Tribute to Arthur Henry Wuehrmann, DMD

Dr. Arthur H.Wuehrmann, 91, the first Radiology Editorfor this Journal, died peacefully at home in Chapel Hill,North Carolina in September 7th, 2005 after celebrating66 years of marriage with his beloved wife, JaneWinslow Wuehrmann. He was born January 20, 1914in Bayonne, NJ, the son of Henry Deidrich and AnnaFriedhoff Wuehrmann. He graduated cum laude fromTufts University Dental School in 1937. He served inthe Dental Corps, US Naval Reserve from 1944-50.
He practiced Dentistry in Arlington and Boston,MA and taught part time in Tufts Dental School until1951. At that time he was invited to join the facultyof the new University of Alabama Dental School inBirmingham. He served as Associate Dean for six yearsand Acting Dean of the Dental School in 1960-61.
During his tenure as Professor of Dentistry, Dr.Wuehrmann wrote ‘‘Dental Radiology’’ which wasused extensively by dental and dental hygiene schoolsfor more than 20 years. His service to the Professionincluded membership of the first National AdvisoryCommittee on Radiation to the United States PublicHealth Service, and of both the National Institute for
Dental Research Training Grant Committee and theNational Center for Radiological Health Training GrantCommittee. Dr. Wuehrmann held Life Membership inthe Alabama and American Dental Associations, aswell as membership in OKU Honorary Dental Frater-nity. However, his Distinguished Life Membership inthe American Academy of Oral and MaxillofacialRadiology (an organization to which he had devotedconsiderable time and effort) was considered by himto be his single greatest professional achievement. AsPast President of this Academy, he represented its con-cerns at various times on other national committeesand organizations. A prize in his name has been issuedannually since 1995 by the American Academy ofOral and Maxillofacial Radiology for the best paperpublished in the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology sec-tion of ‘‘Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology,Oral Radiology and Endodontology.’’
