First There are always risks associated with any sporting event. As a coach, you must be aware and, in your best effort, reduce any possible incidence.

Environmental risks: Weather (Lightning, rain, heat and cold), protection from insects and sun (UV rays).

Equipment and facilities risks: Poor field conditions, goals not properly anchored.

Page 6: Under 10 The Basics - Amazon S3 · bracelets, necklaces, jewelry on the players. (Even the rubber bracelets necklaces rope.) Players can not cover their earrings, pendants or other

Human risks: Improper play on and off the field, player’s medical conditions, dehydration. All players should have their own water bottle.

Note: Players should be advised to always bring water, sun screen and insect repellent to games or training sessions.

Player information Coaches should always have their players’ information on hand. In the event of an emergency this information should be readily available. The form can be found in Appendix.

Player information (Appendix A): Used for managing the team.

Player emergency information (Appendix B): In the event of an emergency, this information may be required.

Player Development

Game Play At the under 10 level, the players are in a transition phase. They will go from practicing and playing small sided games to playing actual games including a referee.

Practices are scheduled at the beginning of the season; however coaches may have training sessions outside the regular time of play.

Players should also be allowed to try all the positions, including the goalkeeper.

Rules of the Game The standard FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) laws of the game apply, except for a few minor changes.

The most noticeable changes are the field dimensions and goals size. The playing surface is approximately 55 yards long by 35 yards wide and the goal size is 12 yards in width by 6 feet in height. The rest of playing area is also reduced accordingly:

• Goal Area: 5 yards x 12 yards

• Penalty Area: 10 yards x 25 yards

• Penalty Spot: 8 yards from goal line

• Distance from ball for free kick: 8 yards

• Ball Size: Size 4

The duration of the game is also reduced as well as the number of players on the field. They play for two 20 minutes halves (5 minute break between

Page 8: Under 10 The Basics - Amazon S3 · bracelets, necklaces, jewelry on the players. (Even the rubber bracelets necklaces rope.) Players can not cover their earrings, pendants or other

each half) and are 7 aside. There are 6 players and one goal keeper. No statistics are kept at this age group. Shin guards are mandatory for this category. The soccer socks must completely cover the shin guards.

A provincial decision by the referees and Soccer NB no longer accept bracelets, necklaces, jewelry on the players. (Even the rubber bracelets necklaces rope.) Players can not cover their earrings, pendants or other with tape.

Rules:

There is no offside.

The goalkeeper can not take the ball in his hands outside the goal area for .

The players can not score a goal if they are inside the goal area.

When the ball goes out of bounds over the side line, the opposing will throw the ball back in to play. The ball must be thrown in using both hands and must be thrown from behind & over the head in one movement. The thrower must also throw in the direction of the throw while keeping his feet touching the ground at the moment he releases the ball. A player will have 3 attempts to throwing the ball. If he misses all 3, the ball will be given to the opposing team to have them throw it in. Referees are asked to demonstrate the proper technique before the 3rd attempt if the player is unable to throw it in.

To set the buttons we require a distance of 2 meters from the opposing team.

If the ball goes out of bounds over the goal line, the ball goes to the keeper if the opposing team to touch the ball last. He places the ball on the ground in his goal area and the kicks the ball back in to play. The ball must leave the penalty area to be considered in play. If it does not leave the area, the keeper will kick the ball again.

It will be a corner kick if the ball has been hit by the defensive team before going out of bounds over the goal line. The ball will be placed in the

Page 9: Under 10 The Basics - Amazon S3 · bracelets, necklaces, jewelry on the players. (Even the rubber bracelets necklaces rope.) Players can not cover their earrings, pendants or other

quarter circle in the corner of the field and kicked back in to play from a player of the attacking team.

Opposing players must be 8 yards from the ball for any goal kick, free kick and corner kick.

Any “handball” will be called only if it has been done intentionally, especially with younger children. Example: If a player raises his arm to block the ball, this is a handball. If the player has his arm next to his body and the ball hit his arm, a handball will not be called (no intension to hit the ball with the arm)

At the beginning of the game after each goal and at the beginning of the 2nd half, each player must be in his own half.

