    Namaste, Helping Hands Nepal!

Born on Mangsir 11, 2045 B.S., I am Keshav Khanal from Pragatinagar VDC5 of Nawalparasi district.

There are five membersfather, mother, brother, sister and mein our family. As a carpenter, my

father is the only source of income in the family; however, he could somehow manage the earning to

meet household expenses and to continue our studies. I was good at studies since my childhood andcompleted grade 5 from a nearby school, Namuna Kanya Secondary School. Then I did my +2 from

Siddhartha Higher Secondary School, Kawaswoti after passing the SLC exam from Bhimshen Adarsha

    Secondary School.

Similarly, I took the Diploma level exam at Jana Jyoti College in the village itself. After the exam, I came

to Kathmandu thinking to utilize the one year free time with some work that would be helpful to family

to some extent. I started to work for a businessman in Kathmandu and after a year, the result was out. I

was very much interested to gain a Master degree and decided to join the program on advice of family

members. So, I joined Shankar Dev Campus but without any work at hand, I could not manage to

arrange food and shelter. As the classes were not started smoothly and as Dashain and Tihar were

approaching near, I thought, instead of staying here futile, it would be better to return home and join

    hands in fathers work.

I started working with him at home but slowly and gradually, I began to lose interest in work as I felt

tiredness in my body. I used to get angry on seeing food while sitting to take meal and got tired while

walking as well. My face seemed to be bloodless and pale. During that time, talks of my sisters marriage

was on progress and Mangsir 6 was the date fixed for the marriage. Somehow we began to make

arrangements for the ceremony and in the course of time, I got weaker and weaker. My parents would

ask me to visit doctor for treatment but I would turn down their words saying that I was okay. One day,

as mother forced me to do so, we went to hospital. Doctor checked my pressure which happened to be

240/140 and he asked how I could reach there with such pressure. We went to the doctor again with the

reports of blood test, urine test, X-ray, and Video X-ray. On seeing the reports, he told us that both my

kidneys had failed and thus, advised to go to TUTH as soon as possible. We, mother and son, got a huge

    shock.

Number of thoughts came in my mind like weak economic condition, doctors advice to go to

Kathmandu, travel and medical expenses, nearing sisters marriage and more importantly, my

deteriorating health condition. I thought how hardworking my parents were and how they could

manage the expenses for everything including our studies. They must had been hoping for some help

and support from me thinking that their son would bring home the days of happiness after his college

days. Unfortunately, I was infected with such a dreadful disease. On knowing this, everybody cried and

was in pain. On reaching home, neighbors and relatives were there to show sympathy. Friends and

relatives at distance were also informed through phone.

The same night, I, along with father and maternal uncle, moved towards Kathmandu at about 12:30. The

next day, we went to TUTH for checkup and showed the reports of Bharatpur Hospital. The doctor asked

us to make all the tests and X-ray once again. After doing all the tests, the reports there showed that

both my kidneys were destroyed. I got some relief, however, as many patients like me were there.

Mangsir 6 was the day of my sisters marriage and after attending the ceremony, we came to

Kathmandu again on Mangsir 7. 11thday of the same month was my birthday and on the same day

began my dialysis. The process of dialysis continued over Poush and in the early days of Magh, I began

to have coughs. Then it was revealed after checkup that the lungs were filled with water and I started to

take antibiotic drug. Several tests were conducted to know the reason why and how the lungs were

filled with water. Finally, the reports showed T.B. and I started the medicine from Magh 29. Slowly and

gradually, I began to get recovered. The operation was postponed for 2 months since I was taking

medicine for T.B. In that duration, I suffered from the problem of getting faint for about 25/30 hours

time and again. Now CCU, then ICU, but no any disease was revealed after several tests like X-rayCT

scan too. Later on, it was known that the problem was caused by the overdose of drug and was solved

    after controlling it.

And then, we got the date of Baisakh 6 for operation and thus, got admitted on the 3rd

    . After the

    checkup on 5th

, the doctor cancelled the operation saying that it was not possible as the heart was filled

with water. Dialysis was restarted. Jestha 10 was another date fixed for the operation and gotadmittance again on 5th. The pressure was checked to be 280/150 in the evening and I was immediately

taken to CCU of Man Mohan Hospital on the note that it might affect heart. Pressure did not decrease

for 5/6 days despite taking different medicines. Then as per the doctors advice, ayurvedic medicine was

used and I got some relief. Again I shifted to TUTH. I almost gave up the hope of living because of regular

shift to CCU and ICU time and again. From the next day I shifted to TUTH, I suffered from some disease

in stomach. After several tests including X-ray, Video X-ray and CT-scan, it was known that stomach was

filled with blood and moreover, the range of hemoglobin had gone down to 5 from 11. According to the

doctor, my liver was also damaged. It was very difficult to breathe and stomach was also swollen. The

report of CT scan again showed that there was no problem with liver. To control the pain and problem

    of stomach, I started antibiotic.

Continuing with antibiotic, I stopped hearing from Ashar 17 and discontinued it from Ashar 19. I got

discharged on Ashar 29 and came back to the room. I had already lost the hope of living; however,

continued with the process of dialysis and other treatments. Nobody at home cared about anything else

because of me and they were around me every time. As the days were passing, problem with heart was

also seen and I got admitted at TUTH on Shrawan 13. My family consulted with doctor and was told that

the patient (me) would not live more than a month and the operation was under risk. After the

successful completion of operation, I got discharged on Bhadra 1. Everything was getting better but

again after nine days, stomach was aching. I felt it was okay after getting treatment at TUTH and taking

    medicine.

But again, in the evening, after the meal, I vomited and there was severe stomach pain. Then we went

for dialysis after making a call to doctor. I was still suffering after the operation and was worried more.

We got back at 11 pm after taking some medicines but the pain was not controlled for the whole night.

The next morning we went to hospital again. Nephrologist, after checking, called in gastroenterologist

for further check up. After X-ray and Video X-ray, they told that there was intestinal disorder, there

might be wounds in the intestines and kidney might get damaged. If that would be the condition, there

was very lesser chance of living, so they advised for operation. I thought I would not live if the

transplanted kidneys had also failed. On completion of operation at 3 am on Bhadra 12, I, after regaining

consciousness, knew that I was shifted to ICU and more importantly, the kidneys were safe. They

allowed me to eat only 100 ml of pulses juice in the beginning and I vomited and again same amount of

pulses and nothing happened. I got discharged and left hospital on Bhadra 27.

I came back to life after such difficult situations but it costs about 75/76 thousands for medicines per

month plus separate expenses for food and home rent. Meanwhile, it is necessary for daily checkups for

three months. I also think of taking loan to meet the expenses for treatment and medicines and of

returning the money after I will earn later, but none of my ears help me listen any more. Who would

give a work for a deaf person like me? I went to hospital for treatment and there were many poor

patients like me who had come to cure themselves but would return after knowing the huge cost

including that of dialysis and killing their hopes of treatment. I am alive today because of the help and

support of my dear friends and relatives otherwise; my condition was also the same. I used to think that

after recovery, I would do some work on completion of the study. And I would save the money

remaining after my medical expenses and would help poor patients like me. It was my hope;unfortunately, I can hear no moremy ears are not with me, I am deaf. Now I wish to move ahead

joining hands of people and organizations like yours who support poor and impaired patients.
