opportunity for the market to grow tremen-dously in future.A total of 135 stalls were present at themar-

ket day offering a wide diversity of productson sale from furniture, decor items, clothing,jewellery, recycled products, plants andherbs to arts and crafts.“The food court had stalls offering a gastro-

nomic feast with items like cheese sticks,corn dogs, burgers, cheese grillers, saladsand fried chicken, potjiekosandothermouth-watering eats and treats.”The market was enjoyed by the masses sit-

ting under trees listening to music of GerryClaasen and Chantelle Bosch. Also presentwas Animals in Wonderland with their rep-tiles and animals as well as High Noon DogSchool who gave an entertaining dog show.“We would like to thank all the stand hold-

ers for their support and understanding dur-ing our relocation and also our sponsors for

This year’s Wings andWheels Festival at theUitenhageAirfieldwill be in the form of a fly-inwith a showcase of aircraft, aerobatics andentertainment.

“There will be gliders, motor-gliders, para-gliders, motor para-gliders, light aircraft aswell as a Harvard and an L39 Jet to name afew. Festival-goers will also be offered the op-portunity to enjoy flips in helicopters as wellas other aircraft,” said Lourens Kruger,

events organiser of the Wings and WheelsFestival.Other activities include displays of new

and veteran motor vehicles, motorcycles,trikes, 4x4 vehicles and a 9km trail run aswell as 4.5km fun run on the airfield.

Furthermore there will be entertainmentlike live music, an entertainment park, sky-diving tandem jumps and a variety of stallswhichwill vary from food and craft to exhibi-tor stalls.“The idea of the festivalwas formulated out

of an idea of a fund-raiser for the UitenhageAirfield Association and the GereformeerdeKerk Uitenhage. The aim is to raise funds forthe Drostdy Protective Workshop for Dis-abled Persons as well as the UitenhageSPCA,” said Kruger.

Cycling legend Martin Nefdt has reassem-bled his 1967 Springbok track team and

participated in a 55km cycling event in aidof abused and abandoned animals.

The group of approximately 30 sponsoredriders which consisted of several local celeb-rities and sporting personalities joined theteam to ride in The Herald VW Cycle Touras a fundraiser for the Uitenhage SPCA.“It was fantastic. Absolutely fabulous to

see the support of the people,” said MartinNefdt, who was inspired to cycle for a goodcause by his brother Louis, who is chairmanof the East London SPCA.“They are battling financially as state

funding is pretty poor.”The group raised funds and donated a trail-

er load full of non-perishable food.Leading the bunch on a tandem was Nefdt

(65) who runs the local Puma agency togetherwith seven-time SA sprint champion WillieMarx (70).In their glory days, the former SA champi-

ons and rivals performed before capacitycrowds at theWestbourneOval, breaking nu-merous individual records between them.Nefdt and Marx were also the last Spring-

bokpair to race the tandemevent at theworldtrack championships before SA was isolatedfrom international competition.They were joined by team-mates Johan

Nicol (66) who was the first SA rider to breakthe five-minute barrier in the 4 000m pursuit,and former national sprint and road champi-on Jack Lester (66).“Next year we want to do this again, but

we want to have our own category cycling50km for fun and in aid of Uitenhage SPCA.No racing. Just cycling, stopping for refresh-ments and then take the road again,” saidNefdt.During the handover of the food and funds,

Koos Kroukamp from the Uitenhage SPCAannounced that Martin Nefdt would be hon-oured as one of the Uitenhage SPCA’s ambas-sadors forhis efforts inkeeping thisnon-prof-itable organisation’s doors open.

Muir College Boys’ High School Inter-houseGala swimming records, some of which haveremained unchanged since 1987, were bet-tered during the 2014 gala held at MuirCollege on the 12 February.

Alaric Basson who held the record for boththe 200m and 100m breaststroke bettered bothhis times this year.

In the 200m breaststroke he improved histime of 2:28:96 (2013) with a time of 2:25:25. He

also improved on the 100m breaststrokerecord of 1:11:54 (2013) with a convincing1:08:31.

Alard Basson created a time of 56:78 for the100m butterfly as there was no existingrecord.

He has set a benchmark time that will behard to beat in future. He also bettered hisown record of 27:37 (2013) in the 50m butterflywith a near 26:71 time and in the 50m freestyle

Alard broke his 2013 record time of 27:87 witha final time of 25.81.

The Sutherland relay team consisted ofAlard and Alaric Basson, Nizaam Kafaar andJason Muller. They swam the 4X50m medleyrelay and set a new record at 2:07:17.

The swimmers then proceeded to break a

Muir College Boy’s High School, swam the2014 River Mile. Alaric came in strongly, tak-ing fourth position.

Nizaam, who previously held a position inthe top 10, decided to swim with his six yearold brother this year and did not compete fora position in the top 10.

One can never be too old to learn to play ten-nis. This is according to Charles Crause,who will conduct tennis coaching at theMagennis Park courts as from next week.

These coaching lessons will be held onMonday or Wednesday mornings from 09:00to 11:00 at the Drostdy Park Tennis Clubwhich is situated next to the lovely Magen-nis Park.

Coaching will be provided for the firsthour afterwhichRoundRobinwill be playedfor the second hour. The action starts onMonday, 10 March. All interested are mostwelcome.

The East Cape Off-Road Club (ECOC)kicked of the yearwith their first roundof the Data Scout Challenge over thepast weekend.

The day brought forth exciting ac-tion, with two new junior competitors.In the junior class the father and sonteam, JP and Etienne Smit, took firstplace. In the senior class, André Ferrei-ra proved to be the best of the day. Over-all the day was a huge success with agood turn-out.
