Advertisingisapowerfulandpersuasivemedium.Weareallexposedtomanydifferentformsofadvertisingonadailybasis.Whetherthisisonbillboardsonthewaytowork,popupaddsontheInternet,orfriendsorcolleaguessportingthenext‘musthave’.Ithasbeenarguedthatthisisanintrusioninourdailylife,andthepressureonustospendmoneytokeepupwitheveryoneelseisstressful.Others,however,enjoythevariety,whichthishighlycreativeindustrybringstoeverydaylifeandourownindividualism.Thisessaywilldiscussthepositivesandnegativesandarguethatthecurrentprocessofadvertisingishighlynegativeasitcreatesamaterialisticsociety.

Manyofthemainargumentsforadvertisingisthatitgenerateswealthforacountryandthereforethisimprovestheeconomy.Thiscanbedividedintothreeareas;Firstly:Taxes.Thesearepaidongoodssold,helpgovernmentstopayforessentialservicessuchaseducationandhealthcare.Moreover,thenumberofjobscreatedforproducing,marketingandservicingthesegoodshelpstoreducetheunemploymentproblem,whichisthesecondareaofimportance.Thethirdpointisthatadvertisingraisesmoneyforahugenumberofsportingeventsandartisticperformances,whichwouldotherwisenotbeheld.Withoutsponsorshipfromcompanieswhoadvertisetheirproducts,theseeventswoulddisappearduetolackoffunding.Inotherwords,althoughconsumerismispromotedthroughadvertising,itisbeneficialtoboththeconsumerandsociety.

Ontheotherhand,themainargumentsagainstadvertisementscanalsobedividedintothreemainareas.Firstly,advertisingcancausepeopletobedissatisfiedwithwhattheyalreadyhave,andmakethemwantmore.Beingexposedagainandagaintoproductswhichonecannotaffordproducesfrustrationanddissatisfaction.Furthermore,thesecondareaiscost.Notallparentsareinapositiontoaffordthegoodswhichtheirchildrenseeadvertisedandwanttopossess.Thisoftenleadstofeelingsofinadequacy,especiallyamongthelesswell-off.Inadditiontothis,andthefinalissueisthatadvertisingcreatesmaterialismandcausespeopletoplacetoomuchimportanceonmaterialgoods.Thefactthatpeoplearepreparedtoworklonghours,oreventurntocrimeinordertogainthegoodsonoffer,showsthatadvertisingpersuadespeopletogotogreatlengthstokeepthesamestandardoflivingasthosetheyseearoundthem.Thus,itcouldbearguedthatneithercrimenorthestresscausedbyoverworkingcanbenefitsociety.