The goalkeeper has six seconds to kick or throw the ball after making a save.

The goalkeeper can not take the ball in his hands after a receiving pass from his players. However, he can play with his feet. If this occurs, the offensive team gets an indirect free kick where the keeper touched the ball.

Violations:

The act 12 soccer regulations (FIFA) will apply to:

A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits one of the ten offenses following manner considered by the referee as being negligent, reckless or using excessive force:

To strike or attempt to strike an opponent with the foot,

Making or attempting to trip an opponent

Jumping on an opponent

Charging an opponent

To strike or attempt to strike an opponent with hand,

Page 10: Under 10 The Basics - Amazon S3 · bracelets, necklaces, jewelry on the players. (Even the rubber bracelets necklaces rope.) Players can not cover their earrings, pendants or other

Pushing an opponent

Making a tackle against an opponent to take possession of the ball while making contact with the opponent before touching the ball,

Holding an opponent

Spitting at an opponent

Deliberately touching the ball with his hands (except the goalkeeper in his own penalty area)

No yellow or red card will be given to players for dangerous offenses. The referee will warn the player for the first offense. If the player continues this dangerous action, he will be asked to leave the field temporarily and discusses his behavior with his coach. The referee will advise the coach of the incident and explain to player that this is not acceptable. If the inappropriate behavior is repeated a third time, the player will be asked to leave the field for the rest of the game.

Skills and Technique Emphasis should be made on the basic skills of soccer: Dribbling, passing, shooting and controlling the ball with parts of the body except the arms and hands (this excludes drills for goalkeepers).

Demonstrate the technique, practice it and then play a game with it. Also indicate when this skill or technique can be used in a game.

Appendix C: Examples of Practices

Practice # 1 Welcome (10 minutes) Gather players and parents and discuss what is expected at the under 8 age group and it will be organized.

• There must always be at least one parent or guardian present at the field at all times.

• Items required at each soccer sessions: water, insect repellent, and sun screen.

• Equipment required: Soccer cleats and shin pads. Soccer cleats are not mandatory, but are highly recommended. Shin pads are mandatory.

• How the soccer sessions will run:

• From 6:30pm to 7:30pm every Tuesday and Thursday. In case of heavy rain it will be canceled. The parents always make the final decisions to bring their child to soccer.

• The first 2 weeks will be practices only. The following 2 weeks will be a practice / scrimmage. The remainder of the season will be only games.

• There will be some traveling.

• Discuss your philosophy as a coach.

Provide your (coach’s) contact information Name: Telephone: Email:

Warm up

1- One-Touch Name Game. (10 minutes) Everybody is in a circle and the coach is in the middle of the circle. The coach pass the ball to one of the players. The player must receive the pass, shoot out his or her name and pass the ball back to the coach. The coach then passes the ball to another player. Do this until everybody has had a chance to introduce themselves.

Note: Explain how important it is to know all your teammates names.

Page 13: Under 10 The Basics - Amazon S3 · bracelets, necklaces, jewelry on the players. (Even the rubber bracelets necklaces rope.) Players can not cover their earrings, pendants or other

2- Fetch and return to home (10 minutes) Create a large square grid (30m x 30m) with a smaller grid (5m x5m) in the middle of the large grid. Put all the balls in the small grid. Divide the players in 4 groups and have each group line up on a different side of the large grid. This will be that group’s home.

Start by having all the players walk to the small grid and get a ball and return to their home with the ball. Next have them return the ball to the small grid. Keep doing this same procedure, but vary the method of retrieve and returning the ball.

Example: -Run and dribble the ball back. -Put cones in the large grid. Players must go around the come before returning with the ball. -Must roll on the ground before retuning with the ball -Return to someone else’s home

3- Dynamic stretching. (7 minutes) This type of stretching should be done before every game or practice once the body is warm up. It prepares the body for the movements that will occur while playing soccer.

Examples of dynamic stretching: -Rotation of arms -Swinging the leg in a kicking motion -Twisting at the torso

Note: Save static stretching for the end of the practice.

