    VERVOLG VAN BLADSY 1

Dokters kon daarin slaag om haar hart

weer aan die gang te kry, maar sy is om 13:00

die volgende dag breindood verklaar en die

masjien is afgeskakel, het n ontroosbare

    John vertel.

Volgens die Bonds het Gysman n die on-

geluk gestop, Nadia opgetel, op sy agtersit-

plek gesit en hospitaal toe gejaagwaar hy la-

    ter in hegtenis geneem is.

Daar was selfs swart rub-

bermerke in Nadia se bors ingebrand, het

    n betraande Adri ges.

    Intussen het huldeblyke uit omliggende

    gemeenskappe ingestroom.

Ek weet sy was julle suurstof. Sy was die

helderste ster, my hart is stukkend, het Ilse

Joubert, Nadia se onderwyser by die Laer-

    skool Aristea in Kraaifontein, ges.

Sy was n kind wat die lewe aangegryp

het en in haar kort agt jaarmeer ingepas het

    as die meeste grootmense.

    verdere ondersoek.

    Die beskuldigde se prokureur, Bradley

Muller, wou nie kommentaar lewer nie.

    Thembi Gwe, woordvoerder van die

    Kraaifontein-polisie, het bevestig dat die

saak ondersoek word en dat verdere verkla-

rings deur twee ooggetuies afgel sal word.

Brackenfell police last week busted a couple

of alleged drug dealers at a service station in

Old Paarl Road en route to Bellville.

Following up a tip-off on Monday night,

    Sergeants Rouan Scheepers, Johan Hansen,

Mariano Gioio and Stephan Wolfaardt ar-

rived at the filling station at about 21:30 and

    immediately spotted the suspect vehicle

parked near the forecourt, says police

    spokesperson Warrant Officer Erica Crous.

There were two men in the car, and upon

searching them police found five grams of tik

and two mandrax tablets in their possession.

They also found a big bag of dagga in the vehi-

cle, along with R5 900 in cash.

The two men aged 35 and 29, both foreign

nationals, were arrested for possession of ille-

gal drugs. The suspects appeared in the Kuils

    River Magistrates Court.

ie toilette en storte by die gewilde

    Jack Mullerpark word opgeknap.

Dit sal veral goeie nuus wees vir

die gereelde drawwers en hardlopers wat

    Saterdagoggende aan die gewilde park

    run deelneem.

S s Leonore van der Walt, wyk 2 se

    stadsraadslid.

Di distrikspark is besig om te ontwik-

kel in n sieraad wat al hoe meer besoek

word. Die park run trek steeds by die 500

deelnemers op Saterdae, hoewel n soort-

gelyke pretdraf by n ander terrein in die

bruik beskikbaar wees. Sy voeg by: Die

    uitgrawings om die Elsieskraalrivier om

die huidige lelike sementkanaal te ver-

fraai na n natuurlike rivierloop, is tans

gestaak, omdat die watervlak te hoog ge-

raak het. Ons hoop dat die werk weer aan

die einde van Oktober kan begin. Hoewel

wegbly. Die parkeerterrein sal egter weer

oopgestel word, wat groot verligting sal

    bring op Saterdagoggende wanneer draw-

wers sukkel om parkeerplek te kry, het

    sy ges.

    naweek was dit weer die

    beurt van cliviageesdriftiges

    om hul pragtige blomme te

kom uitstal. Die arena in die

    Tygervalleiwinkelsentrum

was in rep en roer, terwyl

    die beoordelaars die beste

    clivia op die skou uitgesoek

    en aangewys het.

Local town councillors last week raised

their concerns over safety issues at a bar in

    Brackenfell Industria and announced their

intentions to have the current trading

hours re-examined by the liquor board.

Die Kuiergat, as the bar is known, made

news headlines a few weeks ago after a

shooting on 23 August claimed the life of a

    21-year-old Kraaifontein man. Three other

patrons were injured in the shooting.

