Overture 1812
The 3d U.S. Infantry Salute Guns Platoon is responsible for rendering honors to visiting foreign dignitaries and heads of state at the White House, the Pentagon, and elsewhere in the Washington, DC, area. The platoon also fires the final salutes during many funerals at Arlington National Cemetery. The guns platoon is the only unit of its kind in the Army, and its busy schedule includes more than 300 ceremonies each year. During the performance of Overture Solennelle (1812), the battery is directed by an Army Band Officer (CPT Richard Winkels), who gives the firing commands from the musical score. Thirty-three shots are fired, including the final volley from all four cannons.
Presidential Salute Battery3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard)The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” has
been the premier musical organization of America’s Army since 1922. Army Chief of Staff General John J. “Black Jack” Pershing directed its formation to emulate the premier European military bands he had heard during the First World War. “Pershing’s Own” continues to play an important role in events of national and international significance, and has traditionally led every inaugural parade since the 1925 inauguration of Calvin Coolidge. Today, the band consists of 270 active-duty Soldiers with ten official musical ensembles: The U.S. Army Ceremonial Band, The U.S. Army Herald Trumpets, The U.S. Army Concert Band, The U.S. Army Strings, The U.S. Army Blues (big band/jazz), The U.S. Army Chorus, The U.S. Army Band Downrange (pop/rock band), The U.S. Army Voices, The U.S. Army Brass Quintet, and The U.S. Army Woodwind Quintet.