Coordination Exercises (7 minutes)

1- Line up cones in a straight line. The distance between each cone should increase as the you go down the line. All players line up and one at a time step with one foot only between each cone until they reach the last cone, and then return to the starting point to repeat.

2- Line up cones at 45 degree angles. All players line up and one at a time hop from one cone to the next jumping only from the leg nearest to the cone.

3- Line up cone as indicated. All players line up and one at a time hop from one cone to the next jumping only from the leg nearest to the cone.

Page 14: Under 10 The Basics - Amazon S3 · bracelets, necklaces, jewelry on the players. (Even the rubber bracelets necklaces rope.) Players can not cover their earrings, pendants or other

Ball Skils and Games

Introduce everyone to the soccer ball. The ball is your friend and in the game of soccer we can touch with any part of our body accept for one part… Our Hands!

1- Fancy tricks. (10 minutes) Have all players with a ball dribbling the ball in a large grid. The coach yells a number from 1 to 4. Each number is associated to a move with the ball. The player must do the move that is associated with the number. Introduce each number (move) one at a time. Start with only number 1 than add a number and so on.

Example of moves: - Turning outside of the foot (Use a number for each foot) - Turning inside of the foot (Use a number for each foot) - Hit the ball with the heal to change direction - Cut the ball behind you

2- Juggling (10 minutes) Juggling means keeping the ball in the air with any part of our body except for our hands. Demonstrate how to juggle the ball. At first this may be difficult for most of us, but start of slow. Start by…

- Holding the ball in both hands, drop it on your tight and catch it again. - Same thing on the other tight - Do the same for each foot - Same as above, but let the ball bounce on the ground before hitting it with your foot or tight. -Have the ball in your hands, drop it to your foot or tight and try to hit it twice before catching it with your hands. - Challenge your players to the maximum number of contact they can do with the ball without it hitting the ground.

3- Kick out (10 Minutes) All players in a large square grid with a ball for each player. On the Go! signal players try to kick the ball of the other players outside the grid. If a player’s ball is kicked out…

1- He /She retrieves the ball, juggles the ball 10 times and returns to the grid with a ball to continue the game.

2- After 2 or 3 minutes of the number 1 option, once the player’s ball is kick out that player now tries to kick the other players ball without him / her having a ball of their own. This is done until there is only one player remaining. That player is declared the winner.

Page 15: Under 10 The Basics - Amazon S3 · bracelets, necklaces, jewelry on the players. (Even the rubber bracelets necklaces rope.) Players can not cover their earrings, pendants or other

4- 3 vs 3 Scrimmage (15 minutes) Setup a field to allow a 3 on 3 game with no keepers. Goals can only be scored if the ball is passed along the ground through the cones. The goals should be no bigger than 2 meters wide.

Coach the players, but allow them to play. This is what they like most. Keep it positive. Acknowledge their good plays.

Cool Down (15 minutes)

Gather the players and stretch. Explain how important it is to stretch (Prevents injuries and keeps the body in good shape). At the end of a game or practice static stretching should be done and stretches should be held for 20 to 30 seconds and reapeated. Note: This is also a good time to review what was worked on during the practice or what happened during the game.

Page 16: Under 10 The Basics - Amazon S3 · bracelets, necklaces, jewelry on the players. (Even the rubber bracelets necklaces rope.) Players can not cover their earrings, pendants or other

Practice # 2 Welcome.

While setting for the soccer session, try to meet and talk to every parent and player before the practice starts.

Warm Up

1- Touches (10 Minutes) Divide the players in to 2 groups. One group with a ball and one without. The group with a ball forms a large circle. The group without the ball gathers inside the circle. The players inside the circle must request the ball from one of the players with a ball. The player passes the ball to the player inside the circle and that player returns the ball to the same player. The exercise starts off by doing the pass with the foot. Afterwards, the player outside the circle will toss the ball (with two hands and under hand) to the player inside the circle. The player inside the circle starts off by using the foot to control the ball, and then uses the tight, chest, and head. Players change position (inside or outside of the circle) every time the coach indicates to change method of control (foot, tight, chest, and head)

2- Crab (5 minutes) Half of the players sit down and the other half dribble the ball. The Dribblers move around, keeping the ball under close control. The sitting players move in crab-like fashion and stretch to kick the ball away from the dribbling players. The playing area should not be to large and players must use inside and outside of both feet while keeping the head up

3- Dynamic stretching. (5 minutes) This type of stretching should be done before every game or practice once the body is warm up. It prepares the body for the movements that will occur while playing soccer.