A 29-year-old suspect was later arrested

in Scottsdene and theBrackenfell police are

investigating the possibility that the shoot-

ing was related to gang activities in the

    area.

An application to have the establish-

ments trading hours extended to 04:00 in

the morning was tabled at the Citys Berg-

dal subcouncil for consideration last week.

    Although the Citys health directorate

    supports the application, ward councillors

    unanimously declined to support it.

    Marian Nieuwoudt, ward councillor for

    Brackenfell, said the establishment was

clearly too close to an area known for nega-

tive social behaviour linked to drug and al-

    cohol abuse.

After the recent gunfight there, it would

be very risky to support this application,

    she said.

Roxanne Hoorn agreed, saying she could

not believe the audacity of this business

owner to apply for extended trading hours

if he could not even keep his own house

    clean.

    Supporting his colleagues, subcouncil

    chairman Grant Twigg subsequently re-

quested that the City obtains a report from

theBrackenfell police to forward a crime re-

port to the liquor board to petition them to

reconsider the current trading hours, with

a view to possibly curb it.

After the shooting, we definitely have

reason to be concerned, he said.

He added that the subcouncil will also re-

quest closer monitoring of the establish-

ment by the local police and law enforce-

    ment unit.

er perfect pitch and angelic song

landed her a spot in the Top 10 of

    Idols SA season 11, but

    its her adamant stand against

    bullying that has made Nadia

    Herbsts voice heard in the

    northern suburbs of Cape

    Town.

    As an ambassador for Faba

    (FightingAgainst Bullying and

    Abuse), this 20-year-old song-

stress, who grew up in Durban-

    ville and Brackenfell, invests

    much of her time visiting

    schools, universities and com-

    munities around the country to

    create awareness about this se-

    rious issue.

    Our ambassadors understand this is-

sue and share their own life stories to

help people understand the effects bully-

    ing can have on some-

    ones life. It is vital

    that we focus not only

    on the person being

    bullied, but also the

    roles of the bystand-

ers and why it is that

    people bully, says

    Morn Marais, Mr

    South Africa

    2014/2015 and founder

    of Faba, speaking on

    behalf of Nadia, while

she is out of reach for

    the media battling it

    out in the Idols com-

    petition in Johannes-

    burg.

    Nadia,whostarted

    singing at the age of

    13, has a passion for

    the less fortunate and

    believes in inspiring

    others to rise above

    any circumstances in

    their lives, he said.

    On Saturday Nadia

saw to it that a 16-year-old girl at theDur-

    banville Childrens Home received a

brand new guitar to help her live out her

passion for music, after Nadia came to

    hear of her plight.

    Amber (not her full name)

    recently arrived at the

home. With her love for mu-

sic, she started lessons a few

years ago, but never had the

    means of financing her own

    instrument.

    I am totally over-

    whelmed with this kind ges-

ture. Music is not only my

passion, but it helps me to

    express myself, said

    Amber.

    Cancer huge success

    DESIRE RORKE

    @dezzierorke

The sixth annual Pink Lady Crafts for Can-

cer event has never been more successful

    than this year.

In the first year, only 25 women attended

mostly because we begged them to come

whereas this year we had waiting lists for

    tickets, says Theresa Richards, marketing

consultant at Top Fruit who along with True

Cape initiated this event to raise funds for

    the TygerbergHospital breast cancer clinics

    transport fund.

The prestigious event was held at DAria

wine estate on Saturday and they managed

to raise R67 000 this year.

Professor Justus Apffelstaedt, head of the

breast clinic at Tygerberg Hospital, ex-

plained why this initiative was so invalua-

    ble.

Many of our patients live on government

grants of about R1 200 per month. A round

trip to Tygerberg hospital will cost them up

to R150. The choice between having enough

to eat for the family and transport for therapy

    is stark.

    Liza Matthews, marketing manager at

Pink Lady, said it was for this reason they

    chose this cause.

