The annual Christmas in July charityevent held at Fairview Racecoursehelped raise R40 000 for charity.
The beneficiary for this year’s event wasMickey Mouse Crèche, under the auspices oftheUitenhageChild andFamilyWelfareSoci-etyMark and Dorrie Sham of Sham Racing,
contributed largely to the success of the eventby rounding up their family, friends and do-nating R40 000 to this worthy cause.Access Racing also joined in on the spirit
of selflessness and provided all meals andsnacks for children at no cost.To ensure that the money raised serviced
needs of the children, Fairview staff pur-chasedblankets, floor-mats, towels and toilet-ries for Uitenhage Child and Family WelfareSociety.The remainingbalancewill go towardspro-
viding food to the crèche on a monthly basis.Seventy pre-primary children from theUitenhage Child and Family Welfare Societywere the recipients of this goodwill.Uitenhage-born businessman and board
member from the Uitenhage Child and Fami-ly Welfare Society, Theo Klaas, said “We areoverwhelmed and extremely grateful for thehospitality extended to the children and thevery generous donation from the racing fra-ternity.”Launched in 2013, Christmas in July is an
annual event where Fairview Racecoursecontributes to Mandela month by hosting acharity day to help raise funds for local chari-ties.Chairman of Management Board of the So-

of requesting the Nelson Mandela Metropoli-tan Municipality to adhere to the traffic con-gestion during funerals held at the Matanzi-
ma Graveyard, this issue has been attendedto.
“I wrote a letter of complaint about a yearago, regarding the fact that there was only onegateway to enter the Matanzima graveyard,”said Mzwandile Sibidla from KwaNobuhle
“This resulted in traffic congestion during
funerals and the danger of accidents.“To my delight they (the municipality) re-
sponded soon after receiving my letter.“They have added a second gate to be used
as an exit and improved the road itself. I feelthat I must thank the municipality, althoughthe work has not yet been completed.
“As a resident I appreciate the fact that Iwas listened to. The ability to listen is one ofthe essential skills of those who are in admin-istration.
“Please keep it up. We as residents are look-ing forward to the completion of the envis-aged improvement,” said Sibidla.

The carnivalwill be held on 30thAugustand stallholders are invited to book.The aim of the Carnival is to get resi-
dents as well as businesses involved in afunorientated event and to generate fundsin keeping the CPF on the go. The CPF isself supporting and a voluntary servicewhich is operating extremelywell anddef-initely has had an impact in combatingcrime.

Larry Craig de la Harpe has been appoint-ed as the principal at Dalrose PrimarySchool in Uitenhage.
Education Development Officer (EDO)of the Uitenhage District office, VuyisileJonas, visited the school to congratulateDe la Harpe whose new position as princi-pal was effective from 1 July 2014.
De la Harpe started his career in educa-
tion as a teacher at Jubilee Park Primaryduring 1987 where he taught mainly Eng-lish and Accountancy. In 1996 he was pro-moted to Head of Department. Throughthe unpleasant process of redeploymenthe had to take up a position at CW Hen-drickse Primary School in August 1999.
After a long period of applications, hewas eventually promoted to Deputy Prin-cipal at Dalrose Primary School in 2009.The school now welcomes him as to newlyappointed principal.

Ebola is currently ravaging western Af-rica and is reported to be spreading to
other countries as it is highly contagious.The current Ebola outbreak has killed
nearly 700 people, mostly in Guinea, SierraLeone and Liberia. However, a recent travel-ler who died of the disease in Lagos, Nigeria,has highlighted the ease with which the dis-ease could spread.
Lewis Brown, the information minister ofLiberia, was quoted as telling Reuters that“(the disease) is a major public health emer-gency.”
He said that Ebola is fierce and deadly andexpressed fears that it may continue spread-ing.
It is just a plane flight awayTheoretically an outbreak anywhere on
the globe is just a plane flight or boat rideaway, from countries like South Africa, thatreceives a regular visitor influx from WestAfrica.
These include illegal immigrants, asylumseekers, business and leisure travellers andcontract workers.
Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has saidthat there is no need for South Africans topanic.
“Precautions were being taken to preventthe virus from entering the country. Surveil-lance activities are in place and are extreme-ly effective.”
Deadliest outbreakThe current outbreak is the deadliest ever
on record, and is currently not under control.One of the leading doctors battling the dis-
ease in Liberia died on Sunday after contract-ing the disease earlier in the week.
Ebola kills up to 90% of those it infects; thisrate is especially high in countries with poorhealthcare and a populace unwilling to re-ceive treatment, as is the case in the afore-
mentioned African nations.Aside from its deadliness, Ebola is also
highly contagious. The disease has an incu-bation period of up to 21 days and takes be-tween 1 and 2 weeks to kill sufferers oncesymptoms begin to manifest themselves.
There is currently no cure for the illness.
How is Ebola transmitted?Ebola is spread by coming into contact
with the bodily fluids of infected animals orindividuals, or people who died from the dis-ease.
This includes sweat, blood and saliva.The infectious potential of the disease is
such that coming into contact with a singledrop of sweat or spit from an infected person- and then transmitting the virus to your noseor mouth when you touch these organs - couldcause a completely healthy person to becomeinfected.
It is also often transmitted to medical per-sonnel via hypodermic needles used in treat-ing patients with Ebola fever, and to lab per-sonnel who handle samples.
According to the WHO, animals that maycarry the illness include gorillas, monkeys,fruit bats and porcupines. Infected fruit batsin particular have been known to travel asfar as New Zealand and do not show anysymptoms of the disease.– Source: www.health24.com

The Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre islocated in the heart of Uitenhage’s central business district andoffers programmes which target educators and learners in STEM(science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Thecentre offers in-house and external programmes designed tobuild enthusiasm and an affinity to these subjects. The centre is aproject of the Uitenhage Despatch Development Initiative (UDDI),a special purpose vehicle established to facilitate socio-economicdevelopment within the Uitenhage-Despatch area of the NelsonMandela Bay Municipality.
The UDDI seeks to appoint dynamic, creative thinkers with apassion for development, economic and social transformation tojoin its team.
Reporting the UDDI Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the candidate will beresponsible for the management of the Nelson Mandela Bay Science andTechnology Centre, including the effective supervision and mentoring ofstaff, managing assets and resources of the centre.
Primary duties1. Providing strategic direction and managing operations, marketing,
financial management, fundraising, public/community relations,programmes development and implementation, human resourcemanagement, and physical expansion.
2. Building a strong donor base and ensuring the sustainability of thecentre through the development of diverse income streams.
3. Developing and maintaining a high level of partner and stakeholderinvolvement and engagement, particularly with provincial andnational departments.
4. Managing assets and resources of the centre and ensuringcompliance to environmental, health and safety standards.
5. Promoting and supporting the professional development ofteam members through effective coaching and performancemanagement.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
• Minimum qualification is a post-graduate degree/diploma in
commerce or education
• Masters in Business Administration would be advantageous
• Demonstrable track record in fundraising initiatives
• Ability to initiate and implement multiple projects simultaneously
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail
• Proficiency with the Microsoft office package
