Reasons for windshield damages

• A windshield consists of two layers of glass, this is the reason why windshields do not cave in or fall apart upon sustaining damage

• A majority of the damage occurs as a result of objects hitting the outside layer of the glass

• The objects that most commonly strike windshields are rocks that the tires of other vehicles kick off the road

• The damage on the windshield can be of different types; the position of the damage determines the type of damage

• For example, a damage that occurs at least two inches from the edge may cause a chip or floater crack, but any damage closer to the edge is more likely to produce a long crack

Types of windshield cracks

• Bull’s-eye – It is round and has concentric circles with a clear point of impact. This damage is easy to fix only when addressed early on, but delay makes it more difficult due to dirt and oil that accumulates inside the crack.

• Combination break – When more than one type of damage occurs on the windshield, it usually results in a chip with multiple cracks making it extremely hard to repair completely

Types of windshield cracks

• Edge crack – This starts somewhere within 2 inches of the edge of the glass. It can spread across the windshield and can spread in both glass layers. Edge cracks generally require windshield replacement

• Floater crack – It begins in the center of the windshield and can extend across the entire surface

• Half-moon– This is a half circle resulting from the blunt impact of an object, usually a rock. This damage is easier to clean and repair.

Solution for damage

• If the part that is damaged is in the line of sight of the driver, it’s better to replace the glass.

• Choosing to fix such damage could cause distortions in the glass which is dangerous when in the line of sight.
