Venue:ITCampusKatrinebjerg,AarhusUniversityPeterBoeghAndersenAuditoriumIn1992,JohnEllisstatedthattelevisionwasan“essentiallynationalactivityforthevastmajority of its audience”. Since then,wehavewitnessed a development thatincreasinglyfollowsthelogicsoftransnationalism.Dramahasbecomeadriverofsalesand an increasingly important component in the digital, global television market(Steemers,2016).Althoughtelevisioncontentisstillproducedlocallywithinspecificcountriesunderspecificnationallawsandmediaregulations,andoftenfirstforalocalmarket, the principles operating behind production, distribution ownership oraudienceviewingpracticesarenotonlyboundororganizedbynationalbordersandregulations but follow transnational or even supra-national cross-ownershipstructuresandinterrelations.
This is reflected in termsor trademarks like“qualitydrama”,“subtitleddrama”,or“NordicNoir”thatareassociatedtotelevisionseriessuchasBorgen,BreakingBad,GrandHotelorDeutschland83(mainlynationalproductionswithaglobalaudience),SherlockorOutlander(internationalco-productions),TheTeam,TheNightManagerorBorgia(transnationalco-production).Thisisreflectedintheirreceptionwhen,forexample, television drama series are successfully adapted orwatched viamultipleplatforms by diverse global audiences. This is also reflected in multinationalproductionsgroups suchas theworldwideoperatingEndemol ShineGroup; in theendeavoursofchannelsandproductioncompaniestoproduceanddistributewithabiggeraudienceinmind;intheincreasingtendencytogatherfundingandexpertisefor European or international co-productions; in the new possibilities of accessing
global content via various platforms such as Netflix, Amazon or YouTube; in theincreasingpracticeofexchangingcreativeprofessionals;andinthechoiceofthemesandaestheticsthatappealtoaudiencesbeyondthecountryoforigin.
Transnationaltendencieshavebeen,andwillincreasinglycontinuetobe,anintegralpart of television – not only inWesternmarkets but also in other globalmarkets.Turkey,forexample,hasbecomeabigexporteroftelevisionlatelywithitstelevisionformatstravellingtotheArabicregionsandalsoworldwide.Likewise,KDrama,Koreantelevisiondrama,hasprovedhighlysuccessfulacrossandbeyondAsia,enteringtheMiddleEastandAmericanmarkets.Thescaleandscopeoftransnationalaspectsatalllevelsoftelevisionproductionandconsumptionbecomesevenmoresignificantinanageofglobalization,digitizationandmediaconvergence.
