  • Chantel Atkins (CEO/Owner)

I started The Rhythmic Lounge in December 2010. At its start, it was a fairly simple website with the purpose of giving people a place to promote their talents and network. I had no idea that less than two years later it would transform into something much bigger. The website then underwent a complete revamp in July 2011, with a brand new look and the addition of many new features, including the creation of The Rhythmic Lounge Radio. Following suit, the radio started out as merely a 24/7 stream of hand-picked music submitted by talented musicians from the website but is now an integral part of the company. Listeners from all over the world tune in regularly to hear the wide variety of music, as well as the

educational, musical and talk-radio shows that we now host.

The radios success has only made me realize The Rhythmic Lounge could take me in new directions everyday rather than the other way around, which is why a digital magazine seemed like the next step. Im incredibly proud to present to you hardworking artists and entertainers in this magazine and on the site, so enjoy!

Be sure to go to www.therhythmiclounge.com to see the profiles for the great talent displayed in this issue and take a look at our new magazine site at http://www.trlmagazine.com

Thanks for the support, and happy reading!

  • Marion'Forget'Ontario, Canada ' My dad who was a draftsman, had an unique and inspiring way to channel the energies of a hyper little girl, he would hand me a huge piece of drawing paper and some pencils so i could draw while he worked on his current project. Since, i cannot remember a time without a pad or lose paper and pencil as my constant companion. Though i did not have any formal art instruction until high school. I was exposed to arts with books and material and crafts, with my mom who designed and made craft ideas from mini Santa's to fancy embroideries. The art and creativity was a big part of my childhood.

After starting another art course, the demands and rewards of motherhood saw to it that it was put on the back burner but always simmering. When i wasn't doing art, i was always doing some kind of creative activity from model building to crochet, designing my own

patterns. in time, when circumstance allowed, i went back to school. One diploma at Academy of Learning for Pc Support Specialist, then the second at Niagara College For Graphic Fundamentals And Fine Arts. My influences range from Neolithic to 19th century impressionist art on up to present day. You will see i have taken to the impressionist period and can see the influences in many pieces of my work. Little incidents in just living an ordinary life spark a creative drive to a new painting or piece that emerges from that speck of inspiration. The past 4-5 years has been both a blossoming of output on a mooded commercial success. The critical acclaim spurs my creative drive to continuously push back the boundaries of my art. I cannot know where my art will take me but i do aspire to exhibit in places like Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver as well as stepping out of Canada to enter the international art world with a first stop to New York City. My ultimate goal is to become an internationally known artist. Marion was also recently chosen to be included in the Norman Felix Gallery Norman Felix Gallery is an independent art gallery located at 445 Adelaide Street. Founded in 2006, Norman Felix Gallery has steadily expanded to represent a variety of over 100 talented Canadian artists. We offer an array of contemporary paintings, photographs, illustrations, and sculptures by both emerging and established independent artists. Our collective showcasing program is ground breaking and focused on Canadian Artist.

Matt Lande, an alternative recording artist from Portland, has launched a

crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo to raise funds to complete his new

