A complete series of 17 engraved prints of the life of the Virgin Mary, printed in Italy ca. 1685/90 from the original

copper plates engraved ca. 1506 by Marcantonio Raimondi (ca. 1480-ca. 1527/34) after the 17 woodcuts that had so far been completed of what was to be a series of 20 by Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528). Together with Lucas van Leyden, Dürer and Raimondi were the great pioneers of 16th-century graphic art, and Raimondi in particu-lar established the copperplate print as the medium of choice for reproducing works of art from other media. The series is important both as a high point in the history of art and engraving and for its religious content, but also for the views it gives of life ca. 1500.The coat of arms on the slipcase matches Rietstap's arms for the Milan family Cavazzi, Counts of Somaglia. In very good condition and with large margins. Binding somewhat worn and with a few cracks and minor stains.

With 8 numbered engraved plates, namely a frontispiece view of a skating rink with many skaters, engraved by Ambroise Tardieu, and 7 images of individual skaters, each in a different pose. First edition of the first French ice-skating manual, describ-ing many movements and poses with an emphasis on grace and form, illustrated with 8 engraved plates. Unlike English skaters, who advocated a more straightforward

approach, Garcin compared skating with dancing, stressing grace and artistry rather than technique and precision. It is dedicated to Mademoiselle Gosselin, principal dancer at the Académie Imperial de Musique. One of the earliest separate works in any language devoted entirely to ice-skating.The printer, described only as Gillé fils, is better known as the typefounder and punchcutter Joseph-Gaspard Gillé, and the book therefore serves as a display of types that almost certainly come from his foundry. His father, also Joseph, was the leading French type-founder and punchcutter between Fournier and Didot, and Joseph-Gaspard produced some of the best types following the Didot style. He added a small printing office to the foundry ca. 1793. Among its few productions are several printed for Napoleon's Imperial govern-ment. Although awarded medals and honours in 1801 and 1808, Gillé went bankrupt in the year the present book appeared. He attempted to revive his firm in 1816 but remained in difficulties and seems to have no imprints after 1818. From 1827, the year after Gillé's death, the foundry was continued by the writer Honoré de Balzac and his associates. Balzac's Illusions perdues, written in 1837 and set in 1821/22, refers to the "ronde" script types of Gillé, former printer to the Emperor, and contrasts his excellent and up-to-date types with the outdated work of a provincial typefounder.In very good condition, with only very minor foxing and one or two pages very slightly dirty. Wholly untrimmed copy, preserving the deckles and point holes.

Most complete copy of 1618 edition seen

The most complete copy we have seen of the 1618 edition of a rare book of noteworthy sights, views, and scenes from daily life and from trade and industry in the Netherlands (primarily Holland). It was intended in part for students to use as an album

amicorum: the owner(s) and friends could draw their coats of arms in the empty shields of the armorial plates and write comments, verses, etc. on those leaves or the interleaving, but this copy has not been used in that way. The 30 pictorial plates include a knife fight before an inn, making butter, washing and bleaching cloth, salting and smoking haring, cutting peat, ship-building, making hemp rope (“cannabis” in Holland in 1618!) and linen thread, richly dressed merchant couples, Frisian peasants, Dutch peasants, musicians, ice skating, wind-powered and horse-drawn ice sledges, wind-powered carts on the beach (Simon Steven’s ca. 1600 land speed record remained unbroken until ca. 1840), ships, notable sites in Leiden and Amsterdam, the Roman ruins of Brittenburg on Katwijk beach (which were occasionally exposed when the sea was unusually low in the 16th century) and many more.

One copy of this edition at Amsterdam University has exactly the same plates as the present, while another copy there, and copies at Leiden University and the Pierpont Morgan Library, have fewer. The heraldic plates vary even more from copy to copy and were probably assembled according to the wishes (and pocketbook) of the buyer. Ours has 8, the Van Stolk copy of the undated edition has 4 and the most complete Leiden copy of the 1616 edition has 7, but each has heraldic plates not in the others.

Manuscript in black ink on paper, with occasional headings or short passages of text in reddish-brown ink, ink drawings with coloured gouaches of birds, flowers, fruits, snails, insects, leaves, fish, etc. on most pages, some related to passages in the text and others largely decorative, all in a charming folk-art style. There are also a few uncoloured drawings moare explicitly illustrating the text. The text and headings are neatly written in a Dutch gothic script. Contemporary limp vellum, sewn on 3 vellum supports, laced through the cover. € 15.000

A rare and interesting example of an early 17th-century Dutch recipe book, covering not only recipes for cooking and otherwise preparing foods, but also with 3 pages

