    18 January - Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today called on the Government and all parties in Yemen as well as States in the region to commit to a comprehensive and

     permanent ceasefire to enable the rapid resumption of already delayed peace talks whichthe United ations is facilitating!

    +n the face of ceasefire violations "r! Ban,s Special (nvoy for Yemen +smail uld .heikh%hmed ad/ourned peace talks in Swit0erland in &ecember to allow for bi-lateral in-country and regional consultations toachieve a comprehensive ceasefire!

    18 January - United ations humanitarian agencies e5pressed concern today that anestimated 188'888 people are facing 9sharply deteriorating conditions: in the besiegedwestern side of &eir-(0-;or city in Syria' while the top U relief official stressed that theworld body continues to act 9impartially' neutrally and independently: to reach people inneed throughout the country!

    9Brien said he can assure that 9the U is neither too close to any party nor acting insuch a way to encourage the use of siege tactics!:

    9+t is our duty to act impartially' neutrally and independently' and to have contact with all parties to negotiate unimpededand safe access to those who are vulnerable and in need' regardless of how or why their need arises': he insisted!

    sustainable and modern energy' United ations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon todaystressed at the )orld *uture (nergy Summit taking place in the United %rab (mirates!

    9Sustainable energy is the thread that connects economic growth' social e=uity' and ourefforts to combat climate change': "r! Ban told industry leaders from around the worldattending the week-long conference in %bu &habi!

    6ighlighting last year>s 9landmark: global agreements on the Sustainable &evelopmentGoals AS&Gs and on climate change at .$1@ in &ecember' the U chief noted that forthe first time' every country in the world pledged to act internationally and domestically toaddress climate change!

    97he universality of these agreements' and their inclusive nature' mean that we have a clear way forward': he said! 9ow isthe time for action! Governments' the private sector' regional and international organi0ations' must start working toimplement the @3 ambitious Global Goals': he said!

    ne of these Goals C S&G3 C aims to ensure access to affordable' reliable' sustainable and modern energy for all! 6ee5plained that clean' sustainable energy will not only help safeguard the future of the planet C keeping temperature rise

     below the two degree .elsius goal C it will also directly save an estimated D!E million lives every year! 7hat is the estimatednumber of people who die prematurely from pollution resulting from indoor cookstoves that use fire' coal' charcoal oranimal waste!

    9"ost of these people are women and children' who spend their time near wood-burning stoves and open flames! +t iswomen and girls who bear the brunt of collecting firewood and fuels C time-consuming activities which limit their work andeducation opportunities': the U chief warned!

    6e added that S&G3 is also at the heart of development' since more than one billion people in the world have no access toelectricity!

    9%chieving S&G3 well before 18E8 will vastly improve our chances of achieving the Global Goals on food security' healthcare' education' employment' sustainable cities and more': he declared! 9)e have made a good start! 7here has beenremarkable progress on many fronts!:

    7he Secretary-General noted that a new generation of energy-efficient appliances is giving people access to the lighting'heating' communication and other tools that they need' while reminding all leaders and decision-makers at the Summit thatemissions must be cut drastically and counterproductive subsidies must end!

    9Governments and the private sector will need to align their decisions': he insisted! 9(very dollar of the trillions that will bespent on new infrastructure in the ne5t @2 years must be invested in climate-friendly pro/ects that will drive the growth oflow-carbon goods and services!:

    weather pattern' the worst in over three decades' e5acerbates drought' the United ations)orld *ood $rogramme A)*$ warned today that it faces critical funding challenges inscaling up food and cash-based aid!

    97he number of people without enough food could rise significantly over coming months asthe region moves deeper into the so-called lean season' the period before the %pril harvestwhen food and cash stocks become increasingly depleted': )*$ said in a news release!9$articularly vulnerable are smallholder farmers who account for most agricultural

     production!:

    7he cyclical (l iIo pattern of devastating droughts on some regions and catastrophic floods in others that can affect tens ofmillions of people around the globe' is already leading to even worse drought across southern %frica' affecting this year,scrops!

    *ood prices across southern %frica have been rising due to reduced production and availability! 7he price of mai0e' thestaple for most of the region' is 3E per cent higher in "alawi than the three-year average for this time of year!

    9+,m particularly concerned that smallholders won,t be able to harvest enough crops to feed their own families through theyear' let alone to sell what little they can in order to cover school fees and other household needs': "s! .ousin said!

    )*$ is working with Governments' regional organi0ations and other partners on contingency' preparedness to secure foodsupplies and protect people,s livelihoods!

    )*$ assessment analysts estimate that more than D8 million rural and H million urban people in the region live ingeographic 0ones that are highly e5posed to the fall-out from (l iIo! South %frica' the ma/or breadbasket of the region' has

    indicated that this (l iIo-induced drought is the worst the country has suffered in more than half a century!

    ne particularly worrying symptom of southern %frica,s vulnerability to food and nutrition security is the alarming rate ofchronic malnutrition! Fevels of stunting among children in "adagascar' "alawi' "o0ambi=ue and ;ambia are among theworst in the world!

    18 January - early a decade after the U 6uman s rights were violated for having been denied an abortion C andrecommended that the Government compensate her C the U human rights officeannounced today that $eru has said it will pay compensation for having refused her accessto a legal medical procedure!

    +n 188@' a @3-year-old $eruvian girl' named JK!F!'> was @D weeks pregnant when doctors atthe public hospital in Fima diagnosed the foetus with anencephaly! %nencephaly is a fatal

     birth defect' where the foetus lacks most or all of the forebrain! &octors told her thatcontinuing the pregnancy would put her life and health at risk! She was recommended to

    have an abortion!

    %bortion was legal in $eru for such reasons' but the hospital refused termination on the grounds that the State had not