Although treatment costs are covered by

government, some patients cannot afford the

transport cost to and from the hospital for

    regular radiotherapy sessions, she said.

    Apffelstaedt added this yearwas especially

auspicious for him as itmarked his 20th year

    as head of this clinic.

More importantly, he informed women of

the latest technology in the field of breast

    cancer treatment.

One of only two automated breast volume

scanning machines on the entire African

continent arrived four weeks ago. A probe

scans over the entire breast, during which it

records images that are sent to a computer

    for 3D reconstruction, he says.

Not only is this method more effective to

detect cancerous lesions in dense breast tis-

sue of especially younger women, but it is al-

so not as painful as a normalmammograph,

    he said.

After learning the art of lino printing from

Lizel Cloete, craft editor for Ideas magazine,

the women were treated to the heavenly pi-

ano sounds of virtuoso Rocco de Villiers fol-

    lowed by a three-course meal.

ellville police have reason to feel

proud at least 12 reasons, that is aft-

er a known serial rapist was tracked

    down and arrested last week.

The crime prevention unit of this police

department wasted no time to find the 31-

year-old Gugulethu man suspected of rap-

    ing at least 12 women.

The suspect would lure his victims in the

Bellville area with the promise of employ-

ment and then continue to overwhelm and

    assault them.

A breakthrough in the case came just a

week before the suspect was arrested last

    Thursday.

Brigadier Andr van Dyk, acting station

commander at the Bellville police station,

last Friday issued a statement congratulat-

ing his officers on this outstanding achieve-

    ment.

He tells of the build-up to the capture: A

week of dedication of hard work led to the

arrest of a serial rapist that committed 12

rapes in Bellville, and is possibly linked to

several other cases in surrounding areas.

    The suspect would apprehend women

standing in Voortrekker Road looking for

a job, and offer them a job at an undertaker.

He would then ask them to accompany him

to the building that is situated close to the

Bellville railway line, Van Dyk said.

He would then drag them in the bushes

    nearby and rape themat knifepoint.Mainly

the womens cellphones and cash were tak-

    en.

Van Dyk said the suspect made a big mis-

    take during the last incident.

During the investigation of the last rape

    reported, the womans stolen cellphonewas

tracked and the suspect was followed for a

week by the Family Violence Child Abuse

and Sexual Assault Unit (FCS) and Crime

    Prevention members of Bellville, after

which he was arrested at his residential ad-

dress in Gugulethu, Van Dyk said.

n feesganger op een van die beto-

    gers gespoeg het.

    Di voorval het plaasgevind by

n vleisfees by die NGKerk Stellen-

    berg voorverledeVrydag op 11 Sep-

    tember toe n ligte konfrontasie

    ontstaan het.

Die aktiviste het ook betoog by n

    vleisfees hierdie afgelope Saterdag

op 18 September by die NG Kerk

Sonstraal te midde van die geur

    van gebraaide lamstjops.

    Lamsvleis, ontbeende boude, rol-

rib, afval, lewermuise en biltong is

    by di gewilde feeste verkoop.

Van die aktiviste van die organi-

    sasie 269life South Africa Cape

Town het luidkeels uit die Bybel

    aangehaal. n Skaapspeelding wat

die aktiviste aan n houtkruis ge-

spyker het, is deur sommige fees-

    gangers as onsmaaklik bestempel.

Bykans al die twee kerke se ad-

    vertensieborde om hul vleisfeeste

te adverteer, is enkele dae voor die

    onderskeie feeste oornag van

    lamppale in die omringende woon-

    buurte verwyder.

Die vleisfeeste deur die NG ker-

    ke Stellenberg en Sonstraal is

saam met NG kerke uit die Karoo,

    onderskeidelik die NG Kerk Vos-

    burg en Laingsburg, aangebied.