album, Glow". The album contains the song Looking Down, which honors

two friends of Landes who passed away from cancer, late last year. The song

was written to help raise funds for cancer research and to help families of

cancer patients. The proceeds of the Indigogo campaign will be used for mixing,

  • Tracy Hamlin (Baltimore, Maryland / Virginia) By Ross Guity Throughout history, planet Earth has been sonically blessed with some of the most incredibly gifted female signing voices the likes of Etta James, Whitney Houston, Teena Marie, Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Ledisi, and the list can go on forever and many a days. Entering into the year of 2016, immensely talented veteran singer/songwriter Tracy Hamlin will be a powerful force to be reckoned with in her own, uniquely special right and earn the globe-wide respect from fans of 'real' music vibrations. Her 2015 independently-released 16-track long-play 'No Limits' was well-received internationally - most notably in the United Kingdom where it successfully reached No. 1 on the Soul music charts. 'It's been a blessing beyond words, and it's great to know that people are still genuinely going after the quality of the music.' said Hamlin during our recent phone chat. Here's a bit more of my awesome conversation with Tracy. The Rhythmic Lounge: How would you describe the musicality of Tracy Hamlin? Tracy Hamlin: It consists of a voice that is classically trained that has kept her ears to all music genres combined with my life experiences - both the good and the bad. My vibes are an infusion of old-school with the new-new. You'll get a 'gumbo' of music - different genres along with hearing all of the characteristics of my voice. I am a singer that can truly deliver whatever the song calls for based on the raw emotions I project vocally on every track I record. TRL: What do the initials 'DMH' stand for in the name of your independent record label DMH Records? TH: They are the initials to the name of my late, beloved, beautiful mother Dorothy Marie Hamlin. TRL: When fans come to see you perform live for the very first time, what can they expect when you take the stage? TH: The fans will get a seasoned and very disciplined singer - therefore my vocals are on point from start to finish when I perform live. I love to entertain the fans and put on a quality show that they deserve to be a witness of. I stay in practice all the time to continue evolving with my craft.

  • TRL: What's the best advice you can give to a musically-talented young lady who aspires to go 'next level' with it? TH: It is imperative to learn the business and understand that the music industry is a business. It is also important that you constantly work in order to perfect your craft. Being a woman in this industry, it is crucial that you stand your ground with integrity. Stay true to yourself and teach people how to treat you! TRL: The art of RHYTHM is - TH: The movements of the peaks and valleys - big or small, and the different frequencies of it that contributes to the rhythm of life. I think a huge chunk of it is defined by our character and who we eventually become. www.TracyHamlin.com where creativity lives HOLIDAY / / 17

S/O to Coast 2 Coast Mixtapes and Coast 2 Coast Mixtape DJs. For putting SRM on the next up mixtape.

"I'm not the average female rapper, and first and foremost I'm a rapper. I can only rap about my reality and what I see going on around me. She continues to express.

Shes goal is not only to entertain the streets but to educate the streets as well.

Early 2014 She Rex Mykes has released Crowned Royal Vol 1 and then Crowned Royal 2 on December 31 2014. She Rex is currently working on her next installment of the Crowned Royal Series, which will be Crowned Royal 3. "That whole series is like a diary or a journal. The whole idea behind it was not to say that she is better than anyone else, but the whole message is that life happens, but staying true to yourself, know yourself, and recognize the royalty within in you" she states. She is also currently working on her debut album to be released on Not Only Street Records, called Lessons From The 9.

The next few moves I'm about to make for myself as an artist and for Dope Souf is gonna be a serious uppercut to the game. That's all I'm gonna say. #iaintbraggin just #facts #building2brands #Dec31st #about2raisethestandard

Ron Handy: Coming from a musical household where everyone in the house played an instrument and/or sang definitely had an impact on me, but my aha moment came when I was in high school. I had a wonderful band director, Farrell Duncombe, who saw some potential in me and allowed me to go as far as I wanted to go under his guidance. I was the saxophone section leader and, as a teenager, was allowed to arrange musical selections and conduct them in rehearsals. The fire within me was raging once I stood in front of the band for the first time to conduct my very first marching band arrangement (laughs). Honestly, it didnt turn out that great but Mr. Duncombe encouraged me to keep at it. I was so determined to practice that Mr. Duncombe asked the school principal if I could have a key to the band room. I think he was tired of me bugging him (laughs). His request was granted and I was able to practice in the band room at any time. I loved it and my desire to be a good musician (along with being a responsible young man) was of high priority.

TRL: You play several instruments! How did that come about?

