What better way to celebrate a 50th anniversarythan being joined by one of South Africa’s top
bands, Mi Casa! This three-man band will grace Uiten-hage High and its supporters with their presence dur-ing the schools anniversary celebrations next Friday,22 August.
“It is all systems go for this historic and magnificentevent. Tickets are selling like hot cakes!” said an ex-cited Phillip Joseph, who spoke on behalf of Uitenha-ge High and the organising committee.
Musicians Dr Duda, J’Something and Mo-T formedMi Casa during 2011 and soon afterwards releasedtheir first album, which went gold quickly and wonseveral awards. Their hit single “These Streets”showcased their unique urban jazz sound.
The 50th year celebrations will be held at the Uiten-hage Indoor Sports Centre at 20:00. Several local art-ists who have attended Uitenhage High during thepast 50 years will also perform during the event.

The Uitenhage 14 Round Table and Uitenha-ge Lions Club will be presenting this year’sMelodrama with the theme “Sir Waaiwors”.
This is an epic tale of knights and fights,witches and glitches, bad rhyming andworse timing as well as a...pot. Will SirWaaiwors survive the onslaught of fate? Canthe hunchback carry the burden that rests
on his shoulders, or in this case, his back?This medieval soapie features a host of
weird and wacky characters, all delightfullybrought to life by the worst actors in thecommunity.
Critics have called the play “a slap in theface of good taste” and “a mockery of finecitizens and a travesty of decency”. They doall agree, however, that it is not to be missed.
Both a cash bar and kitchen will be avail-
able to satisfy the thirsty and hungry. Theshow will take place over the weekends of29 & 30 August and 5 & 6 September com-mencing 19:30 for 20:00.
Tickets are R70 per person with all pro-ceeds raised distributed to charities and theneedy in our local communities of Uitenha-ge and Despatch. No under 18s will be per-mitted and the right of admission to the mel-odrama is reserved.

The once strong Nico Pietersen(25) from Kirkwood who easily
could pull a 140kgkudubull from themountains after a successful hunt,nowadays receives treatment, learn-ing to walk, talk and use his armsagain.
“On 10th February this year, wehad to rush Nico to hospital as hehad suffered a mid-brain Arterio-venous Malformation (AVM),” saidhis father Kerneels Pietersen,former Agri EC President.
Pietersen explained that none ofthem was familiar with the wordAVM, but he and his wife Louisa dida lot of research on internet.
AVM affects only 3 out of every10 000 people and it is masses of ab-normal blood vessels that grow inthe brain.
“It consists of blood vessel ‘nests’through which arteries connect di-rectly to veins, instead of throughthe elaborate connection of verysmall vessels. Some people are bornwith these ‘nests’ like in Nico’s case.
“These ‘nests’ were in his mid-brain, on both sides and both ‘nests’caused severe bleeding into hisbrain resulting in the loos of neuro-logical functions.”
After three days in theCuylerHos-pital in Uitenhage, Nico was trans-ferredviaa 911 ICUJet to theUniver-sity of Cape Town’s private hospital.
The flight cost was nearly R200 000.“In Cape Town a very complicated
procedure was done on Nico. Theprofessors said it was successful al-though there was no prognosis asNico was in a coma.”
Nico was later transferred via thesame Jet to the Aurora Care Centrein Port Elizabeth. On arrival he wasunable to breathe on his own, couldnot eat or communicate in any way.He followed a strenuous rehabilita-tion programme.
“He has improved miraculously.Nico is currently breathing on hisown, able to eat but needs to be fedand regained his speech althoughwith difficulty.
“Back on the farm we had to alterthe home and do extensive renova-tions to be wheelchair friendly andto accommodate his special require-ments after he was discharged fromAurora. We would like to make hisenvironment as comfortable as pos-sible.
“He requires 24/7 assistance andmust still be transported 90km fromhome toAuroraonaweeklybasis fortherapeutic sessions,” said Pie-tersen.
According to a friendof the family,Frans Vermaak, medical costs areadding up to millions of rands.
An appeal is made to the public tofinancially contribute towardsNico’s trust fund: Frans Vermaak &Kie for Nico, Nedbank Uitenhage(127716), account 2007359421.
“Wewould like to thank all medical person-nel who have attended to Nico. Since day oneat the Cuyler Hospital, at UCT private hospi-tal and also at Aurora Centre, they all havejust been so professional and helpful.
“We would love to see him do what he usedto love and live his life to the fullest,” saidKerneels and Louisa Pietersen.

Well-known entrepreneurial and adventurous business couple PanaandAthina Panagis are back in townwith a newventure, being ownersof The Butchery inside Fruit & Veg City in Uitenhage.
The couple sold their fuel station in Graaff Rei-net Road as well as Panhandle restaurant andthought they were ready to retire. But, as busi-ness runs in their veins, the couple soon realizedthey really miss the trade and are indeed notready to retire.

The Panagis couple has already implementedvarious changes to The Butchery, with their mainaim being to provide better quality service andbetter quality meat.
“Our products, like sausages, have onlymeat in-side with the spices and no other fillers. We guar-antee any product that The Butchery sells.
“We provide the best quality meat we can andat the best price,” said Pana Panagis.