    Volgens Gretha Fick, organi-

    seerder vandieVleisfees by dieNG

Kerk Sonstraal, het hul skade van

    R8 032 gely toe sowat 180 plakkate

    verledeMaandagnag van die lamp-

pale in die buurt verdwyn het.

Hoewel daar nog geen bewyse is

dat dit die handewerk van die akti-

viste is nie, is hulle van niemand

anders bewus wat teen hul Vleis-

fees gekant as nie, het sy ges. Sy

    was by die Durbanville-polisie om

    n klag te l.

    Melanie Thomet van die organi-

sasie, het ontken dat dit hulle was

    wat die plakkate verwyder het.

Dit was vanjaar die derde agter-

eenvolgende jaar dat daar by die

    Vleisfees betoog word.

Thomet, wat haarself met n rooi

vloeistof gesmeer het om die bloed

    van geslagde diere te verteenwoor-

dig, het hier en daar reaksie uitge-

    lok.

    Die spoegvoorval bydieNGKerk

    Stellenberg het plaasgevind toe

een van die feesgangers met haar

gaan praat het. Die voorval is op vi-

deo opgeneem en op Facebook ge-

    plaas. Die man, vermoedelik van

    Vosburg, het daarna weggehard-

loop en is deur n ander man inge-

haal en na die betogers gebring om

om verskoning te vra, maar n

    woordewisseling het tussen di

    man en die aktiviste ontstaan.

Bernie van Wyk, opsigter by die

NG Kerk Stellenberg, het ges hy

het die gepratery tussen die man-

ne en die betogers gesien, maar

    nie die spoegvoorval nie. Volgens

hom is meer as 100 borde oornag

    van lamppale verwyder.

    Thomet het op hul Facebook-

blad ges hulle is by die Stellen-

berg-fees van meet af deur die

    Christene aangevat. Hulle is on-

der meer ook toeparkeer en n

groep kinders het hulle getart met

    hartelose slagspreuke, terwyl

    sommige feesgangers voor hulle

kom staan en vleis eet het.

Volgens haar het hulle n klag

    van crimen injuria en aanranding

    by die Durbanville-polisie aanhan-

gig gaan maak na die eerste Vleis-

    fees.

Ds. Callie Visagie van die NG

Kerk Stellenberg het ges dis die

aktiviste se goeie reg om beswaar

    te maak.

Ons leef in n vrye samelewing.

Dis net jammer as mense nie met

    respek teenoor mekaar optree nie.

Ek het nie die voorval gesien nie,

maar skaammy vir mense wat nie

    ander se siening respekteer nie,

    het hy ges.

Thomet het op navraag aan Ty-

gerBurger ges hulle betoog by die

    kerke, omdat die kerke hierdie

feeste hou ten koste van onskuldi-

    ge wesens.Ons dink dis ver-

    keerd. Dit skend die omgewing,

asook diere weens die wrede boer-

    derypraktyke en deurdat hulle

    slegs as kommoditeite beskou

word. Daar is nie so-iets soos pyn-

lose slagting nie. Vleis word ook

verbind met n rits menslike siek-

    tes soos kanker, hartsiektes, diabe-

tes en osteoporose, het sy ges.

Ons glo ook dit is in stryd met

die boodskap van God en Christen-

dom, wat een van deernis en nie

    massaslagting is nie.

    Op n vraag oorhoekomhulle nie

ook by ander plekke waar mense

    vleis eet, betoognie, hetThomet ge-

s dat hulle al by verskeie slaghui-

    se onder meer in Bellville,

    Groenpunt, Table View en Stellen-

bosch en ook by n restaurant in

    Kaapstad betoog.

    Die organisasie Beauty Without

Cruelty South Africa was by die

    twee vorige betogings betrokke,

maar was nie vanjaar betrokke nie

en sal ooknie indie toekomsby sul-

    ke geleenthede betrokke wees nie,

    het Toni Brockhoven, mediabe-

    ampte van Beauty Without Cruel-

    ty, aan TygerBurger op navraag

    laat weet.

