Introduction
Welcome to Trend Anthology’s 2011 Interior trend forecasting book. As interiors don’t change as quickly as Fashion, mainly because we can’t afford to, this book covers 4 trends across all the seasons of 2011. These 4 trends are: Eco Geek, Clean Cut Lines, Optimism and Understated Luxury. The magazines let you know the current trends; however we’re one step ahead, predicting next year’s trends. So that when the year comes round, your home will already be on trend. In this book you will find colour palettes, prints, products and designs relevant to each trend. We hope you will find a trend that suits your personal taste. remember, these trends are guidelines, not rules, so be creative and put your own twist on it!

OptimismDuring a recession, one would think that design would be influenced by the doom and gloom that consumers are
surrounded by. However, it influences design in an opposite way. Instead of colours being dull and prints being plain, they become bright and bold. Without realising it, consumers are buying into what is known as Optimistic Design. It is ways
of making consumers feel more positive in a negative societal situation.
The concept of Optimism stems from the idea of ‘Escapism’,
children’s books and films, e.g. Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland etc. It is a breath of fresh air for consumers to have something that’s a bit different to their
daily lives, something that brightens their day, like the colours yellow, green, blue
and pink.
Retailers realised during that instead of focusing on the negatives in life, their products and advertising
campaigns needed to highlight the positives.
In 2008, Barclay’s created an advert which one can’t help but smile at when watching it. The advert is simply a man who travels home from
work on a waterslide, which weaves its way through the city. There is no dialogue throughout the advert until the end where the voiceover simply says ‘Contactless
technology from Barclay card, making payments simpler.’ Instead of talking about the Typical APR of theircards,
or the Interest they charge, the advert is about enjoying life with Barclay’s.

Understated Luxury
Old is the, well, new! The concept of salvaging products that are decades old or making products look decades old: Understated Luxury is the new
trend.
The sofa which looks like children have played on it every day for a year may have cost you one months’ pay packet, however someone who sits on it will think you got it from Camden Market for
£50. Consumers aren’t shouting about their products any more as it is part of their home, not a showroom. Luxury now tends to be shown in the car that you drive or the mobile phone you
own as opposed to your home.
Consumers have gained personality again and are buying what they like as opposed to what they are being told to buy by the adverts on the TV
or in the magazines.
Materials like concrete are making a comeback, as long as it looks like it’s not been treated. Patterned tiles on floors that you’d see at The
Black Country Museum are becoming popular within the home again. Reclaimed and salvaged
items like doors and cast iron radiators are in high demand. Even the smaller items of
interiors like storage, people are using old suitcases they find in Vintage or Charity shops.
Even crockery looks like it’s come from different centuries!
Vintage, retro, and back to basics themes are all showing through in this trend of creating an
illusion of Understated Luxury.

Eco GeekConsumers are becoming more aware of their carbon footprint, the waste
they create and the products they buy. Since the price of fuel rocketed around 2007, the price of consumer products has also increased, pushing
consumers into finding other ways of producing goods, food in particular.
The term Vertical Farming refers to an agricultural technique involving large scale agriculture in urban areas. The idea is that using recycled
resources and greenhouse methods, these high rise buildings will produce fresh vegetables and fruit all year round. Despite the fact that it is a
concept which is going to be implemented in about 5-10 years time, a lot of design for the home is being based around the idea.
Growing your own vegetables and fruit used to be a thing of the past and considered
to only happen in the countryside; however it has made A resurgence not only in the
countryside but also the cities. Vegetable patches on roofs and in window boxes, bee
hives on the top of city blocks. The creation of bread makers means that
consumers can now make their own bread without having to take too much time out of their schedule. Making your own fruit
and vegetables and home cooking is making a return to modern day culture as
consumers have realised it is in fact a lot more convenient than it used to be,
and a lot cheaper than supermarket food.
In regards to products within the home, ecological design has become a lot more popular because aesthetics have improved greatly. Products don’t look like they’ve been recycled or remodelled from junk. Even
eco-friendly doll houses are being created so as to keep up to date with modern society and to teach children how important eco design is.
Raw Materials such as timber are becoming an even more popular material to use in the home and interior products. Despite wooden floors being more expensive than laminate, the aesthetics of real wood outweigh
the cost. Now that the majority of furniture companies work in conjunction with the Forest Stewardship Council, timber is becoming a
more eco friendly and sustainable source.
The eco geek is no longer the one put on the backbench; they are the ones who are the driving force behind the future of design.

From wooden houses, to brick, and now back to wood, architecture has also come full circle in regards to the materials used. The design hasn’t
though, it has moved forward at a great pace.
The Arts and Crafts movement brought about aesthetics and functionality
together, Memphis created the aesthetics over functionality trend.
However, the current trend is beauty, but within the eye of the beholder, AND functionality. Many structures at the
moment are just as they are described: very structured.
There are clean cut lines, vast amounts of one material, whether that is wood, glass, or concrete, and no
clutter. Architects have realised that consumers have enough clutter in their life as it is, so why clutter their home as well:
this includes the interior as well as the exterior.
This trend has been inspired by the futuristic trend which has circulated most Fashion Catwalks for years now. It usually looks fairly plain, but extremely impressive: theatrical minimalism is
the key phrase with this trend.
