WELCOMEAs we commence another academic year, we are pleased to make available a new issue of the Library newsletter.

Major changes to our resource discovery systems have been introduced over the summer and are highlighted here, together

with significant expansion of our online guides and tutorials, now offering a wider range of subject, topic and research guides and running on an updated platform.

Our welcome for new students is a major Library effort each year, with planning commencing around Easter time, and it is also an increasingly collaborative venture, working with other support units. We outline what we have to offer this year A range of other online and physical space enhancements and service developments are also summarised and we wish all readers well as the new semester begins.

Our introduction to Library services for new students

Welcome to UCD Library!This year, the UCD Library Orientation Team has created a range of exciting new initiatives, as well as offering our tried and tested ones, to welcome all new students to UCD Library services.

The New Students DeskA crucial offering is our well-established New Students Information Desk. Situated in the James Joyce Library from 8 – 19th September, this will offer a quick reference point for new students to ask questions and get advice. We will have plenty of orientation goodies for students too at all of our libraries.

Peer Mentor ToursWe are getting huge support from the Peer Mentors again this year. All programmes will be brought to the Library for a visit with their Peer Mentor. This is thanks to the work of the Student Advisor team.

UCD Library Welcome App A newly designed UCD Library Welcome App allows quick access to the key content any new student would want. Using the app, visitors can go to our New Students Webpage, view our classes schedule, use our chat service, connect via social media, enter a Library competition or access a subject guide to get a start on essential reading. The app will be available for both Android and iPhone devices.

James Joyce Library Virtual TourIn conjunction with UCD Media Services we have created an interactive James Joyce Library Virtual Tour. Students can virtually walk through the four levels of the library, view spaces from 360 degrees and get additional information about crucial collections and services. The tour will help new, and even current students physically orient themselves around the James Joyce Library.

Coming Soon! Self-Service Laptop Loans at James Joyce Library Our very popular laptop loans service, offered at Health Sciences and James Joyce Libraries, will shortly benefit from an increase in the number of laptops at James Joyce Library and a move to a self-service issuing system there. Users will then be able to borrow and return laptops when the staffed service desks are not operating, such as later in the evening, a major enhancement due to go live during September.

New Students WebpagesWe have a completely re-designed New Students Webpage. This is available for desktops and mobile devices and has been designed to ensure accessibility for all visitors. There is core information new students require such as online tutorials, Library study spaces, training, tours, twitter and other social media, the virtual tour, and our two competitions: a #ucdlibpic photo competition (2nd – 26th September); and a “borrow a book” competition (29th September – 17th October).

CollaborationWe continue to support the Mature Students’ Writing Academy, the International Fair, and Access programmes. We are supporting the Welcome Matt programme, running special support sessions and highlighting key parts of our Life Skills Collection. We will also be taking part in the Grads Connect event.

Our new resource discovery tool

Introducing OneSearchIt has been our goal for a long time to introduce a search tool through which users can explore nearly all of our content (print and e-books, print and e-journals, databases, digital objects, open access UCD articles and more) via a single interface, and the implementation of a web scale discovery service moves us a long way towards the achievement of that goal.

On August 12th we launched a completely new system for discovering and searching across the Library collection.

The Summon 2.0 technology used in the new system, badged locally as OneSearch, is widely used by academic libraries in Ireland and across the world.

Available from the Library home page and within UCD Connect, as well as directly at ucd.summon.serialssolutions.com, the new system offers a single search box, providing instant access to the breadth of scholarly content that is held by UCD Library — this includes digital and print formats, audio and video, databases, single articles and entire e-journals and every format in between.

A wide variety of material is initially retrieved, and a range of filters is then applied to reduce the results set. Examples of these filters are: local Library catalogue holdings; full text items only; particular date ranges only; titles within certain disciplines only; particular formats. For those looking for a particular known item, the Advanced search feature can be used to search using particular indexes such as title or author, and to apply Boolean logic functions.

Results can easily be saved into a set for printing, email or citing in one of six popular formats.

Whilst we believe that the new system will be popular with users you can still avail of the catalogue, or access listings of our eJournal titles and holdings or of our databases: these alternative search interfaces can be found on the Finding Information page of our website, and within UCD Connect in the channel beneath the OneSearch box on the Library page.

Library Classes Calendar ucd.libcal.com/events

Veterinary Medicine Library Seating & Signage UpdateFollowing on from our update of the notices and signage at Richview Library, we are pleased to report that a similar update is nearing completion at the Veterinary Medicine Library, replacing some very old signage with a fresh new look.

Our Library classes are now all presented to users in a calendar display. Library classes do not require booking: just attend at the date, time and venue indicated.

Hang the Bankers!

Banking controversies are by no means new to this country

Jonathan Swift’s A Short View of the State of Ireland, published in 1728, proposed, as a solution to Ireland’s economic woes, that a law be enacted to “hang up half a Dozen Bankers every Year”

“The Last speech and dying words” broadside pictured here is a satire on the failure to form the Bank of Ireland in 1721. Though Swift’s authorship is not proven, he would certainly have agreed with the sentiments expressed. It parodies a popular form of publication of the time which sensationalised the last words of condemned criminals, protesting their innocence.

