Michael is a Chartered engineer (MIGEM) with extensive experience and knowledge of the structure and operation of the energy industry. During his career Michael has worked closely with a range of clients both nationally and internationally in government as well as the gas, electricity, water and rail industries. He has an extensive network of contacts that provides access to a wealth of knowledge on the operations of the energy sector. Michael has held senior positions in the UK energy industry as well as working in central government and consultancy. Between 1996 and 2003 he was Head of System Operation and responsible for the day-to-day physical and commercial operation of the UK gas network through the Gas National Control Centre. Our Trainer

Michael has extensive experience of working with energy companies, regulators and governments in

ranges. This involved liaison with Local Authority Emergency Planners and the HSE (Health and

Safety Executive).

Course outline

Background

The emergency preparedness workshop programme outlined is intended to provide training on all

aspects of the management of gas supply emergencies. It includes input on the structure of

emergency arrangements and guidance on the management of gas emergencies including the

interaction with external organisations. This is combined with syndicate work on a number of

credible gas emergency scenarios.

Course Objective

On completing the workshop participants will have an appreciation of the following;

• Different types of potential gas emergency,

• Structure of emergency arrangements (demand management/customer communications),

• Interactions with external agencies (emergency services/ government/media), and

• Structure of the emergency response (managing an emergency).

• Module 2 – Gas Emergency Arrangements

• Syndicate Session (managing a gas explosion)

• Guest Speaker (local experience of emergency management)

Afternoon • IGEM Standards and Services

• Module 3 – Identifying and Managing Stakeholders

• Module 4 – Managing the Emergency Response

• Syndicate Session (managing a major loss of supply)
