PARK GÜELL (Barcelona, Spain)

1st - LISTENING 8

A little bit of history…

The Park Güell was formed with the joining of two a reas "Can Muntaner de Dalt" and "Can Coll i Pujol", in t he "Muntanya Pelada" (today muntanya del Carmel), purc hased by Count Güell the year 1899.

Gaudi conceived as a religious sense at the same ti me as organic and urban, and using the 60 meters of gap w hich has the mountain (the height ranges between 150 and 210 meters respect the sea) to project a path of spiritual ele vation, placing in its top a chapel, but it was never built , in place that currently holds the monument to Calvary (or Turóde les tres creus).

With Gaudi worked some of his more common colleague s, Josep Maria Jujol, Francesc Berenguer, Joan Rubió and Llor ençMatamala. The works were made by contractor Josep C asanovas i Pardo.

Nowadays…

The park covers an area of 17.18 hectares (0.1718 s quare kilometers). The design clearly demonstrates the architect's hand, and the peculiar style of Gaudi i s evident in any element.

There are corrugated ways, like rivers of lava, and walkways covered with columns that have forms of tr ees, stalactites and geometric shapes.

Many of the surfaces are covered with pieces of pot tery or glass as a mosaic of colors, which is called Trenca dís brittle).

Thanks to its location outside the movement of the city and a high altitude, this park is a haven of peace that contrasts with the noise and frenzy of the Catalan capital.

The staircase and the dragon…

This is the most famous part of the park, has become a symbol of Barcelona as the "Sagrada Familia", and other more modern constructions (Agbar Tower ...).

Above the main entrance is a grand staircase leading to the hipostyle room divided by a number of water sources. Here is the famous lizard, which is normally confused with a dragon.
