Your LinkedIn profile is the same as your digital resume. In order to drive interest from leading companies, it is important to create an engaging profile. The LinkedIn profile is an opportunity to display information that is not included in your resume; offering a more holistic view of who you are.

Write a compelling headline that draws people to you. The headline is the area directly right of the profile photo that describes who you are / what you do. A compelling headline can be your branding statement. Example: “We do Paint | Bringing life through color one customer at a time” LinkedIn allows only 120 characters so try be concise, but impactful.

Include a photo. LinkedIn is a professional networking site so your photo should appear professional and display you in the best light. The photo should include only you, not the family, dog or friends.

Write a captivating summary: The Summary should be written in 1st person with a conversational tone. While most just copy the summary from their resume, create a summary that summarizes your qualifications and experience in a creative way. The summary is limited to 2000 characters.

Create differentiation through Media. Add media: videos, presentations, podcasts, pictures and published works that are professional and illustrates original projects you have done.

Personalize your URL. (your LinkedIn profile)

LinkedIn automatically assigns a LinkedIn profile that includes a series of numbers following your profile name. Users have the option to customize their LinkedIn URL to make it easier for others to access it.

Obtain Endorsements and Recommendations.Select skills from which you have experience and are relevant to your targeted industry and that others can verify. Select that you want your endorsements viewed on your profile. Recommendations are the same as references and offer a level of authenticity to your profile. Solicit recommendations from your network.

Use position/industry keywords throughout your profilePosition/industry keywords can be found in job descriptions and vacancy announcements or job postings. The more you have the more you profile may be matched to opportunities.

List your Work Experience. Share the story of why you were hired, list responsibilities and noteworthy accomplishments, special projects worked and areas of expertise.

Participate in Discussion Groups. Discussion groups are a great way to network and build your reputation as a subject matter expert in your industry. It is important to always maintain professionalism and display a positive attitude while participating in discussion groups.

Post regular updates and write an Pulse article. Post updates with topics of interest related to your industry. Writing a Pulse article is another opportunity to build your reputation as a subject matter expert while providing information that may help others.

Expand your Network. The larger your network, the more opportunities to get visibility from recruiters and hiring companies. Seek to connect with friends, co-workers, alumni, professional associations/affiliations and other professional contacts.