    Betoging ontaard toe spoeg spat

Melanie Thomet (regs) van die organisasie 269life South Africa Cape Town is

the Friends of Bracken Nature Re-

serve in partnership with the City of

Cape Town, is gearing up for the annual

Spring Day event to be held tomorrow on

    Heritage Day (Thursday 24 September).

This fun-filled family event has become

a tradition at the Bracken Nature Reserve

since September 2006. Each year the re-

serve fires the six-pounder cannon at 12

noon, and one or two lucky-draw winners

are given the chance to fire the smaller can-

    non.

    This years entertainment will include

the Tiervlei Riel Trappers (a traditional

Khoi-San dance group), a snake and reptile

exhibition, a discovery race, and wine-tast-

ing by Val du Charron. In addition, there

will be a number of local food stalls.

    We invite all surrounding communities

to attend the event and join in on the spring

festivities. The guided nature walks during

the event offer the perfect opportunity for

residents to enjoy the beauty of the reserve

and see the spring flowers right on their

doorstep, says the Citys Mayco member

    for energy, environmental and

    spatial planning, Johan van der

    Merwe.

    The Bracken Nature Reserve

is currently covered in a lovely

blanket of Cape daisies and other

    spring flowers and visitors may

also be lucky enough to encoun-

ter some of the wildlife on the

    day, which includes the Cape

    grysbok, steppe buzzard and our

    resident jackal buzzard, he

    adds.

    Residents who are interested

    in participating in the discovery

race are requested to register as

a team of at least three people in

order to be eligible for the race.

Participants will be required to apply

their knowledge of the reserve and fitness

skills in a range of challenges to stand a

chance to win. Throughout these challen-

ges, participants will be exposed to various

sections of the reserve while having lots of

fun at the same time. Registration will take

place at the reserve at 08:30 on the day of

the festival and the race will commence at

    09:30.

Bookings can be made prior to the event

by contacting the Bracken Nature Reserve

    office on 021 444 0380 and a maximum of 21

participants will be able to take part.

Residents can look forward to various

competitions, including a raffle with excit-

ing prizes to be won such as wines, meal

    vouchers and a jewellery set.

    When youve discovered that

    your vehicle has been broken

    into, please remember the

    following information:

    In order for the fingerprint

    technician to obtain finger-

prints from the vehicle it is

    important to not disturb the

area on the vehicle where the

    vehicle was broken into.

Do not wash the vehicle or

    repair the window prior to

    fingerprints taken.

    The disturbance of the area

    where a possible fingerprint

    could be obtained from might

    have a negative impact on

    linking the fingerprint to a

    person whose fingerprints are

    registered as that belonging to

    a previous suspect linked to

    other cases.

    In order to avoid your

    vehicle from being broken into,

follow this simple rule: Do not

    leave any valuables in your

    vehicle.

    Car broken into?

    Met verwysing No concerns at

    fatal intersection (TB, 16

    September), rakende die

    sogenaamde noodlottige

    kruising te Frans Conradie-ry-

    laan en Paradysstraat, wil ek

nie n debat voer nie, maar

    slegs die volgende uitwys.

Dit is tragies en hartseer vir

die ouers en maats wat n jong

kind en vriend verloor het. Ook

    s vir die onskuldige motoris

    wat betrokke was. Ek gebruik

die pad gereeld ten alle tye van

die dag en vind absoluut niks

    verkeerd met die tydsreling

    van die verkeerseine nie.

Ek wil dit ook noem dat

    sedert die installering van die

    kameras by die betrokke

    kruising, gedra die motoriste

hul redelik goed en was dit

    volgens my kennis die eerste

    noodlottige ongeluk.

    Vir die veiligheid van die

    kinders en alle voetgangers:

Daar is elke dag n puntsman

    aan diens ongeveer 200 meter

    vanwaar die ongeluk gebeur

    het by die skool.