(leaves 58–59) devoted to mixing and darkening artists' paints (about 25 recipes, some explicitly recommended for painting plants, fruits, skin tones and other subjects) and 32 pages of medicinal recipes. This was the dawn of the Dutch golden age, nine years after the establishment of the Dutch East India Company (voc), so herbs and spices, both culinary and medicinal, and exotic pigments were beginning to reach the Netherlands from its rapidly expanding international trade. The manuscript therefore offers a fas-cinating window into this changing world and the materials it provided,

when Rembrandt would have been five years old. The charming coloured drawings scattered through the entire manuscript, simple folk art, enliven the text and may have made use of some of the recipes for mixing pigments.The heading for the first two of the three pages devoted to paint reads, "Om coleuren te temberen om met te schilderen" (To temper [here meaning mix] colours for painting) and that for the third page reads, "Om coleuren te diepen" (To darken colours). The ingredi-ents mentioned include white lead, red lead, vermilion, verdigris, lake, saffron, umber, azure, indigo, turnsole, potash, "orliana" and others.The manuscript opens with recipes for sweet pastry: "Spaens beschuyt", "beschuyt de Naples", "beschuyt de Milan", "Macrones", etc., followed by many recipes for conserving and preserving fruits, vegetables, nuts, herbs, etc., making them into jellies or jams, or candying them in order to preserve them until Christmas or longer. It also contains many recipes for pastries and pies, some with names unknown to us, and recipes to preserve fish (herring, sprat, lobster, crab). The folding sheet gives long lists of foods that can be preserved in the form of biscuit, pies, candies, jams, etc.The manuscript ends (leaves 61–76) with medicinal recipes to treat constipation, jaundice, stomach-, tooth-, eye- and headache, deafness, inflammation, stings and bites of snakes and other animals, a general recipe to treat plague, and recipes for plasters, elixers and balms, partly made from fruits, etc.The author, Abraham de Bous (or Bouse? a letter may have been lost after the s), is wholly unknown, but the contemporary owner's inscription (see below) suggests the manuscript might have a Sephardic Jewish origin.With 9-line contemporary owner's inscription on the recto of the first (unnumbered) leaf, beginning: "desen bouck behoort toe aen de weduwe d'heer vander planche commende van maseir olleviera ...' (this book belongs to the widow of Mr. Vander Planche coming from Maser Oliveira?). Further with the ca. 1890 bookplate of Jean Baptista Vervliet, Antwerp biblio-

phile, author, and editor of La presse universelle. Generally in good condition, somewhat frayed and with occasional marginal chips or minor tears, the first and last few pages dirty

and slighly stained, some of the reddish-brown ink slightly faded but still easily readable. Binding

soiled and slightly curled, with a couple chips in the spine.

Comprehen-sive collection of brochures and folders on skiing mostly intended for

the Dutch market. The collection primarily contains brochures from Austria and Switzerland, but also from France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Spain and Sweden. Many of these designed by notable (poster) artists such as Herbert Matter, Hubert Mumelter (especially interesting because of the photomontage techniques used), Martin Peikert, Franz Stümvoll and Hans Thoni, and contain numerous photographs from Heinz von Almen and Oscar Darbellay and various panorama's and maps by Heinrich Caesar Berann, M. Bieder, Füssli, Wolfgang Hausamann and A. Klopfenstein. Ranging from the earliest days of winter tourism until the end of the 20th, century when winter tourism took over the lead from summer tourism in many of the Swiss ski resorts.Also included in the collection are 110 books on skiing by authors as Bruno Baanen, Henry Hoek and Hubert Mumelter and well-known Dutch literary writers as Louis Paul Boon and A. den Doolaard. The collection is fully catalogued by country and region, with an extensive introduction by Paul van den Brink, an index of the artists, and an image and description of each brochure (available on request). The brochures are divided in two parts: the first from the period 1930–1964 containing 236 brochures and the second from 1965–1990 containing 181 brochures.The incredible emergence of skiing since the thirties is attractively illustrated by the subsequent advance of ski marketing: vast quantities of promotional materials were distributed internationally to create incentives for travel. Most eye-catching were the large posters of tempting winter landscapes, that were always supplemented by related folders and brochures, handed for free to turn potential tourists into actual visitors.These flyers propagated the same advertising messages, but now complemented with inviting texts, drawings, photographs, panoramas and maps. Unlike the posters that are still preserved and collected for their artistry, most of these printed leaflets were lost, for the simple reason that they were meant for ephemeral use only and afterwards were almost always discarded.From the collection of Bastiaan Cornelis Pieter Hendrik van Baak, a passionate tourist and collector of mountaineering and skiing literature. Very rare third edition of easily the most popular Dutch conjuring book of the 17th and 18th century. It was republished many times, amusing gener-

ations of children as well as adults at home and at parties. On long winter evenings families and parties amused themselves with the help of the book, trying the various tricks and games. Landwehr ascribes the book to Willem Goeree, who first published the book at Middelburg in 1679. Goeree probably chose the pseudonym Witgeest (Whiteghost) as a guarantee that the book contained white rather than black magic.The section on drawing and colouring in Het Natuurlijk Toverboek, was taken from Goeree's Inleydinge tot de Algemeene Teyken-Konst (1668). This third edition is divided into 5 sections and explains about 500 conjuring tricks, including card tricks, mathematical tricks, making of glass, anamorphoses, camera obscura, memory tricks and many more. The last 45 pages contain recipes for perfumed soaps, cosmetics, etc. Leaves M3 & 2C2 have a small marginal loss of paper not affecting the text. Fine copy.