Examples of dynamic stretching: -Rotation of arms -Swinging the leg in a kicking motion -Twisting at the torso

Note: Save static stretching for the end of the practice.

Ball Skills and Games

Page 17: Under 10 The Basics - Amazon S3 · bracelets, necklaces, jewelry on the players. (Even the rubber bracelets necklaces rope.) Players can not cover their earrings, pendants or other

1- Broom Ball (15 minutes) Teach them how to hit the ball with the inside. Explain and demonstrate. Put one foot next to the ball facing the direction you want to pass. Turn the other foot 90 degrees and sweep the ball like a broom. Things to look for proper technique: Always have the hips facing the direction of the pass and the toe of the kicking foot up with ankle locked. A) Have players pair up and practice passing with the inside of the foot only. Emphasis on technique. The drill may be simple, but must be done properly.

B) Set a line of cones parallel and 5 meters on each side of the center line. In groups of 2, players start on the cone and only one player has the ball. The player with the ball will be stationary during this exercise. The player without the ball will time his / her run to received the pass on the center and pass back. Then the player must run back touch the cone and return for a second pass. Do this for 30 second and change player. Start with unlimited touches. Move on to only 2 touches and then one touch.

C) Give & Go Give the pass and run to receive the ball pass the cone. Have a player line up with each cone.

2- Sharp Shooter (5 minutes) Have the players line up with a ball on each side of a rectangular grid (longer side). The coach lines up with a ball at one end of the field (short side). The coach tries to dribble the ball at the other end of the field while the players try to hit the coach’s ball with their own ball. Have the players one at a time dribble the ball through the alley without having their ball hit.

3- 3 vs 1 (10 minutes) In a square grid (5m x 5m), the 3 offensive players must stay outside the grid to pass the ball. The defender must try to intercept the passes. 30 seconds and switch defender.

Page 18: Under 10 The Basics - Amazon S3 · bracelets, necklaces, jewelry on the players. (Even the rubber bracelets necklaces rope.) Players can not cover their earrings, pendants or other

4- King’s Castle (15 minutes) Divide the players in 3 groups. Create a rectangular grid and divide it in to 3 squares. Each team is in one of the squares. The ball starts in the middle square and is passed in to one of the other squares. The team that receives the ball must make 3 consecutive passes and try to pass it to the square at the far end. The team that passed the ball (the team in the middle square) sends a defender to try to intercept the passes and they can also intercept the pass from going to the other square.

If the pass is intercepted, the teams switch positions. If not the team in the middle now defends in the other square.

5- 4 vs 4 scrimmage (10 minutes) Add conditions of play: Only able to touch the ball with the right foot or left foot, maximum of 3 touches on the ball or maximum of 2 touches.

Cool Down

Gather the players and stretch. Explain how important it is to stretch. Also review what they learned at the practice: “To make a pass , we can use the inside of our foot.” Review technique.

Always finish with a team cheer!

Page 19: Under 10 The Basics - Amazon S3 · bracelets, necklaces, jewelry on the players. (Even the rubber bracelets necklaces rope.) Players can not cover their earrings, pendants or other

Ball Skills and Games

1- Body Parts. (5 minutes) Have all players dribble a ball all over the field. Yell stop and shout out a body part (never say hands). The player must touch the ball with the mentioned body part. Once the ball is touch, tell them to get up again and keep walking with the ball. Mention at least 10 body parts and be creative (ear, hip, bum, back, top of the head, etc.).

2- Air Traffic Controller (3 minutes) Everybody stands on the line and the coach stands at the other end facing the soccer players. The coach directs the players with hands gestures. *Left arm up to the side, players move to their right (the coach is facing the players). *Right arm up to the side, players move to their left. *Both arm up to the side, players move backward. *Both arms up overhead, players run forward.
