TROWBRIDGE | The Beach Collection

White sands, shimmering waters, palm trees, the warmth of the sun’s rays, refreshing cocktails, alfresco dining and outdoor activities.

If you close your eyes and imagine the glorious summer season, these are some of the images that spring to mind, writes Charlee Harris.

We have taken this ideal view of summer and created a collection of Beach Scenes that transform your imagined thoughts into tangible, framed artwork.

These photographs have been taken on some of the world’s most stunning beaches during moments where the natural light exposes the shoreline in all its beauty.

Tropical seascapes blend sky and water together with effortless beauty. Like a window to a desired destination the images capture the imagination and bring warmth and light, leaving you longing to be transported to the very spot.

It is easy to see why so many artists have found their inspiration from warmer climates where the vibrancy of the colours makes an impressive visual impact.

Each beach scene has been chosen for its clean lines, sharp colour and incomparable simplicity.

As with all of our collections, they are giclee fine art prints using the finest watercolour paper and colourfast inks. Each piece comes in one of three bespoke handmade frames, each featuring a linen covered slip which adds to the grandeur of the piece.

Henri Matisse 1954 Vintage Prints CollectionThese prints are from the 1954 edition. They are not later reproductions and should not be confused with modern posters.

Henri Matisse became one of the world's most famous painters of the 20th century completely by accident. Whilstconvalescing from appendicitis his mother gave him his first set of paints to while away his time.

'From the moment I held the box of colours in my hands, I knew this was my life. I threw myself into it like a beast that plunges towards the thing it loves,' he said.

In his final years Matisse became wheelchair bound and in 1941, with the aid of assistants, he set about creating highly original work using brightly coloured cut-out paper shapes arranged in abstract patterns. These cut paper collages, often on a large scale, were called gouaches découpés.

His Blue Nudes series features prime examples of this technique he called 'painting with scissors'; they demonstrate the ability to bring his eye for colour and geometry to a new medium of utter simplicity, but with playful and delightful power.

'Instead of drawing an outline and filling in the colour I am drawing directly in colour,' he said.

The first lithographic plates of this work were executed under Matisse's own direction in 1954.The succeeding work was completed under the meticulous supervision of his friend and publisher, Teriade.

The lithographic plates, in fifteen to twenty impressions of colour, were printed by Mourlot Frères, of Paris, and the monochrome heliogravure plates were printed by the master printer Draeger Freres.

Our 1954 Vintage Prints are Signed in Plate and a Certificate of Authenticity accompanies each one.

These images are prints published in 1954. They should be not confused with modern posters.

Poppy works mostly with oils, acrylics and a smudge of charcoal, though she always feels most comfortable with her trusty graphite pencil, saysCharlee Harris.

London-based artist Poppy, creates graceful and stylish fashion illustrations.

In her pieces she aims to create a timeless elegance in the woman that she portrays, which she does so beautifully in her exquisite Ballerina collection and her other Fashion led drawings.

The inspiration for her work comes from 40's, 50's fashion and portraiture photography.

She says of her works: "I am drawn to the spontaneity of a moment, whether it be a reflective, thoughtful moment or a sudden graceful movement."

From a young age Poppy drew the people she observed and doodled fashion sketches from them.

Her love for drawing compelled her to complete a founda-tion art and design course at Central Saint Martins followed by an Illustration degree at London College of Fashion.

Poppy’s work is now expanding with her recent colour experiments.

Since she graduated in 2004 Lucy Claw has been putting her degree in Textile and Surface Design to great use as a freelance designer producing fashion and interior works which have been sold worldwide.

Lucy is inspired by the urban world and her contemporary textiles begin life as sketches of her environment.

She has developed her own unique styleof embellishment which sees her applying glossy textures, beautiful appliqué and hand-embroidered stitching to her wool and cashmere designs.

In her exclusive collections for TROWBRIDGE, Lucy draws upon the natural, classic shape of foliage in an aesthetically contemporary fashion.

Her delicately appliquéd textiles, using a range of qualitymaterials in calming shades are the next generation in fabric design. The finely crafted simplicity of her forms have a timeless appeal, with foliage that looks good in any season.

Through her willingness to experiment and a personal flair, Lucy’s effective combination of well-placed cuttings create a three dimensional aspect to each hand made piece with added bold style.

TROWBRIDGE | James Wheeler

Painting in oil on cork allows James Wheeler to achieve subtle textures and although contemporary, his pieces have a timeless quality allowing for viewer interpretation evoked by his use of light and atmosphere of the landscape.

He wants people to view his work and have it stir an emotion or memory.

James Wheeler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1944.He attended the Glasgow School of Art and became one of the UK’s leading carpet designers.

His inspiration is drawn from visits to his homeland, Scotland, and from holidays spent in France, Venice and the Mediterranean islands.

Closer to home his love of the Lake District and magnificent Yorkshire moors also inspires him.

James is a member of the Fine Arts Trade Guild, has had many successful exhibitions in England and has been regional winner of the Laing Art Exhibition, exhibited at the Leeds Open Art Exhibition and the Leicestershire Art for Schools and Colleges Exhibition.

This collection of James Wheeler Landscapes are fine art Giclee prints using archival quality inks on William Turner310gsm Hahnemule watercolour paper.

Each image is numbered out of 195 and signed by the artist.

Gaining an MA in Printmaking from the Royal College of Art in 1998 and winning several awards for her work, she has now been a printmaker for over ten years.

Using the screen printing process, the artist achieves smooth,flat and crisp images, exploring shape and form through the layering of colours, textures and painterly marks.

Her works is based around repetition, forming patterns, and using lines, stripes and hand drawn textures to add interest. Below is anextract from an Interview with E. Lawrenson from last year which illustrates beautifully the importance of observation in her life for the pieces she creates.

“I am a printmaker, using only the screen printing process at the moment. I make abstract printsinspired by anything and everything around me. I notice unusual shapes, patterns and colours then try to make some sort of order out of them back in my studio. I can take shapes and images from almost anywhere and am constantly scanning as I go about my day. Deciding what is worthy of noting, or drawing is sometimes a struggle. If I’m lacking stimulus or feel overwhelmed by all the stuff in my sketchbooks I’ll go out for a walk with my dog in the hills or by the river and absorb colours, textures and clear my head.

I have two main styles of working; one is the more hard edged geometric or linear style and the other, the more fluid abstract shapes and organic work.

I tend to focus back to nature and the rural landscape when I find myself going off on tangents. It makes me channel into an area I find calming and makes me work at a slower pace. I find the organic prints are the most beautiful. They have softer lines and curves.These also tend to be the prints with the least colours, so never seem to go wrong.”