    Hierdie puntsman is elke dag

aan diens voor en n skool en

    somtyds in gure weersomstan-

    dighede nie vir haar gesond-

heid nie, maar om die skoliere

veilig oor die besige pad te

help. My eerlike opinie is dat

die oorsaak van die ongeluk n

    gebrek aan opvoeding was, wie

    ookal daarvoor verantwoordelik

    is.

    Wanneer die horskool in die

    middag uitkom, is dit ook

    skrikwekkend hoe die hor-

    skool-leerders die besige pad

    kruis sonder om gebruik te

    maak van die verkeerslig-be-

    heerde voetgangerkruising.

    in total agreement that the

    drivers are a danger behind

the wheel and this danger is

    heightened by unroadworthy

    vehicles. Our authorities need

to take decisive action in order

    to curtail unnecessary deaths

on our roads. However, I think

that safety first begins with all

    road-users no exceptions.

    Some months ago I wrote

about drivers taking a left turn

from De Bron into Eversdal by

    disregarding a straight arrow

because of a back-up of cars on

    the off-ramp. Surely those

    drivers committing this act

know that it is wrong and that

    they could cause an unnecessa-

    only about YOU getting through

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Taxi tensions

    comes as no

    surprise

Imagine this. You are driving along

Blaauwberg Road when you hear a loud

bang. Your car is damaged, you are late

for work and the taxi driver who collided

into your vehicle has no licence, no

    permit and no insurance.

A scenario, which would have any

motorist seething. And while the taxi

driver gets a R500 fine, you have to deal

    with insurance claims, vehicle repairs

    and the associated trauma.

The area around Blaauwberg Road has

    become synonymous with near misses,

illegal ranks and taxi drivers who drive

in oncoming lanes to avoid congestion.

All of the above results in one thing:

    frustration.

Recently a local business owner took

matters in his own hands and started

boxing-in taxis ranking on his property.

His actions were lauded by the communi-

ty and after months of frustration, his

    actions come as no surprise.

Amid the furore are underlying com-

    plex municipal issues including taxi

    recapitalisation, the institution of the

MyCiTi bus service and illegal operators.

And while it will take time to sort

these out, the current situation in the

greater Table View area is reaching fever

pitch. The simple solution is enforcement,

but when resources are scarce and

excuses plentiful, anger will continue to

    mount.

A strategic and methodical approach is

needed but truth be told, people will only

continue to break the law as long as they

    are allowed to do so.

    T

he City of Cape Towns social

    development and early child-

    hood development directorate

    took its Give Responsibly campaign

    to the streets last Friday.

    Councillors and officials from the

directorate were stationed at 17 in-

    tersections in Durbanville, Bell-

    ville, Goodwood, Kuils River, Par-

    ow, Athlone, Mitchells Plain, Ot-

    tery, Diep River, Grassy Park,

    Somerset West, Strand, Gordons

    Bay, Wynberg, Lansdowne, Table

View and the Cape Town CBD,

    armedwith posters highlighting the

    importance of not giving hand-outs

    to street people.

Some of the slogans used to drive

    the message home included: Hand-

outs are not generous, they are

    harmful; By giving handouts, you

    are perpetuating a cycle of poverty;

Your money is supporting a drug

    dealer; Change is aboutmore than

a few coins; and Begging handi-

    caps my future.

We opted for this activation to

create awareness about the fact that

    street corner hand-outs are doing

    little else other than perpetuating

the cycle of dependence and keeping

people on the streets, said Suzette

Little, the Citys mayco member for

    social development and early child-

    hood development.

The public has a shared respon-

sibility for the well-being of street

    people. We must understand that

the R2 or R5 handed over at the in-

tersection is probably feeding a hab-

    it instead of the individual.

So lets change tack and move

    away from the instant gratification

    that a monetary donation provides.

My appeal to the public is to find out

where a local shelter or organisa-

tion working with street people is,

and liaise with them about how to

    makea real difference,whether it be

donating clothes or other goods, or

    even volunteering, Little said.

