résumé

The structure stripped to its simplest elements consists of three planes: a ground plane, deck plane, and roof plane. The deck is positioned at the height at which the grasses stop grow-ing and tree trunks become visible. The structure mimics this situation with its di-agonal beams and columns rising up from the deck plane. The tree trunks rise to the underside of the canopy de-fined by leaves and branches, another plane in the forest. This plane is imitated with the two elements that collectively

comprise the roof plane. The pieces creating the roof are different sizes and set at different angles, but they feel strongly connected by the diagonal beams which pierce them. The cut out portions from each appear to allow the two roof portions to piece togeth-er. Comparing the structure’s planes to those within the forest suggests a planar hierarchy within the structure, rating the surrounding environment. The structure is in fact an evaluation of its surrounding environment: the forest.

My design is based on viewing the ac-tivities of the Lawrence Arts Center as different branches with different func-tions and purposes, but still viewed collectively as a place of learning, creating, and displaying a variety of arts. So, as to reflect the uniqueness

of these different programmatic branches, they are each placed on their own isolated terraces which are all tied together through the vertical circulation which in turn takes the form of a tree branching out and bringing the people to the various program.

kunsthal : a matter of light [downtown copenhagen - fall 2010]

In one of the most urban areas in Copenhagen, the Glyptoteket and Petersen Tegl brick want to build a Kunsthal for contemporary art. They need to be able to host various ex-hibitions in a unique and exemplary

setting while having no permanent collections. The client wants the build-ing to be constructed using their brick as the predominant material, showing the beauty of the material on the exterior as well as the interior.

New Orleans Center for Film Study [studio 609 - spring 2011]

The historic Warehouse District was an industrial area that is now experience-ing urban renewal. Old warehouses are becoming lofts, apartments, hotels, museums, and gallery spaces. Restau-rants are slowly spreading across the district as well.

Museums are in yellow, most of the galleries are represented in orange blocks, and the dots restaurants. The Artwalk takes place along the red line.

The surrounding green space creates buffer zones to the south. Beaten foot-paths can be seen along this green strip suggesting strong pedestrian use.

[project statement]

The New Orleans Center for Film Stud-ies is a nonprofit organization support-ing independent documentary and film artists. The Center aims to main-tain the New Orleans experience of getting into more than you are out to do, spontaneity through the passive experience. The walk by offers visual connection through cafe and gallery spaces among a functioning film cen-ter, bringing in more ensuring a lively atmosphere. The sociality and culture cultivated within the Center supports not only its active warehouse district location, but artists, students, and faculty both as a center for research and education. The Center's film col-lection, screening spaces, and media

classrooms support individual and classroom sized education. The Center offers several interior and exterior loca-tions for its users to meet, learn from one another, and offers the space to collaborate. Meeting the general public can happen in many of these spaces. The environment created by the institute and its influencing of artists to work with one another, or just inspire one another shows the social vitality such a place could create as well as the economic vitality that comes as a result of the industry.The diagram above shows spontaneous zone loca-tions. Blue represents exterior spaces while yellow represents interior sponta-neous zones.

The design process is shown through massing models. The models respond to programatic relations, stronger connections to the site, its adjacen-cies, and scale. Throughout most of schematic the project existed only in physical models and drawings. Many ideas were introduced to various program, mainly in the spontaneous zones, but most did not make it into the final design. The schematic draw-ings on this spread show a couple of different thoughts on approach to handling the building’s corner as well.

mixed use site development [ku+el dorado studio - fall 2011]

In the el dorado + KU studio three 3-week iterations for the same site were developed after site research, and video threads were created from interview videos and context in-fluences. The site is a convergence point of Kansas City’s downtown, the Crossroads Arts District, and the histor-ic Westside neighborhood. The three distinct areas have completely dif-ferent densities and scales, but share one commonality: the cultural divide imposed upon them by the interstate system implemented through the city in the 1960s, effectively cutting these communities off from one another.

The Crossroads is a low density, low rise area between downtown and Crown Center. The vibrant arts district is the city’s art hearth and has over 60 galler-ies. Recent urban renewal can be seen in adaptive reuse of the existing build-ing fabric to house galleries, design firms, restaurants, and boutique shop-ping, and from the district’s successful First Fridays monthly gallery openings. The site presents the opportunity to reconnect these parts of Kansas City. There is a goal of increasing density for the area through the iterations while properly addressing the various scales.

[iteration I] urban collage

Iteration one looks to artist Mark Brad-ford’s collages and comes to use the recognizable building blocks that comprise the Crossroads to increase density on the site in a familiar scale. The design compiles similar scaled masses to those found throughout the Crossroads. As illustrated, the mass-es grow upon one another, highest near the larger scale of downtown.

Iteration two looks to Alvar Aalto and his attention to outdoor communal spaces, civic denotation, and vari-ous lighting strategies. The subtractive design process was starts by terracing massing down the sloping site then cut-ting out a courtyard and paths on the strongest pedestrian axis. Light is then pulled down into five communal spac-es for the various types of program and user groups. Light reflects into south

and east facing sawtooth lighting applications into spaces that would otherwise not naturally be lit well. The largest portion of program is the resi-dential, it has two communal spaces, while the hotel, office, and general public each have one civic space.

[iteration III] urban archive

Iteration three looks to artist Rachel Whiteread who’s work usually involves the cast of something, sometimes small architecutral elements, and of-ten larger urban elements, her work is displayed aside. Iteration three was developed in two schemes, one in which everything currently on the site would remain, and the other a clean slate site scheme. The clean scheme is displayed here and starts by taking two bars over the existing blocks with a break between acknowledging the existing alley / built condition. The bars then drop down and cast the existing site. The casts are then terraced with the site and the existing is cleaned out of the mold turning these voids into var-ious program or public zones. The next step carves a more dynamic space through the alley, it becomes an arts alley, hosting spaces for artist studios, galleries, and a workshop. Everywhere else on the ground level is filled with re-tail, restaurants, grocery, and a hotel.

In a continual attempt to increase density, living is built over most pro-gram and additional office and resi-dential mass are added above what appears as the cast and are screened.