Keur Bible

Beautifully illustrated large folio Dutch States Bible (Statenbijbel) with 6 maps, including a world map, and a complete set of

the striking illustrations drawn and engraved by Bernard Picart and others. The maps belong to the larger of two series by Daniël Stoopendaal and were explicitly made for the Keur Bibles with, for example, Bible scenes (rather than figures from classical mythology) decorating the world map. With the armorial bookplate of Hendrik Gerardsz. van Couwenhoven (1711–1792) and a short handwritten genealogy of Couwenhoven's family, from Couwenhoven's marriage in 1738 to the birth of this last child in 1766. The binding appears to date from the middle quarters of the 18th century, so it may have been bound and presented for the occasion of the 1738 wedding. In very good condition. The binding is slightly worn at the joints, the headcap of volume 1 is damaged and there are a few other minor surface imperfections, but it remains generally in very good condition.

A Victorian adventure

A series of fine watercolours re-cording a trip to a manor house

A very nice account in a series of colourful and partly humorous pictures produced by the unidentified artist "F.W" or "E.W." in 1869 (the 8th drawing monogrammed and dated), mounted slightly later

in an album with paper watermarked "J. Whatman 1874". The series of drawings records a visit by the artist and his companion Tom Hieover to an unidentified manor, where they encounter an overturned coach and its 'spilled milliners', compete with friends in a steeplechase, take a young cousin on a coach trip through very high snow before resting at an inn called the 'Rest and be Thankful', and finally leave the inn to travel five miles home on foot. Binding restored. One album leaf at the beginning cut out. Occasionally slightly fingersoiled and some small tears in paper not affecting the watercolours. Charming album in good condition, with sparkly watercolours, mainly with scenes including horses and carriages by an unidentified but accomplished equestrian artist.

illustrating the life of Jesus Christ, all plates coloured by a contemporary hand and highlighted with gold.Adriaen Collaert (ca. 1560–1618), a scion of a well-known family of engravers and print publishers, was active in Antwerp at the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th century. He published a follow-up to the present series with similar illustrations as Passio et resurrectio D.N. Iesu Christi.With the modern bookplate of John Landwehr on pastedown. Title-page rein-forced, thumbed throughout in the lower right corner, a few other minor stains, and the leaves cut short, occasion-ally shaving the plates. With all illustrations highlighted with gold and somewhat crudely hand-coloured.

Poinsettia Indigenous to Mexico, the Poinsettia (Euphorbia Pulcherrima) was a beloved flower in the Aztec Empire. According to legend its association with Christmas began in the 16th century when a girl named Pepita, too poor to give anything else, placed some weeds on the altar on Christmas Eve. Miraculously the weeds began to sprout brilliantly red leaves, which led to the Spanish designation Flor de la Nochebuena (Flower of the Holy Night). In the 17th century Franciscan friars in Taxco de Alarcón incorporated the winter blooming plant in their Christ-mas decorations. Its modern popularity is ascribed to Joel R. Poinsett (1779–1851), the first US minister in Mexico, who vis-ited Taxco and brought the plant to the United States. By 1836 the plant had acquired the common name Poinsettia.

Magnificent colour-plate book by the Belgian artist Berthe Hoola van Nooten (1840–1885) showing Javanese fruits and

flowers, beautifully chromolithographed by P. de Pannemaeker. Shortly after having followed her husband to Java, Indonesia, Hoola van Nooten became a widow at 21, leaving her in debt and with a family to support. To make a living, she took to painting the flora of the island. Her extraordinary sketches show the exuberant colour display of tropical fruits and flowers, ideally suited to the new technique of chromolithog-raphy. "Van Nooten was clearly a more than competent artist, for the splendid tropical plants, with their lush foliage, vividly coloured flowers and exotic fruit, have been depicted with great skill" (Tomasi). Binding restored, new endpapers, some browning. A good copy of an impressive book.

Well produced and beautifully illustrated songbook for children by Rie Cramer, with old Dutch Christmas songs. The illustrations with their richly gilt borders are reminiscent of the miniatures from medieval manu-scripts. The music was composed by Alex de Jong, who composed the music for several of Rie Cramer's chil-dren's songbooks. Perfect copy with the original publisher’s envelope damaged and browned and the silk bow somewhat falling apart.