This broadside and others on the same theme came to light recently during the conservation of 18th century legal and official publications. All this material is available for consultation in UCD Library Special Collections.

A second successful year with a 35% increase in registrations

Leaving Cert Study Scheme This summer we once again opened our doors to Leaving Certificate students, enabling them to use our plentiful study spaces during this quiet, off-peak time period.

Following on from the success of last year’s scheme, Library access was offered from the 19th May to the 20th June. The fee for one month’s access was twenty euros, while for students attending DEIS schools, access was free of charge.

This year online booking was made available as an option on the University website. This allowed students, or their parents, to pay in advance using a debit/credit card in order to secure their place.

On arrival, those who had pre-booked simply presented their confirmation email and photographic ID. They were then issued with a pre-prepared Library access card. For those who did not use the online booking facility, an application form was

available at the Admissions Desk, where they could pay in cash for the same facility.

In addition to library access, a further service was offered this year by the Maths Support Centre. From May 19th to June 5th maths support was offered in the Library Link. This cost twenty five euros (in addition to the €20 Library access fee) and was free to DEIS school students. Students had access to experienced tutors of mathematics for three hours of supervision, when they could ask questions or seek advice on particular problems. There was a significant increase in the number of students participating in the Leaving Certificate Scheme, with students continuing to apply throughout the month-long study period. The total number of students this year was 657 which is an almost 35% increase in attendance on last year’s total of 488 students.

The total revenue generated by the Leaving Certificate Scheme this summer was a 69% increase on the previous year, due to take up of the Maths Support Centre add-on option and more students paying the full access fee.

More power sockets provided at James Joyce Library

We have increased the number of study spaces with access to power a number of times over recent years. In keeping with the many requests we continue to receive from our users for increased access to power sockets on the study desks in our libraries, we are pleased to let you know that access to power has been added to a number of desks in the James Joyce Library this summer.

These desks are located on Level 1 in the Short Loan area, on Level 2 in the study area adjacent to the Confucius Collection, and on Level 3 in the study area on the lake side of the floor.

In all, we are adding access to power to a further 182 desks.

A range of updates to the Library website

Library Website RefreshA number of adjustments were made to the Library website over the summer, working with Arekibo, the web agency who designed our current website. As well as various minor adjustments and the introduction of a cookie notification banner, the following are of particular importance to users.

Site Navigation and SearchWe have moved all of the main site navigation and search options, together with links to key communication channels, to the header of every page of the website. We now offer there: tabs showing the main sections of the website with improved drop down menus (flyouts) for quick access to the site content; a site map; a site index; a search box which searches content from the websites and also the platforms hosting our guides, classes calendar and room booking system; options to view opening hours; options to contact us, chat or submit feedback.

A Revised Home PageThe home page search box had to be updated as we introduced our new resource discovery tool OneSearch.

In addition to that, there is extra functionality on the page now: our very regularly updated twitter stream which provides instant access to Library developments as they occur; a new easily adjusted left menu on the page to highlight to users some key self-service actions available to them; a new highlight box on the page for flexible use, currently focussed on our our new student welcome; and re-introduction of Library chat to the home page.

Our range of online subject, research and topic guides grows, using an updated platform

Library Guides Galore Over the summer a great deal of work has been done to expand our range of online guides and tutorials for self-service use by students, and for embedding into teaching programmes. The following are some of the highlights:

• Migrating to a new version of our main platform for online guides, which offers new features and a crisper look and feel

• Producing a full set of 40 subject starter guides, which highlight “best bet” databases, websites, eJournals and eBooks, show students which citing style to use in each subject, and include other subject starter content

• Expanding our range of topic guides, adding such themes as EndNote, Standards & Patents and Systematic Review to the range

• Revising a number of our tutorials in the light of our change of resource discovery system

• Producing some guides and tutorials on how to use the new OneSearch service

• Producing a complete A-Z index of all of our online guides, from simple printable pdf formats to interactive tutorials

• Developing a single online guide for users to locate the best online Library learning materials for them

• Producing a guide on how to embed Library training materials and resources into your own Blackboard or other online teaching platform

Connecting our Collections

Library SpotlightA small display area has been brought into use in James Joyce Library, with a fast-changing selection of books relating to national and international events and prizes, to UCD authors, and to UCD initiatives. We have already used this to focus on the titles featured in Books that Define Ireland (co-author Bryan Fanning features on our cover), a selection of WWI literature and the IMPAC shortlist for 2014, in conjunction with Dublin City Library and Archive who donated the titles. We will in coming months feature the Life Skills Collection as part of Orientation, a display on “Writers with Pride” in conjunction with the School of Social Justice, the best business titles of the year in conjunction with the Quinn School of Business, a display on Brian Friel in collaboration with the Dublin Theatre Festival.