RH: Wow! Thats a good question! As I stated earlier, my family had instruments around the house all the time and it sparked my interest to see how each one operated. Several years ago I worked with John Gibbs, a fantastic musician who owns a music store here in Montgomery. Whenever I was in the store I would watch customers come in to purchase different instruments. To my surprise and amazement, John would demonstrate each instrument that was requested. I dont mean tinker with it (smile). He could really play every instrument that he put his hands onWELL (laughs). It was great for me to see a person do that and he was gracious enough to show me some techniques on different instruments. I was getting into multi-track recording at the time and I had to lay all of the tracks myself. Whew! During those days I didnt have digital recorders to work with, so everything went to tape. It really helped my musicianship because I had to literally perform every part in its entirety. I continue to work like that now because I get a better feel for the music by actually playing the parts separately.

TRL: Why was going to college and getting a degree in music important to you?

RH: First of all, both of my parents are retired educators and going to college was always stressed to me, along with my siblings, as a way to position ourselves for a better life. I was so into music in high school that my mind was made up about having music as a major. I really wanted to learn everything that I could about music and possibly teach one day. My saxophone instructor in college, Dr. Laurence Hayes, played a major role in convincing me to soak up all of the knowledge that I could from him. Believe me, he had a wealth of knowledge and I was encouraged to go beyond my musical barriers. The music was so difficult that I would spend 4 to 6 hours a day working on various exercises. I once asked, Why are you giving me such difficult pieces to learn? I soon found out that he was planning to retire and I am now in his old office at Alabama State University. Talk about irony (smile). Attending college and getting a degree in music has been extremely beneficial to me. I owe a major debt of gratitude to all of my former teachers for the seeds that theyve sown in me. May God bless them all!

TRL: You've performed numerous times as a solo act. How challenging is that?

RH: Thats a great question! The solo act came about as the result of my maturing as a multi-instrumentalist and producer. I owe a lot of my decision to perform solo to Dr. George Shaw, a Long Beach, California based musician/producer/educator whom I met several years ago. He literally took me under his wing and instructed me on the ins and outs of studio recording. Hes a guru when it comes to studio gear and hes an awesome trumpet player. Well, I had a performance coming up for a festival and was working so hard that I didnt have time to pull a band together for rehearsals. I was about to cancel the engagement when Dr. Shaw says, Do it yourself! His statement changed everything for me and I began to perform with or without a band. I spent a great deal of time learning several tunes on a variety of instruments to enhance my live performances. Performing live with a band is wonderful and I enjoy that aspect tremendously. The challenge of performing live on a track date concert is that it requires a lot more energy. Since Im performing the instrumental parts on the tracks, I always think about my energy level and which instrument(s) I will be playing live to keep things fresh and interesting. Its truly a challenge, but I enjoy it!

TRL: Do you remember the first time you heard yourself on the radio?

RH: Yes I do remember the first time I heard a selection that Id recorded in the studio on the radio (laughs). Back in the day, I was always working on stuff (smile). A good friend of mine and music business mentor, Steve Myers, would always ask me Are you working on some material? I would always say yes and he would tell me to get it to him as soon as I was done. After several months of asking the same question and getting the same answer from me, I reluctantly gave Steve a tape to check out over the weekend. I didnt think it was ready, but he took it and returned it to me on the following Monday. He told me he liked it and I said thanks, but Ill finish it soon. To my surprise, I was driving and listening to our campus radio station (WVAS FM 90.7) when I heard one of my selections on the radio. You see, Steve Myers was the station manager at the time and hed copied the tape and put it on the air. I guess he was tired of waiting on me and decided I was ready (Laughs). As I think about it, Im glad he did that. I would probably still be getting ready today (smile)! Thanks, Steve!

TRL: How did the interesting concept of the "Killing Me Softly" video on YouTube come about?

