On Saturday, January 7 , 43 members of Trinity boarded a bus headed the Minnesota Institute of Arts for a once in a lifetime opportunity, seeing the Martin Luther exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. The collection of rare artifacts from Luther’s time featured many of his own possessions, hand- written letters of Luther, many important reformation documents, and even the pulpit from which he preached his final sermon. As we proceeded through the exhibit, we learned a great deal of history and context about Luther’s life. Seeing all of the items on display really helped to bring Luther’s story to life. Dear Friends in Christ,

The physicist Robert Oppenheimer was once involved in raising money for a favorite cause of his – an international student ex-change program. Mr. Oppenheimer was convinced that getting people of different cultures together would make for peace. In a speech he remarked, “The best way to send an idea is to wrap it up in a person.”

Long before Robert Oppenheimer’s time, God, our heavenly Fa-ther did something along that line. But far greater than just an idea, God himself came into this world wrapped up in the flesh and blood of his beloved Son, Jesus, whose birth we’ve just cele-brated once again.

John (my favorite evangelist) put it so powerfully in the opening verses of his gospel (one of my favorite passages from that book). He wrote, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God …And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth … No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known. (John 1:1-2, 14, 18).

John made it clear that you and I have been sent far more than an idea from God. In and through and because of Jesus, God has made Himself known to us. Jesus came to reveal the good and gracious and loving heart of God to us and to this whole world!

If we were to read on in John’s Gospel – or, of course, any of the other three gospels – we’d see again that God’s greatest desire, His heart’s desire, is all about having us as his very own. John – Matthew, Mark and Luke, too – tell us there wasn’t one thing that would stop God from making that happen, most certainly not our sin. In fact, it was at the cross that Jesus most profoundly re-vealed God’s heart, his good and gracious and loving heart.

As children of God and followers of Jesus, you and I are given the amazing task of revealing God’s heart to family and friends and neighbors at Trinity and beyond these church walls. You and I are called and sent into this world as God’s love enfleshed. So, keep your eyes open to the opportunities … every day, ordi-nary ways … to reveal the heart of God by loving and serving others. Keep your eyes open, too, to the ways God’s heart is being revealed to you through others, His good and gracious and loving heart!

See you at worship and around town …

    In Christ,

    Pastor Joy Ekstedt

    Have You Remembered Trinity Lutheran

In Your Estate Planning? When you make or revise your Will or Trust, or review your life insurance contracts or retirement funds, please consider naming Trinity Lutheran Church as one of your beneficiaries. The use of the following language ensures that your gift will be

    directed appropriately:

    “I bequeath _____ % of my estate (or $______ / amount) to

Trinity Lutheran Church, located at 511 South Fifth Street, Saint Peter,

    MN, 56082, designated for the

    Trinity Lutheran Church Endowment Fund.”

All gifts of $5,000 or greater will be distributed ac-cording to the provisions of Trinity’s Major Gifts Policy (copies available at the Church Office), un-less the donor otherwise restricts his/her gift. For further information, speak with Pastor Joy Ekstedt or Jennifer Hubrig in the office.

    Newsletter SERVICE LISTS

All Trinity members share in food preparation and serving du-ties for funerals and other church events throughout the year. The membership has been divided into 13 groups with desig-nated coordinators for each month. This allows one group to

have a month off each year. Groups move up one month each year as well, so that you are not serving in the same month

each year. When your assistance is needed, a coordinator will contact you. Food coordinators are responsible to call and line-

up the coffee fellowship hosts for each Sunday in their month and submit the list to the office by the 15th of the month for pub-

    lication in the Trinity Times.
