The Digital Object

The digital object is the basic unit of management and preservation, encapsulating all essential information about the “document” to be disseminated and preserved

The digital object should be independent of the technical environment where possible

Use standards and non-proprietary formats to minimize dependencies

RUcore and PREMIS Implementation(Objects, Events, and Agents)

Structure (e.g. for a book intellectual entity)• Book digital object ~= PREMIS object -

representation• Presentation (pdf, djvu) ~= object - files• Archival master (ARCH1) ~= tar file encapsulating

tiff files

RUcore Metadata• PREMIS object metadata is located in both

descriptive (MODS) and technical metadata• PREMIS event metadata is in digital provenance

RUcore – Next Steps

Metadata• Environment – hardware, software and history• Agents – use PREMIS model, render as Fedora object• Compatibility with other standards (e.g. DDI or FGDC)

Architecture• Event management and integration with Fedora• Vocabulary for event type and outcome