RH: The Killing Me Softly track and video came about very quickly. The vocalist that I work with, Christina Mims, has always loved that song and wanted to perform it. I laid the instrumental tracks for her to rehearse with. She liked it and went on the computer to make sure she had all of the lyrics correct. We were not really intending to record the song at that time. It was really just a fun thing. She looked over the lyrics for a few minutes and saidHey, I want to lay some vocal tracks over what youve done. She proceeded to lay the lead and the harmony tracks in one take each top to bottom. Wow! As we were listening back to the performance Darrick Long (an ASU student) walked into my office and said I really like that and I have an idea. Darrick takes his iPhone out of his pocket and sayslets make a video! The footage on the iPhone was shot right then. As we listened to the lyrics of this great Charles Fox Norman Gimbel composition, Darrick (along with his twin brother Eric) had a concept to convey a unique message through the video. The world recently commemorated the 60th Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March and State Senator Quinton Ross played the video for visiting dignitaries during their visit to Montgomery. The video was met with a rousing ovation of approval and we are all very proud to have been a part of it. Weve received many positive emails and texts from around the world from those who have viewed the video on YouTube! Christina (a gifted vocalist) and Darrick (who also designed my website) are truly talented individuals and I love working with them. Thank you, TRL!

  • What is the fact of the matter?

Is it what we have been told or what is widely believed?

Is it the opinion of those we see as informed or is the truth, truly undiscovered?

Every day we are bombarded with barricades of information from the internet, scientific observations, colleagues, family members and even from our own minds.

We have been trained to blindly believe what we see and hear from the masses.

Society views have become considered fact when most often they are the trigger point where lies, myths and misunderstandings are shot from.

In the aftermath of all this information and truth, we are walking around shell shocked and in disbelief when we see the fabric of our own communities, neighborhoods and families blown to pieces.

Think about it, the truth needs no defending. It doesnt need a campaign or a banner that says look at me or listen to me.

Why is it that everywhere we look, we are blasted with signs, advertisements, campaigns, speeches, and propaganda?

Could it be that all of this freely given information is only smoke from the gun meant to cloud the truth?

How many times have you spent money on something that was supposed to be the best new thing on the market only to find out it worked the exact same or worse than the old thing on the market?

Well dont feel bad, millions of people fell for the same smoking gun.

I know that seems small and insignificant, but what happens when that same concept is applied to something dangerous like hate.

We all remember the Trail of Tears, slavery, and the Holocaust. Lets look at more recent times, remember the murder last week, yesterday, today?

We have allowed societies views to dictate the best new things in our lives as wealth, power, and self; leaving behind the old things like wisdom, love, and true self-worth.

We have deemed morals and values as old fashioned and outdated. A consumer is an individual that buys a product or service for self -use. They call us consumers; this is one thing that is true. We are so consumed looking at what the media is telling us we dont have; we cant see the priceless gems we possess right in our own homes.

We buy societys ideas of what we should be, how we should act, what we should wear, what we should think.

Nothing is wrong with purchasing something that has real value, but I urge you to recognize what you are buying, assess the actual value of it, and please evaluate the true price you are paying for it.

A wise person once told me to trust no ones information but your own. Analyze what you see and hear, look past the smoke and see the gun in came from.

  • Album Reviews Codename Starkey Flythe- Next Won't Be So Easy by Patrick Ross Rating:

Miamis Codename Starkey Flythe is a mixture of underground meets rap meets art film montage. The music is sparse, dark, and very moody and a far cry from your typical rap music aimed at a commercial market seeking high rotation airplay as is evidence in the cut MTV. You are far more likely to hear this music in underground club

scenes and performance art venues. The music is definitely fringe style that appeals to a more artistically intellectual palette. But what really makes the music gel is when it is seen and heard in the context of the video footage that is carefully compile and edited to convey the artist true sentiments and visionary aspirations. There not much information about 24 year old Starkey Flythe, so you only have the message in the music to give you some clue as what is the actual meme being expounded. The cuts All Falls Down and Next Time It Wont be so Easy come across more like soundtracks for film in which the pictorial vignettes tell the story more so than the lyrics. Which come across like some sort of tribal chant and proclamation that the current world situation is a part of some type of pugilistic encounter in which therell be a future rematch. Lastly the two tracks Ready and the bonus track Instantly evoke a message of an anti-hero prepared to meet the challenges of a pre apocalyptic world on the verge. https://m.soundcloud.com/codename-starkey-flythe Twitter @cnstarkeyflythe
