Treatment Sheet for ‘Flashlight’

ConceptThe purpose of my video is to show that behind every action there is a reason. Often in society we are quick to make judgement without knowing the full story. This will be emphasised throughout the music video by showing two peoples lives and how they effect each other. With the gradual build in pace of the song at the beginning it will show the actors lives, and how they intertwine. When the song becomes of a faster pace it will show a montage of how they have progressed with each other. The song is upbeat but the camera angles, editing and settings will change the atmosphere to suit the concept.

Narrative and performanceThe narrative and performance will be directly linked by showing the actors singing throughout, when they are in the narrative scenes. At the beginning of the video there will be a sunset or sunrise with the victim sat in front of it. Once this has been established it will cut to the martial arts class and show a conflict between two actors. This will then progress to each scene showing the constant fights they have in class and the intensity of them learning theses moves. There is a twist to the story as the audience realises the reason behind the bully learning to defend there selves. Being put into the bullies home life shows why he fights with others, and why that person needs to defend them selves. Amplifying the bullying within the video will allow the audience

to symphonise with them. Fear can be shown along with the need to control, this will be shown by the parent following the child and checking everything they do in case they talk to anyone about what they have done. Bullying has been taken to the next level within their house so they run away in panic, only to find themselves at the same place as the victim in the end. When the sunset or sunrise is shown it represents a new beginning, and a change.

JudgmentThe video will need to focus on judgment to be able to show the audience how quickly they can put a label on someone. This will then be torn down with each new bit of information. The audience will receive shots such as, from the home life, abusive parents, and then fighting. By using low angles and dark lighting this will show that the actor is insignificant and is not looked upon in the nicest light.

SaviourThere are many different saviours in the world but the main one is the actual person, they need to help themselves. The actor will show this by going to martial arts classes and learning self defence. In the end they will realise they cannot stay in the violent home, so they will pack up and struggle while trying to escape. Knowing the parent would not let them learn how to fight, they have to sneak out and go to the classes on their own. Taking their well being into their own hands.

LocationPossible locations could be Eskdale Academy Sports Centre, Seaton beach, and the inside of a house. The sports centre will be the main focus, because it is the place that is vital for the audience to see the actor learning to fight. Having the beach as a location will show solitude and peacefulness within the music video, to give a nice round off to the music video rather than leaving it on a bad note.

Camera and EditingAt the beginning of the video it will fade into a scene with the sunset, this will then link to the end of the video because It will fade out. The only change will be the newly added person within the frame. Doing fade out with leave an enigma because several questions are unanswered.The shots will need to be slowed down when it the parents are yelling and abusing their child. This emphasise how horrible the home life is for this child.Varied shots will be used when they are learning martial art, these shots will be from several angles.When the parent is stood on the outside of the window the camera will crash zoom into their eyes showing the fury and rage within them.
