CERTIFICATION IN HUMAN SUBJECTS PROTECTION
PEERRS
• Program for Education and Evaluation in Responsible Research and Scholarship
• PEERRS courses provide training required per university, state, and federal regulations regarding responsible conduct of research (RCR).
• PEERRS certifications are valid for three (3) years from the last completion date.

WHEN IS PEERS TRAINING REQUIRED?
• PEERRS certification may be required for participation on a study or project team, depending on:• your role (e.g., Principal Investigator), • the funding source (e.g., NIH), • and/or the type of research (e.g., human subjects)
Your PEERRS certification status is verified by the applicable U-M administrative office (i.e., ORSP, IRB, UCUCA) when you are listed as:
• An investigator on a project proposal (PAF)• A study team member on a human subjects application (HUM)• The PI or personnel on an animal application/protocol
WHAT IF I HAVE RECEIVED HUMAN SUBJECTS TRAINING SOMEWHERE ELSE?
You can request a waiver if you have completed CITI training
PEERRS CERTIFICATION PROCESS
Step One
Determine the courses you need to complete: Use the table/s to identify the required course(s) for certification.
Certification may be based on your role (e.g., PI), your area of research (e.g., human subjects), and/or the funding source for a research project.
You may need to complete more than one course for full certification.

Step Two
Register for a course: If you are a U-M employee or student, select the course title in the table header to log in to My LINC (the university's online Learning and Information Center) with your uniqname and UMICH password.
After you log in, complete the registration process and begin the course. For step-by-step instructions see My LINC Training Registration.
If other members of your study team are not affiliated with UM and need training they can request a “friends” account in PEERRS.
PEERRS CERTIFICATION PROCESS
Step Three
Take the course: PEERRS requires that you navigate through all the pages in a course and pass the certification test (if applicable).
For Human Subjects Protection Certification. 100% score is required for certification. You may take the test as many times as needed.
For Students- For your IRB application you will need either the Human Subjects Protection- Biomedical and Health Module, or the Social-Behavioral Module other modules may be needed as per department requirements.

Step Four
Record course completion:
After passing the test, use the following steps to record your course completion in My LINC.
Click Next in the courses Certification Results window. (For full credit, do not close this window or click Exit.)
Click Next on the following page to record course completion. (This is a key step.)
Click OK to the pop-up window to go to the Learning Activity Progress Detail page.
This page must show 100% completion for each chapter in the course and a passing score on the certification test (if applicable).
Click OK to return to the My LINC home page.