The City introduced its Give Re-

    sponsibly campaign in 2010, aimed

at encouraging the public to support

    the homeless by making donations

    to registered organisations instead

of individuals, thus breaking the cy-

cle that keeps them on the street.

In addition, the City has formulat-

ed a new policy and implemented a

number of interventions as part of

    its programme. The budget has

grown from R4,5 million in 2013/14,

to R7,8 million in 2014/15, to

R9,7 million in 2015/16 an increase

    of more than 100%.

The City has made great strides

    to tackle homelessness. Our field

    workers engage with street people

on a daily basis, offering them ac-

cess to a range of services including

    returning home where possible.

On the other hand, we have

    structures set up within communi-

ties to prevent others from migrat-

ing to the streets. However, many

street people refuse our offers of as-

    sistance and Im not surprised.Why

    leave the streets when do-gooders

dish out donations for very little in

return? If we are ever going tomake

a real dent in reducing the number

of people living on our streets and

offer them a better life, we need to

move away from the culture of in-

discriminate giving. Give a hand up

rather than a hand-out, Little said.

    VTheCity encourages thepublic to contact

0800872 201 formore information on how

    they can give responsibly.

    Help shelters, not beggars

Councillors Phindile Maxiti (background), chairperson of the Citys homeless

agency committee, and Philisa Marman participated in a Give Responsibly

awareness drive in Cape Town last Friday.

    A fund-raiser to help a special girl

from Brackenfell is being held on 11

October at Just Horses in Joostenberg

    Vlakte.

    Communitymembers are invited to

come together in a 5km fun walk to

help raise funds for Kayla Vorster.

Kayla lives her life today like there

is no tomorrow. The beautiful 10-year-

old was born with spina bifida, result-

ing in her spine not developing prop-

    erly.

    Her mom Jackie Vorster explains:

You get different forms of spina bi-

fida, and Kayla has the most severe

form. No two children with spina bifi-

da are the same; everyone is affected

    differently. Kayla is paralysed from

the waist down, andwill never be able

to walk. She received her first wheel-

chair at the age of three.

Kayla has already had a number of

    operations the firstwhen shewas on-

ly three days old. In total, she has had

    six operations.

When she was about two years old,

we noticed her spine was not growing

straight. We took her to a specialist

who informed us that if we didnt do

something about her spine, she would

not live to see her fifth birthday. Spe-

cialists said she had the worst scolio-

sis they had ever seen on such a small

child. They recommended she wear a

back brace, which she wore for about

three years. It slowed down the scolio-

sis, but didnt correct her spine, she

    says.

The next step was a spinal fusion by

which steel rods were inserted on ei-

ther side of her spine, then bolting the

    rods onto her spine.

Because she is a growing girl, her

rods had to be lengthened twice al-

    ready.

Despite all of this Kayla always

    smiles.

After the tough start to life she has

had, and all the ups and downs we

have been through as a family since

birth, Kayla is such a friendly, outspo-

ken girl and loves to read and do puz-

zles. She is an absolute whizz on a

computer and is so in love with ball-

room dancing, which she does at

    school.

Spina bifida is a part of her life, but

it doesnt define her at all. We do have

good days, but there are also bad days

with many challenges. As a family we

push through and help her asmuch as

we possibly can. She truly is a bless-

    ing.

Kayla has to go for annual check-

ups by various specialists, of which

the medical aid only covers a portion

of the costs. The family is then left

    with astronomical bills to pay.

Kayla needs to go for her next

check-up in November, and for the

first time I dont know how we are go-

    ing to make it.

The fund-raising event on 11 Octo-

ber starts at 12:45 and entry fee is R50

    per person.

Each entrant will receive a water

bottle and a gift and cool drinks will

be supplied to everyone taking part in

    the walk.

There will be lucky draws and spe-

    cial awards.
