Just a short wander into the outskirts of the city centre you’ll find cricket field, tennis courts and football pitches ready to be enjoyed and explored. Boscawen Park is also home to a large play area full of climbing frames, swings and slides, and thanks to the wonderful work of Friends of Boscawen Park these are all to be enhanced with new apparatus. a beautiful river walk running the outer periphery edges of the park tracing the conduit of the Truro river makes this

Boscawen Park—

Nestled on the banks of the Truro River, Boscawen is a must-visit for any sport enthusiasts.

the perfect destination for lazy walks outside. Here you will also find a dedicated training area, complete with a wide variety of workout equipment. A dedicated dog exercise area and colourful landscape garden make this a popular recreational area for dog walkers and flower fiends alike. If wildlife is what you’re after however, head to Trennick Mill which offers a duck pond framed with herbaceous borders and shrubs.

Victoria Gardens

only a stone’s throw away from the city centre, the gardens span a steep south-facing slope and in typical late 19th century style feature a pattern of trees and exotic shrubs interlaced with paths and flowerbeds. A beautiful ornate fountain can be found nearby, which originally stood in Boscawen Street but was relocated shortly after the gardens opened.

Amongst the picnic areas and playgrounds you’ll find a magnificent view of Truro’s viaduct. Built by Isambard kingdom Brunel in 1859, this majestic structure was replaced in 1904 but still features five piers from its original construction.

Central to Victoria Gardens is our bandstand, gifted by a former Truro City Councilor. In the summer you’ll find this peaceful plot transformed into a hub of live musical activity.

daubuz MoorDaubuz Moor is Truro’s very own nature haven, a beautiful expanse of parkland, gardens home to a marvelous mixture of wildlife.

daubuz Moor is a unique green space nestled just to the north of Truro. Gifted to the City by reverend ennis in 1977, this large 18-acre site offers a distinct insight into the city’s colourful heritage and for any horticultural enthusiasts it’s a must-see. It now acts as a nature reserve to improve habitats for all kinds of wildlife. Funds from the Green link Corridor Project in the early 2000s provided money to invest in bat boxes, bird boxes, log piles and brush piles to bolster the wide array of plants and animals that dwell here.

We offer guided tours and walks in the summer – go to www.truro.gov.uk/Parks-and-Gardens/Daubuz-moors.aspx for more information.

Last year saw a number of accolades cast Truro’s way with The Royal Horticultural Society’s national Britain in Bloom awards. First held in 1964, the annual campaign aims to find the best achievements in gardening, care for the environment and community participation.

Truro received Gold, winning overall in the national category of Large Town, making Truro the Best Large Town in the whole of Great Britain, which is no small feat, considering over 1,000 communities enter each year. 2014 was the year Truro also procured Best Community Award. The Parks manager richard Budge also won the individual award of Community Champion.

This year will see Truro compete in the Champions of Champions category in the 2015 National Britain in Bloom Competition 2015 against five others to become UK champion.

We were shown beautiful vibrant floral features, well-maintained parks and a community spirit that was infectious. Truro should be proud of their entry that is clearly benefiting all those who live, work and visit this Cornish town.’ Jon Wheatley and darren share, national Britain in Bloom Judges.

Ten Year Plan Update

Friends of Boscawen ParkThe Parks Department is now at the stage that £200k has been secured and extensive public consultation has been carried out to come up with designs to replace all the equipment in the upper level of the play park at Boscawen Park. Work commenced on 13 April 2015 and the project is expected to last for approximately 7 weeks. our thanks must be expressed to Friends of Boscawen Park volunteers for all their hard work assisting Truro City Council in this wonderful facility for the future.

Victoria Gardens Project Truro City Council are currently in the position where we have planning permission to build the new toilet block, education room and improved staff accommodation in the current location of the workshop area. We are now compiling the application for round one of National Heritage Lottery funding to carry out restoration to the bandstand, top shelter, railings and gates, pathways, plantings and the ram system that provides water to the water features throughout the gardens.

12 // Truro Parks & Gardens

Glasteinan WoodsTruro City Council is now at the stage whereby a land transfer and financial agreement have been made and it is hoped that this process will happen in the very near future. Funds received from this agreement will be invested in a long term investment and the interest will pay for future maintenance and ongoing costs. There is also a further sum of money which is planned to be used for improvement works on Tinney Green and tarmacking of paths throughout the wooded areas, working with a Friends Group to improve the area for wildlife and users.

Nursery LocationTruro City Council is in a position to submit a full planning application following a pre-planning application for the relocation of the nursery to an out-of-town site. This will free up the existing site creating an opportunity to turn the area into a multi-sports hub with fitness suite, sports hall, improved changing facilities and café etc.

Friends of

Furniss islandDescribed as the hidden gem that once housed a Furniss biscuit Factory, this blossoming garden is Truro’s ultimate community green space.

Wander into the centre of Truro to take a gander at Truro’s own green space Furniss Island. Local Friends Group, Truro City Council, Truro school and Green Walks Truro have helped transform the patch of previously unloved land into a handsome garden.

The project aims to empower local residents by giving them space to evolve ideas that will sustain the garden. If you haven’t taken the time out to discover the delights of Furniss Island, make sure you add it to your summer to-do list. not only are there lots of community events held here throughout the year to keep you busy but it’s also perfect for a quiet picnic lunch or an afternoon read.

14 // Truro Parks & Gardens

Boscawen ParkSet up only two years ago, the Friends of Boscawen Park community group has raised over £200,000 to help improve play and recreational facilities at the park.

Work is now well underway to transform the play area with brand new fixed equipment and areas of natural play.

Through a series of public consultations, the group settled on a shipwreck theme for the park, complete with a mast and crow’s nest.

The new facilities are designed to cater for children of all ages. This includes a toddler area with a little house, tunnel and a sand table. There will also be

a separate sensory zone featuring musical instruments and older children will enjoy the challenge of high nets, climbing frames and a zip wire. new footpaths, landscaping and seating areas have also been planned.

The new look park is due to reopen early Summer.

Above is an artist’s impression of the new recreational facilities at Bocawen Park, Truro.
